Chapter 6: The Girl in the Locked Room

The photograph of Brielle remained on my phone.

I zoomed in.

Her face was pale. Her eyes were red. A strip of tape covered part of her mouth.

Behind her was a metal wall with a faded yellow warning sign.

I recognized the logo.

Northstar Emergency Systems.

"Michael, don't do anything reckless," Margaret said.

I looked at her.

"She's seventeen.""

"I know.""

"She's my daughter.""

Margaret paused.

"Biologically, perhaps not. But that doesn't change what you've been to her.""

I looked away.

The distinction didn't matter.

Whatever Brielle had done to Maya, she was still a child being used by adults who understood exactly how to manipulate her.

I called the number that had sent the photograph.

It went straight to voicemail.

I tried again.

Nothing.

Then I received another message.

*6:00 A.M. Tomorrow. Main entrance. Bring the Sunflower prototype and the original ownership documents.*

I read it twice.

"Margaret, can we trace this?""

"Not from a standard text message without assistance.""

She reached for her laptop.

"I have someone who can help preserve the evidence and contact the appropriate authorities. But if we move too quickly, they may know.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

Upstairs, Maya was standing in the hallway.

She had heard everything.

"Dad, they're going to hurt Brielle.""

I walked toward her.

"We're going to get her back.""

"But how?""

I looked at the little silver connector in her hand.

"First, we find out what they're looking for.""

Maya hesitated.

Then she opened her laptop.

"I think I know.""

She showed me the recovered archive.

A new folder had appeared after the latest scan.

*HELlOS_KEY_01.*

Inside were three encrypted files.

Maya clicked the first.

A technical diagram appeared.

It showed a tiny authentication module embedded in the original Helios prototype.

"What is that?"" I asked.

"The ownership key," she replied.

I leaned closer.

"Explain it to me.""

Maya pointed at the diagram.

"Before I finished Sunflower, I found an old circuit design in the archived files. It was labeled Helios Authentication Module. I thought it was just a security feature.""

"And?""

"It's not.""

She opened another file.

"This thing contains a digital record of the original inventor's design. It identifies who created the first version and when.""

I looked at her.

"You're saying the machine can prove who invented Helios?""

She nodded.

"Not just that. It also contains the original patent registration data.""

Margaret moved closer.

"Can it establish that Elena created the original technology?""

Maya nodded again.

"Yes. But there's another part.""

She opened a third file.

A list of names appeared.

Elena Cross.

Rachel Morgan.

Daniel Reed.

Richard Cole.

Vanessa Bennett.

Then a final entry.

*BENNETT-REED TECHNOLOGIES — ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTION RECORD.*

I stared at the screen.

"Why is my company listed?""

Maya looked confused.

"I don't know.""

Margaret examined the data.

"Your company was founded after Elena's original work, correct?""

"Yes.""

"Then perhaps Daniel used your company's infrastructure to store or process the original files.""

I remembered something.

Eight years earlier, when Daniel and I were still working out of a small office, he'd asked to use our first server for a private development project.

He'd said it was temporary.

I'd given him access.

I had never asked what he stored there.

Margaret looked at me.

"Michael, do you still have the original server archives?""

"Not physically. They're stored in our company's old data center.""

"Can they be accessed?""

"Only through the administrator.""

She nodded.

"Then that's our next step.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

*You have six hours. Don't make this difficult.*

I looked at Maya.

"Can you make another Sunflower prototype?""

She shook her head.

"Not in six hours. Some parts took weeks to find.""

"Could you make a working copy of the ownership module?""

She studied the diagram.

"Maybe.""

"How long?""

"If I have the right parts, three or four hours.""

Margaret frowned.

"Michael, we're not sending a child into that building.""

"I'm not asking her to go anywhere.""

Maya straightened.

"I can help.""

I looked at her.

"Sweetheart, you've already done enough.""

"But it's my invention.""

I knelt beside her.

"And I'm proud of you. But you're not responsible for fixing what those adults have done.""

She looked down.

Then she said quietly:

"I don't want Brielle to get hurt because of me.""

I pulled her into a hug.

"This isn't your fault.""

She nodded against my shoulder.

But I could tell she wasn't convinced.

At 1:30 a.m., Margaret returned with news.

She had spoken to a specialist who could help preserve the digital evidence and coordinate an emergency response.

The authorities would need a precise location before they could intervene safely.

The Northstar laboratory was one possibility.

But the photograph of Brielle had been taken inside a vehicle.

We needed to know where that vehicle had gone.

Margaret examined the image.

"Look at the reflection.""

I leaned over.

In the dark window behind Brielle, there was a faint reflection of a sign.

A red-and-white sign.

I enlarged the image.

The letters were blurry.

But I could make out three words.

*RIVER INDUSTRIAL PARK.*

I recognized the location.

Northstar had purchased an abandoned warehouse there several years earlier.

It had originally been used for testing emergency communication equipment.

Daniel had once taken me there to inspect a prototype.

I remembered the place.

Two buildings.

A fenced loading yard.

A basement level.

I looked at Margaret.

"That's where they're keeping her.""

"Are you certain?""

"Almost.""

Margaret immediately contacted the specialist.

I didn't tell her that I was already planning to go.

At 3:05 a.m., I returned to the garage.

The smell of smoke still lingered.

The remains of Maya's machine sat in a plastic storage container.

I lifted the damaged frame carefully.

A few wires had survived.

The central control board was cracked, but the authentication module was intact.

Maya had recovered the memory card.

Now I needed to know whether the original hardware could be used to create a convincing demonstration.

I worked beside her for nearly an hour.

She identified the surviving components.

I sorted the screws and connectors.

She explained which circuits could still communicate.

For the first time since the fire, I saw her face brighten.

"Dad, look.""

She connected a small battery to the control board.

A tiny green light blinked.

Then another.

The display flickered.

*SUNFLOWER SYSTEM INITIALIZING.*

I smiled.

"It works.""

"Part of it.""

She carefully adjusted a wire.

A few seconds later, a signal appeared on the diagnostic screen.

*AUTHENTICATION MODULE DETECTED.*

Maya looked at me.

"The key is still there.""

I felt a surge of hope.

"Can we copy it?""

She nodded.

"But I don't want to give them the real one.""

"Neither do I.""

She opened a separate program.

"I can create a test key that looks identical but doesn't contain the original records.""

I stared at her.

"Would that work?""

"Maybe. The system will recognize it as a valid module, but it won't reveal the ownership data.""

I smiled.

"That's brilliant.""

Maya frowned.

"It's not finished yet.""

"Neither are we.""

She worked for another hour.

At 4:20 a.m., the test module was ready.

Margaret examined it.

"Can you be certain they won't notice?""

Maya shook her head.

"No. But I can make it look real.""

Margaret looked at me.

"We should not rely on deception alone. We need to coordinate with the authorities.""

I nodded.

She stepped outside to make another call.

I stayed with Maya.

She had fallen silent.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"Do you think Brielle knew what was happening?""

I considered the question.

"Some of it, probably.""

"She said I was wasting everyone's time.""

I swallowed.

"People sometimes hurt others because they think it will make them important to someone.""

Maya looked at the machine.

"Do you think she wanted Mom to love her more?""

I had no answer.

Because I remembered Brielle's face when she'd shouted that I wasn't her father.

Perhaps she'd spent years trying to prove she deserved the attention Daniel had never given her.

Perhaps Vanessa had convinced her that stealing Maya's invention was the only way to secure her future.

None of that excused what she'd done.

But it explained why she might have been vulnerable.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

"Michael?""

I stood.

"Who is this?""

"It's Rachel.""

My heart stopped.

"Where are you?""

"I can't tell you. They're watching me.""

"Are you safe?""

A nervous breath.

"For now.""

I glanced toward Margaret.

"Your daughter is with Daniel.""

Rachel began crying.

"I know.""

"How?""

"He contacted me yesterday. He said if I didn't give him the ownership key, Brielle would pay for what I did.""

I tightened my grip.

"What did you do?""

"I kept the original records. I hid the key before he could transfer everything to Northstar.""

"Where is it?""

"Not with me.""

I looked at the damaged Sunflower module.

"Is it inside Maya's invention?""

Silence.

Then Rachel whispered:

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"The original key is in the machine?""

"Not the memory card. The actual hardware module. It's embedded beneath the power regulator.""

I stared at the circuit board.

The little component Maya had identified as an authentication module.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

"Because Daniel threatened my daughter. He told me that if I exposed him, he'd make sure Brielle grew up believing I abandoned her.""

I swallowed.

"Rachel, we're trying to get her back.""

"Listen carefully. Daniel doesn't want the ownership key just to complete the transfer.""

"Then why?""

"Because it contains the names of everyone involved in the original theft. The financial records. The false patent assignments. The people who paid for the cover-up.""

I looked at Margaret.

She had returned and was listening.

Rachel continued.

"There's one more thing. The key contains a second ownership record.""

"What second record?""

A long pause.

Then she said:

"Daniel wasn't the original thief.""

I froze.

"Who was?""

Rachel's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Richard Cole.""

Before I could respond, I heard a door slam on her end.

Rachel gasped.

"Michael, they're here.""

"Where are you?""

"I have to go.""

"Rachel!""

She whispered one final sentence.

"Don't trust the person who brings you the key.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Margaret stepped closer.

"What did she say?""

I told her everything.

She looked at the circuit board.

"Then the real key is still in Maya's invention.""

I nodded.

"But someone else knows where it is.""

At 5:12 a.m., I arrived at River Industrial Park.

I had not gone alone.

Margaret had coordinated with the appropriate authorities, and a response team was positioned outside the facility.

I carried the damaged Sunflower casing and the replica authentication module.

The original key remained hidden.

A security camera turned toward my vehicle as I approached the gate.

A speaker crackled.

"Mr. Bennett.""

Daniel's voice.

"You're early.""

"Where's Brielle?""

"Inside.""

"Let me see her.""

A gate opened.

I drove into the yard.

The building looked abandoned from the outside. Broken windows. Rusted pipes. Faded warning signs.

But the lights inside were on.

Daniel waited near the entrance.

He wore the same navy suit from the previous day.

He looked calm.

Almost cheerful.

"Michael.""

I stepped out.

"Where is she?""

"Safe.""

"Show me.""

Daniel gestured toward the building.

"First, the machine.""

I lifted the damaged casing.

He studied it.

"That's all that's left?""

"That's all I could recover.""

His eyes narrowed.

"You have the ownership key?""

I held up the replica module.

Daniel examined it carefully.

Then he smiled.

"Good.""

I felt a chill.

"Now bring Brielle out.""

Daniel turned toward a security guard.

"Take him to the lower level.""

Two men approached.

I glanced toward the far side of the yard.

A small red light flashed once.

The response team was in position.

But Daniel hadn't noticed.

Inside, the building smelled of oil and damp concrete.

We passed a row of old testing rooms before reaching a metal staircase.

At the bottom was a corridor lined with locked doors.

A woman stood near the final room.

Vanessa.

She wore a black coat and held a tablet.

When she saw me, she smiled.

"You're late.""

I stared at her.

"Where's Brielle?""

"She's with her father.""

I looked at Daniel.

He didn't correct her.

Vanessa handed him the tablet.

"Everything is ready.""

Daniel inserted a keycard into the wall.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room with a metal table and two chairs.

Brielle sat against the wall.

Her wrists were tied.

When she saw me, she jumped to her feet.

"Michael!""

I rushed toward her.

A guard stepped in front of me.

"Easy.""

Daniel placed the replica module on the table.

"First, the transfer.""

I stared at him.

"You have the key.""

"Then let's finish this.""

He connected the module to a laptop.

The screen displayed a loading bar.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a red warning appeared.

*AUTHENTICATION FAILURE. ORIGINAL RECORDS NOT FOUND.*

Daniel's smile vanished.

He looked at the module.

Then at me.

"You gave me a fake.""

I said nothing.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Michael, what have you done?""

I looked at her.

"Where's Rachel?""

Her face changed.

Daniel slowly closed the laptop.

"Forget Rachel.""

"She's alive.""

Vanessa's lips parted.

I continued.

"And she knows about Richard Cole.""

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely terrified.

He turned toward Vanessa.

"You said she was handled.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"She was supposed to be under supervision.""

I watched them.

There it was.

The truth emerging between two people who had spent years lying to each other.

Then Daniel did something unexpected.

He pulled out his phone.

He pressed a button.

A second door opened behind Brielle.

A man stepped inside.

Richard Cole.

He looked at me and smiled.

"Michael, I was hoping you'd come.""

Daniel straightened.

"Richard, we have a problem.""

Richard ignored him.

He walked toward the table and placed a folder beside the laptop.

"Actually, Daniel, I think we have a solution.""

He opened the folder.

Inside was a signed document transferring the Helios ownership rights to a new company.

The listed inventor wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't Maya.

It wasn't Elena.

It was Brielle.

I stared at the paper.

"What is this?""

Richard smiled.

"The final arrangement.""

Brielle looked confused.

"Why is my name there?""

Richard crouched beside her.

"Because you're the rightful heir to the original technology.""

Daniel frowned.

"That wasn't the agreement.""

Richard looked at him.

"Agreements change.""

Then he turned toward me.

"Your daughter built a machine. But the original technology belongs to a different family. And tomorrow, the world will learn that the youngest Bennett has inherited the Helios legacy.""

I looked at Brielle.

She was shaking her head.

"I don't understand.""

Richard placed a pen in front of her.

"Sign, and you'll never have to worry about money again.""

Brielle stared at the document.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Is this why you wanted me here?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Richard pushed the pen closer.

"Sign it.""

Brielle slowly picked it up.

I took a step forward.

"Don't.""

Richard raised his hand.

One of the guards moved toward me.

Brielle looked at the document again.

Then she noticed something at the bottom of the final page.

A small line of text.

Her expression changed.

"Mr. Cole?""

Richard smiled.

"Yes?""

"Why does this say I'm transferring my mother's guardianship rights?""

The room went silent.

Richard's smile disappeared.

Brielle lifted the page.

"Why does it say my mother is legally declared incompetent?""

Vanessa went white.

Daniel looked at Richard.

And I realized that the real betrayal hadn't even happened yet.

Because Richard Cole wasn't trying to make Brielle rich.

He was preparing to take control of everything she had inherited.

Including the ownership key.

And possibly her entire future.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

A loud crash echoed through the corridor.

May you like

Someone shouted.

And in the darkness, Brielle screamed my name.
