Chapter 6: The Last Gift From a Mother

Lauren's face filled the laptop screen.

Darius sat motionless.

Evelyn held Kayla's hand.

The little girl watched her mother's image with wide eyes.

“Hi, my sweet girl,” Lauren said softly.

Kayla immediately reached toward the screen.

“Mommy.””

Darius looked away for a moment.

He had spent three years trying to remember exactly how Lauren's voice sounded.

Now it was there again.

Warm.

Gentle.

Alive.

On the screen, Lauren smiled.

“If Kayla is watching this one day, I want her to know that Mommy loved every little thing about her. Especially those beautiful curls.””

Kayla touched the uneven hair beneath her scarf.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

Darius pulled her closer.

Lauren continued.

“Darius, I don't know how much time I have before everything I've discovered comes out. I found out that Cynthia has been moving money from Kayla's trust. I also discovered that she has been using Brittany to contact people inside our business.””

Lauren paused.

“She isn't acting alone.””

Darius leaned toward the laptop.

Lauren looked straight into the camera.

“There's someone else. Someone much closer to you than you realize.””

The screen briefly flickered.

Then she continued.

“Cynthia told me the money was being used to pay off a debt. But when I traced the payments, they led to a company registered under a different name.””

A document appeared on the screen.

Darius recognized the company.

Morgan Property Holdings.

His company.

He frowned.

“That account was closed years ago.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“What is it?””

“An old property-management subsidiary.””

Lauren continued.

“The company was being used to move money between accounts. I found forged signatures, fake invoices, and payments authorized by someone with access to Darius's office.””

She stopped.

Her eyes filled.

“I wanted to tell you sooner, Darius. But I was afraid someone would destroy the records before I could protect Kayla.””

Darius's hand tightened around the edge of the desk.

Then Lauren said something he hadn't expected.

“The person who helped me wasn't Evelyn. It was Raymond.””

Darius looked up sharply.

“Raymond?””

On the screen, Lauren nodded.

“He discovered that Cynthia was using his access credentials to move documents. He gave me copies of the records and promised to testify.””

Darius looked at Evelyn.

His mother was equally shocked.

The video continued.

“I know how this sounds. I know Raymond drove me to the police station that evening. But I didn't reach it.””

Darius leaned closer.

Lauren took a shaky breath.

“Someone called my phone while we were driving. Raymond answered it through the car system. I heard a familiar voice.””

A name appeared in small white letters beneath the video.

*GRAHAM WHITMORE.*

Darius went cold.

“Who is Graham?”” Evelyn whispered.

Darius stared at the screen.

“Cynthia's husband.””

Cynthia's husband had died two years before Lauren.

Or so the family had been told.

Lauren continued.

“He was supposed to be dead, Darius. But he isn't. He was using another identity to manage the accounts. Raymond recognized his voice.””

Darius slowly sat back.

His mind raced.

He remembered the newspaper article.

A boating accident.

No body recovered.

A death certificate issued after weeks of investigation.

And a large insurance settlement.

On the screen, Lauren's voice became more urgent.

“Darius, Graham is the person who has been coordinating everything. Cynthia knew. Brittany knew. They told me he had died because they believed I would never look for him.””

The video ended with Lauren looking directly into the camera.

“Please protect Kayla. Don't let anyone tell her that she is difficult, unwanted, or somehow responsible for the things adults do.””

She smiled sadly.

“She is the best thing that ever happened to us.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Kayla was crying quietly.

Darius kissed her head.

“I miss her too, baby.””

The following morning, Raymond Price arrived at the mansion with two investigators.

He looked older than Darius remembered.

His hair was gray at the temples, and he walked with a slight limp.

When Darius entered the library, Raymond immediately stood.

“Mr. Morgan.””

Darius studied him.

“You drove my wife that night.””

“Yes, sir.””

“You told me she had an accident.””

Raymond lowered his eyes.

“I told the police what I knew.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

Raymond swallowed.

“I drove her to the police station. We were three miles away when a black SUV came up behind us.””

Darius's face tightened.

“Who was driving?””

“I couldn't see clearly. It was raining.””

“Then what?””

“The SUV hit the rear of the car. We spun out. Mrs. Morgan's side struck the guardrail.””

Darius closed his eyes.

“Was she alive?””

Raymond hesitated.

“Yes.””

Darius felt his knees weaken.

“She was alive?””

“When I got to her, she was conscious. She kept asking for her daughter.””

Darius gripped the back of a chair.

“What happened?””

Raymond's voice cracked.

“I called emergency services. Then the SUV came back.””

One of the investigators leaned forward.

“Tell us what happened next.””

Raymond swallowed.

“A man got out. He told me that if I wanted my family to stay safe, I needed to leave.””

Darius stared at him.

“You left her?””

Raymond shook his head.

“I tried to fight him. He hit me, and I lost consciousness. When I woke up, the car was burning.””

Silence filled the library.

Darius stared at the man who had worked for his family for nearly a decade.

“You let me believe she died instantly.””

“I'm sorry, sir.””

“Three years.””

Raymond lowered his head.

“I was afraid.””

Darius's voice broke.

“She was my wife.””

“I know.””

“She was the mother of my child.””

“I know.””

Raymond pulled a small USB drive from his jacket.

“I kept the original footage from the dashboard camera. I thought one day I'd have the courage to turn it over.””

The investigator took it.

“Is the recording complete?””

“Most of it.””

“Does it identify the other vehicle?””

Raymond nodded.

“There's a partial license plate. And there's a voice recording from the moment the man approached the car.””

Darius stared at him.

“Who is it?””

Raymond looked directly at him.

“Graham Whitmore.””

The investigation moved quickly.

The original dashboard recording, financial records, security footage, and Lauren's letters gave investigators a clearer picture of what had happened.

Graham Whitmore was alive.

He had staged his disappearance after a financial investigation threatened to expose his involvement in several fraudulent business transactions.

Cynthia had helped him move money through companies connected to the Morgan estate.

Brittany had assisted with forged documents and had maintained contact with him.

When Lauren discovered the scheme, she began gathering evidence.

On the night she died, Graham intercepted her before she reached the police station.

The accident had not been an accident.

And the people Darius had welcomed into his home had known far more than they had admitted.

Three days later, Graham was arrested while attempting to leave the country.

Cynthia and Brittany were also taken into custody after investigators uncovered their roles in the financial fraud and the subsequent attempts to conceal evidence.

The truth didn't erase what had happened.

But for the first time in three years, Darius knew his wife hadn't died because of some random twist of fate.

She had been trying to protect their daughter.

And she had never stopped.

Two weeks later, Darius sat in Kayla's bedroom.

A small bowl of warm water rested on the vanity, beside a bottle of gentle scalp moisturizer.

Kayla was sitting on her little stool, wearing a blue sweater.

Her hair had begun to grow evenly, though it was still very short.

She studied herself in the mirror.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, baby?””

“Will my curls come back?””

Darius smiled.

“Every single one.””

“Even the big ones?””

“Especially the big ones.””

She touched the back of her head.

“Brittany said short hair looked better on me.””

Darius set the lotion down.

“What do you think?””

Kayla considered the question.

“I like my curls.””

“Then that's all that matters.””

He gently rubbed a little moisturizer into her scalp.

Kayla watched him in the mirror.

“Daddy?””

“Hmm?””

“Are you going to use those loud clippers on Brittany?””

Darius stopped.

Then he smiled sadly.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Why not?””

“Because I don't need to hurt someone to show them that hurting you was wrong.””

Kayla nodded.

“Grandma said that too.””

“Grandma is a very smart woman.””

“She said you were very angry.””

“I was.””

“Were you going to cut Brittany's hair?””

Darius took a breath.

“I thought about it.””

Kayla looked at him.

“Why didn't you?””

He put the lotion aside and knelt beside her.

“Because I want you to learn something important. When someone hurts you, you don't have to become like them to stand up for yourself.””

Kayla considered that.

Then she leaned forward and hugged him.

“Okay, Daddy.””

He held her close.

“I love you.””

“I love you more.””

“Impossible.””

She giggled.

It was the first time he had heard that sound since the day Brittany cut her hair.

And it felt like sunshine entering a dark room.

The following Sunday, the family gathered in the garden.

Evelyn had arranged a small picnic beneath the old oak tree.

There were strawberry sandwiches, chocolate cupcakes, lemonade, and a plate of Kayla's favorite cookies.

Darius had also brought something.

A little wooden box.

Kayla opened it.

Inside lay the pink ribbon he had rescued from the dressing-room floor.

Beside it was a framed photograph of Lauren.

Kayla picked up the ribbon.

“Daddy, you kept it.””

“Of course.””

“Can Grandma put it in my hair when it grows?””

Evelyn smiled.

“Absolutely.””

Kayla looked at the photograph.

“Can Mommy see me?””

Darius sat beside her.

“I think she'd be very happy to see you.””

Kayla touched the photograph.

“I wish she was here.””

“So do I, baby.””

Evelyn came over and sat on the other side.

“Your mother would tell you something right now.””

“What?””

“That you are beautiful exactly as you are.””

Kayla smiled.

Then she looked at the ribbon again.

“Can we take a picture?””

Darius took out his phone.

“Of course.””

Kayla sat between her father and grandmother.

Evelyn put an arm around her.

Darius raised the phone.

“Ready?””

Kayla looked directly at the camera.

“Wait!””

He lowered it.

“What is it?””

She smiled.

“I want to smile really big.””

Darius laughed softly.

“Then give me your biggest smile.””

The camera clicked.

For the first time in weeks, the photograph showed a little girl who wasn't frightened.

Six months later, Kayla's curls had returned.

They were shorter than before, but thick and springy, framing her face in soft dark rings.

One morning, Darius found her standing in front of the bathroom mirror, carefully arranging a pink ribbon in her hair.

He stopped in the doorway.

“Wow.””

Kayla turned.

“Do you like it?””

Darius smiled.

“I love it.””

She spun around.

“Grandma said I look like Mommy.””

He walked over and kissed her forehead.

“You do.””

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Can I show you something?””

She reached into a little wooden drawer and pulled out a folded photograph.

It was the family picture Lauren had taken shortly before her death.

Lauren was sitting on the garden steps, holding Kayla in her lap.

Darius was standing behind them, with one hand resting on Lauren's shoulder.

All three were smiling.

Kayla pointed toward her mother's hair.

“Look. Mommy had curls too.””

Darius nodded.

“She did.””

“Were hers bigger?””

He laughed.

“A little.””

Kayla examined the picture.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, princess?””

“Do you think Mommy would like my hair now?””

Darius crouched in front of her.

He gently arranged one curl that had fallen across her forehead.

“I think she'd love it.””

Kayla smiled.

Then she hugged him tightly.

And Darius finally understood something Lauren had known all along.

The curls were never the most precious thing about Kayla.

Her courage was.

Her laughter was.

Her enormous little heart was.

And no one would ever be allowed to make her feel ashamed of any part of herself again.

That afternoon, Darius received a final update from his attorney.

Brittany had been denied access to Kayla, the engagement was officially dissolved, and the evidence against her and Cynthia had been submitted to prosecutors.

Graham was facing serious charges connected to Lauren's death.

The stolen money had been traced, and the process of restoring Kayla's trust was underway.

Darius read the report, closed the folder, and placed it in his desk.

Then he walked upstairs.

Kayla was sitting on the carpet with Evelyn, brushing a doll's long synthetic curls.

“Daddy!”” she called.

“What's happening?””

“I'm doing her hair.””

Darius crouched beside them.

“Are you being gentle?””

Kayla nodded seriously.

“Very gentle. She said she doesn't want it cut.””

He looked at Evelyn.

His mother smiled.

Darius laughed and kissed his daughter's forehead.

“Then I think she found the right person.””

Kayla held up the doll.

“Look, Daddy. She has beautiful hair.””

Darius looked at his little girl.

“Yes, she does.””

And as the late-afternoon sunlight poured through the mansion windows, Kayla began humming the tune from her mother's old music box.

The house that had once been filled with fear was finally filled with laughter again.

The woman who had tried to erase Lauren's memory had lost her place in their lives.

The man who had threatened to take her hair had never needed to touch a single strand.

And the little girl who had once reached desperately for her falling curls now wore her natural hair proudly.

*A new family should never require a child to lose the pieces of the old one.*
