Chapter 3: The Child Behind the Locked Door

I didn't remember deciding to break the door open.

One moment I was standing in the hallway, listening to a child begging for help.

The next, I was driving my shoulder into the wood.

The first impact shook the frame.

The second cracked something near the lock.

Vanessa screamed behind me.

"Daniel! Stop!""

I hit it a third time.

The deadbolt tore loose.

The door swung inward.

And the smell hit me.

Stale air.

Sweat.

Old food.

A sour odor that made my stomach turn.

I stepped inside.

The curtains were closed.

A single lamp sat on a dusty dresser.

There was a thin mattress on the floor, a plastic bucket in the corner, and several empty water bottles scattered near the wall.

On the mattress sat a little girl.

She couldn't have been more than six.

Her brown hair was tangled, her cheeks were streaked with tears, and she was wearing a yellow T-shirt that hung loosely from her shoulders.

She stared at me as if she couldn't believe I was real.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then she scrambled off the mattress.

"Please don't let her take me back!""

I dropped to my knees.

"Hey, sweetheart. It's okay. I'm Daniel.""

She backed away.

"Are you going to tell her?""

"No.""

"She said nobody would believe me.""

I swallowed hard.

"What's your name?""

The girl looked toward the doorway.

Then she whispered:

"Emma.""

Behind me, Vanessa was shouting.

"Emma! Get away from him!""

The little girl immediately covered her head.

I stood up.

"Don't you dare come near her.""

Vanessa stopped at the doorway.

Her face had gone completely white.

Madison stood behind her, clutching a pink birthday gift bag.

Rachel was beside the kitchen entrance, one hand covering her mouth.

"What is going on?"" Rachel whispered.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Who is Emma?""

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"She's a friend's daughter. She's visiting.""

I looked around the room.

At the mattress.

The empty bottles.

The plastic bucket.

"Visiting?""

Vanessa nodded quickly.

"She has behavioral problems. Her mother asked me to help for a few days.""

Emma shook her head.

"No.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Emma, stop.""

The girl began crying.

"She said my mommy went away because I was bad.""

I felt something inside me break.

I crouched again.

"Emma, when did you last see your mother?""

"Last week.""

"Do you know where she is?""

Emma shook her head.

"She said Mommy had to go to the hospital. But then she said Mommy didn't want me anymore.""

Vanessa stepped into the room.

"That's enough!""

I stood between them.

"Don't move.""

She looked at me with furious eyes.

"You don't understand the situation.""

"Then explain it.""

"Emma's mother is unstable. She asked me to take care of her.""

"By locking her in a room?""

"She needs boundaries.""

I looked at the mattress.

There was a small plate beside it.

On the plate were two dry crackers and a piece of apple that had turned brown.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Is this what you've been feeding her?""

"She refuses proper meals.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"She's a child!""

"And I have been dealing with this alone!""

Her voice cracked, but there was no remorse in it.

Only anger.

I took out my phone.

Vanessa noticed immediately.

"What are you doing?""

"Calling the police.""

Her face changed.

"Daniel, don't be stupid.""

I dialed emergency services.

"Don't you dare," she hissed.

I raised my hand to silence her.

When the operator answered, I spoke clearly.

"My name is Daniel Carter. I'm at my home. I've discovered two young children have been deprived of food and one has been kept locked inside a bedroom. I need police and medical assistance immediately.""

Vanessa lunged toward the phone.

I stepped back.

"Don't touch me.""

She stared at me.

Then she did something I would never forget.

She turned toward Lily.

"Look what you've done!""

My daughter shrank against the wall.

"Your father is ruining everything because you couldn't follow simple rules!""

I moved between them.

"Don't speak to my daughter.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You think you're some perfect father? You're never here! Who handles the children when you're working?""

I looked at Lily.

Then at Emma.

Then back at Vanessa.

"Apparently, nobody.""

Her expression hardened.

"You have no idea what I've sacrificed for this family.""

I almost laughed.

"What sacrifice?""

She gestured toward the room.

"I've been trying to make this household function!""

I pointed at the mattress.

"Is that what you call functioning?""

Before she could answer, Rachel stepped into the hallway.

"Vanessa, what is this?""

Vanessa turned toward her.

"Rachel, please. Don't get involved.""

Rachel stared at Emma.

Then she looked at Madison.

"Sweetheart, did you know about this?""

Madison lowered her eyes.

Vanessa immediately grabbed her daughter's shoulder.

"Madison doesn't know anything.""

But Madison suddenly spoke.

"Mommy said Emma was playing a game.""

Vanessa froze.

Madison continued, her little voice trembling.

"She said Emma was pretending to be a prisoner. But Emma cried when the door closed.""

Rachel looked horrified.

"Vanessa...""

"Stop it!"" Vanessa shouted.

Madison began crying.

I moved toward Emma.

"Can you walk, sweetheart?""

She nodded.

I took off my jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.

She was trembling.

When I lifted her, she clung to my neck with surprising strength.

"Please don't put me back.""

"I won't.""

"Promise?""

I looked into her frightened eyes.

"I promise.""

A few minutes later, the first police officers arrived.

Two uniformed officers entered the hallway while a paramedic followed with a medical bag.

Vanessa immediately changed her expression.

She began crying.

"Officer, thank goodness. My husband has completely lost control. He's been frightening the children.""

One officer looked at the broken door.

Then at the mattress.

Then at the little girl in my arms.

"Ma'am, step aside.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"This is a misunderstanding.""

The paramedic approached Emma.

"Hello, sweetheart. I'm going to check you, okay?""

Emma clung tighter to me.

"Don't let her take me.""

The paramedic exchanged a look with the officer.

"Nobody is taking you anywhere right now.""

Another officer approached Lily.

"Can I ask you a few questions, honey?""

Lily looked at me.

I nodded.

"It's okay, baby.""

The officer crouched.

"Can you tell me why you were in the kitchen?""

Lily looked down.

"I was hungry.""

"And where did you get your food?""

"From the trash.""

The officer's expression tightened.

"Why didn't you get food from the refrigerator?""

Lily hesitated.

"Mommy Vanessa said I wasn't allowed.""

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

"That's not true!""

The officer raised a hand.

"Ma'am, please.""

Lily continued.

"She said I had to stay in the little room if I didn't listen.""

I felt my throat close.

"How often?"" the officer asked gently.

Lily held up five fingers.

"Lots of times.""

The officer exchanged a glance with his partner.

Then he asked the question that made me realize this nightmare was much bigger than I had imagined.

"Mr. Carter, do you know this little girl?""

I shook my head.

"Emma? No. I've never seen her before today.""

He nodded slowly.

"Then there's something you need to know.""

He looked toward Vanessa.

"According to the information we've just received, Emma was reported missing by her biological mother four days ago.""

Vanessa's crying stopped.

Completely.

The officer continued.

"And the person who reported knowing where she was...""

He paused.

Then looked directly at my wife.

"...was Vanessa.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then the second officer walked toward us, holding a small plastic folder he'd found inside the locked bedroom.

"Mr. Carter, we found something else.""

He opened it.

Inside were several photographs.

A birth certificate.

And a handwritten document.

My eyes moved across the first page.

Then I saw the name.

*Emma Carter.*

My surname.

I looked up.

"Why does this child have my last name?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

And before either officer could explain, Emma lifted her head from my shoulder.

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

May you like

And whispered:

"She said you were my real daddy.""
