Chapter 6: The Two-Million-Dollar Secret

I spent the next hour staring at the insurance application.

Two million dollars.

My name.

My signature.

Vanessa listed as the sole beneficiary.

The detective had placed the document inside a clear evidence sleeve.

I couldn't stop looking at it.

"How did she get this?""

Detective Morgan sat opposite me in the hospital consultation room.

"That's one of the questions we're investigating.""

"I never applied for life insurance.""

"Did you sign any blank documents recently?""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Vanessa once asked me to sign several papers for our mortgage renewal. She said our financial adviser needed them.""

"When?""

"About six weeks ago.""

"Did you read them?""

I looked down.

"No.""

The detective nodded.

"That may be relevant.""

I felt anger rise.

"Are you saying she forged an insurance application?""

"I'm saying we need to establish how the application was submitted and whether your signature was obtained through deception.""

I stared at the photograph again.

"Why would she need two million dollars?""

Detective Morgan didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she placed another document on the table.

"This was found in a locked drawer in the bedroom.""

It was a printed email conversation.

The first message was from Vanessa.

I need to know whether the policy can be approved without Daniel attending another appointment.

The reply came from an insurance representative.

We will need confirmation of identity and the required medical declarations.

Vanessa's response was dated six weeks earlier.

I can arrange the documents. He trusts me with these things.

I felt physically sick.

The detective turned the page.

There were more messages.

One of them made my blood run cold.

Once everything is finalized, the household will be financially secure. I won't have to depend on him anymore.

I looked up.

"She wrote this?""

"Yes.""

"Who was she sending it to?""

"We're still identifying the recipient.""

I leaned back.

For months, Vanessa had told me our marriage was improving.

She had become affectionate.

She brought me coffee in bed.

She asked about my work.

She even suggested that we take a second honeymoon.

Now every memory seemed contaminated.

I remembered her asking whether my company provided additional life insurance.

I remembered her joking that I was worth more dead than alive.

At the time, I'd laughed.

Now I couldn't breathe.

Detective Morgan gathered the documents.

"Mr. Carter, I need you to be careful about any communication with your wife. Don't confront her privately or attempt to retrieve evidence yourself.""

I nodded.

"Can I see my daughters?""

"Of course.""

When I returned to the children's room, Lily was asleep.

Emma was sitting beside her, gently stroking the stuffed rabbit.

I sat beside them.

"How are you feeling?""

Emma looked at me.

"Better.""

"Good.""

She studied my face.

"Are you sad?""

I tried to smile.

"A little.""

"Because of me?""

I immediately shook my head.

"No, sweetheart. Never because of you.""

She looked toward Lily.

"Is she going to stay with us?""

I glanced at my sleeping daughter.

"If that's what she wants, we'll make sure you can be together.""

Emma smiled.

Then she leaned closer.

"Can I tell you something?""

"Anything.""

"Mommy Vanessa said I wasn't allowed to tell you about the room.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Why?""

"She said you would send me away.""

I took her hand.

"That's not true.""

"She said you already had a real daughter.""

I looked at Lily.

Then back at Emma.

"You are both my real daughters.""

Emma's lower lip trembled.

"Even if I came later?""

I nodded.

"Especially then.""

She leaned against my arm.

I stayed beside her until she fell asleep.

But the day wasn't finished.

At around seven that evening, Detective Morgan returned.

This time, she wasn't alone.

A man in a dark suit accompanied her.

"Mr. Carter, this is our financial crimes investigator, Officer Reed.""

I stood.

"What's happened?""

Detective Morgan placed a tablet on the table.

"We identified the person Vanessa was communicating with.""

She turned the screen toward me.

An email address.

A name.

*Marcus Bell.*

I frowned.

"Who is that?""

Officer Reed answered.

"He's a financial adviser who previously worked with your wife.""

I shook my head.

"I've never heard of him.""

"According to our preliminary findings, he's been helping Vanessa move money between several accounts.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"How much money?""

"We're still calculating the full amount. But we've identified transfers totaling approximately $38,000.""

I stared at him.

"From where?""

"Your joint household account.""

I sat down.

The birthday party.

The designer clothes.

The expensive jewelry.

The constant requests for additional money.

It had all been coming from our household account.

"Was that money used for Emma?""

Officer Reed shook his head.

"We haven't found evidence of that.""

Detective Morgan placed another photograph on the table.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a hotel beside a man.

The man had one hand resting on her waist.

I recognized him immediately.

Marcus Bell.

I looked at the date.

Three weeks earlier.

The same week Vanessa had told me she was attending a weekend retreat with friends.

I stared at the photograph.

"Was she having an affair?""

Detective Morgan chose her words carefully.

"We're investigating the relationship between them. But there's something else you should know.""

She enlarged the photograph.

The man was holding a small envelope.

Vanessa was smiling.

Then I noticed the location.

A hotel near the insurance company's main office.

"Why were they there?""

"We believe they met to discuss the policy.""

My stomach twisted.

"She planned this with him?""

"We don't know the full extent of his involvement yet.""

I stood up and walked to the window.

Outside, headlights moved through the hospital parking lot.

I had spent years believing that working hard was enough.

That if I provided a comfortable home, paid the bills, and loved my family, everything would be fine.

I'd trusted Vanessa with my finances.

With my children.

With my life.

And she had used that trust to create something monstrous.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

The first line made my blood run cold.

Daniel, you need to stop talking to the police.

A second message arrived.

You have no idea what Sarah did.

Then a third.

If you want to know why Emma was really sent to your house, ask your mother about the night she was born.

I stared at the screen.

Detective Morgan noticed my expression.

"What is it?""

I handed her the phone.

She read the messages carefully.

"Do you recognize the number?""

"No.""

"Don't reply.""

She photographed the screen.

I looked at the final message again.

Ask your mother.

For the first time, I wondered whether Vanessa had been telling the truth about something.

Had my mother known about Emma?

Had she known Sarah was pregnant?

And why had nobody told me?

I stepped into the hallway and called my mother.

She answered after the second ring.

"Daniel? Is everything okay?""

I couldn't bring myself to pretend.

"Mom, I need to ask you something.""

Her voice immediately changed.

"What's happened?""

"Did you know Sarah had a baby?""

Silence.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Silence.

Then my mother whispered:

"Oh, Daniel.""

My stomach dropped.

"Mom?""

She began crying.

"I was hoping you'd never have to find out this way.""

I closed my eyes.

"Find out what?""

She took a shaky breath.

Then she said something that made me grip the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.

"Sarah didn't just have your daughter, Daniel.""

A pause.

"She gave birth to twins.""

I couldn't speak.

"Twins?""

"Yes.""

"Where is the other baby?""

My mother began sobbing.

And then she whispered:

"Vanessa took one of them.""

I stared at the hospital wall.

"What?""

My mother continued.

"She told us the baby had died. She showed us paperwork. We believed her.""

I felt the world disappear beneath my feet.

I looked through the glass at Lily and Emma.

Two little girls.

One with my eyes.

One with Sarah's smile.

And somewhere in the middle of this nightmare was another child whose existence I had never known.

"Mom," I whispered, "where is my other daughter?""

My mother didn't answer.

Instead, she said:

May you like

"Daniel, you need to come home. There's something in your father's old safe that you need to see.""

And before I could ask another question, the call disconnected.
