Chapter 2: Seven Years of Lies

I didn't let go of my brother.

Not even when Vanessa started explaining.

Not even when she began repeating my name.

I carried Michael out of that room and helped him sit on the living room sofa. His body shook with exhaustion. Lily brought him a glass of water with both hands.

“Uncle Michael, I brought you sandwiches yesterday,” she whispered.

Michael looked at her.

A weak smile appeared on his face.

“I know, sweetheart. Thank you.””

I knelt in front of him.

“Don't drink too quickly. We'll get you checked by a doctor.””

He nodded.

Then he looked toward the hallway.

“Is she still there?””

I followed his gaze.

Vanessa stood near the staircase.

“I'm right here,” she said quietly.

Michael immediately lowered his eyes.

That reaction told me more than any explanation could.

I stood.

“Lily, sweetheart, go to your bedroom for a little while.””

“But Daddy—”

“I need to talk to Uncle Michael. You're not in trouble.””

She looked at Michael.

He reached out and gently touched her hand.

“It's okay, Lily. Go draw me something, all right?””

She nodded and disappeared upstairs.

The moment her bedroom door closed, I turned toward Vanessa.

“Start talking.””

She folded her arms around herself.

“Daniel, I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

“I didn't know what else to do.””

I laughed once.

It wasn't a happy sound.

“You kept my brother in a locked room for seven years. What exactly was the alternative?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“He was dangerous.””

Michael shook his head.

“That's not true.””

Vanessa snapped toward him.

“Don't.””

I stepped between them.

“Don't speak to him like that.””

For a moment, she looked genuinely shocked.

Perhaps she had become so accustomed to controlling every conversation in this house that she had forgotten what happened when someone finally challenged her.

I turned back to Michael.

“Tell me what happened.””

He stared at his hands.

“They didn't find me because I never made it to the highway.””

“What?””

Michael took a shaky breath.

“Seven years ago, I came to see you. I had something important to tell you. I called, but you didn't answer. I remembered Vanessa had mentioned she was going to visit a friend near my apartment, so I called her.””

My stomach tightened.

“She came to your apartment?””

He nodded.

“She said she'd drive me to your office. I got into her car.””

I turned toward my wife.

“You told me you had never seen Michael that weekend.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I was trying to protect our family.””

Michael continued.

“We stopped at a gas station outside town. She told me you had asked her to bring me somewhere private because you were angry with me.””

I frowned.

“I never said that.””

“I know that now.””

Michael swallowed.

“She gave me a drink. After that, I remember feeling dizzy. When I woke up, I was in a basement.””

I stared at him.

“Whose basement?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Ours.””

A strange ringing filled my ears.

“Our house?””

Michael nodded.

“The old house. Before you bought this one.””

I remembered that property.

It had belonged to Vanessa's aunt. We had lived there for two years before selling it and moving into our current home.

Michael continued.

“I was tied to a chair. Vanessa told me I had stolen money from her family. She said you knew everything and wanted me gone.””

I shook my head.

“That's insane.””

“I told her to call you. I told her I would explain everything. She wouldn't.””

“Why didn't you escape?””

Michael lifted his sleeve.

There were pale scars around his wrist.

“Because she kept threatening to make sure you never saw Lily again.””

My anger became something heavier.

Vanessa shook her head.

“He's leaving things out.””

I turned.

“What things?””

She stepped closer.

“Michael had been having problems. He was unstable. He was obsessed with our relationship. He thought I was responsible for something that happened at his workplace.””

Michael's face hardened.

“I caught you stealing.””

Vanessa went silent.

I looked between them.

“What?””

Michael leaned back, exhausted.

“Before I disappeared, I discovered that Vanessa had been transferring money from a company account. She was working as an accountant for a small construction firm. She used my login credentials because I had helped her with their computer system.””

Vanessa immediately protested.

“That is a lie.””

Michael continued.

“I found the transactions. Almost ninety thousand dollars. I told her she needed to return the money before the company discovered it.””

I stared at my wife.

“Was that why you came to see me?””

“Yes,” Michael said.

“I wanted to tell you because I thought she might be in danger. I didn't want you marrying someone who could end up in prison.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you steal that money?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa!””

“I paid it back!””

Her voice cracked.

“I made mistakes. I was young. I panicked.””

Michael shook his head.

“You didn't pay it back until after you took me.””

Vanessa's face changed.

I had never seen that expression before.

It wasn't guilt.

It was calculation.

She was trying to determine how much we knew.

I took out my phone.

“I'm calling the police.””

Vanessa rushed toward me.

“No!””

I stepped back.

“Don't touch me.””

“You can't do that, Daniel!””

“Watch me.””

She began crying harder.

“If you call the police, they'll take Lily away from me.””

I looked at her in disbelief.

“You're worried about losing custody?””

“I am her mother!””

“And he's my brother!””

My voice echoed through the house.

Michael flinched.

I immediately lowered it.

“I'm sorry.””

He shook his head.

“It's okay.””

I dialed emergency services.

Vanessa sank into the armchair.

When the dispatcher answered, I gave our address and explained that I had discovered my missing brother being held against his will.

Then I said something that made Vanessa bury her face in her hands.

“I need officers here immediately. My wife may be responsible for his disappearance.””

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Two officers entered the house while another spoke with Michael.

An ambulance was dispatched.

Vanessa sat at the dining table, answering questions with a lawyer on speakerphone.

I stayed beside my brother.

A female officer approached me.

“Mr. Carter, can you tell me when you last saw your brother?””

“Seven years ago.””

“And you had no contact with him since?””

“None.””

She glanced at the storage room.

“Did you know he was being kept here?””

“No.””

She studied my face.

Then she asked a question I hadn't considered.

“Sir, who owns this property?””

“Both of us. My wife and I.””

“And who had access to the storage room?””

“Vanessa.””

The officer nodded.

“Did anyone else know your brother was here?””

I looked toward the staircase.

“My daughter.””

The officer's expression softened.

“How old is she?””

“Eight.””

“Has she been bringing him food?””

I nodded.

“Apparently.””

The officer wrote something down.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Mr. Carter, we found something else in that room.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She glanced toward Vanessa.

“There's a camera mounted above the door. It appears to have been recording the room.””

I stared at her.

“Why would she record him?””

The officer hesitated.

“We haven't examined the footage yet.””

Then she added:

“But there's a second camera. One that points toward the hallway.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone may have been watching who entered and left that room.””

I looked toward my daughter’s bedroom.

Then toward my wife.

And I realized that Vanessa hadn't just been hiding Michael.

She had been monitoring the entire house.

The officer walked toward the storage room.

A moment later, she returned carrying a small plastic evidence bag.

Inside it was a photograph.

I recognized the picture immediately.

It showed Michael standing beside our mother.

But someone had written a date on the back.

A date from three years after Michael disappeared.

I stared at it.

“How is that possible?””

The officer turned the photograph over.

May you like

There were four handwritten words beneath the date.

He wasn't the only one.
