Chapter 7: The Woman Who Stole My Father's Last Secret
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Vanessa had been in my hospital room less than an hour earlier, crying into the phone and claiming she wanted to help me.
Now Daniel was telling me she had accessed my father's safe-deposit box using a signature that wasn't mine.
"Say that again," I whispered.
"Vanessa Reed accompanied someone from Carter Holdings to the bank three weeks ago," Daniel repeated.
"The access request bears your signature. The bank is checking the identity documents and the accompanying records.""
"Three weeks ago, I was barely leaving my mother's house.""
"I understand.""
"No, Daniel. You don't understand. I didn't authorize anyone to enter that box. I didn't even know the key existed until today.""
"I believe you, Emma. But we need to establish who used your identity and what was removed.""
I looked at Lily, sleeping in her bassinet.
Her tiny chest rose and fell beneath the blanket.
Three weeks ago, I had been preparing for her arrival, trying to finish the nursery while my mother insisted I needed more pillows. I had spent hours sorting baby clothes and folding blankets, imagining a future that had nothing to do with Adrian Carter.
Meanwhile, someone had been digging through my father's secrets.
Someone had been using my name.
"Was anything else taken?"" I asked.
"We don't know yet.""
"Then find out.""
"We will. In the meantime, don't contact Vanessa directly.""
I glanced at my phone.
Her number was still on the screen.
"She called me less than an hour ago.""
Daniel went quiet.
"What did she tell you?""
I explained the call, including the photographs she claimed to have taken from Adrian's laptop and her statement about the email mentioning Michael Grant.
When I finished, Daniel exhaled slowly.
"Did she send you anything?""
"No.""
"Good. Don't ask her to send anything to your personal email. Her attorney should arrange a secure transfer of the material to ours.""
"And if she deletes it?""
"Then we'll document what she told you and pursue other sources of evidence.""
I stared at the rainwater drying on the window.
"What if she's lying about everything?""
"Then the evidence will expose that, too.""
I wished I could borrow his certainty.
"Daniel, why would Vanessa steal something from my father's box if she already had access to Adrian's files?""
"She may have been acting on his instructions. She may have acted independently. Or someone may have used her identity without her knowledge. We don't have enough information to conclude which.""
"But the bank has her name.""
"Her presence is evidence of something. It isn't proof of the entire story.""
I swallowed.
"All right.""
"Emma, please get some rest. I'll call you when I have confirmation from the bank.""
He ended the call.
I set my phone down.
Then I picked it up again.
I wanted to call Vanessa.
I wanted to demand to know why she had stood in my hospital room pretending to be frightened while concealing the fact that she'd entered my father's safe-deposit box.
But I remembered Daniel's warning.
Preserve the evidence.
Don't act on anger.
For years, Adrian had counted on me reacting emotionally while he prepared his next move.
I wasn't going to make the same mistake again.
Instead, I opened a blank message to Daniel.
Please preserve the bank records, including the access request, identification documents, surveillance footage, and any correspondence relating to box 317.
I sent it.
Then I called my mother.
"Can you sit with Lily for a moment?""
She appeared at my bedside almost immediately.
"What's wrong?""
"I need to speak to someone.""
She looked at my face and didn't ask any more questions.
"Go ahead. I'll stay with her.""
I stepped into the corridor and called Vanessa.
She answered on the second ring.
"Emma?""
"Did you access my father's safe-deposit box three weeks ago?""
Silence.
Then a sharp intake of breath.
"Who told you?""
That was all I needed to hear.
"You did.""
"No, I didn't.""
"You told me you found a file on Adrian's laptop. You told me you wanted to help. But you never mentioned entering a bank under my name.""
"Emma, I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
She began crying.
"I didn't know what was in the box.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
"Adrian asked me to go with someone from the company. He said there were old documents that needed to be retrieved before a compliance review.""
"Who?""
"I don't know his full name. He worked in corporate administration. I had seen him at the office.""
"What did you sign?""
"Nothing.""
"Then how did you get into the box?""
"Adrian said the paperwork had already been arranged.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you see my signature?""
She didn't answer.
"Vanessa.""
"Yes.""
"Was it mine?""
"I thought it was.""
"Did you compare it with my real signature?""
"No.""
"Did you even ask why Adrian needed you to accompany someone to my father's safe-deposit box?""
Her voice broke.
"He said you had authorized the retrieval before the divorce. He said it was part of the settlement.""
"That's impossible.""
"I know that now.""
I pressed my fingertips against the cool corridor wall.
"What did you take?""
"An envelope.""
"What's in it?""
"I don't know.""
"You carried it out of a bank and didn't look inside?""
"I wasn't supposed to.""
"Who took it?""
"The man from Carter Holdings.""
"Did he give it to Adrian?""
"I don't know.""
"Where is it now?""
"I don't know, Emma!""
Her voice rose, then fell into a sob.
"I swear I don't know.""
I wanted to believe that she was telling the truth.
But Vanessa had lied to me too many times for tears to mean anything.
"Why did you call me earlier?""
"Because I found something on Adrian's laptop.""
"You could have told me about the bank.""
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of him.""
The answer came so quickly that I stopped breathing for a moment.
Vanessa continued.
"You think you know Adrian because you were married to him. But you don't know what he's like when he thinks someone has betrayed him.""
I almost laughed.
"Vanessa, I know exactly what he's like.""
"No. You know what he was like when he wanted something from you.""
Her words unsettled me.
"What does that mean?""
She hesitated.
"After Michael Grant died, Adrian changed. He started checking everyone's emails. He made the IT department install new monitoring software. He told the board that someone was stealing company information.""
"Was someone?""
"I don't know. But he kept a list of employees he thought were disloyal.""
"And your name was on it?""
"No.""
She paused.
"Yours was.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"Why?""
"Because you had access to the trust.""
"That doesn't make sense. I was his wife.""
"That's what I thought, too.""
I stared at the closed hospital room door.
"Vanessa, did Adrian ever ask you to copy my emails?""
She was silent.
"Did he?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"He said he needed to understand what you were telling your father about the business.""
My stomach twisted.
"So you gave him my private correspondence.""
"I thought it was about protecting the company.""
"You thought a lot of things.""
"I know.""
Her voice softened.
"Emma, I can't change what I did. But I can tell you something else. The file on his laptop includes an email sent the day Michael died.""
I gripped my phone.
"What does it say?""
"I couldn't read all of it. But the subject line was 'Final authorization.'' The message referred to an envelope and said the original had to be recovered before the board meeting.""
"Recovered from where?""
"I don't know. There was an attachment, but I didn't open it.""
"Can you identify the sender?""
"I think so. It was the same initials as the note you mentioned earlier.""
"J.M.?""
"Yes.""
The initials seemed to echo in my head.
"Who is J.M., Vanessa?""
"I don't know.""
I heard a door slam on her end.
She gasped.
"Emma, I have to go.""
"Wait. Did Adrian come back?""
"No.""
"Then who was that?""
"I can't talk.""
"Vanessa—"
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
A moment later, a message appeared.
*Vanessa: Please don't call me again. I will speak through my lawyer.*
I read it twice.
Then I returned to my room.
My mother was sitting beside Lily's bassinet, gently smoothing the blanket.
She looked up when I entered.
"What happened?""
"Vanessa admitted she went to the bank.""
My mother went pale.
"Why?""
"Adrian told her to retrieve an envelope.""
"And she did?""
"Yes.""
My mother closed her eyes.
"Your father must have known someone would try to get to those records.""
I sat down slowly.
"He did.""
I took the brass key from my pocket and placed it on the table.
"That's why he left this with the trustees.""
My mother touched the key.
"What do you think was in the envelope?""
"I don't know.""
I looked at Lily.
"But whatever it was, Adrian was afraid enough to send someone after it.""
At seven that evening, Daniel arrived with an update.
He stood beside the bed, holding a tablet.
"The bank has confirmed the access request," he said.
"The signature is not the only problem.""
I sat up.
"What else?""
"The request included a copy of your identification and a notarized authorization. The notary has denied witnessing your signature.""
I stared at him.
"So someone forged everything.""
"That is a possibility the investigators will need to examine. The bank's records also indicate that the envelope removed from the box was marked with your father's initials.""
"Was it opened?""
"The surveillance footage shows the employee placing it inside a sealed retrieval bag. The person who collected it signed for the bag and left with the other individual.""
"Can we identify them?""
"One of them is the Carter Holdings employee Vanessa described. The other person's face is partially visible in the footage, but the bank is working to confirm the identity.""
"Did Vanessa know what was inside?""
"She has told her lawyer that she did not.""
"Do you believe her?""
Daniel paused.
"I believe we need evidence before deciding.""
He set the tablet on the table.
"There's another development. The trustees have obtained a copy of the original board minutes from the year Michael Grant died.""
"And?""
"The minutes refer to a proposed transfer of your father's controlling shares. The proposal was postponed because one board member refused to approve it.""
"Who?""
Daniel turned the tablet toward me.
A name appeared beside a scanned signature.
*Jonathan Mercer.*
I frowned.
"Who is he?""
"Former chief financial officer of Carter Holdings.""
Thomas, who had returned to the hospital to give a formal statement, stiffened.
"Jonathan Mercer left the company shortly after Michael died.""
"Why?"" I asked.
"He said he had a family emergency," Thomas replied.
"He never came back.""
Daniel nodded.
"His resignation was abrupt. The records suggest that he had been involved in reviewing the proposed transfer.""
"Can we contact him?""
"We're trying.""
I looked at the name again.
Jonathan Mercer.
J.M.
The initials from Michael's note.
The initials from Vanessa's description of Adrian's email.
The person who had refused to approve the transfer.
"He's the missing witness," I whispered.
"Possibly," Daniel said.
"But we need to locate him and hear his account before drawing conclusions.""
Thomas stared at the tablet.
"If Jonathan kept copies of the original records, he may know who prepared the transfer agreement.""
"Can he prove it?"" I asked.
"He may be able to explain the authorization trail.""
I looked at Lily.
For the first time, the path ahead seemed to have a shape.
We needed the original records.
We needed to establish who had forged my signature.
And we needed to find Jonathan Mercer before Adrian could reach him.
Daniel closed the tablet.
"There's one more thing. Carter Holdings has moved the board meeting forward to eight tomorrow morning.""
My heart lurched.
"Why?""
"Because Adrian has requested an expedited vote on the restructuring.""
"Can he do that?""
"He can request it. Whether the board can lawfully proceed while the ownership dispute is unresolved is a separate question.""
I stared at him.
"He knows we're close.""
"That is possible.""
Daniel gathered his papers.
"We're seeking urgent relief tonight. The trustees are also contacting the board's independent directors.""
"What if they don't act in time?""
"Then we will have to respond to whatever decision is made.""
I looked down at the brass key.
My father had left me a secret.
Adrian had sent Vanessa to retrieve it.
And somewhere, a former executive held the truth that might connect everything.
I had spent years believing that my greatest mistake was trusting Adrian.
Now I wondered whether my father's greatest mistake had been trusting the wrong person with the evidence.
Daniel reached the door.
"Emma, try to rest. Tomorrow could be difficult.""
After he left, my mother drew the curtains and dimmed the lights.
I held Lily against my chest until her breathing settled.
Then my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message.
*You want to know what happened to Michael Grant? Stop looking for Jonathan Mercer.*
A second message appeared before I could respond.
*He knows who signed your father's transfer agreement. And if Adrian finds him first, you'll never hear the truth.*
I stared at the screen.
Then I looked at the clock.
7:43 p.m.
Tomorrow's board meeting was less than twelve hours away.
May you like
And someone had just confirmed what I feared most.
The race to find Jonathan Mercer had already begun.
