Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Lies

Thomas Vale looked nothing like the man in my father’s old business photographs.

In those pictures, he was smiling.

Confident.

Powerful.

The kind of person everyone trusted.

The man lying in the hospital bed looked broken.

His face was pale.

His hands shook.

And when he saw my father enter the room, he started crying.

“Daniel.””

Dad stopped.

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to leave.

Then he walked closer.

“You almost died.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Who did this?””

Thomas looked at me.

Then at Michael.

Then away.

That told me everything.

He was afraid.

Not of us.

Of someone else.

“Thomas,” Dad said.

His voice was low.

“You owe my family the truth.””

Thomas swallowed.

“I know.””

A nurse told us we only had a few minutes.

So Thomas wasted none of them.

“Your wife was right.””

Dad looked down.

“I know.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

He looked at me.

“Your mother wasn’t just investigating missing money.””

I stepped closer.

“Then what was she investigating?””

Thomas looked at the floor.

“The reason people were disappearing.””

The room went cold.

“People?””

Thomas nodded.

“Employees who found evidence. Accountants who asked questions. Anyone who got too close.””

Dad’s face changed.

“Vanessa?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“She was part of it.””

I already knew that.

But hearing it from him made it real.

“Who was above her?”” Michael asked.

Thomas didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

His eyes moved toward my father.

And my heart stopped.

“No.””

Dad looked confused.

“Why are you looking at me?””

Thomas shook his head quickly.

“Not you.””

He looked at the door.

“The person you trusted most.””

The door opened.

A police officer entered.

“Mr. Carter?””

Dad turned.

“Yes?””

The officer held up a photograph.

“We found this in Thomas Vale’s vehicle.””

He handed it to him.

Dad looked at it.

Then immediately dropped it.

I picked it up.

The photograph showed a meeting.

Vanessa.

Thomas.

And another person.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had been in our house countless times.

Someone who had comforted me after my mother died.

My hands went numb.

“No.””

Dad whispered.

Because he recognized the person too.

My uncle Michael.

The room exploded into silence.

Michael stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

Dad looked at him.

“You tell me.””

Michael’s face went pale.

“I didn’t do this.””

The officer looked at him carefully.

“We’re going to need you to come with us.””

I stared at my uncle.

The man who brought my mother’s letter.

The man who claimed he wanted the truth.

The man who said he came to save us.

My heart felt crushed.

Because my mother’s final message came back to me.

*Trust the person who tried to save you, not the person who says they did.*

Had she been warning me about Michael?

Had I trusted the wrong person?

Michael looked at me.

“Emma, listen to me.””

I couldn’t move.

“I swear to you, I didn’t betray your mother.””

The officer stepped closer.

But before Michael left, he looked at Dad.

“There’s one thing you need to know.””

Dad stared at him.

“What?””

Michael’s eyes moved to me.

“The bag wasn’t the only thing your mother hid.””

My breath caught.

“What else?””

Michael hesitated.

Then said:

“She hid the truth about who your real father is.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The entire world seemed to stop.

Dad looked at me.

I looked at him.

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

I wondered if the man who raised me was the man who created me.
