Chapter 3: The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See

Darius watched the video twice.

The first time, he couldn't believe what he was seeing.

The second time, he noticed the detail that made his stomach turn.

At 9:42 p.m. the previous evening, Brittany entered Kayla's bedroom carrying a small pair of scissors and a plastic bag.

Kayla was asleep.

Brittany stood beside the bed for several seconds, looking down at the little girl.

Then she touched one of Kayla's curls.

She pulled it gently.

Kayla shifted beneath the blanket.

Brittany stepped back.

The camera captured her glancing toward the door before she leaned down again.

She lifted a lock of hair and held the scissors against it.

Then she stopped.

A message appeared on her phone.

Brittany read it, smiled, and returned the scissors to her bag.

Before leaving, she took the framed photograph of Lauren from Kayla's nightstand.

Darius paused the recording.

His hands were shaking.

He had seen Brittany remove the photograph from the house before. She had told him Kayla had knocked it over and the frame was being repaired.

He had believed her.

Now he watched the woman he planned to marry walk out of his daughter's bedroom with the picture tucked under her arm.

“Who sent you this?”” he asked when the security manager called.

“Mr. Morgan, the housekeeper noticed the camera two weeks ago. She didn't know what to do, so she told me privately. We pulled the recordings after your request.””

“Why didn't anyone tell me earlier?””

There was a pause.

“Ms. Whitmore told staff it was approved by you.””

Darius closed his eyes.

“Send me every recording from the last two weeks. Preserve the original files.””

“Yes, sir.””

“And nobody deletes anything.””

“Understood.””

The call ended.

Darius stood in the empty hallway, staring at the frozen image of Brittany holding Lauren's photograph.

Behind him, a small voice spoke.

“Daddy?””

He turned.

Kayla stood in the bedroom doorway.

She was still wearing her yellow pajamas, and the cotton scarf had slipped backward, exposing the uneven hair beneath it.

Darius immediately locked his phone.

“Hey, sweetheart. What are you doing out of bed?””

“I couldn't sleep.””

He crouched.

“Come here.””

She walked toward him.

He opened his arms, and she climbed into them.

“Are you going to marry Brittany?”” she asked.

Darius held her close.

“No, baby.””

Kayla's shoulders relaxed.

“Really?””

“Really.””

She rested her head against his chest.

After a moment, she whispered, “Can Mommy come to the wedding?””

Darius felt his heart tighten.

He kissed the top of her scarf.

“We're not having the wedding.””

Kayla lifted her head.

“Because of me?””

“No.””

“Because I cried?””

“No, sweetheart.””

“Because I didn't listen?””

Darius gently held her face between his hands.

“Look at me.””

She did.

“Nothing that happened is your fault. Not one little bit.””

Kayla's eyes filled.

“Brittany said you would be lonely without her.””

Darius swallowed.

“I might be lonely sometimes. But being lonely is not worse than letting someone hurt you.””

Kayla thought about that.

Then she pointed toward his phone.

“Is that the video Grandma was talking about?””

Darius's expression changed.

“How did you know about the video?””

“She said someone was looking at the cameras.””

He glanced toward the stairs.

“Did Brittany tell you anything?””

Kayla hesitated.

“She said I wasn't supposed to tell you about the scissors.””

Darius felt his blood turn cold.

“What scissors, baby?””

Kayla looked down.

“The little ones she brought into my room.””

He kept his voice gentle.

“Can you tell me what happened?””

Kayla rubbed her thumb against his shirt.

“She touched my hair while I was sleeping. Then I woke up, and she told me she was taking a little piece for a surprise.””

Darius's jaw clenched.

“What surprise?””

“I don't know.””

“Did she cut it?””

Kayla nodded.

“She cut one curl. Then she put it in a bag.””

Darius went still.

“Why?””

Kayla looked up at him.

“She said she needed it for something.””

He closed his eyes.

Another detail.

Another lie.

“It's okay,” he whispered.

“You don't have to tell me anything else right now.””

“Will you keep the video?””

“Yes.””

“Will you keep my curl?””

Darius looked at her.

“What curl?””

“The one she took.””

He held her tighter.

“I'll try to find it.””

Kayla nodded, then rested her head against him again.

Darius carried her back to bed.

He stayed beside her until she fell asleep.

Only then did he return to the security room.

The mansion's security room sat behind the private office, accessible only through a biometric lock.

Two monitors covered one wall. Another displayed the driveway, front gate, and rear gardens.

The head of security, Marcus Reed, stood beside the desk.

He had worked for the Morgan family for twelve years. He had watched Darius grow from an impatient young businessman into a father who carried his daughter through the halls when she fell asleep in the car.

He knew what Kayla meant to him.

“Sir,” Marcus said, “we recovered more than the bedroom recording.””

Darius pulled out a chair.

“Show me.””

Marcus opened a folder.

The first clip showed Brittany entering the upstairs linen room.

She removed several of Kayla's dresses from a storage box and placed them in a black trash bag.

The second showed her handing the bag to a housekeeper.

The third showed her standing in the hallway, telling the woman to make sure Kayla never saw the clothes again.

Darius leaned forward.

“Play the audio.””

Marcus did.

Brittany's voice came through the speakers.

“I'm tired of these childish things filling every room. She needs to understand that this house is changing.””

The housekeeper answered quietly.

“Those are Kayla's favorite dresses, ma'am.””

“Then she can get new ones.””

“Mr. Morgan bought the blue one for her birthday.””

Brittany laughed.

“Then perhaps he'll buy something more appropriate next time.””

Darius rubbed his forehead.

Marcus clicked to another recording.

This one showed Brittany in the family room, speaking on the phone while Kayla colored at the small table nearby.

“I'm not going to live in a museum dedicated to his dead wife,” Brittany said.

She paused.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Once we're married, things will be different. Evelyn won't be here every day, and Kayla will have to learn that I'm in charge.””

Darius stared at the monitor.

Marcus hesitated.

“There's something else, sir.””

“What?””

“We found another recording from the dressing room.””

Darius looked up.

“You said there was a camera in there?””

“Yes. It was installed behind the decorative mirror. We recovered the footage from today's incident.””

Marcus opened the file.

The video showed Brittany leading Kayla into the dressing room.

Kayla was wearing the pink dress.

Brittany placed a small stool in front of the mirror and pointed for the girl to sit.

The audio was clear.

“Today we're going to fix your hair,” Brittany said.

Kayla shook her head.

“No, thank you.””

Brittany smiled.

“It's not a question.””

“I want Grandma to do it.””

“Grandma isn't going to be doing your hair anymore.””

Kayla's hands went to her curls.

“Daddy likes them.””

Brittany leaned down.

“Your daddy likes having a peaceful house.””

The recording continued.

Kayla started crying.

Brittany took out the scissors.

And then the clippers.

Darius watched until the moment his mother entered.

He pushed his chair back.

“I've seen enough.””

Marcus paused the video.

“There's one more thing.””

Darius turned.

“What now?””

Marcus opened another folder.

“Ms. Whitmore's personal belongings were collected from the dressing room after you left. We found a small sealed envelope in her makeup case. It has Kayla's name on it.””

Darius looked at the envelope.

“Open it.””

Marcus removed a folded piece of paper.

Inside was a handwritten list.

At the top, Brittany had written:

*Things that need to change after the wedding.*

Below it were several entries.

Remove Lauren's photographs.

Change Kayla's bedroom.

Replace Evelyn's room with nursery storage.

No more unsupervised visits with Evelyn.

Haircut before family portraits.

Darius stared at the last line.

There was another entry beneath it.

Discuss boarding school arrangements before Christmas.

He read it again.

Then a third time.

“Boarding school?””

Marcus nodded.

“That's what it says.””

Darius picked up the paper.

“Did she discuss this with anyone?””

“Not that we know of.””

“Find out.””

“Yes, sir.””

Darius walked toward the door.

Marcus spoke again.

“Mr. Morgan?””

Darius stopped.

“I wouldn't confront her alone.””

He turned.

“Why?””

“Because she knows the camera system exists now. And because she has already started making calls.””

Darius's brow furrowed.

“What calls?””

Marcus showed him a visitor log.

A name appeared beside an entry from that afternoon.

*Cynthia Whitmore.*

Brittany's mother.

“She arrived twenty minutes after you went upstairs,” Marcus explained.

“She left through the rear entrance.””

Darius looked at the timestamp.

“Why didn't I see her?””

“She asked the driver to take her around the east driveway.””

Darius stared at the log.

“Did she go inside?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Ms. Whitmore's private suite.””

Brittany was sitting on the edge of her bed when her mother entered the room.

Cynthia Whitmore was a tall woman in her late fifties, dressed in a navy suit with a gold brooch at her collar. She carried herself with the same polished confidence as her daughter.

But unlike Brittany, Cynthia rarely raised her voice.

She didn't need to.

“Where is he?”” she asked.

Brittany looked up from her phone.

“Probably with that little girl.””

Cynthia placed her handbag on the chair.

“Did you do it?””

Brittany's eyes narrowed.

“Do what?””

“Don't play games.””

Brittany looked away.

Cynthia sighed.

“You were supposed to wait until after the wedding.””

“She wouldn't stop crying.””

“And that was your solution?””

“I didn't think he would react like this.””

Cynthia stared at her daughter.

“You have been in that house for three years. You knew exactly how he would react if anyone hurt Kayla.””

Brittany got up.

“He always chooses her.””

“Because she's his daughter.””

“And what about me?””

Cynthia took a slow breath.

“Brittany, listen carefully. We cannot afford another mistake.””

The younger woman laughed bitterly.

“Another mistake?””

Cynthia didn't answer.

Brittany stepped closer.

“You told me this would be simple. You said once I became his wife, I could finally have some control.””

“I said you needed to be patient.””

“Well, I'm tired of waiting.””

Cynthia glanced toward the dressing room.

“Does he know about the account?””

Brittany froze.

“What account?””

Cynthia's expression hardened.

“Don't lie to me. The one you opened last spring.””

Brittany swallowed.

“He doesn't know.””

“Good.””

“Why are you asking?””

“Because if Darius decides to end this engagement, we need to know what he has access to.””

Brittany folded her arms.

“He won't end it.””

Cynthia looked at her.

“He already did.””

Brittany went pale.

“He said that because he was angry.””

“He said it in front of the staff.””

“Then he'll change his mind.””

Cynthia shook her head.

“You don't understand men like Darius. When he makes a decision involving his daughter, there is no negotiation.””

Brittany's phone vibrated.

She checked it.

A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.

*I know what happened in Kayla's bedroom last night. We need to talk before Darius sees everything.*

Brittany's face drained of color.

Cynthia watched her.

“What is it?””

Brittany quickly locked the phone.

“Nothing.””

“Show me.””

“No.””

Cynthia stepped closer.

“Brittany.””

The younger woman held the phone against her chest.

Then, finally, she whispered, “Someone knows about the curl.””

Cynthia's expression changed.

“What curl?””

Brittany looked toward the door.

“The one I took from Kayla.””

At that same moment, Darius stood outside the private suite.

He had heard enough to know he was dealing with something far bigger than a broken engagement.

He knocked once.

Then he opened the door.

Brittany turned sharply.

Cynthia's mouth fell open.

Darius held up the recovered handwritten list.

“Before either of you says another word,” he said, “I want to know why you were planning to send my daughter away.””

Brittany stared at the paper.

Then at her mother.

Cynthia went completely still.

Darius placed the list on the table.

“And I want to know what happened to the curl you took from her bedroom.””

Brittany's face lost every trace of color.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Cynthia reached into her handbag.

She pulled out a small black envelope and set it on the table.

“Darius,” she said carefully, “there is something you need to understand about Lauren's death.””

Darius looked at the envelope.

“What does Lauren have to do with this?””

Cynthia slid it toward him.

“Everything.””

Inside was a photograph.

Lauren stood in front of the Morgan mansion, holding baby Kayla.

On the back, in Lauren's handwriting, were seven words:

*If anything happens to me, protect my daughter.*

Darius looked up.

Cynthia's face had gone pale.

May you like

And Brittany, standing beside her mother, whispered the one thing that made his blood run cold.

“She wasn't supposed to find out.””
