Chapter 2: The Price of What She Took

The first cut made a sound I will never forget.

Not because it was loud.

It wasn’t.

It was just a tiny tearing sound.

But everyone in that bedroom heard it.

The expensive leather of the Louis Vuitton handbag split beneath the scissors.

Lily’s face went pale.

“Dad!””

Vanessa rushed forward.

“Daniel, stop!””

But my father held up his hand.

Nobody had ever seen him like that before.

Not angry.

Not shouting.

Just completely certain.

“You both said it was just a thing,” Dad said quietly.

He looked at the ruined dress on the floor.

“So let’s talk about things.””

I stood frozen.

I didn’t know what scared me more.

The fact that he was cutting a $3,000 handbag…

Or the fact that I understood why.

“Daniel, this is insane,” Vanessa said.

Dad looked at her.

“Is it?””

“Yes! That bag cost thousands!””

He nodded.

“Exactly.””

He looked at Lily.

“Emma’s dress cost less than this bag.””

Lily swallowed.

“That doesn’t matter.””

Dad made another cut.

The leather separated.

“It matters to her.””

Lily’s eyes filled with anger.

“Why are you taking her side?””

Dad stared at her.

“I’m not taking sides.””

His voice became colder.

“I’m looking at what happened.””

Nobody spoke.

The room felt smaller.

I watched my father destroy something valuable, and part of me wanted to stop him.

I knew how much that bag cost.

I knew how much effort went into it.

But another part of me needed to see whether someone would finally protect me.

Dad turned toward me.

“Emma, tell me the truth.””

I wiped my face.

“About what?””

“Has Lily done things like this before?””

The question hung in the air.

Vanessa immediately answered.

“No.””

Too quickly.

Dad noticed.

“Emma?””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Lily.

Then my father.

I had spent years protecting everyone else’s feelings.

But nobody had protected mine.

“Yes,” I said.

Lily’s expression changed.

“Emma, don’t.””

I ignored her.

“She hides my things. She ruins my homework sometimes. She tells people at school that I’m only invited places because Dad feels guilty about Mom.””

Dad went still.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s ridiculous.””

“It’s true.””

“You’re exaggerating.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“You knew?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Daniel, teenagers fight.””

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

“This isn’t fighting.””

Lily stepped forward.

“You’re making me look like a monster.””

Dad looked at the handbag in his hands.

Then at the dress.

“Your actions are doing that.””

For the first time, Lily looked afraid.

Not sorry.

Afraid.

Because she realized the person who always protected her was no longer protecting her.

She turned to Vanessa.

“Mom.””

Vanessa immediately moved beside her.

“Daniel, you’re overreacting because you came home in the middle of an emotional moment.””

Dad laughed once.

A humorless sound.

“No. I’m reacting because I should have noticed years ago.””

That sentence hurt me.

Because I knew he was right.

My father loved me.

I never doubted that.

But love wasn’t always enough.

Sometimes you needed someone to look closer.

Someone to notice the cracks.

Someone to ask why their child had become quieter.

Dad placed the ruined handbag on the bed.

“I’m replacing Emma’s dress.””

I shook my head.

“Dad, you don’t have to.””

“Yes, I do.””

“I can save again.””

“No.””

His eyes softened.

“You shouldn’t have to.””

The words nearly broke me.

Because I had waited years to hear them.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“So what? You’re going to punish Lily forever because she made a mistake?””

Dad looked at her.

“A mistake is spilling coffee.””

He pointed at the dress.

“This was a choice.””

Nobody had an answer.

The next morning, everything changed.

Lily refused to apologize.

Instead, she posted a message online saying her father had “humiliated” her over a “stupid bag.””

By lunchtime, relatives were calling.

Some defended her.

Some asked questions.

And then my aunt sent Dad a screenshot.

A message Lily had accidentally posted publicly before deleting it.

It was only one sentence.

But it revealed something none of us expected.

Dad stared at the screen for a long time.

Then he handed me the phone.

My hands shook as I read the words:

“I didn’t think he would actually find out what happened to the bag.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Dad’s face changed.

Because suddenly he wasn’t looking at the dress anymore.

He was looking at the handbag.

May you like

And he whispered:

“Emma… I don’t think Lily destroyed your dress by accident.””
