Chapter 2: The Camera Never Lies

“Maria, show me the footage.””

Daniel's voice had changed.

The rage was still there, but something colder had settled beneath it.

Maria glanced at Robert, whose hand remained pressed against his bruised jaw.

“Are you sure, sir?””

Daniel looked at his father.

Robert stood beside the sofa, shoulders slumped, his white hair disheveled. A thin line of blood marked the corner of his mouth.

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“Show me.””

Vanessa immediately stepped between them.

“Daniel, this is ridiculous. She's been working here for years. Of course she'll protect your father.””

Maria stared at her.

“I've worked here for nineteen years, ma'am. I've never lied to you.””

“You're lying now!””

“Then why are you afraid of the recording?””

Vanessa's face tightened.

Daniel held out his hand.

“Maria.””

She gave him the phone.

The screen showed the living room from an elevated angle. The timestamp sat in the upper-right corner, confirming that the recording had been captured less than ten minutes earlier.

Daniel pressed play.

On the screen, Robert sat in his usual armchair, reading a newspaper.

Vanessa entered from the hallway wearing the same pale blue dress she wore now. She paused near the doorway, checked her reflection in a decorative mirror, and adjusted her hair.

Then she looked directly toward the security camera.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Why is she looking at the camera?”” he murmured.

Nobody answered.

The recording continued.

Vanessa walked toward Robert with a pleasant smile.

Robert lowered his newspaper.

“Good afternoon, Vanessa,” he said in the recording.

“Good afternoon, Robert.””

She stopped directly in front of him.

“Would you like a hug?”” she asked.

Robert looked surprised.

“Well, that's unexpected. Is everything all right?””

“Everything is wonderful.””

Vanessa opened her arms.

Robert began to rise from his chair.

But before he could even get fully upright, Vanessa abruptly threw herself backward.

Her body hit the carpet.

She clutched her belly and screamed.

“Help! He's attacking me!””

Robert recoiled in shock.

His hands flew upward.

He never touched her.

Not once.

The footage continued as Daniel watched his wife crawl backward, screaming accusations while his father stood several feet away.

Then Daniel entered the frame.

He watched himself rush toward Vanessa.

He watched himself grab Robert by the collar.

He watched his own fist strike his father's face.

And behind his back, while he was attacking the man who had raised him, Vanessa looked directly toward the camera.

She smiled.

Not a nervous smile.

Not a frightened grimace.

A small, deliberate smile that lasted long enough to make the truth impossible to deny.

Daniel stopped the video.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

“Play that last part again.””

Maria did.

Vanessa's smile appeared on the screen.

Daniel stared at it.

His wife stood beside him, breathing rapidly.

“That's not what it looks like,” she said.

Daniel didn't turn around.

“Then tell me what it looks like.””

“She was a nervous smile! I was in pain, and—”

“You were smiling.””

“I was trying not to cry!””

“You were smiling while I punched my father!””

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Daniel, please. You don't understand. Your father has been cruel to me for months.””

Robert let out a bitter laugh.

“Cruel? I paid for the car you drive. I paid for the medical appointments you requested. I even bought the apartment you wanted to keep as an investment.””

Vanessa rounded on him.

“Because you wanted to control us!””

“I wanted my son to have a stable future.””

“You wanted me to feel indebted to you!””

Daniel raised his hand.

“Enough!””

Everyone fell silent.

He looked at Robert first.

“Dad, I'm sorry.””

The words came out rough, almost painfully small.

Robert's eyes glistened, but he didn't answer.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“Now you tell me why you did this.””

Vanessa pressed both hands over her belly.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of him!””

“The man who never touched you?””

“He was going to!””

“How do you know?””

“Because he hates me!””

Robert shook his head slowly.

“I have never hated you, Vanessa. I've disliked the way you treat people, and I've told you that. But I've never threatened you.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You always thought I wasn't good enough for this family.””

Robert looked at his son.

“Daniel, ask her what happened at breakfast yesterday.””

Daniel frowned.

“What happened?””

Vanessa answered too quickly.

“Nothing.””

Robert continued.

“She demanded that I transfer the family estate into your name before the baby was born. I told her that the estate was held in a trust established by your mother.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“He made it sound like I was asking for something outrageous.””

“You asked for an irrevocable transfer,” Robert said.

“You wanted control over property that isn't yours.””

“I wanted security for my child!””

“And I offered to establish a separate trust for the baby.””

“On your terms!””

Robert exhaled slowly.

“Because it is my money.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“There it is. That's how you always talk to me. Like I'm some gold digger who wandered into your house.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Vanessa, stop changing the subject. You deliberately made it look like Dad attacked you.””

“I didn't know you would hit him!””

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Everyone stared at her.

Daniel slowly lowered his hand.

“What?””

Vanessa blinked rapidly.

“I mean—I didn't know you would react that way.””

“You knew exactly what you were doing,” Maria said quietly.

Vanessa spun toward her.

“Stay out of this!””

“No, ma'am. I won't.””

Maria's voice had grown steadier.

“I watched you enter the room. I watched you check the camera. I watched you throw yourself onto the carpet. And I watched you smile when your husband hit his father.””

Vanessa's face turned red.

“You're fired!””

Maria didn't move.

“You don't own this house, Mrs. Whitmore.””

The statement landed like a slap.

Daniel glanced at Maria.

“What do you mean?””

Maria hesitated.

“Sir, your father asked me to help organize some documents last month. He wanted to review the household accounts before the baby arrived.””

Robert closed his eyes briefly.

He had not wanted to involve Daniel in the financial complications surrounding his marriage. He had hoped the tension would fade.

But now his son had punched him in front of the woman who had engineered the scene.

There was no longer any reason to protect the illusion that everything was fine.

“What did you find?”” Daniel asked.

Maria looked down at the phone.

“Several unusual payments. Transfers from the household account to a company registered in Delaware.””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“This is absurd. Maria has no idea what she's talking about.””

Robert looked at her.

“Then you'll have no trouble explaining the invoices.””

Vanessa's eyes darted toward the staircase.

Daniel noticed.

“What company?””

Robert answered.

“Westbridge Consulting.””

Daniel frowned.

“I've never heard of it.””

“You weren't supposed to,” Robert said.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“It's a legitimate company.””

“Then why did you tell my accountant that it was owned by a childhood friend?”” Robert asked.

She said nothing.

Robert continued, his voice weary rather than angry.

“Because it isn't owned by a childhood friend. The registered agent is a law firm in Wilmington. The beneficial owner is concealed behind a private corporate structure.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Dad, what does that have to do with Vanessa?””

Robert hesitated.

Maria glanced at the phone again.

“There's another recording, sir.””

Vanessa's entire body stiffened.

“What recording?””

Maria's thumb hovered over the screen.

“The camera recorded something in the study three nights ago. The audio was accidentally captured when the system was being tested.””

Daniel turned to his wife.

“What were you doing in my father's study?””

“I wasn't in his study.””

Maria tapped the screen.

A list of video files appeared.

One was labeled *STUDY—10:43 P.M.*

Another showed the living room incident.

But a third file had a different label.

*STUDY—10:51 P.M.—AUDIO ENHANCED.*

Robert stared at it.

“Maria,” he said slowly, “I didn't know the system recorded audio.””

“It usually doesn't, sir. The technician was testing a microphone for the intercom.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

Daniel noticed.

“Why are you afraid of that file?””

“I'm not!””

“Then let's watch it.””

She shook her head.

“No. Absolutely not.””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at him, then at Robert, then at Maria's phone.

For the first time, she seemed to realize that the room no longer belonged to her.

“I want my lawyer,” she whispered.

Robert's expression changed.

Not anger.

Recognition.

He turned toward Daniel.

“Son, I think you need to see it.””

Daniel took the phone from Maria.

He tapped the file.

The screen went black for a moment.

Then a timestamp appeared.

And a voice emerged from the speaker.

Vanessa's voice.

“Once the old man is out of the way, everything will belong to us.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

Because the voice that answered her was not his father's.

It was a man's voice he recognized.

May you like

A man who had been inside their home many times.

A man Vanessa had sworn she barely knew.
