Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Smile

The clippers were still buzzing.

Brittany's back pressed against the vanity, and one hand gripped the marble edge so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

“Turn that thing off,” she whispered.

Darius didn't move.

“You heard me.””

“Darius, you're frightening me.””

He stared at her.

“Good. Maybe now you understand what Kayla felt.””

Brittany's eyes filled with angry tears.

“Are you seriously comparing me to a monster because I gave your daughter a haircut?””

“A haircut?””

He glanced toward the floor.

“You left her crying in a room full of her own hair.””

“She was being impossible!””

“She is six!””

“And I'm supposed to just let her control this family?””

Darius lowered the clippers slightly.

“Control this family?””

Brittany pushed herself away from the vanity.

“You have no idea what I've been dealing with.””

“Then explain it.””

“For months, I've tried to make this house feel like a home for all of us. I've organized the wedding, handled the staff, rearranged the guest rooms, and spent thousands making sure everything is perfect. Meanwhile, Kayla refuses to listen to me.””

Darius switched off the clippers.

The sudden silence made her blink.

“She doesn't listen to you because you haven't earned her trust.””

Brittany gave a disbelieving laugh.

“That's ridiculous.””

“Is it?””

“She calls your mother whenever I tell her no. She refuses to wear what I pick. She keeps those ugly ribbons in her bedroom. And every time I try to establish some authority, Evelyn steps in.””

“Then perhaps you should have spoken to me.””

“I have spoken to you!””

“When?””

“Every time you're home!””

Darius shook his head.

“You told me she was adjusting.””

“She is adjusting.””

“To what? Losing her mother? Or having you order her around?””

Brittany's face tightened.

“Lauren has been gone for three years. You can't expect the whole world to stop because Kayla misses her.””

Darius went still.

“Don't say her mother's name like that.””

“I'm simply being realistic.””

“No. You're being cruel.””

Brittany crossed her arms.

“I'm going to be her mother one day.””

Darius looked at her for several seconds.

“Not like this.””

He placed the clippers on the vanity.

Then he walked toward the door.

“Darius, where are you going?””

“To my daughter.””

“What about us?””

He stopped without turning around.

“Right now, there is no us.””

Brittany's face flushed.

“You can't throw away three years because of one mistake.””

He looked back at her.

“One mistake?””

He pointed at the floor.

“You didn't accidentally trip and cut her hair. You held her still. You ignored her when she begged you to stop. You kept going while she cried.””

Brittany opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Darius walked away.

In the nursery, Evelyn sat on the edge of Kayla's bed.

The little girl had changed out of her pink dress and was wearing a soft yellow pajama set. Her head was wrapped in one of the cotton scarves Evelyn had found in a drawer.

She kept touching the fabric.

“Grandma?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Will my hair grow back?””

Evelyn's throat tightened.

“Yes, baby. It will grow.””

“Will it look like Mommy's pictures again?””

Evelyn gently tucked the blanket beneath her chin.

“It might take some time, but your hair will grow.””

Kayla stared at the ceiling.

“Will Brittany cut it again?””

“No.””

“Promise?””

Evelyn leaned closer.

“I promise nobody gets to do that to you without your permission. Not Brittany. Not anyone.””

Kayla turned her face toward the window.

“Mommy used to say my curls were magic.””

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“She did.””

“She said every curl was a little spring.””

“She was right.””

Kayla reached for the pink ribbon Evelyn had rescued from the dressing room.

“Can you put this somewhere safe?””

Evelyn took it carefully.

“Of course.””

“Not in the trash.””

“Never.””

Kayla's eyes filled again.

“I don't want Brittany to be mad at Daddy.””

Evelyn brushed her cheek.

“Why would you say that?””

“Because she said Daddy needs her. She said he works too much, and I make things difficult.””

Evelyn felt her stomach tighten.

“What else did she say?””

Kayla hesitated.

“She said if I didn't listen, Daddy might send me to live somewhere else.””

Evelyn stared at her granddaughter.

“Who said that?””

“Brittany.””

“When?””

“Last night.””

Evelyn took a slow breath.

“Sweetheart, your daddy would never send you away because you cried or because you didn't want your hair cut.””

Kayla nodded, but her little hands kept twisting the blanket.

Evelyn kissed her forehead.

“I'm going to talk to him.””

“Don't let Brittany come in.””

“I won't.””

A knock sounded at the bedroom door.

Evelyn stood.

“Who is it?””

“It's me,” Darius answered.

She opened the door.

He stepped inside and looked at his daughter.

“Hey, princess.””

Kayla watched him carefully.

“Are you still mad?””

Darius crossed the room and sat beside her.

“I'm angry about what happened. But I'm not angry with you.””

“Brittany said I make things difficult.””

His jaw tightened.

“Brittany was wrong.””

“She said you need a woman to help you.””

Darius glanced toward his mother.

Evelyn didn't speak. She simply watched him.

He took Kayla's little hand.

“I need you. That's what I need.””

Kayla studied his face.

“More than the wedding?””

Darius's expression softened.

“More than anything.””

She leaned against him.

For a moment, the room was quiet except for the soft hum of the air conditioner.

Then Kayla whispered, “Can you stay until I fall asleep?””

Darius pulled the blanket over her.

“I'm not going anywhere.””

After Kayla finally drifted off, Darius followed Evelyn into the hallway.

His mother closed the bedroom door quietly.

“What did she tell you?”” he asked.

Evelyn looked at him.

“She said Brittany threatened to send her away.””

Darius's face hardened.

“When?””

“Last night, apparently.””

He ran a hand over his mouth.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she's six, Darius. She believes the adults who are supposed to protect her.””

He looked through the bedroom window.

Kayla was curled on her side, one hand tucked beneath her cheek.

“I should have seen it.””

Evelyn's expression softened.

“You've been busy. But being busy doesn't mean you get to stop paying attention.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

He turned toward her.

His mother continued.

“Lauren trusted you with that little girl. She trusted you to make sure Kayla knew she was loved, even after she was gone.””

Darius swallowed.

“I never forgot that.””

“Then don't forget it now.””

He looked down at his hands.

“I thought Brittany was good with her.””

“She was good at looking good with her.””

The words settled between them.

Darius stared at his mother.

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Have you ever noticed how Brittany acts when you're in the room compared to when you're not?””

He frowned.

“What are you saying?””

“I'm saying I've seen things.””

“Like what?””

“She's thrown away Kayla's drawings. She's refused to let her call me when she's upset. She once took away the photograph of Lauren from Kayla's bedside table.””

Darius's eyes widened.

“She did what?””

“I found the picture in the bottom of a storage box in the laundry room.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried. You said Brittany was helping Kayla move forward.””

Darius looked away.

He remembered that conversation.

Brittany had explained that Kayla needed to stop clinging to the past. He had agreed, believing his fiancée was trying to make the transition easier.

Now the memory made him feel sick.

“There's more,” Evelyn said.

He turned back.

“Tell me.””

“Three days ago, I walked into the kitchen and found Brittany cutting the sleeves off Kayla's favorite cardigan. She said the cuffs looked childish.””

“She destroyed her clothes too?””

“She told the housekeeper to throw it away.””

Darius rubbed his forehead.

“Jesus.””

Evelyn reached into the pocket of her cardigan.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I found this in the dressing room.””

Darius opened it.

It was a printed email.

The message was addressed to a wedding stylist. It contained a photograph of Kayla in her usual curls.

Below it, Brittany had written:

Please make sure the little girl looks polished for the ceremony. I don't want those wild curls distracting from the overall look. If necessary, we can have them cut shorter before the family portraits.

Darius read it twice.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“She planned this.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I don't know whether she intended to shave her head, but she had certainly been thinking about cutting her hair.””

He looked toward the bedroom.

“Who else knows?””

“I don't know.””

Darius folded the email and slipped it into his pocket.

“I want every camera recording from today.””

Evelyn stared at him.

“Darius, there's something else.””

“What?””

“The dressing-room camera.””

He frowned.

“There's no camera in there.””

“There wasn't supposed to be. But the housekeeper told me Brittany had a small security camera installed two weeks ago.””

Darius went still.

“Why?””

“She said she wanted to monitor the jewelry.””

“Did she have permission?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

He pulled out his phone.

“I'm calling security.””

Downstairs, Brittany stood in the kitchen.

A glass of sparkling water sat untouched beside her. Her phone rested on the counter, and she was scrolling through wedding photographs as if nothing had happened.

When Darius entered, she looked up.

“I'm glad you've calmed down.””

He didn't answer.

She set the phone down.

“Are you going to apologize?””

Darius looked at her.

“For what?””

“For threatening me with those clippers.””

His face remained blank.

“You're worried about your hair?””

“I'm worried about the way you treated me.””

He walked to the island and placed the printed email on the counter.

“What is this?””

Brittany glanced down.

Her expression barely changed.

“An email.””

“You planned to cut Kayla's hair.””

“I planned to have it styled.””

“You wrote that her curls were distracting.””

“They were.””

“Why?””

“Because I want our family photographs to look beautiful.””

Darius stared at her.

“Our family?””

“Yes. Our family.””

He leaned forward.

“Kayla is not a decoration.””

Brittany sighed.

“You always do this. You make me the villain whenever I try to correct her behavior.””

“Correcting behavior doesn't require clippers.””

“She needs discipline.””

“She needs someone who loves her.””

Brittany's lips pressed together.

“And I suppose your mother is going to tell you I'm incapable of that.””

Darius said nothing.

She stepped around the counter.

“You know what the problem is? You still treat Kayla like she's made of glass. You think nobody can ever tell her no because her mother died.””

Darius's eyes narrowed.

“Stop using Lauren as an excuse.””

“I'm not.””

“You are.””

Brittany picked up her glass and took a sip.

Then she set it down with a sharp click.

“I've spent three years trying to become part of this family. Do you know what it feels like to walk into a room and have everyone look at you like you're replacing a ghost?””

Darius studied her.

“Did you cut Kayla's hair because you wanted to make her look different?””

Brittany's eyes shifted.

For the first time, she didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, “I wanted her to stop looking like Lauren.””

The kitchen went silent.

Darius stared at her.

“What?””

Brittany's chin lifted.

“Every time I look at that child, I see her mother. The pictures, the ribbons, the curls. It's like Lauren is still standing in every room of this house.””

Darius's voice dropped.

“So you decided to take something away from a six-year-old to make yourself feel better?””

Brittany said nothing.

He took out his phone.

“I'm ending the engagement.””

Her glass slipped from her fingers.

It hit the counter and tipped, spilling water across the marble.

“You can't be serious.””

“I am.””

“You don't get to do that over one argument!””

“It's not one argument.””

“Darius, we have a wedding in eleven days!””

“Not anymore.””

Brittany stared at him.

Then her expression hardened.

“You'll regret this.””

He turned toward the hallway.

“No. I regret not noticing what you were doing sooner.””

As he walked away, his phone vibrated.

A message appeared from the head of household security.

*Mr. Morgan, we found the camera. But there's something you need to see before you decide what to do with Ms. Whitmore.*

Attached was a video file.

Darius opened it.

And the first frame showed Brittany entering Kayla's bedroom the night before the haircut.

With a pair of scissors in her hand.
