Chapter 5: The Daughter Denise Tried to Erase
Ethan stared at the phone until the ringing stopped.
Then it started again.
Taylor stood beside him, one hand resting against her belly.
“Answer it,” she said.
Ethan looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because your mother knows we're here. And whatever she has to say, I want to hear it.””
Monica shook her head.
“Put it on speaker. Don't agree to anything, and don't tell her what we've found.””
Ethan accepted the call.
“Mom?””
Denise's voice came through immediately.
“Where are you?””
“Why?””
“Don't play games with me, Ethan. I know you've gone to the boathouse.””
Ethan glanced at Monica.
“How do you know that?””
“Because I know you better than you know yourself.””
“Then you know I'm done lying for you.””
A sharp breath sounded through the phone.
“You have no idea what you're dealing with.””
“I've heard that enough today.””
“Listen to me carefully. Bring me the lockbox. Bring me every document inside it, and I'll make sure Taylor and the baby are taken care of.””
Taylor's expression hardened.
Ethan's voice turned cold.
“Are you threatening my wife again?””
“I'm offering you a way out.””
“A way out of what?””
“Of a scandal that will destroy everything you have.””
Ethan looked at the adoption agreement.
“What did you do at the hospital?””
Silence.
Then Denise spoke softly.
“Your father should have burned those papers.””
“Did you take me from another woman?””
“Ethan—”
“Did you?””
Her voice cracked.
“I gave you a home. I raised you. I loved you.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
“You were my son in every way that mattered.””
Taylor closed her eyes.
Ethan looked as though he had stopped breathing.
“Who was my birth mother?””
Denise began to cry.
“You don't understand what happened that night.””
“Then tell me.””
“I can't.””
“You won't.””
“Your father made me promise.””
Ethan's expression changed.
“Promise what?””
Denise inhaled shakily.
“To keep the girl away from you.””
Monica moved closer to the phone.
“Which girl, Denise?””
The silence on the other end became absolute.
Then Denise whispered, “You.””
Monica's eyes narrowed.
“Me?””
“You were never supposed to find out.””
David stumbled backward and caught the edge of the table.
Ethan looked at Monica in disbelief.
“Are you saying Monica is my sister?””
Denise began sobbing.
“I didn't know what else to do.””
Monica's face had gone completely still.
“Explain.””
“I was told the girl was dead. The hospital said she hadn't survived. I believed them.””
“But you kept the records.””
“I didn't know what they meant!””
“You paid the hospital administrator.””
“I was protecting my family!””
Monica laughed once, without humor.
“Your family? You took a newborn child from her mother and built an entire life around the theft.””
“I gave Ethan everything!””
“You gave him a false history.””
Denise's voice rose.
“Richard wanted to confess. He wanted to tell everyone that the baby had been taken illegally. He said he'd give the boy back to his birth mother, even if it destroyed our marriage.””
Ethan looked at the adoption agreement again.
“Why didn't he?””
“Because I begged him not to.””
“And he agreed?””
Denise hesitated.
“No.””
The single word changed everything.
Monica leaned toward the phone.
“What did Richard do?””
“He contacted Evelyn. He arranged to meet her.””
David's face drained of color.
“When?””
“The night of the accident.””
David gripped his cane.
“You knew my wife?””
Denise's breathing became ragged.
“I met her once.””
“You stole her child.””
“I didn't know the whole truth at the time!””
“You knew enough to pay someone to alter the records.””
Denise fell silent.
Monica closed her eyes briefly, then opened them.
“Denise, where is Evelyn now?””
“I don't know.””
“That's a lie.””
“I haven't seen her in years!””
“Where is she?””
Denise began crying harder.
“I sent her away!””
David made a sound of pure anguish.
“Where?””
“I don't remember the address.””
Monica's voice hardened.
“Then remember.””
For several seconds, Denise said nothing.
Finally, she whispered, “A care facility in Connecticut. Richard paid for it.””
David stared at her.
“Why would Evelyn need a care facility?””
Denise's silence was answer enough.
Monica's voice dropped.
“What did you do to her?””
“Nothing!””
“Did you threaten her?””
“I only wanted her to stop asking questions.””
“Did you tell her the baby was dead?””
Denise sobbed.
“Yes.””
David closed his eyes.
Ethan leaned against the table, his face gray.
For twenty-nine years, he had believed he was the only child of Richard and Denise Whitmore. He had grown up surrounded by expensive toys, private schools, family vacations, and a mother who had insisted that love meant loyalty.
Now he was learning that the foundation of his life might have been built on a stolen child and a mother's grief.
He looked at Monica.
“Why didn't you know?””
Monica shook her head.
“My mother told me I was an only child. When I was little, I asked why she kept an old hospital bracelet in her jewelry box. She said it belonged to a baby she'd cared for as a nurse.””
David's eyes filled with tears.
“I remember that bracelet.””
Monica turned toward him.
“You do?””
He nodded.
“Evelyn wore one around her wrist after the birth. She said she wanted to remember the date.””
Monica looked at the faded hospital band on the table.
The name Baby Boy Whitmore had been written over another name, but a few letters remained visible beneath the ink.
*V-A-L-E.*
Monica touched the band with trembling fingers.
“My mother didn't know she had twins,” she whispered.
“She thought one baby had died, and the other had been taken by the hospital.””
David reached for her hand.
“Then she lost both of you.””
Monica bowed her head.
For a moment, the powerful woman who had arrived at the mansion with a legal team and twenty years of evidence looked like a daughter who had just discovered how much of her life had been stolen.
Then she straightened.
“Denise, listen carefully. You're going to tell the authorities everything you know about Evelyn's whereabouts.””
“No.””
Monica's eyes narrowed.
“Excuse me?””
“You can't take my son away from me.””
Ethan stepped toward the phone.
“You lost the right to make that demand when you lied about my birth.””
“Ethan, please!””
“No more.””
He ended the call.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Taylor felt a sudden tightening across her abdomen.
She gripped the edge of the table.
Ethan noticed immediately.
“Taylor?””
“I'm okay.””
“Are you sure?””
She took a slow breath.
“I don't know.””
Monica stepped toward her.
“Let's sit down.””
Taylor lowered herself onto a wooden bench, her breathing uneven.
The baby moved.
Then another cramp tightened across her belly.
Ethan knelt in front of her.
“Look at me. Is it pain?””
“A little.””
“Daniel!”” Monica called toward the door.
“Get the car ready. We're taking her to the hospital.””
Taylor shook her head.
“Wait. I need to ask something.””
Monica crouched beside her.
“Ask.””
“Why did Denise attack me today? She knew you might come back. She knew the records existed. Why risk everything by going after me?””
Monica exchanged a look with Ethan.
He looked away.
Taylor's heart sank.
“What aren't you telling me?””
Ethan swallowed.
“Your medical report.””
“What about it?””
He took the damp, partially recovered report from the table.
“The test you had last week. The one Denise saw at the mansion.””
Taylor stared at him.
“I told you about that test.””
“You told me the doctor wanted to run additional genetic screening because of a family history of a rare blood disorder.””
“Yes.””
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“Mom found out the results before you did.””
Taylor felt the room tilt.
“How?””
“She has a friend at the clinic. Someone who had access to the preliminary report.””
Monica stood.
“What did the report say?””
Ethan hesitated.
Taylor grabbed his wrist.
“Tell me.””
He looked at her, his voice breaking.
“The doctor found a genetic marker that doesn't match the Whitmore family history.””
Taylor stared at him.
“So?””
“So the marker matches a rare inherited condition documented in the Vale family.””
David's cane slipped again.
Monica turned sharply.
“What condition?””
Ethan looked at Monica.
“The same condition that appeared in records from the hospital the night you and I were born.””
Taylor could barely breathe.
“Are you saying my baby is connected to this family?””
“No,” Ethan said quickly.
“Not in the way you're thinking.””
But he looked terrified.
Monica took the report from him and studied the page.
Then she looked up.
“This doesn't establish a family relationship,” she said.
“Genetic markers can overlap, and preliminary tests can be misleading. We need the complete results.””
Taylor swallowed.
“Then why did Denise react like this?””
Monica's expression turned grim.
“Because she thinks the baby could expose something else.””
She examined the document again.
A second page had been folded behind the first.
Taylor hadn't seen it before.
Monica unfolded it.
There, in the doctor's notes, was a sentence marked urgent.
Recommend confirmatory testing due to possible match with archived neonatal sample.
Monica stared at the words.
David stepped beside her.
“Archived sample?””
She nodded.
“Some hospitals retain newborn blood samples for medical research or screening. If this hospital kept the original samples, a properly authorized comparison could establish whether the birth records were altered.””
Taylor looked at Ethan.
“Could it prove you're Monica's brother?””
“Possibly,” Monica answered.
“If the sample is authentic and the chain of custody is reliable.””
Taylor's voice trembled.
“And Denise knows that?””
Monica folded the report.
“She knows enough to be frightened.””
Ethan took his wife's hand.
“I'm sorry.””
Taylor looked at him.
“For what?””
“For not telling you what I found.””
“That's not an answer.””
He swallowed.
“I discovered a reference to your family in my father's ledger three weeks ago. I thought it was a mistake. Then I saw the preliminary test results.””
Taylor stared at him.
“You knew there was a connection before today?””
“I suspected one.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was trying to confirm it.””
She pulled her hand away.
“By yourself.””
Ethan lowered his head.
Taylor's eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained steady.
“You keep telling me you were protecting me. Yet every time you hide the truth, you leave me alone with the consequences.””
He had no answer.
Outside, a car door slammed.
Daniel appeared at the entrance.
“Monica, we have a problem.””
She stood.
“What happened?””
“The police are at the main gate. But Mrs. Whitmore has already left the property.””
Ethan rose sharply.
“She what?””
Daniel's face tightened.
“She took a car from the garage. And before she left, she ordered the staff to burn the documents in the study.””
Monica's expression turned cold.
“Did anyone stop her?””
“I called the police.””
“Good. Tell them the boathouse contains evidence and nobody is to touch it.””
Daniel nodded and hurried away.
Monica looked at Ethan.
“Your mother knows we're getting close to the truth. If she's running, she'll go to the one place where she believes she can still control the evidence.””
“The hospital,” Ethan said.
Monica shook her head.
“No.””
She lifted the photograph of Richard and the young Ethan.
“There's one person who knows where the original records are hidden.””
David looked at her.
“Who?””
Monica turned the photograph over.
A new detail caught her eye: a handwritten address beneath Richard's message.
It was not the hospital.
It was a small town in Connecticut.
The same town where Denise had sent Evelyn Vale twenty-nine years earlier.
Monica stared at the address.
Then her phone rang again.
This time, the caller was the private investigator who had been searching for Evelyn.
Monica answered.
A woman's voice came through, breathless and frightened.
“Ms. Vale, we found her.””
Monica closed her eyes.
“Is she alive?””
“Yes. But you need to come immediately.””
“Why?””
The investigator hesitated.
“Because someone got here before us.””
A pause.

Then the words that made Monica's blood run cold.
“And they left a message saying Denise Whitmore would kill her if she ever spoke.””
