Chapter 3: The Voice in the Study

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The recording continued playing, filling the living room with the low hum of the mansion's air-conditioning system.

Then the man's voice spoke again.

“Are you sure Daniel won't interfere?””

Vanessa's recorded voice answered without hesitation.

“Daniel will do whatever I tell him. He's always desperate to prove he's a better man than his father.””

The phone slipped slightly in Daniel's hand.

He tightened his grip.

The voice belonged to Marcus Reed.

Daniel's closest friend since college.

His former business partner.

The best man at his wedding.

The man who had stood beside Daniel's hospital bed when a car accident nearly killed him eight years earlier.

“That's impossible,” Daniel whispered.

Vanessa lunged forward.

“Turn it off!””

Daniel jerked the phone away.

“Don't touch me!””

She stopped.

The words seemed to shock her more than a slap would have.

On the recording, Marcus laughed softly.

“You make it sound easy.””

“It is easy,” Vanessa replied.

“Daniel wants to believe the best in everyone. Especially me.””

Robert sank slowly into the armchair.

His injured jaw throbbed, but he barely noticed.

He had suspected financial misconduct.

He had suspected Vanessa was manipulating his son.

But he had never imagined that the deception extended to Daniel's closest friend.

Marcus spoke again.

“What about the trust?””

Vanessa's answer was clear.

“Once Robert is declared unfit to manage his affairs, Daniel becomes the primary beneficiary under the succession provisions. If Daniel believes his father is unstable or dangerous, he'll support the intervention.””

Daniel's face drained of color.

“Declared unfit?”” he repeated.

Vanessa rushed to explain.

“Daniel, listen to me. That's taken completely out of context.””

He ignored her.

The recording continued.

Marcus asked, “And if Robert refuses?””

Vanessa answered, “Then we give Daniel a reason to believe his father is a threat to me and the baby.””

A pause followed.

Then Marcus asked the question that changed everything.

“What if he hits you?””

Vanessa laughed.

“That's why I need Daniel to see it happen.””

The phone became suddenly heavy in Daniel's hand.

He looked at his wife.

She was no longer crying.

No longer trembling.

Her face had gone rigid, and her eyes kept moving toward the front door.

Robert spoke quietly.

“Daniel, turn it off.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because you need to understand something before you hear the rest.””

“What?””

Robert swallowed painfully.

“I didn't discover the transfers because I suspected Vanessa. I discovered them because Marcus asked me to sign a document authorizing him to restructure part of the family trust.””

Daniel's eyebrows drew together.

“Marcus told me you approved that restructuring.””

“I never did.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because he brought me a document with your signature on it.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What?””

Robert nodded toward the phone.

“I believed it might be a forgery. I asked my attorney to investigate before accusing anyone.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That's a lie.””

Robert didn't look at her.

“Your husband and I have been investigating Marcus for three weeks. We found payments, falsified invoices, and emails sent from an account connected to Westbridge Consulting.””

Daniel's knees felt weak.

He reached for the back of a chair.

“You knew?””

“I suspected. I didn't know how deeply you were involved, and I didn't want to accuse your best friend without evidence.””

Daniel looked at the phone again.

The recording was still playing.

Marcus's voice emerged from the speaker.

“Once the trust is under our control, we can move the assets before anyone notices.””

Vanessa replied, “Not all of them. Daniel needs to keep enough money to maintain appearances.””

“And the baby?””

A brief silence.

Then Vanessa said, “The baby gives me leverage. Nobody questions a pregnant woman who's afraid for her child's safety.””

Daniel shut his eyes.

His wife had turned their unborn child into a weapon.

His father had been struck in his own home.

And the man he trusted more than anyone outside his family had apparently helped plan it all.

The recording ended with a sharp click.

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered, “You don't understand what happened.””

Daniel opened his eyes.

“Explain it.””

She stepped closer.

“Marcus and I were discussing possibilities. We were angry. I never intended for you to hit your father.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You said you needed me to see him as a threat.””

“I was trying to protect myself!””

“From what?””

“From him controlling our lives!””

Robert gave a tired shake of his head.

“I offered you financial independence. I offered to establish a trust for the baby. I offered to help you start your own business. Every time, you wanted something more.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with fresh tears.

“You never accepted me!””

“I accepted you into my home,” Robert replied.

“I accepted you into my family. What I couldn't accept was your belief that loving my son entitled you to everything he would inherit.””

She turned to Daniel.

“Are you really going to believe him over me?””

Daniel looked at his father.

Robert stood with one hand braced against the armchair. The other remained pressed against his jaw.

Daniel remembered the sound of his fist connecting with bone.

He remembered the shattered photograph of his mother.

He remembered his father asking him to think.

And he remembered how quickly he had chosen violence over a single question.

“I believed you before I had any evidence,” Daniel said.

Vanessa's expression softened.

“Because you love me.””

“No,” he replied.

“Because I wanted to believe you.””

Her lips trembled.

“Daniel, please. We have a baby coming.””

“Don't use the baby to silence me.””

She flinched.

For the first time, Daniel saw something unfamiliar in her eyes.

Not fear of being hurt.

Fear of losing control.

Maria quietly moved toward Robert.

“Sir, should I call your doctor?””

Robert shook his head.

“Call my attorney first. Then call the police and report the assault.””

Vanessa spun around.

“You can't do that!””

Robert met her gaze.

“Watch me.””

She rushed toward him, her voice rising.

“If you bring the police into this, you'll destroy your own family!””

Robert's expression hardened.

“You destroyed what was left of this family when you decided my son's love was something you could manipulate.””

Daniel raised a hand.

“Maria, call them.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You would have your pregnant wife arrested?””

“I would have the truth investigated.””

“What about our child?””

Daniel's voice cracked slightly.

“I don't know what happens next. But I know I can't keep pretending this is normal.””

Vanessa backed away.

“You'll regret this.””

Robert looked at her.

“Those words used to frighten me. They don't anymore.””

She turned and hurried toward the staircase.

Daniel started after her, but Robert caught his sleeve.

“Let her go.””

“She could destroy evidence.””

“Then we'll preserve what we have.””

Daniel looked down at his father's hand.

The fingers were trembling.

“Dad,” he whispered, “I'm so sorry.””

Robert released him.

“I know.””

Daniel waited for more.

For anger.

For condemnation.

For the sharp rebuke he felt he deserved.

But his father only lowered himself into the chair and stared at the broken photograph on the floor.

That hurt more than any insult could have.

Maria called the police from the hallway.

Daniel stood beside his father, unsure whether he was permitted to sit.

Finally, Robert gestured toward the empty chair.

“Sit down, son.””

Daniel obeyed.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Robert asked, “Did Marcus tell you he was restructuring the trust?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He said it was a tax strategy. He said you wanted to reduce your exposure before the baby arrived.””

“And did you sign anything?””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“I signed a preliminary authorization last month. Marcus said it only allowed the lawyers to prepare the paperwork.””

Robert looked at him sharply.

“Did you read it?””

Daniel said nothing.

Robert closed his eyes.

“Oh, Daniel.””

“I trusted him.””

“So did I, once.””

Daniel leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

“What do we do now?””

“We find out exactly what he changed.””

Robert reached for the phone on the coffee table, but Daniel handed him Maria's device instead.

The recording list remained open.

Something caught Robert's eye.

A file from the previous evening had appeared beneath the audio recording.

Its thumbnail showed the study door, slightly ajar.

The timestamp read *11:17 P.M.*

Robert frowned.

“Maria, did you know this was here?””

She returned from the hallway.

“No, sir. I only noticed the files from the day the technician tested the microphone.””

Robert tapped the screen.

A still image appeared.

Marcus stood inside the study, holding a thick envelope.

Vanessa stood opposite him.

But they weren't alone.

A third figure was partially visible near the window, his face obscured by the curtain.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Who is that?””

Robert enlarged the image.

The figure wore a dark suit and a distinctive silver watch.

Daniel recognized the watch immediately.

He had bought it for his wife's obstetrician, Dr. Samuel Hayes, after the doctor had personally helped Vanessa through a frightening complication early in her pregnancy.

Daniel's mouth went dry.

“Why would Dr. Hayes be here?””

Vanessa had reached the staircase landing.

She stopped when she heard the name.

Then she slowly turned around.

For the first time, the fear on her face looked real.

“Daniel,” she said, her voice barely audible.

“Don't open that recording.””

Daniel lifted his eyes toward her.

“Why?””

She clutched the railing so tightly that her fingers turned white.

May you like

“Because if you hear what he says about the baby, you'll never forgive me.””

And from the study speaker, a new recording began to play.
