Chapter 9: The Original Results
The old Carter house had been empty for twenty years.
Yet when we arrived, one upstairs window was glowing.
Daniel parked without turning off the engine.
Nobody spoke.
Evelyn sat in the back seat.
Helen sat beside her.
Jessica was nowhere with us.
She had disappeared after her father's call.
I didn't trust her.
But I couldn't stop thinking about the fear in her eyes when she heard the name Samuel Miller.
Daniel looked at me.
“You stay in the car.””
“No.””
“Mom—”
“No more secrets.””
He sighed.
“Fine.””
We entered through the front door.
The house smelled of dust and damp wood.
Every floorboard creaked beneath our feet.
Daniel switched on his flashlight.
“Dad's study was upstairs.””
We climbed.
The hallway looked exactly as I remembered it.
His office.
His books.
His photographs.
Then I saw something on the wall.
A photograph of Daniel as a child.
My son stood between me and his father.
His little hand was wrapped around mine.
I touched the glass.
Daniel saw it.
“You always kept that picture.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because it was the happiest day of my life.””
He looked at me.
“You're still my mother.””
I smiled through my tears.
“Always.””
A voice came from inside the study.
“You should have stayed away.””
Daniel froze.
Dr. Samuel Miller stepped into the doorway.
He was older now.
White hair.
Thin face.
But his eyes were sharp.
Jessica's eyes.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You're Jessica's father.””
Samuel nodded.
“And Sarah's husband.””
Another nod.
“You killed my father.””
Samuel's expression changed.
“No.””
“Then why did Helen say he was poisoned?””
“Because she doesn't know everything.””
I stepped forward.
“What happened to my husband?””
Samuel looked at me.
“Your husband discovered that Richard had been stealing from him.””
“I know.””
“He confronted Richard.””
“I know.””
“He also discovered Sarah was involved.””
I frowned.
“What did Sarah do?””
“She wasn't involved voluntarily.””
Samuel's voice became bitter.
“She was threatened.””
“By Richard?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did my husband think she was dangerous?””
“Because Richard made him believe she was.””
Daniel stared at him.
“So Richard manipulated Dad.””
“Yes.””
“Then who poisoned him?””
Samuel looked at me.
“Your husband poisoned himself.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“That makes no sense.””
“He knew Richard was coming for him.””
“So?””
“He took poison intentionally.””
I shook my head.
“My husband would never do that.””
“He did.””
“Why?””
“To make everyone believe he had a heart attack.””
Daniel stared.
“Why would he fake his own death?””
Samuel's expression darkened.
“Because he needed to disappear.””
I felt dizzy.
“He wasn't dead?””
“He survived the initial poisoning.””
My hand flew to my mouth.
“What?””
Samuel nodded.
“The hospital declared him dead because he wanted the world to believe it.””
Daniel stepped backward.
“Then where did he go?””
Samuel looked at the floor.
“He went into hiding.””
“Why?””
“To protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Thirty years.””
“Yes.””
“Thirty years I mourned him.””
Samuel said nothing.
“I raised Daniel alone.””
“I know.””
“You watched?””
“Yes.””
“Then you knew what Richard did to us.””
“Yes.””
I slapped him.
The sound echoed through the room.
Samuel didn't react.
“You let me believe my husband was dead.””
“Yes.””
“You let my son believe his father abandoned him.””
“I was protecting him.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice broke.
“Everyone says they were protecting Daniel while destroying his life.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Where is my father?””
Samuel looked at him.
“He died eight years ago.””
The room became silent.
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“He was alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“Portugal.””
Daniel's mouth trembled.
“Did he ever try to contact us?””
“Yes.””
I stared at Samuel.
“When?””
“Many times.””
“Then why didn't I hear from him?””
Samuel looked away.
“Richard intercepted the letters.””
Daniel's fists clenched.
“So all this time…”
“He believed you were safer without him.””
Daniel turned away.
I put my hand on his back.
Then Samuel opened a drawer.
He removed a sealed envelope.
“This is what you came for.””
Daniel took it.
“The DNA results.””
“Yes.””
He opened the envelope.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he stopped.
I watched his face.
“Daniel?””
He looked at me.
“I don't understand.””
“What does it say?””
He handed me the paper.
I read the first line.
*PATERNITY: 99.98%*
My husband's name.
Then the mother's name.
My name.
I stared.
“It says I'm your biological mother.””
Daniel nodded.
“So Evelyn…”
“Is Sarah's daughter.””
“Then why did Richard say otherwise?””
Samuel answered.
“Because the original results were switched.””
I looked at the document.
“By Richard?””
“No.””
Samuel's voice was quiet.
“By me.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You?””
“I changed the samples.””
“Why?””
“Because your father asked me to.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Why would Dad ask you to falsify a DNA test proving I was his son?””
Samuel looked at me.
“Because the test wasn't about you.””
“What?””
“It was about Evelyn.””
I felt cold.
Samuel explained.
“Your father had discovered Sarah's daughter was alive.””
“Evelyn.””
“Yes.””
“He wanted to find her.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed she was in danger.””
Daniel looked at the photograph of Evelyn.
“From Richard?””
Samuel nodded.
“Richard had been searching for her for years.””
“Why?””
“Because Evelyn inherited something.””
“What?””
Samuel hesitated.
“The original company records.””
Daniel frowned.
“That's what Richard wanted.””
“Yes.””
“So Evelyn had the evidence.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Jessica marry me?””
Samuel's expression hardened.
“Because Jessica was trying to find Evelyn.””
Daniel went silent.
“And when she couldn't,” Samuel continued, “she decided to use you.””
I looked at him.
“What was Jessica supposed to do?””
“Find the records.””
“And the attack?””
“Part of the plan.””
“And Richard?””
“He was using Jessica.””
Daniel stared at the floor.
“So everyone betrayed everyone.””
Samuel shook his head.
“Not everyone.””
He looked at me.
“Your husband never betrayed you.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“Then why did he leave?””
Samuel reached into the drawer again.
He removed a second envelope.
“This was delivered to me the day he died.””
I opened it.
My husband's handwriting appeared again.
Margaret,
If Daniel ever learns the truth, tell him this.
I couldn't continue.
Daniel took the letter from me.
He read aloud.
I didn't leave because I stopped loving you.
His voice cracked.
I left because the people around us were willing to kill for money.
He swallowed.
And there is one person I trusted more than anyone.
Daniel looked up.
“Who?””
Samuel pointed toward the window.
A woman stood outside.
Evelyn.
But she wasn't alone.
Jessica stood beside her.
And behind them was Richard.
Daniel rushed toward the window.
Richard raised something in his hand.
A gun.
My heart stopped.
Then Richard shouted through the glass:
“Daniel! Ask your mother why your father really disappeared!””
Daniel stared at me.
Richard smiled.
“Ask her what happened the night he came home and told her he was leaving.””
I shook my head.
“That isn't true.””
Richard's voice rose.
“She knows!””
Daniel turned toward me.
“Mom?””
I couldn't speak.
Because suddenly I remembered.
The night my husband disappeared.
The note he left.
The sentence I had never understood.
Forgive me for what you will learn about me.
I had always thought it meant the financial secrets.
But now I understood.
There was something else.
Something I had buried so deeply that even I had stopped remembering it.
I looked at Daniel.
And whispered:
“Your father didn't leave me.””
Richard smiled.
“He was running from you.””
May you like
Daniel's face went pale.
Then a gunshot shattered the window.
