Chapter 4: The Father Behind the Photograph

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Elena stood beside the kitchen table, holding the photograph between two fingers. The woman in the picture was young, perhaps twenty-five. She had dark hair, tired eyes, and a newborn wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.
Daniel stood beside her.
He wasn't smiling.
He looked frightened.
I turned the photograph over again.
*The child Daniel said never existed.*
"Who is the woman?"" I asked.
Elena lowered herself into a chair.
"Her name was Rachel Morgan. Daniel dated her before we got engaged.""
"And the baby?""
"Brielle.""
The room seemed to shrink around me.
I stared at Elena.
"That's impossible. Vanessa told me Brielle's biological father abandoned them before she was born.""
"Vanessa told you that?""
"Yes.""
Elena nodded slowly.
"That's not what happened.""
She opened the envelope and removed a second photograph. This one showed Daniel holding the same baby outside a hospital.
On the back was a handwritten date.
Seventeen years earlier.
"Daniel was there when Brielle was born," Elena said.
"He paid for Rachel's hospital expenses. He even helped arrange their apartment.""
"Then why did Vanessa say he wasn't involved?""
"Because Daniel wanted his relationship with Rachel hidden. He was already working on the original Helios project, and he believed having a child would complicate his business arrangements.""
I stood up and walked toward the window.
"Why would he hide his own daughter?""
"Because Rachel discovered something.""
"What?""
Elena hesitated.
"She found out Daniel was selling pieces of our research to Northstar without my permission. She threatened to expose him.""
I turned around.
"What happened to her?""
"She disappeared.""
"Disappeared?""
"One day, she was there. The next, she wasn't. Daniel told me she'd moved overseas. Later, I heard she'd died.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"And Vanessa?""
Elena took a breath.
"Vanessa met Daniel through a private investment group. They were involved in the same financial arrangements long before you met her.""
I felt a wave of nausea.
"So my wife knew my business partner before we met?""
"Yes.""
"How long?""
"At least two years.""
I sat down heavily.
For three years, I'd believed Vanessa had entered my life by chance. We'd met at a charity event. She'd been charming, attentive, and surprisingly interested in my work.
She'd told me she was raising Brielle alone.
I'd admired her strength.
I'd wanted to give her and her daughter a stable home.
Now I was beginning to wonder whether I'd been selected rather than loved.
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered immediately.
"Where's Maya?""
"She's upstairs.""
"Put her on.""
"She's upset.""
"Put my daughter on the phone, Vanessa.""
I heard footsteps.
Then Maya's small voice.
"Dad?""
"Sweetheart, are you okay?""
"I'm okay.""
"Has anyone hurt you?""
"No.""
I heard Vanessa in the background.
"Tell him what you did.""
Maya went quiet.
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Maya, you don't have to tell anyone anything until I get home.""
"But Dad—"
The call abruptly ended.
I immediately dialed again.
This time, Vanessa answered.
"She's fine. Stop frightening her.""
"Don't touch her belongings.""
"Michael, you need to come home.""
"I'll be there in twenty minutes.""
"Come alone.""
I froze.
"What?""
"There's no reason to bring anyone else into our family business.""
I looked at Elena.
She was already shaking her head.
"Why?"" I asked.
"Because I have something you need to see.""
The call ended.
Elena stood.
"Don't go.""
"My daughter is there.""
"I understand, but Vanessa knows you've found the evidence.""
"I can't leave Maya alone with her.""
Elena walked to a cabinet and removed a small black envelope.
"Take this.""
Inside was a USB drive.
"What is it?""
"Copies of the original Helios correspondence. Daniel thought he'd destroyed everything, but I kept the emails and financial records.""
I slipped it into my jacket.
Elena held my arm.
"Michael, there's something I haven't told you.""
"What?""
"Rachel contacted me six months ago.""
My heart skipped.
"You said she disappeared.""
"She did. But she sent me a message through an anonymous account. She said Daniel was using Vanessa to gain access to your company.""
"Why didn't you tell the police?""
"I tried to arrange a meeting. She never showed.""
Elena looked down.
"She was afraid.""
I checked the time.
"Do you know where she is now?""
"No. But the message contained one detail.""
"What detail?""
"She said Brielle had inherited something from her father. Something Daniel had hidden inside a trust.""
I stared at her.
"What kind of trust?""
"An intellectual property trust.""
I thought about the $150,000 education trust listed in the agreement.
Then I understood.
The money wasn't simply intended for Brielle's education.
It was part of the payment arrangement.
I left Elena's house and drove home.
The entire journey, I kept seeing that photograph.
Daniel holding a newborn child.
Vanessa standing beside Richard Cole outside the Northstar laboratory.
My wife and my business partner had been connected long before either of them entered my life.
When I reached the house, the front door was unlocked.
I stepped inside.
The living room was quiet.
Too quiet.
"Vanessa?""
No answer.
Then I heard something upstairs.
A drawer slammed.
I ran up the stairs.
Maya's bedroom door was open.
My daughter sat on the floor beside her bed, hugging her knees. Her backpack lay upside down. Clothes, notebooks, and school supplies were scattered across the carpet.
Vanessa stood beside the desk.
Brielle was holding Maya's laptop.
"What happened?"" I demanded.
Vanessa turned.
"You're home.""
I looked at Maya.
"Come here, sweetheart.""
She ran into my arms.
"Dad, they took my notebook.""
I kissed the top of her head.
"You're okay.""
Brielle lifted the laptop.
"She was hiding things from us.""
I turned toward her.
"Give it back.""
"Mom said—"
"Now.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Don't shout at Brielle.""
"Then stop encouraging her to steal from a twelve-year-old.""
Brielle rolled her eyes.
"I didn't steal anything. I was looking for the project files.""
I held out my hand.
"Give me the laptop.""
She hesitated.
Then she tossed it onto the bed.
The screen cracked.
Maya gasped.
I stared at Brielle.
"Do you have any idea what you've done?""
She shrugged.
"It's just a computer.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Is this how you treat a child?""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"She's not innocent, Michael. She's been hiding company information.""
"She's twelve!""
"Old enough to understand that her invention has value.""
There it was.
The first honest thing Vanessa had said all morning.
I slowly straightened.
"You know about Helios.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"What?""
"Northstar. The licensing agreement. The $600,000 payment.""
Her face lost its color.
Brielle looked between us.
"Mom?""
Vanessa recovered quickly.
"You've been talking to someone who doesn't understand the situation.""
"I've seen the documents.""
"They're preliminary.""
"Your name is on them.""
"Because Daniel needed a legal representative.""
"You're not a legal representative. You're my wife.""
She laughed bitterly.
"Exactly. Your wife. I spent years supporting you while you built that company. I deserve something.""
I stared at her.
"Did you destroy Maya's invention to hide the evidence?""
Vanessa said nothing.
Brielle suddenly spoke.
"Mom told me the machine had to be burned before the inspection.""
Vanessa whipped around.
"Brielle!""
But it was too late.
I looked at Brielle.
"What inspection?""
She swallowed.
"The Northstar people were coming to check the prototype. Mom said if they found the original machine, they might discover who actually built it.""
Vanessa grabbed her daughter's wrist.
"Stop talking.""
Brielle pulled away.
"You said Dad wouldn't find out!""
The room went silent.
I felt Maya gripping my hand.
"Who told you that?"" I asked.
Brielle looked at her mother.
Then at me.
"Daniel.""
I took a slow breath.
"Did Daniel tell you to burn the machine?""
Brielle nodded.
"He said it would make everything easier.""
Vanessa slapped her palm against the desk.
"Enough!""
I moved Maya behind me.
"You're leaving this room.""
Vanessa stared at me.
"Excuse me?""
"You and Brielle are leaving Maya alone.""
"This is my house!""
"Our house.""
She stepped closer.
"You wouldn't have anything without me.""
I looked at her for a long moment.
"Maybe I wouldn't. But Maya wouldn't have lost eleven months of her childhood without you.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
Then she reached into her handbag.
She removed a folded document and threw it onto the bed.
"Read it.""
I unfolded the paper.
It was a legal agreement bearing my signature.
A property and asset authorization.
According to the document, I had granted Vanessa authority to transfer certain company-owned intellectual property into a separate holding company.
The signature looked exactly like mine.
But I had never signed it.
I looked up.
"What is this?""
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Your authorization.""
"It's forged.""
"Prove it.""
She picked up her handbag.
"Daniel already has the original.""
My phone vibrated.
An email had arrived.
The sender was Daniel Reed.
The subject line read:
*EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING — 8:00 A.M. TOMORROW.*
The message contained one attachment.
A formal notice.
I read the first paragraph.
The board was being asked to suspend me from all executive duties pending an investigation into alleged financial misconduct.
The accusation was signed by Daniel.
And the final paragraph stated that the company would proceed with the Northstar transfer in my absence.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching me carefully.
"You're going to lose everything, Michael.""
I folded the notice.
"No.""
She tilted her head.
"You don't have a vote anymore.""
I slipped the document into my jacket.
"Then I suppose tomorrow will be interesting.""
As I led Maya out of the room, Brielle suddenly called after us.
"Wait!""
I turned.
She looked frightened now.
"Mom didn't tell you the whole thing.""
Vanessa's face hardened.
"Brielle, don't.""
But Brielle was already crying.
"Daniel said the money wasn't for Mom.""
I stared at her.
"Then who was it for?""
She looked at the floor.
"Me.""
May you like
Then she whispered something that made the photograph in my pocket feel like a burning piece of metal.
"Because Daniel is my real father.""
