Chapter 5: The Truth on the Recording

Marcus stopped the recording.

He stood in the middle of the small office, holding the device as if it had suddenly become heavier than anything he had ever carried.

Vanessa rushed toward him.

“Give me that!””

He raised his hand.

“Don't come any closer.””

“You have no right to listen to private recordings!””

“Private?””

“It's a family matter!””

Marcus turned the recorder toward her.

“You recorded my daughter begging to see me.””

“I was trying to correct her behavior!””

“You told her to say she didn't want me.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“You don't know what she was like when you were gone!””

Marcus didn't answer.

He pressed play again.

Vanessa's recorded voice filled the room.

“Come on, Lily. Say it properly.””

A pause.

Then Lily's small voice.

“I don't want Daddy to leave me.””

Vanessa sighed impatiently.

“That's not what I told you to say.””

“But I miss him.””

“Lily, look at me. Your father has other things that matter more than you. Don't you understand that?””

A tiny sob followed.

“Please stop.””

“Then say the words.””

Another pause.

Finally, Lily whispered, “Daddy doesn't love me.””

Marcus shut his eyes.

The recording continued.

“Louder,” Vanessa said.

“Daddy doesn't love me.””

“Good girl.””

Marcus stopped the device.

His hand was shaking.

Vanessa watched him.

For a brief moment, her expression looked almost triumphant.

“You see?”” she said.

“She was constantly upset. I was trying to help her accept reality.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“What reality?””

“That you weren't coming back.””

“I never told her that.””

“You were gone for months!””

“I was working.””

“You left us!””

Marcus took one step toward her.

“I left you with the responsibility of caring for my daughter. I did not leave you permission to destroy her confidence.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

Then she tried another approach.

“Marcus, please. I was under pressure. Derek was helping me organize things. You know how complicated the household has become.””

“Derek organized this?””

“He helped with the paperwork.””

“And the recordings?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I don't remember.””

Marcus put the device in his pocket.

“We're done.””

“No, we're not!””

He walked toward the door.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Marcus, you can't just throw away our marriage over a few mistakes!””

He pulled free.

“Don't touch me.””

Her face twisted.

“You're acting as if I hurt her on purpose.””

Marcus looked back into the room.

The photographs.

The false reports.

The stolen money.

The forged authorization.

The recording.

“How many more mistakes do you need?””

His attorney arrived twenty minutes later.

Ethan Cole was in his early fifties, with silver hair, a charcoal overcoat, and a habit of carrying a leather briefcase everywhere.

He entered the penthouse, took one look at Marcus's expression, and immediately understood that the evening was far worse than the telephone call had suggested.

“Where's Lily?”” Ethan asked.

“Upstairs. She's safe.””

“Have you called a doctor?””

“A pediatrician is on the way.””

Ethan nodded.

“Good. What have you found?””

Marcus pointed toward the office.

“Everything is in there. Don't remove anything until we've documented it.””

Ethan walked inside.

He examined the photographs, the documents, and the bank statements.

Then he picked up the guardianship authorization.

“Is this your signature?””

“No.””

“Did you authorize anyone to prepare this?””

“No.””

Ethan studied the page.

“This document is not valid without the required formalities, but the attempted impersonation is serious. We need to preserve it exactly as it is.””

He looked through the bank statements.

“And these transfers?””

“They came from the account connected to Lily's trust.””

Ethan's expression darkened.

“Who has signing authority?””

“I do. Vanessa has limited administrative access under the household arrangements. She doesn't have authority to transfer trust assets.””

Ethan flipped to the next page.

“These payments went to Shaw Advisory Group.””

“Derek's company.””

Ethan looked up.

“Derek Shaw?””

Marcus nodded.

“Apparently he's been advising my wife.””

Ethan gave a humorless laugh.

“That's one way to describe it.””

He took photographs of the documents and made a careful inventory.

Then he opened the filing cabinet.

Inside were several folders marked with Lily's name.

One contained copies of school reports.

Another held medical forms.

The last folder was labeled:

*PLACEMENT — JANUARY.*

Ethan opened it.

A boarding school brochure was clipped to the front.

Beneath it was an application for residential enrollment.

The proposed start date was January 5.

Marcus stared at the page.

“She was planning to send Lily away?””

Vanessa, standing in the doorway, immediately interrupted.

“It was only a possibility.””

Marcus turned.

“You told me this was a storage room.””

“I needed somewhere quiet to work.””

“You prepared a residential placement application without telling me?””

“She needs structure!””

“She needs her father.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You think you can give her everything? You disappear whenever your company needs you. You come home with presents and expect her to adore you.””

Marcus looked at Lily's photograph on the desk.

Then he turned back.

“I don't expect her to adore me. I expect her to be safe.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

Ethan closed the folder.

“Mrs. Bennett, I'd strongly recommend that you stop making statements until you've obtained independent legal advice.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“Stay out of my marriage.””

Ethan remained calm.

“This stopped being a marital disagreement when financial documents bearing Mr. Bennett's name appeared in a room containing unauthorized trust transfers.””

Vanessa said nothing.

A soft knock came from the staircase.

Marcus turned.

Lily stood at the top step wearing her blue sweater and holding her stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy?””

He immediately walked toward her.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

“Can I come downstairs?””

“Of course.””

He lifted her and carried her into the living room.

Ethan gave her a gentle smile.

“Hello, Lily. I'm Mr. Cole. I've known your father for a long time.””

Lily nodded shyly.

Marcus sat beside her.

“Would you like some hot chocolate?””

She nodded.

“Marshmallows?””

A small smile appeared.

“Three?””

Marcus smiled back.

“Three.””

He asked the security manager to arrange it while he sat with her.

Lily studied the room.

“Is Mrs. Bennett angry?””

Marcus brushed her hair away from her face.

“She might be.””

“Because of me?””

“No.””

“But she's always angry when I do something wrong.””

“Sweetheart, you didn't do anything wrong tonight.””

Lily looked down at the rabbit.

“Daddy, can I tell you something?””

“Anything.””

“Mrs. Bennett said you were going to send me away.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“Did she?””

“She said you were tired of having a little girl. She said once you came back, you would sign the papers and I would go somewhere else.””

He took her hand.

“I would never send you away because I'm tired of you.””

“She said I was expensive.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You're not a bill, Lily. You're my daughter.””

“She said you would be happier without me.””

Marcus pulled her into his arms.

“Listen carefully. Nothing makes me happier than being your daddy.””

Lily began to cry.

He held her against his chest until her breathing slowed.

Then she looked up.

“Daddy, there was another thing.””

“What is it?””

“When I was in the room, Mrs. Bennett made me practice something.””

Marcus went still.

“What did you have to practice?””

Lily whispered, “What to say if someone asked why I was scared of you.””

Marcus looked toward Ethan.

The attorney slowly put down his briefcase.

“What were you supposed to say?”” Marcus asked.

Lily stared at her rabbit.

“That you shouted at me. That you grabbed my arm. That I was afraid to stay with you.””

Marcus gently touched her shoulder.

“Did I ever do those things?””

She shook her head.

“Why would she make you say them?””

“I don't know.””

Lily wiped her face.

“She said if I didn't remember the words, she'd make me watch the video again.””

Marcus felt a cold wave pass through him.

Ethan stood.

“Marcus, I think we need to preserve every recording before anything else happens.””

Marcus nodded.

Then Lily reached into the pocket of her sweater.

She pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

“I found this near the printer.””

Marcus opened it.

It was a handwritten note.

The writing was Vanessa's.

Tomorrow, tell Lily that the recording will be deleted if she cooperates. Do not let her speak to Marcus alone.

Marcus read it once.

Then again.

He handed it to Ethan.

The attorney's face became very serious.

“That's important,” he said.

Before Marcus could answer, the elevator chimed.

The security manager's voice came through the hallway.

“Mr. Bennett? We have a situation.””

Marcus stood.

“What happened?””

The manager appeared in the doorway.

“Mr. Shaw has returned.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely pale.

“Why?”” Marcus asked.

The manager hesitated.

“He says he left something inside the penthouse.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“What?””

The manager looked down at his phone.

“A black folder, sir.””

Ethan glanced toward the locked office.

May you like

Then toward the elevator.

“Don't let him leave.””
