Chapter 9: The Bride's Price
I called Vanessa before Daniel could stop me.
She answered almost immediately.
"Emma?""
"Your name is on the original transfer proposal.""
Silence.
I could hear traffic in the background and the faint sound of a door closing.
"What proposal?"" she asked.
"The transfer of my father's controlling shares. The document lists you as a secondary beneficiary.""
Her breathing changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"From the original records.""
"Those records shouldn't exist.""
The words came out before she could stop them.
I went still.
"What did you say?""
"Nothing.""
"Vanessa, you just admitted you knew about the records.""
"I meant the records Adrian kept.""
"No. You said they shouldn't exist.""
She began crying.
"Emma, please. You don't understand.""
"Then explain it.""
"I didn't ask to be named.""
"Who named you?""
"Adrian.""
"When?""
"Before the divorce.""
I stared at the wall.
"Why?""
"Because he said he needed someone he could trust to help manage the assets if the transfer went through.""
"And you believed him?""
"I wanted to believe him.""
"Stop saying that. You used that excuse when you slept with my husband. You used it when you gave him my emails.
You used it when you walked into a bank under my name. At what point did you stop believing him and start helping him?""
She sobbed.
"I know what I did was wrong.""
"Then tell me the truth.""
"I will.""
"When?""
"Now.""
I waited.
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"Adrian told me the transfer was a temporary restructuring. He said your father's trust had become too complicated and that he needed control of the shares to keep the company solvent.""
"Did he tell you about the eight million dollars?""
"No.""
"Did he tell you Michael Grant had raised concerns?""
"Not at first.""
"When did you find out?""
"After the divorce.""
I closed my eyes.
"How?""
"I found a folder in his office. It contained emails between Adrian and the former chief financial officer. They were discussing the transfer and the possibility of using the shares as collateral for another loan.""
"Who was the former CFO?""
"Jonathan Mercer.""
I looked at the documents on the table.
"Jonathan refused to approve the transfer.""
"Yes.""
"How do you know?""
"Because Adrian was furious about it. He told me Jonathan had become a problem and that the board needed to be convinced he was acting out of spite.""
I felt a chill.
"Did Adrian have anything to do with Michael's death?""
Vanessa went silent.
"Vanessa?""
"I don't know.""
"Did he ever say anything about it?""
"Not directly. But a few days after Michael died, Adrian told someone on the phone that the matter had been dealt with.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Who was he talking to?""
"I don't know. I was outside his office. I heard him say that the records had been recovered and that nobody needed to worry about Michael anymore.""
I swallowed.
"Did you report it?""
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because I was afraid. And because I thought if I stayed with Adrian, he would protect me.""
"Protect you from what?""
She gave a broken laugh.
"From the truth.""
I stared at the transfer proposal.
Her name was there.
Not in the margin.
Not in an incidental note.
It was printed beneath a clause describing the proposed allocation of shares if the transfer was completed.
"How many shares were you supposed to receive?"" I asked.
"Five percent.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Five percent of my father's company?""
"Adrian said it was compensation for helping manage the transition.""
"Helping manage what? My stolen inheritance?""
"I know how it sounds.""
"It sounds exactly like what it is.""
"I never received the shares, Emma.""
"But you agreed to accept them.""
She didn't answer.
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
The admission hurt less than I expected.
Perhaps because the betrayal had already happened in so many forms that another confession could no longer surprise me.
"Why did you go to the bank?""
"Adrian said there was an envelope that could jeopardize the restructuring. He told me to accompany the company representative and confirm that the retrieval was authorized.""
"You knew the signature wasn't mine.""
"I suspected it.""
"That isn't the same as knowing.""
"No," she whispered.
"It isn't.""
"Then why didn't you stop it?""
"Because I thought if the documents disappeared, the review would end. I thought Adrian would finally leave me alone.""
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
Not love.
Not loyalty.
Fear.
Vanessa had helped Adrian betray me because she wanted the rewards of being chosen. Then she'd helped him conceal the evidence because she feared losing what she'd gained.
Now that the arrangement was collapsing, she wanted to become the person who had tried to help.
"Emma, I can give you everything I have," she said.
"The emails. The photographs. The messages. I can testify.""
"Why should I believe you?""
"Because I'm telling you the truth.""
"You've told me the truth only when lying became more dangerous.""
She went quiet.
Then she said, "You're right.""
I hadn't expected that.
"I am not asking you to forgive me," she continued.
"I'm asking you to let me correct what I can.""
I looked down at Lily.
My daughter had opened her eyes and was watching me with the unfocused curiosity of a newborn.
I brushed a finger across her cheek.
"Your lawyer can contact mine," I said.
"Preserve everything. Do not delete messages, alter documents, or contact Adrian about what you've told me.""
"I won't.""
"And Vanessa?""
"Yes?""
"If you are lying about any part of this, I will not protect you from the consequences.""
"I understand.""
I ended the call.
My hands were cold.
But my mind was clear.
Vanessa wasn't innocent.
Neither was Adrian.
And whatever happened next, I would not let either of them rewrite the past to make themselves look better.
At 8:12 a.m., Daniel called.
"The board has suspended the vote for forty-eight hours.""
I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
"Does that mean the restructuring is stopped?""
"Temporarily. The independent directors want the disputed transfer reviewed before they approve any major asset movement. The trustees are seeking additional protections.""
"Can Adrian still move money?""
"Some transactions may continue under existing authority. We're working to determine the scope of any restrictions.""
I looked at the transfer proposal.
"And Vanessa?""
"Her attorney has contacted us. She is prepared to provide a statement and preserve the electronic records in her possession.""
"She admitted she was named as a beneficiary.""
"She has not yet given a formal statement. We need to verify everything independently.""
I nodded, though he couldn't see me.
"What's next?""
"We need the original authorization trail. Jonathan's records give us a strong lead, but we still need to establish who prepared the disputed signature page and who submitted it.""
I looked at the handwritten initials on Michael's note.
J.M.
"Could Jonathan have done it?""
"His current account is that he refused to approve the transfer and warned your father about the altered signature. We need to test that account against the records.""
"Do you believe him?""
"I believe his statement is consistent with the documents we've seen so far. That's not the same as proving every detail.""
I appreciated the distinction.
"All right.""
Daniel paused.
"There's another issue. The trustees have located the law firm that prepared the original transfer proposal. They found an archived email referring to a sealed appendix.""
My heart began to pound.
"The same appendix mentioned in the board minutes?""
"Possibly. The firm is reviewing its archive now.""
"What's in it?""
"We don't know.""
I looked at the brass key.
"Could it be the envelope Vanessa retrieved?""
"That's one possibility. But we shouldn't assume they're the same document until we can compare the descriptions.""
I swallowed.
"How long will it take?""
"They're trying to identify the file today.""
I stared at the window.
Forty-eight hours.
That was all the time the board had given the investigation before the restructuring could be reconsidered.
Forty-eight hours to establish who forged my signature.
Forty-eight hours to trace the money.
Forty-eight hours to find out whether Michael Grant's death had any connection to the documents he was trying to expose.
And forty-eight hours to discover why my father had been so certain that the original authorization trail would matter.
At 10:30, my doctor finally cleared me for discharge, provided I rested at home and returned for follow-up appointments.
My mother packed our belongings while a nurse showed me how to secure Lily's car seat.
I signed the discharge forms slowly, checking each page before I wrote my name.
When the nurse handed me the final document, I stared at the signature line.
For a moment, I thought about the forged transfer agreement.
Someone had taken my name and used it to move millions of dollars.
Someone had convinced a bank that I had authorized access to my father's private records.
Someone had turned my signature into a weapon against me.
I signed carefully.
Then I asked the nurse to witness it.
She looked surprised.
"Of course.""
I watched her sign the witness line.
Only after the ink dried did I place the papers in my bag.
It was a small thing.
But it mattered to me.
I was no longer going to assume that a document was harmless because someone I trusted told me it was.
As my mother helped me into my coat, my phone vibrated.
An email from Daniel.
*Subject: Urgent—Archived transfer records located.*
I opened it.
The law firm had found the original draft of the transfer proposal, along with a chain of emails between Adrian, the former CFO, and an outside consultant.
The first draft did not contain my signature.
It contained a blank authorization page.
A later version included a scanned signature that matched the disputed document.
The email attaching that version had been sent from an account registered to Carter Holdings.
But the person who had uploaded the scanned signature was not Adrian.
It was someone using a temporary account created for the transaction.
Daniel had attached a screenshot.
At the bottom of the email was the account holder's name.
*Vanessa Reed.*
I stared at it.
For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.
Vanessa had claimed she never knew about the forged signature.
But the archived records showed that her account had uploaded the altered page.
Perhaps Adrian had used her credentials.
Perhaps she had done it willingly.
Perhaps the truth was worse than either possibility.
I called Daniel.
"Does this prove Vanessa forged my signature?""
"No," he said immediately.
"It proves that a file containing the disputed signature was uploaded through an account associated with her. We still need to establish who controlled the account and who created the file.""
"But she told me she didn't know.""
"Her statement will need to be reconciled with this evidence.""
I looked at Lily's car seat.
The nurse had just wheeled it into the corridor.
"Daniel, I need you to understand something. If Vanessa is lying, I want the truth exposed. I don't care whether she was Adrian's mistress or his accomplice.""
"That's the correct approach. We follow the evidence.""
I ended the call.
My mother looked at my face.
"What happened?""
I showed her the email.
She read it, then lowered the phone.
"Do you think Vanessa forged your signature?""
"I don't know.""
"Do you think Adrian did?""
"I don't know that either.""
I adjusted Lily's blanket.
"But I know they both had something to gain.""
My mother touched my shoulder.
"Then let the evidence tell you what happened.""
I nodded.
We left the hospital shortly before noon.
The air outside was cold and bright. Brooklyn's streets shone after the rain, and the city smelled of wet pavement and coffee.
For the first time in months, I was going home with something that belonged entirely to me.
My daughter.
I settled into the back seat beside her, checking the straps twice.
As the car pulled away, my phone rang.
An unfamiliar number.
I answered cautiously.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
"Ms. Bennett? My name is Jonathan Mercer.""
I sat upright.
"Jonathan?""
"Yes. Daniel Price gave me your number through his office.""
"Are you all right?""
"I'm safe.""
He sounded exhausted.
"I've been reviewing the records I kept. There's something I need to tell you before the next board meeting.""
"What is it?""
"The transfer agreement wasn't created to give Adrian control of the shares.""
I stared at him.
"What do you mean?""
"It was created to trigger a clause in your father's trust. If the controlling shares were transferred without your authorization, the trustees would gain the right to freeze certain related assets.""
I felt my breath catch.
"Then why would Adrian try to transfer them?""
"Because he believed the clause had been removed from the final version of the trust.""
"Was it?""
"No.""
Jonathan paused.
"Your father had a separate amendment prepared. It was never filed with the company's ordinary records.""
I looked at the key in my bag.
"Where is it?""
"I don't know. But the sealed appendix may identify where he kept it.""
"And Vanessa retrieved the envelope from the bank.""
"Then she may have taken the very document Adrian needed to destroy.""
My pulse quickened.
"Why would he need to destroy it if the transfer would trigger a review?""
"Because the clause does more than freeze assets, Emma.""
His voice dropped.
"It also names the person who assumes temporary control of the trust if the transfer is proven fraudulent.""
I looked at Lily.
"Who?""
Jonathan was silent for a moment.
Then he said, "Your father named you.""
I closed my eyes.
For six months, Adrian had believed he had won our divorce.
He had taken the apartment, the company, and the public story of our marriage.
But my father had built a safeguard that Adrian never understood.
A safeguard that could return control of the trust to me.
"Jonathan," I whispered, "what do we need to do?""
"Find the sealed appendix. Confirm the clause. Then present it to the trustees before Adrian can challenge it.""
"Can we do that?""
"Yes.""
He paused.
"But there's one more thing.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"The appendix contains the name of the person your father believed had helped Adrian move the money.""
I gripped the phone.
"Who?""
Jonathan's answer was barely audible.
"The person who signed the original authorization wasn't Vanessa Reed.""
I went cold.
"Then who was it?""
He took a breath.
"It was someone your father trusted enough to give access to everything.""
The call ended before he could say another word.
I stared at the phone.
Then a message appeared from Daniel.
*The law firm has located the sealed appendix. We're sending it to the trustees for immediate review.*
A second message followed.
*Emma, the document names a person who has not appeared in any of our previous interviews. You need to prepare yourself.*
I looked out at the city moving past the window.
Lily slept beside me.
The company my father had built was hanging in the balance.
Adrian was still free to tell his version of the story.
Vanessa had lied about her role.
And somewhere in the records, a trusted person's name waited to be uncovered.
For the first time, I understood that the greatest betrayal might not have come from my husband at all.
May you like
It might have come from the one person who had helped him convince me that everything was safe.
And when Daniel finally called back, the name he gave me would change everything I thought I knew about my father's final months.
