Chapter 9: The Christmas Star
Marcus looked at his daughter.
“The Christmas star?””
Lily nodded.
“The silver one.””
He glanced toward the living room.
The silver star from last Christmas had disappeared.
Vanessa had claimed it was broken.
But Lily remembered something else.
“She took it down when you were away,” Lily said.
“She said it was old and ugly. Then Derek came and put it inside the wooden room.””
Marcus knelt beside her bed.
“Are you sure?””
Lily nodded.
“I saw him carrying it.””
“Did you see him open it?””
“No. But I heard something inside.””
Marcus gently touched her cheek.
“Thank you for telling me.””
He turned toward Ethan, who had just entered the doorway.
“We need to find that star.””
Ethan nodded.
“And we need to do it without disturbing the evidence.””
Marcus looked at the little girl.
“Can you stay here with the security officer while we look?””
Lily grabbed his hand.
“Don't go without me.””
Marcus paused.
“What if I carry you?””
She nodded.
He lifted her into his arms.
Her little head rested against his shoulder as he carried her downstairs.
The living room looked strangely empty without the Christmas decorations.
The twelve-foot tree still stood beside the windows, but several ornaments had been moved, and the silver garland hung unevenly.
Marcus searched the storage room.
Boxes of decorations were stacked along the wall.
He opened one.
Inside were gold baubles and several strings of lights.
Another contained artificial wreaths.
A third was filled with ribbons.
Then Lily pointed toward a large cardboard box behind the cabinet.
“Daddy. That one.””
Marcus moved it forward.
The lid was taped shut.
He looked at Ethan.
“Document everything.””
The attorney nodded.
Marcus carefully removed the tape.
Inside was a collection of old Christmas decorations.
And at the bottom lay the silver star.
It was larger than he remembered.
A delicate five-pointed shape, made of polished silver with tiny engraved patterns along the edges.
Lily reached out.
“That's it.””
Marcus lifted the star.
It was unusually heavy.
He examined the back and found a small circular opening beneath the central ornament.
A tiny keyhole.
He turned toward Lily.
“Is this what you heard?””
She nodded.
“Something moved inside.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Marcus, don't force it.””
Marcus examined the star.
Then he remembered Emma's wedding photograph.
The silver pendant.
The tiny key.
He took out the note.
Please make sure Lily has the little silver key.
The key had been part of Emma's necklace.
He looked at Lily.
“Did you ever see the necklace after Derek took it?””
She nodded.
“He wore it once.””
“When?””
“When Mrs. Bennett told him to put the pretty things away.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Where did he put it?””
Lily pointed toward the wooden storage room.
“Inside the little black box.””
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“We saw that box in the office.””
Marcus remembered the filing cabinet.
He handed the star to the security officer.
“Keep this safe. Don't open it.””
Then he returned to the office with Ethan.
The black box was still inside the locked room.
Marcus opened the filing cabinet and found it beneath a stack of papers.
He carefully lifted the lid.
Inside lay several items.
A pair of cufflinks.
An old watch.
A gold bracelet.
And a small velvet pouch.
Marcus opened it.
A silver chain fell into his hand.
The pendant was gone.
He examined the chain.
There was a small broken clasp.
“Where's the pendant?”” he asked.
Ethan looked around.
“Could it have been moved?””
Marcus remembered the photograph of Derek speaking on his phone.
If Marcus finds out where the original went, we're finished.
He looked toward the filing cabinet.
There was a false bottom beneath the velvet lining.
He pressed the small metal hinge.
The compartment opened.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
A tiny USB drive.
And a small silver key.
Marcus picked up the key.
He knew immediately it belonged to the Christmas star.
He handed the USB drive to Ethan.
“What's on this?””
“Possibly the original estate records.””
Marcus looked at the folded paper.
It was another note from Emma.
This one was longer.
Marcus,
If you're reading this, then something has happened that I hoped we would never have to face.
I found irregularities in the old family trust records. I don't believe they are accidental. Someone has been attempting to move assets using documents that should never have been accessible.
I have asked Ethan to preserve the original records, but I don't want anyone knowing where I've hidden them until Lily is old enough to understand.
The silver key opens the star. Inside it is the original copy of the estate inventory and the evidence I collected.
Please don't let anyone tell Lily that she doesn't belong.
She is the most important part of our family.
And Marcus, please forgive me for not telling you sooner.
Love, Emma.
Marcus read the letter twice.
His eyes filled.
He pressed the paper against his chest.
For a moment, he couldn't hear anything except the faint hum of the air conditioning.
Ethan lowered his head.
“She was trying to protect you both.””
Marcus nodded.
“She knew something was wrong.””
“Yes.””
“And I didn't listen.””
Ethan placed a hand on his shoulder.
“You were building a future for your family. You didn't know someone was trying to take it apart.””
Marcus looked down at the silver key.
“Let's open the star.””
Back in the living room, Lily watched as Marcus placed the star on the coffee table.
She sat beside him, still wrapped in his coat.
The security officer stood nearby.
Ethan placed the USB drive and Emma's note beside the star.
Marcus inserted the key.
It turned smoothly.
A tiny click sounded.
The back panel opened.
Inside was a small velvet-lined compartment.
There were two envelopes.
One carried Marcus's name.
The other carried Lily's.
Marcus picked up the first envelope.
His hands trembled slightly.
Then Lily reached for the second.
“That's mine?””
“Yes, sweetheart.””
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a photograph of Emma holding Lily as a baby.
A small note was attached.
My darling Lily,
You may not remember all our days together, but I hope you will always remember that you were loved more than anything in this world.
Never allow anyone to make you feel unwanted.
Never believe that being kind means you must accept being hurt.
Your daddy loves you. I know he will always protect you.
And when you see the Christmas star, remember that our family is not measured by the people who stand beside us.
It's measured by the love we give one another.
I love you forever.
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
“Mommy wrote this?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes, princess.””
She touched the photograph.
“I miss her.””
Marcus pulled her close.
“I miss her too.””
They sat together quietly.
Then Marcus opened his own envelope.
Inside was a legal document, an original trust inventory, and a sealed letter addressed to Ethan.
The inventory listed several assets that had never appeared in the documents Vanessa and Derek had been preparing.
There were long-term investments, shares, and a separate family fund created by Emma's grandfather.
At the bottom was a note.
The estate's controlling interest is protected by a separate trust. Any attempt to transfer or alter the beneficial ownership without the original records and the required independent verification is invalid.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“This is the part they were trying to get.””
Ethan nodded.
“It's substantial.””
“How substantial?””
The attorney examined the inventory.
“Substantial enough that the transfers we've found so far may only be a small part of the attempted scheme.””
Marcus looked toward the office.
“So Derek wasn't stealing a few accounts.””
“No. He appears to have been trying to gain control of the family's larger holdings.””
Marcus glanced at Lily.
“And they used my daughter to do it.””
Ethan's expression hardened.
“That's what the evidence suggests.””
A sudden noise came from the hallway.
The security officer turned.
“Mr. Bennett?””
Marcus stood.
“What happened?””
“Mrs. Bennett has attempted to leave the penthouse.””
Marcus looked toward the entrance.
Vanessa appeared a moment later, carrying a small suitcase.
She stopped when she saw the star on the table.
Her expression changed.
“Where did you find that?””
Marcus didn't answer.
Vanessa looked at the open compartment.
“You opened it?””
Marcus held up Emma's letter.
“Did you know what was inside?””
She stared at the paper.
Then her eyes moved toward Lily.
“Give me that.””
Marcus stepped in front of his daughter.
“No.””
“Marcus, you don't understand what you're holding.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
“You're a lawyer. You know those papers are meaningless without the original certificates.””
Ethan studied her.
“Actually, the original certificates are inside the star.””
Vanessa's face drained of color.
She turned toward Marcus.
“Listen to me. Derek made me do things.””
Marcus remained silent.
“He told me the trust was practically worthless unless the documents were reorganized. He said we could use the money to create a better future.””
“For whom?””
“For us!””
Marcus stared at her.
“And Lily?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She was supposed to be taken care of.””
“By whom?””
“By you, obviously.””
Marcus looked at the stained dress folded over the nearby chair.
“You expected me to sign papers sending my daughter away while you took control of her inheritance?””
Vanessa began crying.
“I never wanted to hurt her.””
“Then why did you?””
She had no answer.
The elevator chimed.
Derek stepped into the penthouse with a security officer beside him.
His expression changed when he saw the silver star on the table.
“No.””
Marcus turned.
“Recognize it?””
Derek looked toward Vanessa.
“You opened it?””
Vanessa stepped away from him.
“You said there was nothing inside.””
Derek's face tightened.
“I told you to keep it hidden.””
Marcus stared at him.
“So you knew Emma had left evidence.””
Derek said nothing.
Ethan picked up the USB drive.
“We have the original estate records. We also have the unedited surveillance footage.””
Derek swallowed.
Marcus looked at him.
“Is there anything you'd like to explain?””
Derek glanced toward the elevator.
“I want my lawyer.””
“That's a good idea.””
Derek turned toward the security officer.
But before he could leave, Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Don't you dare pretend this was all my idea.””
Derek spun around.
“You agreed to it!””
“You told me Marcus was going to lose everything!””
“You wanted the money!””
“You said Lily was the only obstacle!””
Derek's face darkened.
“And you agreed to send her away!””
The room fell silent.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa began shaking her head.
“No. I didn't mean it like that.””
Derek laughed bitterly.
“You signed the papers. You made the phone calls. You told me to scare the girl into cooperating.””
Vanessa slapped him.
The sound echoed through the living room.
Derek grabbed his cheek.
“Don't touch me!””
Marcus raised his hand toward security.
“That's enough.””
The officer separated them.
Derek looked toward Marcus.
“You think you've won?””
Marcus didn't answer.
Derek leaned forward.
“You haven't seen the worst of it.””
Ethan stepped between them.
“Mr. Shaw, stop speaking.””
Derek ignored him.
“Ask Vanessa what she did with the money before I ever got involved.””
Marcus turned.
“What money?””
Vanessa's face went white.
Derek smiled grimly.
“There's another account. One she never told me about.””
Marcus looked at Ethan.
The attorney's expression became serious.
“Do you have proof?””
Derek nodded.
“Ask her where the money went.””
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
“SHUT UP!””
Marcus stared at her.
“Where did it go?””
She backed away.
“I don't have it anymore.””
“How much?””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Marcus…”
“How much?””
She whispered a figure.
Ethan quickly calculated it.
Then his expression changed.
“Marcus, that's not a small amount.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Where is it?””
She began to cry harder.
“I gave it to someone.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the windows.
Then she said something that made the entire room go silent.
“Your father.””
Marcus froze.
“My father is dead.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
“Then what are you talking about?””
She looked at him with terrified eyes.
“The money wasn't transferred to your father personally. It went into a company bearing his name. A company Derek said had been closed years ago.””
Ethan immediately opened his laptop.
“What's the company called?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Bennett Family Holdings.””
Ethan stopped typing.
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
The attorney slowly turned the screen around.
A list of company directors appeared.
One name was highlighted.
*CLAIRE DONOVAN.*
Beneath it was another name.
*EMMA BENNETT — ORIGINAL BENEFICIAL OWNER.*
Marcus stared.
Emma had never told him she controlled that company.
Then Ethan opened the latest filing.
The company hadn't been closed.
It had been active for years.
And according to the newest record, it had recently appointed a new managing director.
Marcus read the name.
His face turned pale.
It was someone he had never expected to see again.
Someone who had attended Emma's funeral.
Someone who had stood beside him and promised to help protect Lily.
Marcus looked up.
“Ethan,” he whispered.
“Why is my father's old lawyer listed as the new director?””
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then he answered:
“Because somebody has been running your family's estate behind your back.””
At that exact moment, Marcus's phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
A woman's voice came through.
“Marcus Bennett?””
“Who is this?””
“My name is Claire Donovan.””
Marcus looked at Ethan.
Claire continued.
“I need you to listen carefully. Derek and Vanessa aren't the only people involved.””
Marcus's grip tightened around the phone.
“Who else?””
There was a pause.
Then Claire whispered:
“The person who ordered the original documents destroyed is someone your daughter has been calling Uncle Paul.””
Marcus went completely still.
Paul.
His father's former attorney.
The man who had carried Lily into church at Emma's funeral.
The man who had kissed her forehead and promised he would always look after her.
Claire's voice trembled.
“And Marcus, there's something else.””
“What?””
“The original estate file contains a letter from Emma. She wrote it three days before she died.””
Marcus couldn't breathe.
“What does it say?””
Claire whispered:
“It explains why she was afraid of leaving Lily alone with Vanessa.””
Then the call disconnected.
Marcus slowly lowered his phone.
Across the room, Vanessa was crying.
Derek was staring at the floor.
And upstairs, his little girl was sleeping beneath the glow-in-the-dark stars her mother had placed on the ceiling.
Marcus looked at the Christmas star on the table.
He had come home expecting to surprise his daughter.
May you like
Instead, he had uncovered a betrayal that had begun long before the first glass of wine hit the marble floor.
And now he knew the final piece of the truth was still missing.
