Chapter 6: The Woman in the Photograph

For several seconds, I couldn't understand the words.

“Your real mother died the night your father did.””

Daniel stared at Evelyn.

Then at me.

Then back at Evelyn.

“What did you say?””

Evelyn's expression was cold.

“I said Margaret isn't your biological mother.””

I felt as though the floor had moved beneath my feet.

Daniel shook his head.

“That's impossible.””

Evelyn opened the folder.

“There are documents.””

She removed a birth certificate.

“Your father's name is here.””

Daniel took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he stopped.

The mother's name was not mine.

I had known, of course, that I wasn't Daniel's biological mother.

But not because there was a secret.

Not because of some hidden woman.

I had given birth to Daniel.

I had been there from the moment they placed him in my arms.

I was his mother.

Whatever Evelyn was trying to suggest was nonsense.

I stepped forward.

“That's not my son's birth certificate.””

Evelyn smiled.

“Yes, it is.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Mom?””

I reached for his hand.

“Daniel, she's lying.””

Evelyn laughed.

“Am I?””

She pulled out another document.

“This is the hospital record.””

I looked at it.

The date was correct.

The hospital was correct.

My name was there.

But underneath it was another name.

*Evelyn Carter.*

Daniel's face went blank.

“What is this?””

Evelyn said, “The truth.””

“No.””

Daniel dropped the papers.

“You're trying to confuse me.””

“Ask Margaret.””

He looked at me.

I couldn't speak.

Because there was something I had never told him.

Something I had buried for thirty years.

Not because I was ashamed.

Because I was terrified.

Daniel had been born with complications.

He had spent his first week in intensive care.

A nurse had taken him away after delivery.

For hours, I had been told he was too fragile for me to hold.

When they finally brought him back, there had been a band around his wrist.

I had noticed the name.

Daniel Carter.

Everything had been normal.

Or so I thought.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Where did you get these?””

“My mother.””

“Who was your mother?””

Evelyn's expression softened for the first time.

“Her name was Sarah.””

The name struck me.

Sarah.

I remembered it.

Not from my life.

From my husband's old paperwork.

A woman he'd once mentioned before we married.

A college friend.

A woman he claimed had moved away.

I looked at Richard.

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Richard remained silent.

Daniel turned on him.

“You knew?””

Richard finally said, “Not everything.””

“That means yes.””

“I suspected.””

Daniel stepped toward him.

“Did my father know?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before you were born.””

I felt dizzy.

“Then why didn't he tell me?””

Richard's face tightened.

“Because the hospital made a mistake.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What mistake?””

Richard took a breath.

“Two babies were born that night.””

Evelyn nodded.

“My mother gave birth to me.””

I stared at her.

“And I gave birth to Daniel.””

Evelyn's voice was calm.

“That's what everyone believed.””

Richard continued.

“There was a mix-up during an emergency evacuation.””

My heart hammered.

“Are you saying they switched us?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at me.

I could see the terror in his eyes.

“Mom…”

I reached for him.

He didn't move away.

“I'm your mother.””

“I know.””

“You know that.””

“Yes.””

“Whatever papers they show you, whatever anyone says, I raised you.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“You're the one who held me.””

“Yes.””

“You're the one who stayed when Dad was gone.””

“Yes.””

“You're my mother.””

I nodded.

Then Evelyn said quietly, “And that's exactly why you were useful.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Your father knew about the hospital mistake.””

Richard's face went pale.

“And he spent years hiding it.””

“Why?””

“Because he discovered something worse.””

She opened another file.

Inside was a photograph.

Two newborn babies.

Two mothers.

Two hospital bracelets.

I stared at one bracelet.

The name was blurred.

But the number wasn't.

Daniel's eyes widened.

“That number…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

“I've seen it.””

“Where?””

“In Dad's files.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Because your father spent years trying to prove which baby belonged to which mother.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Did he figure it out?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“He ordered a DNA test.””

Silence.

My heartbeat seemed to fill the entire garage.

Daniel whispered, “When?””

“Two days before he died.””

I looked at Richard.

“Who was my son?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“The results disappeared.””

Evelyn smiled.

“Not disappeared.””

She opened the final page.

“Destroyed.””

Daniel stared.

“By who?””

Evelyn looked at Jessica.

Jessica's face had gone white.

Daniel followed her gaze.

“You destroyed them?””

Jessica shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Jessica backed away.

“I didn't know about the DNA test.””

Evelyn snapped, “You knew enough.””

“I swear I didn't.””

“You lied to me.””

“I was trying to get the inheritance!””

Daniel stared at her.

“So you admit it.””

Jessica covered her mouth.

She realized too late.

Daniel took a step backward.

“You never loved me.””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears.

“I did.””

“No.””

“I did!””

“You staged an attack on my mother.””

“I was scared.””

“You lied to me.””

“I had no choice.””

“You chose money.””

Jessica shook her head.

“No. I chose survival.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That's what you call this?””

Then his phone buzzed.

Everyone went silent.

He looked at the screen.

A new video had arrived.

The sender was unknown.

Daniel pressed play.

The screen showed a hospital hallway.

The date was thirty years earlier.

A younger version of my husband stood beside a nurse.

I recognized the hallway.

I recognized his face.

But then I heard his voice.

“Take the boy to Sarah.””

The nurse hesitated.

“What about the other baby?””

My husband's voice came back.

“Leave her with Margaret.””

I stopped breathing.

Daniel stared at me.

The video continued.

My husband turned toward the camera.

His face was filled with fear.

“If Margaret ever finds out, she'll hate me.””

The nurse asked, “What about the DNA results?””

My husband looked toward the hallway.

“Destroy them.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked at me.

His voice was barely audible.

“Mom…”

I reached for him.

This time, he stepped into my arms.

I held him like I had thirty years ago.

But over his shoulder, I saw Evelyn smiling.

Not because she had won.

Because she knew something we didn't.

Daniel pulled away.

“Why are you smiling?””

Evelyn closed the folder.

“Because you still don't understand.””

“Understand what?””

She looked at me.

“Your husband didn't switch the babies.””

I felt my blood run cold.

Evelyn whispered:

“He switched the DNA results.””

Then she turned toward Jessica.

“And the woman he was protecting wasn't you, Margaret.””

Jessica suddenly began crying.

May you like

Evelyn's voice dropped to a whisper.

“She was Jessica's mother.””
