Chapter 6: The Mother Who Never Stopped Waiting

The drive to Connecticut took nearly three hours.

Taylor spent most of it in the back seat of the SUV, holding Ethan's hand while the doctor remained on the phone with Monica.

The contractions had eased, but the obstetrician insisted that Taylor come directly to the hospital for monitoring.

Taylor agreed on one condition.

They would find Evelyn Vale first.

“I don't care how long it takes,” she told Monica.

“If that woman has spent twenty-nine years believing her children are dead, she deserves to know the truth.””

Monica nodded.

“She will.””

Ethan sat beside Taylor, staring out the window.

He had barely spoken since they left the boathouse.

Finally, Taylor turned toward him.

“Do you remember your childhood?””

He looked at her.

“Of course.””

“What do you remember about your mother?””

Ethan frowned.

“Which one?””

Taylor hadn't expected the question.

He rubbed his hands together.

“Denise was strict. Everything had to be perfect. My clothes, my grades, my friends.

She hated surprises. She hated anyone asking about my birth.””

“Did you ever ask?””

“Once. I was about six. A boy at school said I looked nothing like my father, and I came home crying.””

Taylor listened.

“Denise told me I had inherited Richard's stubbornness and that I should never let anyone make me doubt who I was.””

“Did you believe her?””

“I wanted to.””

He looked down.

“After Dad died, I stopped asking questions. I thought if I made Mom happy, maybe the house would feel normal again.””

Taylor reached for his hand.

“Ethan, I can't tell you how to feel about what you've learned. But you don't have to keep protecting her.””

He nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

He turned toward her.

“Yes. And I'm going to prove it.””

The SUV left the highway and entered a quiet town lined with old brick buildings, maple trees, and small houses with white fences.

Monica checked the address on her phone.

“Turn left at the next intersection.””

Daniel followed the directions until they reached a modest medical residence surrounded by a low stone wall.

A nurse stood near the entrance.

When Monica approached, the nurse looked at her with immediate recognition.

“You're Monica Vale?””

“Yes.””

The nurse glanced at Ethan.

“And you must be Ethan.””

He nodded.

The nurse's expression softened.

“Your mother has been waiting for you.””

Ethan froze.

“My mother?””

“Evelyn,” the nurse said gently.

“She asked us to contact you as soon as we found out you were coming.””

Monica's hand tightened around her briefcase.

“Is she well enough to speak with us?””

“She has good days and bad days. Today has been a good day.””

Taylor stepped forward.

“Did someone come here before us?””

The nurse's expression changed.

“Yes. A woman arrived yesterday claiming to be a relative. She spoke privately with Evelyn for nearly an hour.””

“Was it Denise Whitmore?”” Monica asked.

The nurse nodded.

“She left Evelyn very upset. Afterward, Evelyn refused to eat and asked us to lock her room.””

Ethan's face darkened.

“What did Denise tell her?””

“We don't know. Evelyn wouldn't repeat it.””

Monica took a slow breath.

“Can we see her?””

The nurse led them through a quiet corridor.

The building smelled of disinfectant and freshly brewed coffee. Sunlight fell across the polished floor through tall windows.

At the end of the hallway, the nurse stopped outside a small room.

“Please be gentle,” she said.

“Evelyn has waited a long time for answers.””

She opened the door.

An elderly-looking woman sat beside the window, although she was only in her late fifties. Her silver hair was tied loosely at the back of her head, and a knitted blanket covered her knees.

A photograph rested in her lap.

It showed a younger woman holding two newborn babies.

Evelyn looked up.

Her eyes moved from Monica to Ethan.

The photograph slipped from her fingers.

For several seconds, she didn't speak.

Then she rose slowly, clutching the windowsill.

“Monica?””

Monica stopped breathing.

Evelyn looked at Ethan.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

“No,” she whispered.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Are you Evelyn Vale?””

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“My name is Ethan Whitmore.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No. No, they told me—”

She stopped.

Her gaze fixed on his face.

Then she whispered, “You have Richard's eyes.””

Ethan's face crumpled.

He took another step.

“Did you give birth to me?””

Evelyn covered her mouth with both hands.

“I was told you died.””

The room fell silent.

Monica crossed the room and embraced her.

Evelyn clung to her daughter, sobbing.

“I thought I had lost you both. I thought I had done something wrong. I thought God was punishing me because I couldn't protect my babies.””

Monica closed her eyes.

“You didn't do anything wrong, Mom.””

Evelyn pulled back and touched Monica's face.

“I used to dream about you. I dreamed you were grown, and you were standing in front of me, but I couldn't reach you.””

She turned toward Ethan.

“And you.””

Ethan knelt beside her chair.

“I don't remember you.””

Evelyn stroked his hair with trembling fingers.

“That's all right, sweetheart. You were only a few hours old.””

He began to cry.

Taylor stood near the door, tears streaming down her face.

For the first time, the terrible story was no longer about money, power, or a wealthy family protecting its reputation.

It was about a mother who had spent nearly three decades grieving children who had never died.

And two adults who had grown up believing they were strangers.

Evelyn looked at Monica.

“Did Denise send you?””

“No,” Monica replied.

“We came because we found the records.””

Evelyn's face tightened.

“Then she knows.””

“Yes.””

The older woman gripped Monica's hand.

“You must be careful. Denise told me she would destroy anyone who tried to take Ethan away from her.””

Ethan lowered his head.

“She already has.””

Evelyn touched his cheek.

“No, sweetheart. She took your past. She doesn't get to take your future.””

Taylor stepped closer.

“Mrs. Vale, may I ask you something?””

Evelyn turned toward her.

“Of course.””

“Do you remember the night you gave birth?””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“I remember everything.””

She closed her eyes.

“I remember the nurse telling me I had a beautiful boy and a beautiful girl. I remember holding them both. Your brother was crying, and Monica was so quiet that I thought she was sleeping.””

She smiled faintly through her tears.

“I kissed them both. I told them they would never be alone.””

Her smile disappeared.

“Then I woke up in another room.””

Ethan looked up.

“What happened?””

Evelyn's hands began to shake.

“They told me there had been complications. They said my son had died. When I asked to see him, they said the body had already been taken away.””

“And Monica?”” Taylor asked.

“They told me she had been transferred to another hospital because she needed special care.””

Evelyn's voice broke.

“I was still recovering. I couldn't stand without help. By the time I was able to leave the hospital, the records had changed, and no one would tell me where my daughter was.””

Monica wiped her mother's tears.

“Who changed the records?””

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“Denise.””

Ethan flinched.

Evelyn continued.

“Richard came to see me three weeks later. He told me he'd discovered the truth. He said Denise had arranged for Ethan to be taken from the hospital and brought to the Whitmore estate.””

“Why didn't he bring me back?”” Ethan asked.

“He wanted to. But Denise threatened to accuse him of kidnapping you. She said she would tell the police that I had agreed to give you up.””

Ethan stared at her.

“She could have done that?””

“She had money, lawyers, and people who owed her favors. I had nothing.””

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

“Richard promised he would make things right. He told me he was collecting evidence. He said he would come back for both of you.””

Monica's eyes filled with tears.

“But he died before he could.””

Evelyn nodded.

“The night he died, Denise came to see me. She said Richard had been killed in a car accident. Then she told me that if I ever contacted Ethan or Monica, she would make sure I was arrested for abandoning my children.””

David, who had remained near the doorway, stepped into the room.

Evelyn stared at him.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then she whispered, “David?””

He nodded.

“I'm here, Evie.””

She began to cry again.

David crossed the room and embraced his wife.

“I thought I'd never see you again.””

Evelyn held him tightly.

“I thought you hated me.””

“Never.””

They stood together, holding each other as though the years between them had finally become something they could survive.

Monica turned away to give them privacy.

Taylor felt a cramp tighten across her abdomen.

She pressed a hand against her belly and inhaled sharply.

Ethan noticed immediately.

“Taylor?””

“It's happening again.””

Monica called for the nurse.

Within minutes, Taylor was being examined in a nearby room. The doctor confirmed that the baby was still doing well but advised her to rest and avoid further stress.

When Taylor returned, Evelyn was waiting beside the bed.

“May I?”” Evelyn asked, gesturing toward Taylor's belly.

Taylor smiled through her exhaustion.

“Of course.””

Evelyn placed her hand gently against the curve of Taylor's stomach.

A small movement answered her touch.

Evelyn laughed softly.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

Her eyes filled again.

“I spent twenty-nine years thinking I'd never hold another grandchild.””

Taylor's smile faded.

“Grandchild?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Ethan is my son. If you're carrying his child, then that baby is my grandchild.””

Taylor glanced at Monica.

Monica nodded.

“Your baby's genetic connection to the Vale family is something we still need to confirm, but the family relationship between Ethan and Monica appears strongly supported by the recovered records. Proper testing will help establish the biological facts.””

Evelyn stroked Taylor's hand.

“Whatever the tests say, you're welcome in this family.””

Taylor's eyes filled with tears.

She had spent three years trying to earn Denise's approval.

Now, in a quiet room far from the Whitmore mansion, a woman she had met less than an hour earlier was offering her the kindness she had always wanted.

“Thank you,” Taylor whispered.

Evelyn smiled.

“Call me Evelyn.””

Before anyone could respond, Monica's phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from the private investigator.

Monica read it once.

Then again.

Her expression hardened.

“What is it?”” Ethan asked.

Monica showed him the screen.

The message contained a photograph of a document recovered from Denise's abandoned car.

It was a signed medical authorization dated three months earlier.

The patient listed was Taylor Mitchell.

The procedure was scheduled for the following morning.

Ethan stared at the page.

“What is this?””

Monica's voice turned cold.

“An authorization to terminate a pregnancy.””

Taylor's face went white.

“But I never signed that.””

“No,” Monica replied.

“You didn't.””

Evelyn gripped the edge of the bed.

“Denise forged her signature?””

Monica nodded.

“And the document contains a second signature.””

Ethan leaned closer.

The name at the bottom belonged to a physician at the private clinic Denise used.

But beneath the signature, a handwritten note had been added.

Patient's consent obtained through legal guardian.

Taylor's hands began to shake.

“I'm an adult. I don't have a legal guardian.””

Monica stared at the document.

“Exactly.””

Ethan rose from his chair.

“I'm calling the police.””

“Wait,” Monica said.

She zoomed in on the photograph.

The authorization had been processed through a medical office owned by a company connected to the Whitmore Foundation.

The same foundation Denise had used to steal millions.

Monica looked at Evelyn, then at Taylor.

“This wasn't just about hiding the past,” she said.

“Denise has been preparing for this for months.””

Taylor's voice trembled.

“Why would she want to terminate my pregnancy?””

Monica studied the final line of the document.

Then she looked at Ethan.

“Because the baby may be the one person who can connect the altered birth records to the Whitmore family.””

Ethan shook his head.

“She wouldn't hurt her own grandchild.””

Monica looked at him sadly.

“She raised you for twenty-nine years, and she still chose the truth over your safety.””

Taylor clutched her belly.

Outside the room, footsteps hurried down the corridor.

A nurse appeared at the door, pale and breathless.

“Ms. Vale?””

Monica stood.

“What happened?””

“The clinic just called. Someone claiming to be Taylor's husband has requested that she be transferred there immediately.””

Ethan stared at her.

“I never called them.””

The nurse swallowed.

“They're already on their way.””

And from the corridor came the sound of an elevator opening.

A man's voice followed.

“I'm here for Taylor Mitchell.””

Monica stepped between the doorway and the bed.

Because the man approaching them wasn't a doctor.

May you like

It was Denise Whitmore's personal attorney.

And he was carrying a court order.
