Chapter 5: My Wife's Final Bargain

I didn't remember driving back to the police station.
I only remembered Detective Harris opening the interview room door and the sound of my own voice.
“Where is my daughter?””
Vanessa sat at the table.
Her makeup was smeared, and her hair hung loosely around her shoulders. A paper cup of water sat untouched in front of her.
She looked up.
“Daniel.””
“Where is Lily?””
She swallowed.
“Is she safe?””
“Don't you dare ask me that.””
“I need to know she's safe.””
“You're going to tell me where she is.””
Vanessa looked toward the detective.
“I want my lawyer.””
Harris closed the door.
“Mrs. Carter, you have already been advised of your rights. Your husband is asking about his missing daughter.””
Vanessa turned back to me.
“I didn't take her.””
“Michael says you arranged it.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“Michael is sick. You can't believe everything he says.””
“He's been locked in a room for seven years. I think he's earned the right to be heard.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Then she whispered, “Margaret was supposed to bring Lily back.””
I stepped toward the table.
“What?””
“She promised me she would bring her back.””
“You sent my daughter to a woman who helped imprison your brother?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“I didn't know she would take her!””
I stared at her.
“Then explain exactly what happened.””
She wiped her face.
“Margaret contacted me three weeks ago. She said the situation was becoming dangerous. She told me Michael had been talking to Lily and giving her information about the family.””
“What information?””
“I don't know.””
“Try again.””
Vanessa looked at the detective.
Then she took a deep breath.
“Margaret said Lily had been asking questions about your father. About his old study. About a box he supposedly left behind.””
I remembered Michael's words.
Something your father left behind.
“What box?””
“I don't know.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Of losing everything.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You already lost it.””
She flinched.
Then she leaned forward.
“Daniel, please. You have to understand something. I didn't plan for any of this to happen.””
“Did you or did you not know Michael was alive?””
She nodded.
“When did you find him?””
“Seven years ago.””
The answer struck harder than I expected.
“Seven years.””
She began crying.
“I found him after he came to my apartment. He was threatening to expose the financial records. I panicked. Margaret told me she could make him disappear until we figured out what to do.””
“You believed her?””
“I was scared.””
“So you helped her imprison him.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never thought it would last this long.””
I stared at her.
“What does that even mean?””
She covered her face.
“Margaret kept saying we needed to wait. Every time I tried to end it, she threatened to expose me.””
“Expose you for what?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she whispered, “The money.””
I leaned against the wall.
“You stole from the construction company.””
“I paid it back.””
“After Michael disappeared.””
She nodded.
“And Margaret helped you?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
The pieces were coming together.
Vanessa had stolen money. Michael had discovered it. Margaret had helped silence him because she needed control over the inheritance and feared the documents would expose the family arrangement.
But why Lily?
I looked at my wife.
“What does our daughter have to do with any of this?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Your father left her something.””
“What?””
“A letter.””
I stared at her.
“What letter?””
“He gave it to me before he died.””
The room went silent.
“You had a letter from my father?””
She nodded.
“He said it was meant for Lily when she turned eighteen.””
I felt a wave of anger so intense that I struggled to speak.
“And you hid it?””
“I didn't know what it contained.””
“Then why didn't you give it to me?””
“Because Margaret told me not to.””
I walked toward the table.
“Where is it?””
“I don't have it.””
“Where?””
“Margaret took it.””
I turned to Detective Harris.
“Can we get her location?””
“We're working on it.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed my hand.
“Daniel, listen to me. Margaret doesn't want Lily hurt. She wants the letter.””
I pulled my hand away.
“You sent my daughter to her.””
“I thought she would only ask Lily questions.””
“You thought an eight-year-old could protect herself from someone who has been hiding a kidnapping for seven years?””
Vanessa started sobbing.
“I made a mistake.””
I stared at her.
“No. You made hundreds of decisions. Every meal you served Michael behind that locked door.
Every lie you told me. Every time Lily asked why Mommy was carrying food upstairs. You made those decisions every day.””
She had no answer.
Detective Harris received a call.
She stepped outside.
I watched Vanessa carefully.
For the first time, she looked less like a frightened wife and more like someone who had finally run out of people to manipulate.
“Why did you grab Lily's wrist?”” I asked.
She looked up.
“Because she was going to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
“That she had found Michael.””
I felt sick.
“She was feeding him because you wouldn't.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn't want her involved.””
“Then you should have opened that door seven years ago.””
She looked down.
A few seconds passed.
Then she said something unexpected.
“Daniel, your father wasn't the man you thought he was.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Margaret isn't the only person who knew about Michael. Your mother knew too.””
I stared at her.
“My mother died without knowing where Michael was.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. She knew he was alive.””
I stepped backward.
“That's impossible.””
“Your mother visited him.””
“When?””
“Before she died.””
My throat tightened.
“Where?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“At the old house.””
I couldn't move.
She continued.
“She begged Margaret to release him. Margaret refused. Your mother came home crying and told me she couldn't live with the secret anymore.””
I gripped the back of the chair.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because Margaret threatened to destroy the family.””
I stared at my wife.
“My mother spent her final years believing she had lost her son.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She was afraid that if you knew the truth, Margaret would hurt you too.””
I turned away.
For seven years, I had carried guilt for ignoring Michael's final phone call.
Now I was discovering that my mother had carried the same secret.
And I had never known.
The door opened.
Detective Harris returned.
“We've identified Margaret's vehicle.””
I rushed toward her.
“Where is she?””
“An abandoned property outside town. Officers are on their way.””
“I'm coming.””
“No, Mr. Carter. You need to stay here.””
“My daughter is there!””
“We have armed officers approaching the location.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“Wait!””
Harris turned.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Then she whispered:
“Don't go to that property.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because that's not where Margaret is taking Lily.””
The detective frowned.
“Then where?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She's taking her to the cemetery.””
My heart stopped.
“Which cemetery?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Your parents' cemetery.””
I felt the room disappear around me.
“Why?””
May you like
Vanessa's voice broke.
“Because your father buried something there.””
