Chapter 7: What Happened on November Seventeenth
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“Tell me exactly what happened on November seventeenth.””
Vanessa looked toward the elevator.
“I already told you. Ask Derek.””
“I'm asking you.””
Her fingers trembled against the marble countertop.
“Something happened, Marcus. But it wasn't what you think.””
“What do I think?””
“You think I hurt Lily.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Did you?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
He waited.
Finally, she whispered, “Derek was supposed to handle it.””
Marcus's expression changed.
“Handle what?””
Before she could answer, Ethan appeared in the kitchen doorway.
“Marcus, I think you need to see something.””
He held the black tablet the security officer had recovered.
“We've accessed the original camera system. The device in the office was connected to a local recording server. There's an archived file from November seventeenth.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“That's private surveillance footage.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Then I suggest you stop trying to prevent us from preserving it.””
Marcus took the tablet.
“What does it show?””
“We haven't reviewed the complete recording yet.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Let's watch it.””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Why?””
“Because it will be misunderstood.””
“Then explain it before we press play.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You're making a mistake.””
Marcus looked toward the security officer.
“Bring Derek in.””
Derek entered the penthouse several minutes later.
He had removed his jacket and rolled up his sleeves. His confidence had disappeared, replaced by the nervous expression of a man who knew he had lost control of a situation.
“What now?”” he asked.
Marcus stood beside the kitchen island.
“November seventeenth.””
Derek stopped walking.
“What about it?””
Marcus held up the tablet.
“What happened to Lily that night?””
Derek glanced at Vanessa.
She stared at the floor.
“Nothing happened,” he replied.
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Interesting. Because Vanessa just told me something was supposed to be handled.””
Derek's jaw tightened.
“She doesn't know what she's talking about.””
Vanessa suddenly looked up.
“Don't you dare put this on me.””
Derek turned toward her.
“Can you keep your mouth shut for five minutes?””
Marcus moved between them.
“Don't speak to her. Speak to me.””
Derek gave a humorless laugh.
“This is ridiculous. You disappear for months, come home in a Santa costume, and suddenly think you're some kind of detective.””
Marcus placed the tablet on the counter.
“Watch.””
He pressed the screen.
A loading symbol appeared.
Then the footage began.
The camera showed the office behind the wooden door.
The timestamp read:
*NOVEMBER 17 — 6:42 P.M.*
Vanessa entered the room holding a glass of water.
She placed it on the desk.
Then she opened a drawer and removed several documents.
A few seconds later, Derek walked inside.
He carried a brown leather folder.
“Did you find it?”” Vanessa asked.
Derek nodded.
“Everything is here. The bank authorization, the trust papers, and the updated guardianship request.””
Vanessa looked through the pages.
“What about Marcus's signature?””
“I'm working on it.””
“You said it would be ready.””
“It will be ready when I say it's ready.””
Vanessa placed the documents down.
“And Lily?””
Derek shrugged.
“She's upstairs.””
“She saw you earlier.””
Derek turned toward her.
“What?””
“She came downstairs looking for her necklace.””
Derek rubbed his forehead.
“Did she see anything?””
“I don't know. I told her to go back upstairs.””
Marcus's fingers tightened around the tablet.
Then another figure appeared in the footage.
Lily.
She stood in the doorway holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her small voice came through the speaker.
“Excuse me?””
Vanessa turned.
“What are you doing here?””
Lily looked at Derek.
“That's Mommy's necklace.””
Derek quickly placed something into the desk drawer.
Lily stepped forward.
“I saw it.””
Vanessa moved toward her.
“Go upstairs.””
“But that's Mommy's.””
“Lily, I said go upstairs.””
The girl shook her head.
“Daddy gave it to me. He said I could keep it.””
Derek walked around the desk.
“Little girl, you need to learn not to touch things that don't belong to you.””
Lily backed away.
“But it belongs to me.””
Derek grabbed her wrist.
She cried out.
“Let go!””
He pulled her toward the desk.
“Stop making a scene.””
Lily tried to free herself, lost her balance, and struck her knee against the corner of the cabinet.
Her rabbit fell to the floor.
Vanessa watched.
Then she said something that made Marcus's blood run cold.
“Derek, be careful. You'll leave a mark.””
Derek looked at her.
“She won't tell anyone.””
Lily was crying now.
“I want my daddy.””
Vanessa bent down and picked up the rabbit.
“Your father isn't here.””
“I want Daddy!””
“Then you should have behaved.””
The footage showed Derek opening the office door.
He pushed Lily into the small adjoining storage compartment.
Then he closed it.
The timestamp continued.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Open that door,” he said.
The footage showed Vanessa turning toward Derek.
“Let her out in a few minutes.””
Derek shook his head.
“She's heard too much.””
“She doesn't understand any of this.””
“She understands enough to recognize her mother's necklace.””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Then make sure she forgets.””
The screen went dark.
Marcus didn't move.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, he looked at Derek.
“You locked my daughter in that room?””
Derek shrugged.
“She was being difficult.””
Marcus took one step forward.
Ethan immediately moved beside him.
“Marcus.””
He stopped.
Derek gave a defensive laugh.
“Look, she was fine. It was a few minutes.””
Marcus pointed at the black screen.
“The recording ran for three hours.””
Derek's smile disappeared.
Vanessa started crying.
“I told him to let her out.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“After three hours?””
“I didn't know he had locked her in there that long.””
“You were in the room.””
“I had to leave!””
Marcus looked at the timestamp again.
He saw the moment Vanessa had walked out.
He saw Derek return to the desk.
And he saw the door remain closed.
For three hours.
His daughter had been crying behind that door while two adults discussed how to take control of her father's money.
“There's more,” Ethan said quietly.
He tapped the tablet.
A second recording appeared.
This one had no camera footage, only audio.
Marcus pressed play.
Vanessa's voice came through.
“Lily, you're going to tell Daddy that you fell because you were running.””
A small voice answered.
“But Derek pushed me.””
“That's not what happened.””
“My knee hurts.””
“Then you should have listened.””
A pause followed.
Then Derek spoke.
“Tell her what happens if she doesn't cooperate.””
Vanessa sighed.
“Lily, if you tell your father lies, you'll have to go away to that school we talked about.””
“I don't want to go.””
“Then you'll say what I tell you.””
“I want Daddy.””
Vanessa's voice turned cold.
“You cannot keep using your father to get everything you want.””
The recording ended.
Marcus slowly lowered the tablet.
He remembered the mark on Lily's knee.
He remembered her fear when he had asked what happened.
And he remembered how she had apologized for making Vanessa angry.
Now he understood.
The little girl had been taught that telling the truth was the thing that would get her punished.
“Is there anything else?”” he asked.
Ethan nodded.
“The camera system has one final archived file. It was saved separately under a different name.””
“What name?””
Ethan turned the tablet toward him.
*ORIGINAL — DO NOT DELETE.*
Vanessa suddenly rushed forward.
“No! Don't open that!””
The security officer immediately stepped between her and the tablet.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“Play it.””
The screen displayed a different timestamp.
November seventeenth.
11:56 p.m.
The footage showed Derek standing alone in the office.
He was speaking on his phone.
His voice was clear.
“It's done. The girl won't say anything.””
A pause.
Then he laughed.
“No, Vanessa doesn't know everything. She thinks this is about getting the trust.””
He lowered his voice.
“Once Marcus is declared unfit, nobody will question the transfer.””
Marcus looked at Ethan.
The attorney's expression had become grim.
The recording continued.
Derek said something that neither Marcus nor Vanessa had expected to hear.
“Besides, Lily is the only person who knows what really happened to Emma's necklace.””
Marcus froze.
Emma.
His late wife.
Derek continued.
“And if Marcus finds out where the original went, we're finished.””
The recording ended.
For several seconds, Marcus couldn't speak.
Then he turned slowly toward Vanessa.
“Where is Emma's original necklace?””
Vanessa's tears stopped.
And for the first time that night, she looked genuinely frightened.
Upstairs, Lily was sitting on the bed when Marcus entered.
She immediately looked at his face.
“Daddy?””
He sat beside her.
“Hey, princess.””
“Are you angry?””
He shook his head.
“No, sweetheart.””
“Did I do something wrong in the little room?””
Marcus took her hands.
“No. You were brave.””
She studied him.
“Can I tell you something about Mommy's necklace?””
Marcus felt his heart tighten.
“Of course.””
Lily looked toward the stuffed rabbit in her lap.
“Mommy had two necklaces.””
Marcus frowned.
“Two?””
“One was the little gold heart. The other was a silver one. She said the silver one was very important.””
He remembered Emma wearing a small silver pendant during their first Christmas together.
It had disappeared shortly before she died.
“Where did you see it?””
“In Derek's hand.””
Marcus stared at her.
“When?””
“That night in the office.””
“Did you see where he put it?””
Lily nodded slowly.
“He took it out of Mommy's jewelry box. He said it was worth a lot of money.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
His wife hadn't simply lost the necklace.
Someone had taken it.
And his daughter had witnessed it.
He kissed Lily's forehead.
“Thank you for telling me.””
Then she whispered something else.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Derek said he was going to sell something else, too.””
“What?””
May you like
Lily looked directly into his eyes.
“He said he was going to sell our house.””
