Chapter 9: The Double
We watched the footage three times.
Same man.
Same coat.
Same walk.
Same wedding ring.
My face.
My height.
My posture.
Everything.
But it wasn't me.
Maya sat on the edge of the desk, staring at the screen.
“How?””
Eric leaned closer.
“Deepfake?””
“Security footage isn't supposed to be that easy to fake,” I said.
“It isn't.””
Laura pointed at the timestamp.
“Look.””
I zoomed in.
The footage jumped from 8:09 to 8:10.
Then the man appeared.
At 8:11, Vanessa moved the camera.
At 8:12, the footage resumed.
Eric shook his head.
“This isn't a deepfake.””
“What is it?””
“A video injection.””
I stared at him.
“Meaning?””
“Someone replaced the real camera feed for three minutes.””
“Can they do that remotely?””
“Not without access.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“I don't know how.””
Eric pointed to the camera.
“Someone installed a secondary device.””
“Where?””
He walked into the living room.
He examined the camera.
Then the ceiling.
Then the bookshelf.
“Here.””
He pulled the frame away from the wall.
Behind it was a tiny black box.
Maya gasped.
“What is that?””
Eric unplugged it.
“A signal bridge.””
“Who installed it?””
“I did.””
I stared at him.
“You?””
“Years ago.””
“Why?””
“For backup security.””
“Then how did someone use it?””
He turned it over.
A serial number was written on the back.
His face changed.
“I didn't install this one.””
“What?””
“This is newer.””
He examined it again.
“Someone replaced mine.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did Nathan have access to this house?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Last month.””
“Why?””
“He said he needed to check the electrical panel.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course he did.””
Maya stood.
“Dad, if Nathan installed this, then he could make it look like you were here.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I looked at the photograph.
“To frame me.””
“For what?””
I didn't know.
Then I remembered the forged loan documents.
If someone could create footage showing me entering the house, they could create evidence that I stole the tuition money.
They could make it appear that I had transferred money.
They could make me responsible for everything.
But why?
My phone rang.
Richard Hale.
I answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
His breathing was heavy.
“I’m in the parking garage beneath my office.””
“Why?””
“Because two men followed me.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you forge the trust amendment?””
“No.””
“Did you access my computer?””
“No.””
“Someone used your credentials.””
“I know.””
“Who?””
Richard hesitated.
“Daniel, your mother didn't trust Nathan.””
“I know.””
“She didn't trust me either.””
“Then who did she trust?””
Silence.
“Richard?””
He whispered:
“Your father.””
My heart stopped.
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then what do you mean?””
“Your father wasn't the man you thought he was.””
I stared at the phone.
Laura stepped closer.
“What happened?””
I covered the microphone.
“Richard says my father was involved.””
Laura's face changed.
She took the phone from me.
“Richard, this is Laura.””
Silence.
Then Richard said,
“You're alive.””
“Yes.””
“I thought Nathan killed you.””
Laura looked at me.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“Your father created Blackridge.””
Nobody moved.
The name seemed to swallow the room.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I could barely breathe.
Richard said, “He created the lending network as a private investment operation. When it collapsed, Nathan inherited the debts.””
“But my father died before all this.””
“He didn't die because of the collapse.””
“What happened?””
“He disappeared.””
I stared at Laura.
She looked as shocked as I was.
Richard's voice lowered.
“Your mother found him years later.””
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
“Then how do you know?””
“Because she told me.””
I gripped the phone.
“What did she say?””
“She said your father was still alive.””
Maya whispered, “Dad…”
I felt the room spinning.
My father had been dead since I was twelve.
At least, that was what everyone had told me.
Richard continued:
“He was the one controlling the foundation.””
I couldn't speak.
“Richard, that's impossible.””
“I wish it were.””
“Where is he?””
“I don't know.””
“Then why are you telling me this?””
“Because he contacted me yesterday.””
My blood ran cold.
“Yesterday?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Richard's breathing became ragged.
“He said the money was never meant for Maya.””
I looked at the laptop.
“Then who?””
“For you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“He said your mother hid the money because she knew you'd eventually need it.””
“For what?””
Richard was silent.
“Richard!””
“For the debt your father left behind.””
I closed my eyes.
Two hundred thousand dollars.
Blackridge.
Nathan.
The foundation.
My identity.
Everything connected.
But one piece still didn't fit.
The tuition money.
“If my father wanted the money,” I said, “why involve Maya?””
Richard answered:
“Because Maya was the legal beneficiary.””
“So?””
“So whoever controlled her tuition account controlled the foundation's access.””
I understood.
Maya wasn't the target.
She was the key.
Someone had created the entire story around her because they needed her to appear financially irresponsible.
Then they could remove her from the trust.
I looked at the forged amendment.
“Who has access to Maya's university account?””
Richard said, “The trust administrator.””
“You?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
He whispered:
“Vanessa.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped backward.
“No.””
Richard continued:
“She was added six months ago.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never accessed it.””
“You don't remember?”” I asked.
“No.””
Richard said, “Daniel, there's something else.””
“What?””
“Your wife's signature appears on three transfers.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“That isn't possible.””
I looked at her.
“Show me.””
Richard sent the documents.
I opened them.
Three transfers.
Each authorized by Vanessa.
Each sent to Morris Educational Consulting.
Each one made months ago.
Vanessa stared.
“I didn't do that.””
“You're saying someone forged your signature too?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Laura.
“Then everyone is being impersonated.””
She nodded slowly.
“That's the pattern.””
I thought of the fake me on camera.
The forged signature.
The false trust amendment.
The stolen identity.
Suddenly, I remembered something.
The hidden recording.
My mother's warning.
*The person closest to your father is the one who has access to everything.*
Not closest to me.
Closest to my father.
I looked at Laura.
“Who was my father's closest business partner?””
She went silent.
“Laura.””
She looked at Vanessa.
Then me.
“Your father had one partner.””
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Your mother.””
I frowned.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“She wasn't just his wife.””
“What was she?””
Laura looked at me.
“She was the person who built the foundation.””
I stared.
“And Nathan?””
“He worked for her.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Laura stepped closer.
“Daniel, your mother didn't create the foundation to protect you from Nathan.””
“Then why?””
“To protect you from your father.””
The words hit harder than anything else that night.
“My father was the danger?””
“Yes.””
“And my mother knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she leave the money to me?””
“Because she wanted you to finish what she started.””
“What did she start?””
Laura looked at Maya.
“Getting your father arrested.””
The room went silent.
Then the front door opened.
A man walked inside.
No disguise.
No hesitation.
He was older now.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
A dark coat.
I stared at him.
Maya stepped behind me.
Vanessa began crying.
Laura whispered his name.
“Thomas.””
My father looked directly at me.
“Hello, Daniel.””
I couldn't breathe.
“You're dead.””
He gave a tired smile.
“That's what your mother wanted everyone to believe.””
I stared at him.
“You stole Maya's tuition money.””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at Laura.
Finally, his eyes settled on me.
“The person who stole it,” he said, “is the person you trusted to protect it.””
Vanessa collapsed into a chair.
My father continued:
“And she has been standing beside you from the beginning.””
He pointed at Vanessa.
But Vanessa looked up at him in horror.
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Not Vanessa.””
He pointed past her.
At Maya.
Everyone turned.
Maya's face went white.
May you like
Thomas said:
“Your daughter knows where the money is.””
