Chapter 8: The Man Adrian Tried to Erase
At 5:15 the next morning, I was awake.
Lily had finally fallen asleep after an hour of feeding, burping, and crying, but my mind refused to settle.
I lay against the hospital pillows, watching the city brighten beyond the window.
Every few minutes, I checked my phone.
No new messages.
No calls from Daniel.
No word about Jonathan Mercer.
I knew I couldn't attend the board meeting. My doctor had made that perfectly clear. My blood pressure needed monitoring, and I was not leaving the hospital before she was satisfied that I was stable.
But I could still make decisions.
At 5:32, I called Daniel.
He answered on the fourth ring.
"Emma?""
"Have you found Jonathan?""
"Not yet. His last confirmed address is in Connecticut, but the property records are outdated.""
"Can you send someone there?""
"We've contacted his attorney and requested assistance from the trustees' investigators. We won't send anyone to confront him without confirming where he is.""
I sat up.
"Adrian may already know where he is.""
"That's possible.""
"Then we need to move faster.""
"We are moving as quickly as we can.""
I heard papers rustling on his end.
"The trustees have filed an emergency application to prevent the proposed restructuring until the ownership dispute can be reviewed. We expect an update before the meeting.""
"What if the board votes anyway?""
"We'll address that if it happens.""
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
"I hate that answer.""
"I know.""
"Can you tell me something useful?""
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he said, "We found the company that prepared the original transfer agreement.""
I sat straighter.
"Who?""
"A law firm that represented Carter Holdings at the time. The partner responsible for the transaction has retired, but the firm still has archived files.""
"Do they have the first draft?""
"They haven't confirmed that yet. We're requesting preservation of all relevant records.""
I closed my eyes.
"Everything comes back to that document.""
"Yes. If we can establish who prepared it, who authorized it, and how the disputed signature was introduced, we'll have a much clearer picture.""
I thought of the message.
He knows who signed your father's transfer agreement.
"Daniel, I received another anonymous message last night.""
I read it aloud.
He didn't interrupt.
When I finished, his voice had hardened.
"Forward the message to me. Don't reply.""
"Could it be Jonathan?""
"It could be someone trying to misdirect us. We need to authenticate the source before drawing conclusions.""
"How?""
"We can preserve the message, examine the available metadata, and compare it with any known communications. But an unknown number alone won't tell us who sent it.""
I forwarded the screenshots.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
"Do you think Michael's death was connected to the transfers?""
Daniel paused.
"I think the timing deserves scrutiny. But we cannot responsibly conclude that his death was anything other than an accident without evidence supporting that claim.""
I appreciated the distinction, even though I hated the uncertainty.
"All right.""
"Emma, I need you to promise me something.""
"What?""
"If Adrian contacts you, don't meet him alone. Don't accept documents from him. Don't sign anything, even if he says it's routine.""
I looked at Lily.
"I promise.""
"And don't let anyone convince you that protecting your daughter requires you to settle this quietly.""
My throat tightened.
"That's exactly what he would say.""
"Then remember that you have choices.""
He ended the call.
I placed my phone on the bedside table.
For a moment, I allowed myself to imagine a future in which Adrian was simply Lily's biological father, a fact recorded on a piece of paper rather than a force that controlled every room I entered.
I imagined raising her without having to explain why her father used money as a weapon.
I imagined never hearing his voice again.
Then a nurse knocked and entered with a blood pressure monitor.
"Let's see how you're doing this morning.""
She wrapped the cuff around my arm.
When the machine finished, she frowned slightly.
"Your pressure is still elevated. The doctor will review it shortly.""
"Does that mean I can't leave today?""
"It means we're going to make sure you're safe before we make that decision.""
I nodded.
She checked Lily, adjusted the bassinet, and left.
I was still watching the door when my phone rang.
Adrian.
I considered declining.
Then I remembered the email Vanessa had described and the disputed transfer.
I answered.
"What do you want?""
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Good morning, Emma.""
"Don't.""
"Don't what?""
"Speak to me as though we're having breakfast together.""
He sighed.
"I want to resolve this.""
"You had six months to resolve it.""
"I'm talking about the trust.""
"So am I.""
He paused.
"Your attorney has taken an aggressive position.""
"My attorney is responding to the evidence.""
"Evidence you don't understand.""
I looked at the clock.
5:49 a.m.
"Adrian, I'm going to ask you one question. Did you forge my signature on the transfer agreement?""
Silence.
Then he said, "You really believe I'm stupid enough to answer that over the phone?""
I closed my eyes.
"Thank you.""
"For what?""
"For answering.""
His voice hardened.
"Listen carefully. The company is facing a serious liquidity problem. If the restructuring fails, hundreds of employees could lose their jobs. Thousands of investors could be affected.""
"Then explain the transactions.""
"I can't discuss confidential matters with you while you're represented by counsel.""
"But you can call me before sunrise and ask me to abandon the review?""
"I am trying to prevent unnecessary damage.""
"To whom?""
"To everyone.""
I thought of the eight million dollars.
Of Michael Grant.
Of my father's letter.
"Adrian, if the transactions were legitimate, the review won't hurt you.""
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
"Then help me understand.""
He exhaled sharply.
"Fine. You want the truth? Your father built a complicated structure that was becoming impossible to manage. I made decisions to protect the business.""
"Without my authorization?""
"With the authority I believed I had.""
"Did you prepare the transfer agreement?""
"No.""
"Did you know the signature was disputed?""
He didn't answer.
"Adrian?""
"I knew there were irregularities.""
"Before or after the transfer?""
His voice dropped.
"Emma, you need to understand something. Your father wasn't the saint you remember.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Don't use him to distract me.""
"He hid things from you.""
"Such as?""
"The trust had obligations you never knew about. Debts. Guarantees.
Agreements with investors. Your father was not as careful as you think.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because you were grieving.""
"And now?""
"Now you're risking everything he built because you want revenge.""
I stared at the window.
"You called me to your wedding to humiliate me. You told me I could never give you a family. Then you ran to my hospital room because you were afraid I'd discovered something.""
He said nothing.
"That's not revenge, Adrian. That's a consequence.""
His voice changed.
"Do you know what will happen if the board blocks this restructuring?""
"No.""
"Employees will lose their jobs. Investors will panic. Properties will default. The entire company could collapse.""
"Then perhaps you should have managed it honestly.""
"You're willing to destroy thousands of lives to punish me?""
"I'm willing to let the truth determine what happens to a company I helped build.""
He laughed bitterly.
"You sound just like your father.""
I looked down at Lily.
"Good.""
Then I hung up.
My hands were shaking.
Not because I believed his threats.
Because I knew how effectively he could use other people's suffering to protect himself.
He had always made his own survival sound like a moral obligation.
Now he was asking me to carry the consequences of decisions I hadn't made.
I wouldn't.
At 6:40, Daniel called again.
"We've located Jonathan Mercer.""
I sat upright so quickly that my head spun.
"Where?""
"At a residential address outside Hartford. His attorney confirmed that he is willing to speak with the trustees, provided the interview is conducted through counsel.""
"Is he safe?""
"We don't have reason to believe he's in immediate danger. But the investigators are arranging contact discreetly.""
"Can he attend the board meeting?""
"Not in person. He's willing to provide a sworn statement if his attorney approves the final wording.""
"What does he know?""
Daniel paused.
"According to his preliminary account, he reviewed the transfer agreement before it was submitted to the board.""
I gripped the phone.
"And?""
"He says the version he reviewed did not contain your signature.""
My mouth went dry.
"Then who added it?""
"He's not prepared to identify anyone until he has reviewed the archived records with counsel.""
"Daniel, we're running out of time.""
"I know. The board meeting begins in eighty minutes. The emergency application is still pending.""
I stared at Lily.
"Can Jonathan provide anything before the vote?""
"We're trying.""
I swallowed.
"Tell him my daughter deserves the truth.""
Daniel's voice softened.
"I will.""
At 7:28, the hospital room phone rang.
The nurse answered first.
Then she looked at me.
"There's a woman at reception asking to see you. She says her name is Catherine Mercer.""
Jonathan's wife?
I asked the nurse to bring her in, provided security remained nearby.
A few minutes later, a woman in her early sixties entered the room.
She wore a navy coat and carried a leather handbag. Her face was pale, and she looked as though she'd spent the entire night awake.
"Ms. Bennett?""
"Yes.""
"I'm Catherine Mercer. Jonathan's wife.""
I gestured toward the chair.
"Please sit down.""
She remained standing.
"My husband asked me to bring you something.""
She opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope.
"He has kept this for years. He was afraid that if he sent it to the wrong person, it would disappear.""
I looked at the envelope.
"What is it?""
"Copies of the original transaction records, along with a letter he wrote to your father.""
My heart began to pound.
"Why didn't he give them to the trustees earlier?""
Catherine's eyes filled.
"Because he believed Adrian had people inside the company who could monitor his communications. After Michael died, my husband was terrified.""
She placed the envelope on the table.
"He wanted to come forward. But then he received a message warning him that his family would be ruined if he did.""
"From Adrian?""
"We don't know. The message came through an anonymous account.""
I glanced at Daniel's business card beside the phone.
"Did Jonathan report it?""
"Yes. But he was told there wasn't enough evidence to establish a threat.""
She paused.
"He left the company because he thought that was the safest way to protect us.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside were photocopies of board minutes, accounting records, and a letter addressed to my father.
The first page showed the proposed transfer of my controlling shares.
Beside the authorization was a handwritten note.
Not approved. Beneficiary consent required.
Jonathan's initials appeared at the bottom.
I turned the page.
The next document was an email printed on company letterhead.
It was dated two days before Michael Grant's death.
The sender was Jonathan Mercer.
The recipient was my father.
*Daniel,*
*I have reviewed the transfer documents. The authorization submitted by Adrian does not match the version approved for consideration. Someone has altered the signature page.*
*I cannot establish who made the alteration, but I believe the discrepancy was deliberate.*
*Michael has identified a second set of records that may explain the source of the transfers. He intends to bring them to you tomorrow.*
*I strongly recommend that the board suspend the transaction until the original records are recovered.*
The email ended with a line that made my skin prickle.
*If anything happens to Michael before we meet, do not assume his death resolves the matter.*
I looked up at Catherine.
"Did Jonathan know Michael was afraid?""
"Yes.""
"Did he know why?""
"He believed Michael had found evidence that someone inside Carter Holdings had been diverting money through a network of shell companies.""
"Who?""
"He never told me a name.""
I looked at the documents again.
"Does he know who altered the signature page?""
Catherine hesitated.
"Not conclusively. But he believes the original records will identify who authorized the transfer.""
I called Daniel and read the email to him.
When I finished, he spoke rapidly.
"Send me photographs of every page. Do not write on them or separate the originals from their order. I'll arrange for the documents to be collected and authenticated.""
I did as he asked.
Then he said, "Emma, this could change the board's decision.""
"Could?""
"We still need the trustees' counsel to evaluate the records. But the email directly contradicts the claim that the transfer was approved in the form submitted.""
I looked at the clock.
7:41.
Nineteen minutes before the board meeting.
"What happens now?""
"We present the evidence and request that the board suspend the restructuring.""
"And if Adrian refuses?""
"Then we pursue the available legal remedies.""
I ended the call.
Catherine sat beside me, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
"I'm sorry," she said.
"For what?""
"For waiting so long.""
I looked at her.
"You were protecting your family.""
"So were you.""
I glanced at Lily.
"Yes.""
Catherine rose.
"Jonathan asked me to tell you something. He said your father trusted him to keep the records safe, but he never expected you to have to fight this battle alone.""
My eyes burned.
"Thank him for me.""
"I will.""
After she left, I held Lily close and tried to breathe.
We had the original records.
We had an email proving the transfer had been challenged before it was submitted.
We had a witness willing to testify.
For the first time, Adrian's carefully constructed story had begun to crack.
Then Daniel called again.
I answered immediately.
"What's happening?""
"The board has received the documents. The independent directors have requested a delay.""
I closed my eyes.
"That's good, isn't it?""
"Yes. But Adrian is arguing that the evidence was obtained improperly and that the board has no authority to suspend the restructuring.""
"Can he do that?""
"He can argue it. The board will decide how to proceed based on the governing documents and legal advice.""
I pressed Lily against my shoulder.
"Daniel, what do you need from me?""
"Nothing right now. Just stay available.""
I was about to end the call when he added, "Emma, there's something in the records we haven't discussed.""
"What?""
"The original transfer proposal lists a second beneficiary if the shares are moved out of your name.""
My heart stopped.
"Who?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he read the name.
*Vanessa Reed.*
I stared at the wall.
The woman who had stolen my husband.
The woman who had entered my father's safe-deposit box.
The woman who claimed she knew nothing about the forged transfer.
She hadn't merely been helping Adrian conceal the evidence.
If the document was genuine, she had been positioned to benefit from the transfer itself.
And suddenly, I understood why she had been so desperate to bargain with me.
May you like
She wasn't simply afraid of Adrian.
She was afraid of what would happen when I learned the truth about her role in my father's inheritance.
