Chapter 2: The Name That Terrified Denise
Monica Vale stepped out of the SUV wearing a charcoal suit, black heels, and a calm expression that somehow made the entire mansion seem smaller.
She was in her early fifties, with silver threaded through her dark hair and a thin scar running from the edge of her left eyebrow toward her temple.
She didn't look at the broken chair.
She didn't look at the bat lying on the ground.
Her eyes went straight to Taylor.
Then to the hand Taylor had wrapped protectively around her unborn child.
Something cold entered Monica's expression.
“Who did this?”” she asked.
Nobody answered.
The chauffeur remained beside the driver's door. The gardener stared at the ground. Two housekeepers watched from the mansion's open French doors.
Denise was the first to recover.
“This is a private family matter,” she said.
Monica slowly turned toward her.
“Is that what you call attacking a pregnant woman?””
Denise swallowed.
“I was disciplining someone who has no respect for my household.””
Monica glanced at the bat.
“Disciplining?””
Her voice remained quiet.
That made it worse.
“Is that what you told yourself when you picked up a weapon and raised it over a woman carrying your grandchild?””
Denise's fingers twitched.
“You don't understand the situation.””
“Then explain it.””
“I don't owe you an explanation.””
Monica took one step forward.
“Interesting. You used to say that to people who asked where their money went.””
Denise went completely still.
Taylor watched the exchange through blurred vision.
She had never seen anyone speak to Denise that way. Not at charity galas, where wealthy guests praised Denise's generosity. Not at family dinners, where even Ethan's father seemed to choose his words carefully. Not even Ethan, who had learned to avoid arguments with his mother whenever possible.
Yet Monica spoke as though Denise were the one standing on trial.
“Who are you?”” Taylor whispered.
Monica heard her.
She immediately crossed the patio and knelt beside Taylor.
“I'm Monica Vale.””
She offered her hand.
Taylor hesitated before taking it.
“Can you stand?””
“I think so.””
“Don't rush. Put your weight on me.””
Monica helped her rise slowly, one arm supporting Taylor's back.
“Are you bleeding?”” Monica asked.
“I don't think so. I haven't been hit, but she—”
Taylor's voice cracked.
Monica glanced at the pool, where the medical report floated in torn, waterlogged pieces.
“Did she strike you?””
“No. The bat hit the ground.””
Monica exhaled, but her face didn't soften.
“Then we're going to have a doctor examine you anyway.””
Denise stepped forward.
“You can't take her anywhere.””
Monica didn't turn around.
“Watch me.””
“This is my property!””
“And that is a pregnant woman who was begging you to spare her baby.””
Denise's cheeks flushed.
“You have no authority here.””
Monica finally faced her.
“Are you certain you want to discuss authority?””
For the first time, Denise appeared unable to find an immediate answer.
Monica reached into her jacket and removed a black leather cardholder.
She opened it.
A gold emblem flashed in the afternoon light.
Denise stared at it.
Then her eyes widened.
“No,” she whispered.
Monica put the cardholder away.
“Yes.””
Denise took a step backward.
Taylor looked from one woman to the other.
“What is happening?””
Neither answered her.
Denise shook her head rapidly.
“This is impossible. You left the country.””
“I came back.””
“You can't just walk onto my property and start making threats.””
“I haven't threatened you.””
Monica's eyes moved to the baseball bat.
“You've done enough threatening for both of us.””
Denise's lips parted.
For a moment, she looked less like the queen of the Whitmore estate and more like a woman who had just heard a locked door open behind her.
Monica turned toward the SUV.
“Daniel.””
The chauffeur immediately approached.
“Yes, Ms. Vale?””
“Call Dr. Harris. Tell her we're bringing Taylor in for an examination. Then contact my legal team and ask them to preserve the security footage from this property.””
Denise snapped out of her shock.
“You can't touch my security system!””
Daniel didn't even look at her.
“Understood.””
“And contact the police,” Monica added.
“Tell them there has been an assault involving a pregnant woman. We'll provide the evidence when they arrive.””
Denise rushed toward the chauffeur.
“You will do no such thing!””
Daniel stopped.
He looked at Monica.
She gave a single nod.
He continued toward the SUV.
Denise's face twisted with fury.
“Do you know who you're dealing with?””
Monica looked almost disappointed.
“I was hoping you would.””
The housekeepers exchanged frightened glances.
Taylor felt Monica's hand tighten around hers.
“Who is she?”” Taylor whispered again.
Monica lowered her voice.
“Someone your husband should have told you about.””
Taylor's stomach tightened.
“Ethan knows you?””
“He knows my name.””
“Why didn't he tell me?””
“Because he was afraid that knowing me would put you in danger.””
Taylor stared at her.
Before she could ask another question, a loud voice came from the mansion.
“Mom?””
Ethan appeared in the doorway.
His tie was loose, his shirt sleeves rolled up, and his face was pale. He hurried across the patio toward Taylor, dropping to his knees in front of her.
“Taylor! Oh my God, are you hurt?””
She clutched his arms.
“Ethan, what is happening? Your mother attacked me. She said you stole something from the family. She said people went to prison because of you.””
Ethan's eyes flicked toward Denise.
His expression changed.
“Mom, what did you do?””
Denise lifted her chin.
“Don't you dare speak to me like that.””
Ethan stood.
“You raised a bat over my pregnant wife?””
“She came here looking for documents!””
“She's my wife!””
“And I am your mother!””
“You could have killed her!””
Denise slapped him.
The sound echoed across the patio.
Taylor gasped.
Ethan didn't move. He simply turned his head back toward his mother.
For the first time, Taylor saw something in his eyes she had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not disappointment.
Fear.
“Ethan,” Monica said.
He turned toward her.
The two stared at each other.
Then Ethan's shoulders sagged.
“You came.””
“I said I would.””
He glanced at Taylor, then back at Monica.
“Is it safe for her to know?””
Monica studied him.
“That depends on whether you're finally ready to tell the truth.””
Denise rushed between them.
“No! You will not discuss this here.””
Monica looked at the woman.
“Move.””
“I'm not moving.””
Monica took a folded document from her briefcase and held it up.
The paper bore an official seal and several signatures.
Denise's face drained of color.
“Where did you get that?””
“From the records you thought had disappeared.””
“You have no right—”
“The court disagrees.””
Monica turned the document so Ethan could see the heading.
His eyes widened.
“That's the original?””
“The original,” Monica confirmed.
“Along with the missing financial records and the witness statements.””
Taylor looked at her husband.
“What original?””
Ethan rubbed a hand over his mouth.
“Taylor, I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
“Soon.””
“After your mother hit me with a baseball bat?””
He flinched.
“No. Never.””
“Then start talking.””
Ethan looked toward Monica.
Monica nodded once.
He drew a shaky breath.
“My father didn't die the way everyone told us.””
The patio fell silent.
Taylor stared at him.
“Your father died of a heart attack.””
“That's what the family announced.””
Denise's voice rose sharply.
“Ethan, shut your mouth!””
He ignored her.
“Three weeks before he died, my father discovered that millions of dollars had been moved out of the family foundation. Money intended for a children's hospital and several community programs.””
Taylor looked at the document in Monica's hand.
“Who took it?””
Ethan's eyes settled on his mother.
Denise began shaking her head.
“Don't you dare.””
Ethan swallowed.
“My mother told the board that my father had authorized the transfers. But he hadn't. He was preparing to expose her when he died.””
Taylor felt the ground tilt beneath her.
“You're saying your mother stole the money?””
“Not just the money,” Monica said.
“She falsified his signature, altered company records, and arranged for the blame to fall on an employee who had refused to cooperate.””
“Who?””
Monica's expression hardened.
“My brother.””
Taylor stared at her.
Monica continued.
“His name was David Vale. He was the foundation's chief financial officer. He spent six years in prison for a crime he didn't commit.””
Ethan lowered his head.
“My father helped build the case against him before he realized what was happening. After Dad died, I found letters that proved the records had been altered.””
“And you stayed silent?”” Taylor asked.
“I was twenty-two. My mother controlled the company, the family money, and every lawyer I could afford. When I tried to challenge her, she threatened to destroy anyone who helped me.””
Monica's gaze remained fixed on Denise.
“She did more than threaten.””
Denise's voice trembled with fury.
“You don't know what happened back then.””
“I know what happened to my brother.””
“He was guilty!””
“Then why did you pay a witness to change his testimony?””
Denise opened her mouth.
No sound emerged.
Monica removed another paper from the briefcase.
“And why did you transfer money to that witness's offshore account two days after the trial?””
Taylor pressed a hand to her lips.
Ethan looked sick.
“Mom?””
Denise shook her head.
“Those records are fabricated.””
“Then you'll have no trouble explaining them to the investigators.””
“You can't prove anything.””
Monica tilted her head.
“That's what you told yourself twenty years ago.””
For several seconds, Denise looked as if she might collapse.
Then her expression changed.
She looked at Taylor.
At Ethan.
At Monica.
And finally at the black SUV.
Her gaze settled on the rear passenger window, where a second figure sat motionless inside the vehicle.
Monica followed her eyes.
“Yes,” she said.
“He came with me.””
Denise stumbled backward.
“No.””
Monica's voice turned icy.
“David is alive, Denise.””
The name struck the patio like a gunshot.
Denise dropped to her knees.
“Please,” she whispered.
May you like
Taylor stared in disbelief as the woman who had terrorized her moments earlier pressed her hands together and looked up at Monica.
“Please, Monica. Don't let him testify.””
