Chapter 8: The Birthday Girl Wasn't Who We Thought

I stared at the phone.

"Explain what you mean.""

Marcus Bell exhaled.

"Not over the phone.""

I looked at Detective Morgan.

She motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

I did.

"Mr. Bell, this is Detective Morgan. You're speaking to an officer of the law. You need to explain your statement.""

There was a pause.

Then Marcus laughed nervously.

"Detective, I think you'll find this conversation very interesting.""

"Where are you?""

"I'll meet you somewhere public.""

"No. You're going to tell us what you know now.""

Marcus sighed.

"Vanessa had a plan. She wanted to keep one of Sarah's babies and make the other disappear. But there was a complication.""

"What complication?"" I demanded.

"Madison.""

I gripped the phone.

"What about her?""

"Vanessa had already given birth to Madison. She was afraid that if anyone discovered she had another baby at the same time as Sarah's twins, people would ask questions.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"So what did she do?""

"She switched the records.""

Detective Morgan leaned closer.

"Be specific.""

Marcus hesitated.

"Vanessa used her connections at the hospital to change the identification records. One of Sarah's twins was registered under Vanessa's name. The other was listed as deceased.""

I stared at the floor.

"And Madison?""

"Madison was recorded as Vanessa's biological daughter. But she wasn't.""

My mouth went dry.

"Are you saying Madison is Sarah's daughter?""

"Yes.""

"And the other twin?""

"Emma.""

I closed my eyes.

Two babies.

Two identities.

One woman who had decided she could choose which children belonged to whom.

"Where is Sarah's second baby?""

Marcus hesitated.

"She's been with Vanessa all these years.""

I looked toward Detective Morgan.

"Then why did Vanessa tell everyone she was her biological daughter?""

"Because she needed a story that would explain why the dates matched.""

I felt sick.

"How did you know all this?""

Marcus went quiet.

Then he answered.

"Because I helped her.""

Detective Morgan immediately straightened.

"You're admitting involvement?""

"I'm admitting I know what happened.""

"Did you falsify medical records?""

"I didn't do the hospital paperwork.""

"Did you assist Vanessa in obtaining fraudulent guardianship?""

Marcus sighed.

"I helped with the financial documents.""

I felt rage building.

"You helped her steal my children?""

"Daniel, I didn't know the whole situation at first.""

"You were sleeping with my wife while she locked my daughter in a bedroom!""

Marcus said nothing.

I looked at the detective.

She motioned for me to continue.

"Why did you contact me?""

Marcus hesitated.

"Because Vanessa is planning to leave.""

"When?""

"Tonight.""

My blood ran cold.

"Where is she going?""

"I don't know exactly. But she's been preparing a passport for Madison.""

Detective Morgan exchanged a look with the officer.

"Where are you now, Mr. Bell?""

"At my apartment.""

"Stay there. Officers will be arriving shortly.""

Marcus panicked.

"Wait. I need protection.""

"From whom?""

"Vanessa.""

The call ended.

Detective Morgan immediately contacted the local police department.

Within minutes, officers were dispatched to Marcus's apartment and our house.

My mother sat down heavily.

"She raised Madison as her own.""

I looked at her.

"She stole Madison from Sarah.""

My mother began crying again.

"And she made us believe the other baby had died.""

I picked up the photograph of the twins.

There were two tiny faces.

Two little girls.

I couldn't stop thinking about the day Vanessa had brought Madison into our home.

I had held her.

I'd bought her presents.

I'd taken her to the park.

I'd watched her blow out candles.

I'd even helped her with her first bicycle.

I had believed she was my stepdaughter.

Now I was learning that she might be my biological daughter.

I didn't know how to feel.

But I knew one thing.

Madison was innocent.

Just like Lily.

Just like Emma.

And she deserved the truth.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Detective Morgan.

Officers are at your residence. Vanessa is not there. Madison is missing.

I stood up.

"What?""

Detective Morgan looked at her phone.

"She left before officers arrived.""

My heart began racing.

"Where would she take Madison?""

"We're checking transportation records and known contacts.""

I looked at the photograph.

"She won't hurt her, will she?""

The detective held my gaze.

"We're treating this as an urgent child welfare situation.""

My phone rang again.

This time, it was Rachel.

Madison's biological mother—or at least, the woman I had always believed was her mother.

I answered.

"Rachel?""

Her voice was frantic.

"Daniel, where is Madison?""

I closed my eyes.

"I don't know.""

"Vanessa called me. She said she was taking Madison away because you were trying to steal her.""

"What?""

"She told me you were accusing her of kidnapping children. She said you were going to destroy Madison's life.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Rachel, listen to me. We need to find her.""

"Why?""

I hesitated.

Then I told her the truth.

"Because Madison may be Sarah's daughter.""

Silence.

"What?""

"The hospital records suggest Vanessa switched the babies' identities.""

Rachel made a strangled sound.

"That can't be true.""

"Rachel, I know this is difficult.""

"No. You don't understand.""

Her voice broke.

"I've been raising Madison since she was a baby.""

I felt a knot form in my chest.

"I know.""

"She calls me Mommy.""

"I know.""

"She has my mother's eyes. She has my father's smile. She knows every bedtime story I've ever told her.""

I didn't know what to say.

Rachel began sobbing.

"Are you telling me she isn't my daughter?""

I closed my eyes.

"I'm telling you we need to find her and establish the truth.""

She went silent.

Then she whispered:

"Vanessa told me something else.""

"What?""

"She said if anything happened to her, I should take care of Madison.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why would she say that?""

"Because she was afraid someone would discover what happened at the hospital.""

I looked at Detective Morgan.

Rachel continued.

"Daniel, I think Vanessa knew this day was coming.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did she ever leave anything with you?""

Rachel hesitated.

"Actually, yes.""

"What?""

"A small envelope. She gave it to me last year and told me not to open it unless something happened to her.""

"Do you still have it?""

"Yes.""

"What's inside?""

"I don't know. But she told me it contained proof of Madison's identity.""

I felt a chill run down my spine.

"Rachel, don't open it. Give it to the police.""

"Okay.""

I turned toward Detective Morgan.

"We need to get to Rachel's house.""

She nodded.

"We're going.""

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at Rachel's home.

She was waiting outside, holding a small white envelope.

Her hands trembled as she handed it to the detective.

Morgan opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph of a newborn baby.

On the back was a date.

And a handwritten note.

For the woman who will raise my daughter.

I stared at it.

There was something familiar about the handwriting.

Sarah's.

But beneath the photograph was another document.

A DNA test.

The names were partially covered by a folded page.

Detective Morgan unfolded it.

Her expression changed.

"Mr. Carter...""

I stepped closer.

"What?""

She turned the paper toward me.

The results showed a 99.99 percent probability of biological maternity between Sarah Mitchell and Madison.

A second test showed a 99.99 percent probability of paternity between me and the same child.

I stared at the numbers.

Madison was mine.

My daughter.

The little girl whose birthday cake I'd seen in the backyard.

The child Vanessa had raised while treating Lily and Emma as unwanted burdens.

I looked at Rachel.

She was crying silently.

"Does she know?"" I asked.

Rachel shook her head.

"Vanessa told her you were just Lily's father.""

I closed my eyes.

Then Rachel said something else.

"There's a note from Sarah.""

The detective removed a folded sheet from the envelope.

She read the first few lines.

Then stopped.

"What's wrong?"" I asked.

Morgan looked at me.

"This letter suggests Sarah knew Vanessa had taken the wrong baby.""

I stared at her.

"Wrong baby?""

She nodded slowly.

"Sarah believed the baby Vanessa took was Emma.""

I frowned.

"But Emma was the one who was hidden.""

The detective looked down at the DNA report.

Then back at the letter.

"According to Sarah, the hospital records may have been deliberately switched before the babies were discharged.""

My stomach dropped.

"Then how do we know which child is which?""

"We need independent DNA testing on all three girls.""

I looked at the detective.

"All three?""

She nodded.

"Emma, Madison, and Lily.""

I frowned.

"Lily? Why Lily?""

Morgan hesitated.

"Because there is one more document in this envelope.""

She handed it to me.

It was a hospital birth record.

My name was listed as the father.

Vanessa's name was listed as the mother.

And beneath it was a note written in red ink.

*Biological relationship disputed. Confirm with neonatal records.*

I stared at the page.

"Are you telling me Lily might not be my biological daughter?""

Detective Morgan didn't answer.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A little girl's voice came through.

"Daddy?""

My heart stopped.

"Madison?""

She began crying.

"Please come get me.""

I stood up.

"Where are you, sweetheart?""

"Mommy Vanessa says we're going away.""

I heard a car door slam.

Then Vanessa's voice.

"Give me that phone!""

The call disconnected.

I looked at Detective Morgan.

"She has Madison.""

The detective was already moving.

"Get the location from the call records. Now.""

May you like

And as we rushed toward the police vehicle, I realized Vanessa wasn't simply running from the truth.

She was trying to take the last piece of her carefully constructed lie with her.
