Chapter 7: The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead

The first thing I heard in the darkness was Brielle screaming.
The second was the sound of a gun hitting the floor.
Then someone shouted, "Nobody move!""
I lunged toward the voice.
"Brielle!""
"Michael!""
Her fingers found my jacket.
I pulled her behind me just as emergency lights flickered on along the corridor.
Three men in tactical uniforms rushed through the doorway.
"Police! Everyone on the ground!""
Richard Cole raised both hands.
Daniel took one step backward.
Vanessa stood frozen beside the metal table, her tablet still clutched against her chest.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Richard pointed at me.
"He's the one you want! He's carrying stolen company property!""
One of the officers approached.
"Sir, put your hands where I can see them.""
I raised my hands.
"The original evidence is on a separate drive. My attorney has the records.""
Margaret appeared behind the officers.
"That's correct. And I'd strongly recommend that everyone in this room stop making statements until counsel is present.""
Richard's face tightened.
"Who authorized this operation?""
Margaret held up a document.
"The emergency preservation order. We also have evidence of intellectual property fraud, attempted coercion, and unlawful confinement.""
Richard laughed.
"You're making a serious mistake.""
An officer stepped toward him.
"Turn around.""
Richard didn't move.
Instead, he looked at Daniel.
"Tell them what we discussed.""
Daniel stared at the floor.
"Richard...""
"Tell them!""
Daniel swallowed.
"I don't know what he's talking about.""
Richard's expression changed.
"You ungrateful little coward.""
Daniel suddenly looked up.
"You told me the original files had been destroyed!""
Richard stepped toward him.
"You were paid to make sure they were destroyed.""
"And you promised me the company!""
The room fell silent.
I watched the two men turn on each other.
For fifteen years, Daniel had been my closest friend.
Now he was arguing with another man about which of them deserved the money stolen from my daughter's invention.
An officer separated them.
"Both of you. Against the wall.""
I turned toward Brielle.
Her wrists were still tied.
I carefully untied them.
She rubbed her skin.
"Are you hurt?""
She shook her head.
Then she began crying.
"I'm sorry.""
I looked at her.
"Not now.""
"But I—"
"You're safe. That's what matters right now.""
She buried her face against my shoulder.
Vanessa watched us.
Her expression was impossible to read.
When I finally released Brielle, she looked at her mother.
"Mom, why did you let them do this?""
Vanessa took a step forward.
"Sweetheart, I was trying to protect you.""
Brielle shook her head.
"No. You were trying to protect yourself.""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Richard was being escorted toward the corridor when he suddenly stopped.
He looked directly at Brielle.
"Ask your mother what happened to Rachel.""
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"Don't listen to him.""
Richard smiled.
"Your mother knows exactly why Rachel disappeared.""
An officer pushed him forward.
But the damage was done.
Brielle turned toward Vanessa.
"What happened to my real mother?""
Vanessa stared at the floor.
"She abandoned you.""
"That's not what he said.""
"He's lying.""
"Then why are you scared?""
Vanessa said nothing.
I stepped between them.
"Brielle, let's get you out of here.""
She nodded.
But as we walked toward the corridor, she stopped beside Daniel.
He was sitting against the wall with an officer standing over him.
"Why didn't you tell me?"" she whispered.
Daniel looked up.
For a moment, his face softened.
"Brielle...""
"Don't.""
He swallowed.
"I wanted to.""
"When?""
He couldn't answer.
"When I was little? When I called Michael Dad? When you watched me destroy Maya's invention?""
Daniel looked away.
Brielle wiped her cheeks.
"You knew I was your daughter, and you let me grow up thinking nobody wanted me.""
Daniel lowered his head.
The officer led us away.
I didn't look back.
At 8:40 a.m., Margaret received confirmation that the evidence from the warehouse had been secured.
The officers had recovered the forged ownership documents, the fake guardianship agreement, and several electronic devices.
They had also discovered a locked storage room containing original Helios development materials.
But the most important discovery came from a small safe hidden beneath the laboratory's control station.
Inside was an old leather folder.
Its contents included the original patent applications, financial transfers, and correspondence between Richard Cole and Daniel.
There was also a photograph.
Elena Cross stood beside a prototype.
Beside her was Rachel Morgan.
And behind them, smiling at the camera, was a younger Richard Cole.
On the back, someone had written:
*THE THREE PEOPLE WHO BUILT HELIOS.*
Margaret examined the photograph.
"This changes everything.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because it establishes that Richard was involved before Daniel took control of the project. It also shows that Rachel wasn't simply an administrative assistant, as the later agreements claimed.""
She opened the folder.
"She contributed to the original design.""
I studied the documents.
Elena had designed the power system.
Rachel had developed the authentication architecture.
Daniel had handled the commercial arrangements.
Richard had provided financing through Northstar.
But the ownership documents had been rewritten to remove Elena and Rachel.
And now they were trying to do the same thing to Maya.
"Where is Rachel?"" I asked.
Margaret looked at her phone.
"We're still locating her.""
I glanced toward Brielle.
She sat on a bench outside the interview room, holding a paper cup of water.
She hadn't spoken much since leaving the laboratory.
I approached.
"How are you feeling?""
She looked up.
"Like I don't know anything about my own life.""
I sat beside her.
"That's understandable.""
"Did you know Daniel was my father?""
"No.""
"Would you have treated me differently if you had?""
I considered the question.
"No.""
She looked surprised.
"Why?""
"Because you were a child. Whatever your parents did, you weren't responsible for it.""
Her eyes filled.
"Then why did you stop calling me your daughter?""
I looked down at my hands.
"Because you told me I wasn't your father.""
She swallowed.
"I was angry.""
"I know.""
"I thought if I helped Mom, Daniel would finally want me.""
I turned toward her.
"Did he?""
She shook her head.
"He only wanted the ownership key.""
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Brielle whispered:
"Do you think Maya will ever forgive me?""
I looked toward the hallway.
Maya was sitting with Margaret's assistant, drawing in a notebook.
"I don't know.""
Brielle nodded.
"I deserve that.""
I didn't disagree.
At 10:15 a.m., my phone rang.
An unfamiliar number.
I answered.
"Michael Bennett?""
"Yes.""
"This is Rachel Morgan.""
I stood immediately.
"Where are you?""
"I'm at the hospital.""
"Are you safe?""
"For now.""
I looked toward Margaret.
"Can I come see you?""
There was a pause.
"Bring Brielle.""
I turned.
Brielle was watching me.
"Your mother wants to see you.""
Her cup slipped slightly in her hands.
"My mother?""
I nodded.
"Rachel.""
Brielle began crying.
"She's alive?""
"Yes.""
She stood so quickly that the bench scraped against the floor.
"Where is she?""
The hospital room was quiet.
A woman sat beside the window, wrapped in a pale blue blanket.
Her hair had turned gray at the temples.
Her face was thinner than in the photographs.
But her eyes were unmistakable.
Brielle stopped at the doorway.
Rachel looked up.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Rachel whispered:
"Brielle?""
Brielle covered her mouth.
"Mom?""
Rachel began crying.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
Brielle ran across the room.
They embraced.
I stood near the doorway, watching a mother hold the daughter she'd been forced to leave behind.
It was a moment I couldn't have imagined the night before.
Rachel kissed Brielle's forehead.
"I am so sorry.""
Brielle shook her head.
"Why didn't you come back?""
Rachel closed her eyes.
"Because Daniel and Richard made me believe they would hurt you if I did.""
"Mom said you abandoned me.""
"I know.""
"She said you didn't want me.""
Rachel pulled back and held her daughter's face.
"That was never true.""
Brielle cried harder.
"I believed her.""
"I know, baby.""
Rachel looked toward me.
"Thank you for bringing her.""
I nodded.
Then I stepped outside to give them privacy.
Margaret was waiting in the corridor.
She held a document.
"Michael, there's something else.""
"What now?""
She handed me a printed copy of a medical guardianship order.
It had been issued eight years earlier.
Rachel's signature appeared at the bottom.
But Margaret pointed to the date.
"Look carefully.""
The order had been signed three days after Rachel's alleged accident.
I frowned.
"How is that possible?""
"Because the hospital records show she was unconscious during that period.""
I read the document again.
The signature was supposed to authorize Vanessa Bennett to manage Rachel's financial and legal affairs.
But the signature had been forged.
And the witness was Daniel Reed.
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Vanessa had no legal authority over Rachel?""
"None.""
"Then how did she control her?""
Margaret lowered her voice.
"Someone falsified the medical records and submitted a false declaration of incapacity.""
I looked through the hospital room window.
Rachel was holding Brielle's hand.
"Can we prove it?""
"We have the original hospital records. The facility has also agreed to preserve its archived files.""
I nodded.
"Then do it.""
Margaret hesitated.
"There's another problem.""
I closed my eyes.
"Of course there is.""
She opened a second document.
It was a bank statement from a private trust.
The account had received regular payments from Northstar for eight years.
The beneficiary was listed as:
*BRIELLE MORGAN.*
The current balance was $4.8 million.
I stared at the figure.
"Four point eight million?""
Margaret nodded.
"Apparently, the money was placed in trust under Brielle's name. But the controlling trustee was Richard Cole.""
"Why?""
"Because the trust was designed to conceal payments related to the original Helios theft.""
I looked at the document.
"Can Brielle access it?""
"Not without challenging the trust structure.""
I folded the paper.
"Then we challenge it.""
Margaret looked toward Rachel's room.
"There's one more thing. Rachel told the investigator that she had information about the original ownership key.""
I looked up.
"She knows where it is?""
"She says the key isn't a physical object anymore.""
I felt a chill.
"Then what is it?""
Margaret shook her head.
"She wants to explain it herself.""
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.
A new email.
The sender was Daniel Reed.
The subject line:
*YOU STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT MAYA BUILT.*
I opened it.
There was one attachment.
A photograph of a circuit board.
The same board Maya had repaired.
But beneath it was a handwritten note.
*The ownership key is only half the system. The other half is inside your company.*
I read the sentence again.
Then another line appeared beneath it.
*And someone on your board has been helping us since the beginning.*
I looked at Margaret.
The conspiracy wasn't over.
May you like
It was spreading.
And the next betrayal might come from the people I had worked beside for fifteen years.
