Chapter 8: The Truth About My Marriage

Detective Harris asked everyone to leave the room.
I refused.
Michael needed to tell me everything, and I wasn't going to let another person decide when I was allowed to hear the truth.
Harris eventually agreed to stay.
Michael took several deep breaths.
“Your father met Vanessa when she was twenty-three.””
I nodded.
“I know she was his daughter.””
“Not exactly. He didn't know at first.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Michael explained that my father had an affair with a woman named Eleanor before marrying my mother. Eleanor gave birth to a daughter and disappeared shortly afterward.
My father searched for her but never found her.
Years later, he received a letter from a private investigator.
The daughter was alive.
Her name was Vanessa.
She had been raised by a couple who lived in another state. They had told her that her biological father had abandoned her.
When she turned twenty-three, she discovered his identity.
“She contacted him,” Michael said.
“Dad was overwhelmed. He wanted to make up for the years he'd missed.””
I looked at the photograph.
“Why didn't he tell us?””
“Because Mom was already struggling with the family situation. Dad was afraid the news would destroy their marriage.””
I leaned forward.
“What happened when Vanessa met him?””
“At first, she acted grateful. She visited him regularly. She called him Dad when nobody else was around.””
Michael paused.
“Then she started asking about the inheritance.””
I shook my head.
“And Dad refused?””
“He told her she would receive something, but the money was already divided among the family. Michael's trust was separate. Your portion was separate. Mom's portion was separate.””
I looked at him.
“So Vanessa wanted all of it.””
“Yes.””
Michael reached for his water.
“But there was another problem.””
“What?””
“Your mother.””
He explained that my mother had discovered Vanessa's financial activities. She found altered documents and unauthorized transfers. She confronted my father.
At first, he refused to believe her.
Then he checked the accounts himself.
He discovered that Vanessa had been quietly transferring money into accounts controlled by Margaret.
My father threatened to contact the police.
Vanessa threatened to expose the family secret.
“She told him that if he ruined her life, she'd ruin his,” Michael said.
I looked at the detective.
“Did Dad ever report her?””
“No,” Michael answered.
“He wanted to protect the family.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That decision destroyed us.””
Michael nodded.
“Mom was the only one who refused to stay quiet.””
He told me that my mother had confronted Vanessa in the old house.
There had been an argument.
Vanessa accused her of stealing the life she deserved.
My mother told her she was welcome to be part of the family, but she would never be allowed to control it.
Two days later, my mother became ill.
The doctors initially believed she had suffered a sudden medical emergency.
But Michael said there had been signs of poisoning.
He had seen Vanessa carrying a bottle of medication into my mother's room.
At the time, he hadn't understood what he was witnessing.
After my mother died, he confronted Vanessa.
She denied everything.
Then she told him something he never forgot.
“She said, 'Your mother should have stayed out of things that didn't concern her.''”
My hands tightened into fists.
“Why didn't Dad tell me?””
“He tried. That's why he made the recording.””
Detective Harris opened another file.
“There's something else you need to see.””
The footage showed my father sitting at his desk again.
He looked directly at the camera.
“Daniel, I know you may hate me for what I've done. I should have told you about Vanessa. I should have protected your mother. I should have stopped Margaret before things went too far.””
He paused.
“But the greatest mistake I made was allowing Vanessa to marry you.””
I felt my chest tighten.
My father continued.
“She insisted she loved you. I wanted to believe her. But I discovered she had been collecting information about your finances, your work, and your personal life long before you proposed.””
The screen went silent.
I stared.
“How long?””
Michael answered.
“Before you met her.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Vanessa knew who you were. She knew your family. She knew your father had two sons. She knew about the inheritance.””
I felt sick.
“Are you saying our relationship was planned?””
Michael nodded slowly.
“I'm afraid so.””
I remembered meeting Vanessa at a charity fundraiser.
She had spilled coffee on my jacket.
We laughed.
She apologized.
We talked for hours.
A few weeks later, we started dating.
I had thought it was fate.
Now I wondered whether every accidental meeting had been carefully arranged.
“Did she ever love me?”” I asked.
Michael didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Detective Harris closed the laptop.
“We've recovered enough evidence to pursue charges relating to the confinement, abduction, and financial crimes. But we still need to locate Vanessa.””
I stood.
“She's somewhere nearby.””
“We're tracking her phone.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Lily sitting in the back of a car.
She was crying.
Beside her was Vanessa.
The message read:
*You have something that belongs to me. Bring the music box to the old house. Come alone, or you'll never see your daughter again.*
I showed Harris.
She immediately called her team.
“Send this to the cyber unit. We need the location.””
I stared at the photograph.
Lily was wearing the same pink sweater she'd worn that morning.
“She's alive.””
“Yes,” Harris said.
“And we're going to bring her home.””
I looked at Michael.
He was trying to get out of bed.
“Where do you think you're going?””
“I'm coming with you.””
“No.””
“Daniel, you don't understand Vanessa.””
“I understand enough.””
Michael shook his head.
“She won't stop until she gets the card.””
I held up the music box.
“Then she'll have to go through the police.””
Michael stared at it.
“There's another compartment.””
I looked down.
“What?””
He pointed toward the flower carvings.
“Press the little one on the left.””
I did.
A tiny section of wood shifted.
Inside was a folded strip of paper.
I carefully pulled it out.
There was a series of numbers written on it.
Below the numbers was a sentence.
The truth is not in the money. It is in the name.
Detective Harris took the paper.
“What does this mean?””
Michael shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Then he suddenly remembered something.
“Wait.””
He looked at me.
“Dad used to tell us a story about the music box. He said the melody was made from our mother's favorite song.””
I nodded.
“I remember.””
“He also said the first letters of the notes meant something.””
I opened the box again.
The melody played.
Michael listened carefully.
Then he whispered a name.
“Eleanor.””
I froze.
The name of Vanessa's biological mother.
Michael continued.
“Dad said Eleanor left something behind. Something that proved who Vanessa really was.””
I looked at the detective.
“Could the memory card contain it?””
“Possibly.””
She examined the recovered files.
One folder was password-protected.
The folder was named simply:
*THE ORIGINAL*
Harris tried several combinations.
Nothing worked.
Then I remembered the numbers from the music box.
I entered them.
The folder opened.
Inside were scanned documents, bank statements, and an audio recording.
Detective Harris played it.
A woman's voice filled the room.
“Robert, if Vanessa ever comes looking for you, don't trust her. She knows what happened to her mother.””
I looked at Michael.
The voice was unfamiliar.
Then the woman continued.
“She believes you abandoned her. But the truth is that someone paid me to disappear.””
There was a pause.
“I know who arranged it.””
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
“Who is that?””
Michael's face had gone pale.
“Eleanor.””
I leaned closer.
The detective opened the final document.
It was a signed statement.
A statement claiming that Eleanor had not abandoned Vanessa.
She had been forced to leave.
And the person who paid her to disappear was not my father.
It was Margaret.
I looked toward the hospital door.
“Why would Margaret do that?””
Michael answered quietly.
“Because she didn't want another woman having a claim on my father's inheritance.””
I stared at him.
“Then Vanessa's entire life was built on a lie.””
Michael nodded.
“And she has spent years blaming the wrong person.””
Before I could respond, Detective Harris's phone rang.
She listened.
Then her expression changed.
“What do you mean she's at the property?””
She turned toward me.
“Mr. Carter, we have a location.””
I stood.
“Where?””
Harris looked at the screen.
“The old house.””
The house where Michael had been held.
The house where my mother had confronted Vanessa.
The house where everything had started.
I picked up the music box.
And this time, I knew exactly why Vanessa wanted me to come alone.
May you like
She wasn't trying to recover the inheritance.
She was trying to destroy the last person who could expose her.
