Chapter 6: The Man Who Came Back

The hospital room number was burned into my memory.

Room 312.

The place where I first held Maya.

The place where Emily cried while laughing.

The place where I promised a tiny baby girl that I would protect her forever.

Now that same room number sat on a piece of paper connected to a secret I never wanted.

I called Daniel.

I don’t know why.

Maybe because I needed to hear him admit it.

Maybe because some part of me hoped Vanessa was lying.

The phone rang four times.

Then a man answered.

“Marcus.””

Hearing my name from his mouth made my skin crawl.

“You know who I am.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

“Then you know why I’m calling.””

“I assume Vanessa told you.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why did you come back?””

Daniel sighed.

“Because Maya is my daughter.””

“No.””

“Marcus—”

“No. You don’t get to appear after eleven years and claim her.””

His voice became colder.

“I have legal rights.””

“You weren’t there.””

“I made mistakes.””

“You abandoned her.””

“I was young.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You were thirty-two.””

Silence.

That silence told me everything.

He knew.

He knew exactly what he had done.

“You want money,” I said.

“No.””

“You want control.””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“I want my daughter.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Maya’s bedroom door was closed.

“She has a father.””

“You’re not her biological father.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Even though I knew they were coming.

“Careful,” I said.

“Marcus, you need to accept reality.””

“No.””

“You can’t change DNA.””

“I’m not trying to.””

“Then what are you trying to do?””

I looked at the photo on the wall.

Maya at age six, missing her front tooth.

Maya at age eight, holding a science trophy.

Maya at age ten, laughing at the beach.

“I’m trying to protect my daughter.””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he said:

“You should ask Vanessa what happened the night Emily died.””

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

Because that was the one thing Daniel knew would break me.

Emily’s death.

A car accident.

A rainy road.

A phone call at midnight.

The worst night of my life.

But now Daniel had connected it to Vanessa.

That night, I searched through every old message, every photograph, every memory.

And then I found something.

A picture I had never noticed before.

It was taken two weeks before Emily’s accident.

Emily was sitting at a coffee shop.

Across from her was Vanessa.

I stared at the image.

Because Vanessa had told me they barely knew each other.

A coincidence.

That was what she called it.

But the picture proved otherwise.

They knew each other.

They had been meeting.

The next morning, I drove to Vanessa’s sister’s house.

She opened the door and immediately looked uncomfortable.

“Marcus?””

“I need answers.””

Her face changed.

“What happened?””

“Your sister knew Emily.””

She went silent.

That was enough.

“You knew too.””

She looked away.

“Please leave.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I spent eleven years trusting your family.””

She closed her eyes.

“Marcus…”

“What happened?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Vanessa and Emily were friends.””

The world tilted.

“Friends?””

“Before you met Vanessa.””

“How?””

Her sister hesitated.

“They worked together.””

I stepped back.

All those years.

All those conversations.

Vanessa had known exactly who Emily was.

She had known exactly how important Maya was.

She hadn’t entered my life by accident.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Her sister didn’t answer.

“Why?””

“She was afraid you would hate her.””

“That’s not a reason.””

“No.””

Her sister looked at me.

“It’s not.””

The honesty hurt.

“What was she hiding?””

She swallowed.

“Before Emily died, she asked Vanessa for help.””

“With what?””

“I don’t know.””

“You do.””

She looked down.

“I know Emily was planning to expose something.””

“What?””

Her voice dropped.

“She found out Daniel wasn’t the only person who had lied.””

I felt the same cold feeling from before.

The same feeling I had when I read Maya’s note.

A secret inside a secret.

“What did Emily find out?””

Her sister looked at me.

And then she said:

“She found out Vanessa had been trying to get custody of Maya before Emily ever died.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“That’s impossible.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Emily would have told me.””

Her sister’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She tried.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She left you something.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Where?””

Her sister hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Vanessa took it.””

I stared at her.

“What did she take?””

She looked toward the street.

“The letter Emily wrote you before the accident.””

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

I opened it.

And the words on the screen made me forget how to breathe.

*I found Emily’s missing letter. If you want the truth about your daughter, meet me alone.*

Underneath the message was a name.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

May you like

Someone I thought had been gone forever.

*Emily.*
