Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Baby

“Because if you hear what he says about the baby, you'll never forgive me.””

Vanessa's words hung over the living room like smoke after a fire.

Daniel stood beside the coffee table, holding Maria's phone. His father's bruised face, the shattered photograph, and the recording of his wife's deception were still fresh in his mind. Yet somehow, he sensed that the truth waiting behind the next file would be worse.

He pressed play.

For two seconds, the recording contained nothing but static.

Then Dr. Samuel Hayes spoke.

“Vanessa, we need to discuss the latest results before you go any further with this plan.””

Daniel recognized the doctor's calm, measured voice immediately. It was the same voice that had reassured him when Vanessa experienced severe abdominal pain during her second trimester. The same voice that had told him everything was progressing normally.

Vanessa's recorded voice answered, “You said you could handle it.””

“I said I could explain the results. I never agreed to falsify them.””

Daniel's head snapped toward his wife.

“Falsify what results?””

Vanessa rushed down the stairs.

“Turn it off!””

Daniel raised the phone above her reach.

“Stay where you are.””

“Daniel, please. You have to let me explain.””

“Then explain while we listen.””

On the recording, Dr. Hayes sighed.

“The baby is developing normally. There is no medical reason to classify this pregnancy as high risk based on the findings we have.””

Vanessa's voice grew sharper.

“But if the pregnancy were considered high risk, what would happen?””

“I would recommend additional monitoring. That's all.””

“And if there were concerns about the mother's safety at home?””

“Then I'd document whatever evidence supported those concerns.””

A pause followed.

Then Vanessa asked the question that made Daniel's stomach turn.

“What if I told you Robert had threatened me?””

Dr. Hayes answered immediately.

“I would ask what happened and investigate the circumstances. I would not simply write down an accusation as a medical fact.””

The recording continued.

Vanessa said, “What if there were a witness?””

“What witness?””

“Daniel.””

Dr. Hayes was silent for several seconds.

Finally, he said, “Your husband cannot be a witness to something that never happened.””

Daniel stopped the recording.

He stared at Vanessa.

“Were you planning to tell my doctor that my father threatened you?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No. No, you have to understand the context.””

“What context?””

“I was afraid of Robert!””

“You just heard yourself asking the doctor how to manufacture evidence against him!””

“I was trying to protect myself!””

“From a man who has spent his entire life protecting this family?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Your father never wanted me here. He questioned everything I did. He criticized the clothes I wore, the friends I had, the way I spent money. He made me feel like a stranger in my own home.””

Robert slowly lifted his head.

“I criticized you when you spent twelve thousand dollars on a handbag while Maria was paying for her husband's surgery out of her savings.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“Because you wanted to humiliate me!””

“I offered to reimburse Maria.””

“You made me feel cheap!””

Robert's voice remained quiet.

“Vanessa, you cannot turn every consequence of your own decisions into an attack against you.””

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

Daniel rubbed his face.

“What did the doctor want from you?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Nothing.””

“Then why was he meeting you in Dad's study at eleven at night?””

“He was helping me.””

“With what?””

She said nothing.

Daniel looked at the phone.

“Maria, is there more?””

Maria nodded slowly.

“The file is nearly six minutes long.””

“Play the rest.””

Vanessa grabbed the back of a chair.

“Daniel, if you love me at all, you'll stop this.””

He looked at her.

“I loved you enough to marry you. I loved you enough to trust you with my father's safety. I loved you enough to believe you when you told me he had attacked you.””

His voice broke.

“And you used every bit of that love against me.””

He pressed play.

Dr. Hayes spoke again.

“I need you to understand that I will not change the medical record to support a story that isn't true.””

Vanessa answered, “I'm not asking you to lie about the baby. I'm asking you to help me establish that I'm under stress.””

“Then tell the truth about the stress you're experiencing.””

“You don't understand. If Robert loses control of the trust, Daniel will inherit everything.””

“That is not a medical issue.””

“It becomes a medical issue if the stress harms my pregnancy.””

“Vanessa, the medical findings do not support the claim you're asking me to make.””

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then Dr. Hayes said something that made Daniel's blood run cold.

“And there is another matter. The blood test you requested through the private laboratory has nothing to do with prenatal care. Why are you asking for a paternity analysis?””

Daniel stopped breathing.

He looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

Robert slowly turned his head.

“Paternity analysis?”” he repeated.

Daniel looked at his wife as though he had never seen her before.

“What did he just say?””

Vanessa backed away.

“Daniel, please.””

“Are you questioning whether the baby is mine?””

“No!””

“Then what was that test for?””

She shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks.

“I can explain.””

“Do it.””

“I didn't want you to find out this way.””

Daniel gave a hollow laugh.

“Find out what?””

Vanessa pressed both hands against her stomach.

“I was going to tell you after the baby was born.””

“Tell me what?””

She looked toward the front door, then at Robert, then back at Daniel.

For a moment, she seemed to consider running.

Then her shoulders collapsed.

“I was afraid you would leave me.””

Daniel's voice was barely a whisper.

“Is the baby mine?””

Vanessa began to sob.

“I don't know.””

The words struck him harder than any punch he had ever thrown.

Robert gripped the armrests of his chair.

Maria covered her mouth.

Daniel took one step backward.

“You don't know?””

“The dates were confusing,” Vanessa said quickly.

“I was under a lot of pressure. Marcus and I had been spending time together before you and I had that argument in Chicago.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Marcus?””

She nodded miserably.

“We were close. Too close. It happened before I knew I was pregnant.””

“You slept with my best friend?””

“It was a mistake!””

“How many times?””

“Daniel—”

“How many?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Twice.””

Daniel turned away.

He walked toward the broken photograph of his mother and crouched to pick up the frame. A shard of glass cut his finger, but he barely felt it.

His mother had always told him that trust was the most expensive thing a person could give another human being.

Once broken, it could not be bought back.

He had believed her.

He had simply never imagined that the person who would teach him the lesson again would be the woman carrying his child.

Robert rose unsteadily.

“Son, leave the glass.””

Daniel held the photograph carefully, avoiding the sharp edges.

“I broke this when I hit you.””

“No,” Robert replied.

“You knocked it over. The rest can be repaired.””

Daniel looked up at him.

“Can it?””

Robert's eyes softened.

“The frame can.””

Neither man said anything more.

Then the phone chimed.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

Maria glanced at the screen.

“Mr. Daniel, there's a text.””

Daniel took the phone.

The message contained only one sentence.

*If you want to know who the baby really belongs to, ask Vanessa what happened at the Lakeside Hotel on March 14.*

Beneath it was a photograph.

Vanessa stood beside Marcus in the lobby of a luxury hotel, one hand resting on his chest. He was kissing her forehead.

The date appeared clearly beneath the image.

March 14.

Daniel remembered that date.

It was the night Marcus had called him from Chicago, claiming his car had broken down on the highway and he needed help arranging a tow truck.

Daniel had spent nearly an hour on the phone helping his best friend.

Meanwhile, Marcus had been with his wife.

Daniel slowly raised his eyes.

“Vanessa,” he said, “who sent this?””

She stared at the photograph.

Then she whispered, “I don't know.””

Robert looked at the message again.

“Someone knows more than we've heard.””

Daniel's phone began ringing.

The caller ID displayed Marcus Reed.

Daniel answered without speaking.

For three seconds, all he heard was breathing.

Then Marcus said, “Daniel, whatever you've just seen, don't believe it.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at his injured father.

Finally, he glanced at the shattered photograph in his hand.

“Funny,” he replied.

“That's exactly what I used to tell myself about you.””

Marcus's voice changed.

“Listen to me carefully. Vanessa isn't the only person lying to you.””

The call disconnected.

And before Daniel could call back, a second message appeared.

This one contained a photograph of Robert Whitmore leaving a hospital eighteen years earlier, carrying a newborn baby in his arms.

The message beneath it read:

*Your father knows the truth about the Whitmore heir. Ask him why he kept it secret.*
