Chapter 6: The Secret Hidden in Leather

The next morning, Vanessa’s side of the closet was empty.

Not completely.

Just enough.

Enough to show she hadn’t left forever.

Enough to show she planned to return.

Her jewelry box was gone.

Her important documents were gone.

But a framed family photo remained on the dresser.

A picture from years ago.

My father.

Vanessa.

Lily.

And me.

Standing at the edge.

Like I had always been placed there.

Not included.

Just present.

I stared at the photo until Dad walked in.

“She took money from the account.””

I turned.

“What?””

He held a folder.

“Over the last few years.””

My stomach dropped.

“How much?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“How much, Dad?””

“Almost half a million dollars.””

I sat down.

The number didn’t feel real.

“She stole from you?””

Dad looked at the picture.

“I don’t know anymore.””

That scared me.

Because my father wasn’t someone who admitted uncertainty.

Michael had stayed the night.

Not because we trusted him completely.

But because we didn’t know who else we could trust.

The three of us sat around the kitchen table with the damaged handbag between us.

The police had returned it temporarily after learning about the note.

Now the question was simple.

What had my mother hidden?

Michael carefully examined the torn lining.

“She knew someone would eventually find this.””

Dad frowned.

“Why would she put evidence in a bag?””

“Because nobody would look.””

Michael touched the designer logo.

“Everyone sees the price first.””

I thought about that.

The $3,000 handbag.

The thing everyone judged me for.

The thing Lily used to accuse me of being arrogant.

Nobody had seen what it really was.

A message.

A warning.

A last attempt from my mother.

Michael pulled out a small tool and carefully opened part of the damaged lining.

Dad watched.

“You’ve done this before.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart tightened.

“When?””

He looked at me.

“After your mother died.””

The room became quiet.

“I searched everywhere,” he continued.

“Her apartment. Her office. Her car.””

“Why didn’t you tell Dad?””

Michael looked at my father.

“Because I thought he was involved.””

Dad looked hurt.

“Me?””

“I was wrong.””

The honesty surprised me.

Michael continued working.

Then suddenly, he stopped.

“There.””

A small metal object fell onto the table.

Not jewelry.

Not a flash drive.

A tiny key.

My father picked it up.

“What does this open?””

Michael looked at it carefully.

“I don’t know.””

I noticed something engraved on it.

A number.

*417*

Michael’s face changed.

“What?””

He grabbed the key.

“Where did she put this?””

“In the bag.””

He looked terrified.

“Emma, your mother didn’t hide this randomly.””

“What does 417 mean?””

Michael stood.

“Your mother used numbers when she wanted to remember something.””

Dad looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying 417 was important.””

I looked at the handbag.

The ruined leather.

The torn lining.

The thing that had caused so much pain.

Then I remembered Lily’s message.

*I didn’t think he would actually find out what happened to the bag.*

She hadn’t been talking about the dress.

She had been talking about the secret.

“Lily knew,” I whispered.

Dad looked at me.

“What?””

“She knew about the bag.””

Michael became serious.

“We need to find her.””

We found Lily two hours later.

Not at school.

Not with friends.

At the old storage building behind her mother’s previous office.

The place Vanessa had supposedly closed years ago.

She was standing beside a locker.

And when she saw us, her face turned white.

“Emma.””

I walked closer.

“What’s inside?””

She looked at the locker.

Then at me.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

My anger rose.

“You destroyed my dress.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“You knew about the bag.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because my mother told me to get rid of it.””

Dad stepped forward.

“What did she say?””

Lily swallowed.

“She said if Emma ever found the bag, everything would fall apart.””

Michael stared at her.

“Where is the key?””

Lily looked at the small object in Dad’s hand.

Her expression changed.

“You found it.””

The words made everyone freeze.

Dad moved closer.

“You know what it opens.””

Lily started crying.

“I didn’t know what was inside.””

“Then why were you scared?””

She looked at me.

And for the first time since I had known her, she looked genuinely sorry.

“Because my mom told me the bag belonged to someone who could destroy our family.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Michael stepped toward the locker.

“Open it.””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because the last time someone opened something your mother left behind…”

Her voice broke.

“She disappeared.””

The key was still in Dad’s hand.

The locker number was 417.

And as he inserted the key into the lock, I realized something terrifying.

Whatever was inside had been hidden for years.

Waiting.

Not for my father.

Not for Vanessa.

Not for Lily.

For me.

May you like

The lock clicked.

And the door slowly began to open.
