Chapter 3: The Name in the Recording
“Tell me what happened in 2019.””
My voice sounded unfamiliar in the bridal suite.
Daniel stood beside the vanity, staring at the message.
The tiny camera above the mirror had stopped blinking.
But somehow, I had the feeling someone was still watching.
Daniel finally looked at me.
“I don't know.””
“That's not true.””
“I said I don't know.””
“You knew the second you saw that year.””
He turned away.
“Mom, please.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You accused me yesterday. You told me to leave your wedding. You believed Jessica over me.””
“I know.””
“And now someone sends us a message about the year your father died, and you suddenly can't speak?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“There are things about Dad's death I've never told you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What things?””
Before he could answer, the bridal suite door unlocked.
A security guard rushed in.
“Mr. Carter?””
Daniel turned.
“Yes.””
“Are you both all right?””
“We're fine.””
The guard looked at the camera above the mirror.
“That's not supposed to be there.””
“Who installed it?”” Daniel asked.
“I don't know.””
“Who has access to this room?””
“Venue staff, the wedding planner, bride and groom…”
“Jessica?””
“Yes.””
Daniel's voice became sharper.
“And anyone else?””
The guard hesitated.
“The photographer.””
“Who?””
“Ethan Cole.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Do you know him?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Jessica hired the photography company.””
The guard checked his radio.
“Mr. Cole left the venue last night.””
“When?””
“About twenty minutes after the ceremony was canceled.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Canceled?””
The guard looked confused.
“Your wedding didn't happen, did it?””
Daniel and I exchanged a look.
“No,” Daniel said.
The guard nodded.
“Right. Sorry.””
He left.
Daniel immediately pulled out his phone.
“I need to find the camera footage.””
“We already have it.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“We have the footage Jessica wanted us to see.””
“What do you mean?””
“She knew there was a camera.””
I stared at him.
“How?””
“Look at the recording.””
He opened the video again.
We watched Jessica after I left.
She had smiled at the camera.
Not accidentally.
Not vaguely.
Directly.
“She knew,” Daniel said.
“And she wanted someone to see it.””
“Exactly.””
I frowned.
“Then why would she expose herself?””
Daniel froze.
The question settled between us.
Maybe she hadn't.
Maybe the footage had been altered.
Maybe the person who sent it wanted us to find it.
Daniel fast-forwarded through the recording.
Jessica was still sitting at the vanity.
Then the second phone rang.
She answered.
We heard a man's voice.
Distorted.
Low.
“Is it done?””
Jessica smiled.
“Yes.””
“Did he believe you?””
“Completely.””
“And his mother?””
“She's finished.””
I felt my heart pounding.
Then Jessica said something that made Daniel stop the video.
“I told you, Daniel will never question me after what happened to his father.””
Daniel's face drained of color.
He replayed it.
Again.
“I told you, Daniel will never question me after what happened to his father.””
He stared at the screen.
I whispered, “What does she mean?””
He shook his head.
“I don't know.””
“Daniel.””
“I don't know!””
His voice cracked.
Then he sank into the velvet chair.
For the first time since the previous afternoon, my son looked less like a groom and more like the little boy I remembered.
I sat beside him.
“Tell me.””
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“Dad didn't die the way everyone thinks.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you saying?””
“The official story was a heart attack.””
“Yes.””
“He had chest pain. He collapsed at work. The hospital said it was cardiac arrest.””
“I was there.””
“I know.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I found his old laptop three months after he died.””
My throat tightened.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because there was a file.””
“What file?””
“A video.””
The room suddenly felt colder.
Daniel continued.
“It was recorded the night before he died.””
“By whom?””
“I don't know.””
“What was on it?””
He hesitated.
“Dad was arguing with someone.””
“Who?””
“I couldn't see his face.””
“Then how do you know it matters?””
“Because Dad said a name.””
I waited.
Daniel looked toward the mirror.
“Jessica.””
I couldn't speak.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then I whispered, “That's impossible.””
“I know.””
“Jessica was barely twenty-two then.””
“I know.””
“She didn't even know your father.””
“She said she didn't.””
“Daniel…”
“I believed her.””
He looked down at his hands.
“Until yesterday.””
My phone buzzed.
Another unknown message.
This time, there was an attachment.
A video.
Daniel stared at it.
“Don't open it,” he said.
“Why?””
“Because whoever sent it wants us to.””
“Maybe that's exactly what we need.””
He looked at me.
I pressed play.
The screen showed a dimly lit parking garage.
A man stood beside a black sedan.
I couldn't see his face.
But I recognized the voice.
Daniel heard it too.
His lips parted.
“No.””
The man on the recording said:
“Your father should have kept his mouth shut.””
Then another voice answered.
A woman's voice.
Jessica.
“That's why I made sure he didn't.””
Daniel shot to his feet.
“No.””
The video continued.
Jessica stepped into the light.
She was younger.
But unmistakable.
She was holding hands with someone.
Someone who turned toward the camera.
Daniel stumbled backward.
“That's…”
I grabbed his arm.
“Who is it?””
He couldn't answer.
The man looked directly at the camera.
And I recognized him too.
My blood ran cold.
Because he was not a stranger.
He was not some mysterious photographer.
He was someone who had stood beside me at my husband's funeral.
Someone who had hugged my son.
Someone who had spent years telling us how sorry he was for our loss.
Daniel whispered his name.
Then the recording ended.
He looked at me, horrified.
“Mom…”
“What?””
“That man was at my wedding yesterday.””
A knock sounded on the bridal suite door.
Three slow knocks.
Daniel and I stared at each other.
Then a familiar voice came from the other side.
“Daniel? It's me.””
Daniel's face went completely white.
It was the voice of the man from the recording.
The man who had known Jessica.
The man who had been connected to his father's death.

And when Daniel finally opened the door, the first thing that man said was—
“Your mother was never supposed to see that video.””
