Chapter 2: The Person Under the Camera

Nobody moved.

Rain tapped against the windows.

The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen.

On my phone, Vanessa's face was frozen beneath the camera in the last clear frame.

She looked calm in the image.

Too calm.

I looked at the real woman standing in front of me.

She didn't look calm anymore.

“Why?”” I asked.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because you're misunderstanding what you saw.””

“You told me the camera malfunctioned.””

“It did.””

“You moved it.””

“I adjusted it.””

“You deliberately turned it toward the wall.””

“I was trying to fix it.””

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You were trying to fix it by making it impossible to see the room?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Maya stared at her.

“You did this?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“I didn't take your money.””

“That wasn't my question.””

“Maya—”

“Did you move the camera?””

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

“Yes.””

Maya's face fell.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Can we talk privately?””

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No. Not this time.””

She lowered her voice.

“I don't want Maya hearing this.””

I turned toward my daughter.

“Maya, go upstairs for a minute.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Maya.””

“No, Dad.””

Her voice trembled, but she didn't move.

“If she's going to accuse me, I want to hear it.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“I never accused you.””

“You asked if I checked my locker.””

“That was a reasonable question.””

“You asked if I misplaced it.””

“Because money doesn't just disappear.””

Maya looked at me.

“That's what you told me this morning.””

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

“This morning?””

Maya nodded.

“Vanessa said I probably spent it.””

Vanessa immediately said, “I did not say that.””

“You did.””

“I said you needed to be careful.””

“You said, ‘Maybe you should think about where you put it before blaming everyone else.’”

Silence.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you say that?””

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

I sat down.

“Start from the beginning.””

Vanessa remained standing.

“I was cleaning.””

“At eight eleven?””

“Yes.””

“Why were you cleaning under the camera?””

“I wasn't.””

I replayed the footage.

There she was.

Standing beneath it.

Her arm rising.

Her fingers touching the camera.

“Then what were you doing?””

She stared at the screen.

“I heard something.””

“What?””

“I thought someone had come through the front door.””

“The camera shows no one.””

“I know.””

“So why move it?””

She hesitated.

“I panicked.””

“About what?””

“I don't know.””

I leaned back.

“Vanessa, you need to understand something. Right now, the missing money is one problem. Lying to me about the camera is another.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I wasn't lying.””

“You said malfunction.””

“I didn't know how to explain it.””

“That's lying.””

Maya whispered, “Dad.””

I looked at her.

She was staring at the floor.

“What's wrong?””

She hesitated.

Then she reached into her backpack.

“I found this in my room.””

She handed me a folded piece of paper.

I opened it.

It was a printed tuition reminder.

At the bottom, someone had written in blue ink:

*PAYMENT DUE FRIDAY. NO EXCEPTIONS.*

The handwriting looked familiar.

I turned it over.

Nothing.

“Where did you find this?””

“Under my pillow.””

Vanessa stared at the paper.

“I didn't put that there.””

“I didn't say you did.””

Her face flushed.

I stood.

“I'm going upstairs.””

“Why?”” Vanessa asked.

“To check Maya's room.””

She followed me.

“Daniel, this is unnecessary.””

“Stay downstairs.””

“I want to help.””

“No.””

Maya followed anyway.

We searched her room carefully.

Desk drawers.

Closet.

Backpack.

Bookshelf.

Under the bed.

Nothing.

Then Maya opened the small wooden box where she kept old birthday cards.

A photograph fell out.

She picked it up.

It showed the three of us at the lake two summers earlier.

Me.

Maya.

Vanessa.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*You don't know me, but I know what happened to your money.*

Maya's fingers began shaking.

“Dad…”

I took the photograph.

“Where did this come from?””

“It wasn't there before.””

Vanessa looked at it.

Her lips parted.

“That's impossible.””

“Why?””

She didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She backed away.

“I don't know.””

“You recognize the handwriting.””

“No.””

“You reacted before you even read the whole thing.””

“I didn't.””

I looked down at the note.

There was another line beneath it.

*Look at the recording from 7:52. Not 8:11.*

My pulse quickened.

I opened the camera app again.

The living room footage.

7:52.

At first, nothing happened.

Then Maya appeared on screen.

She entered the room.

She walked to the table.

She picked up the tuition envelope.

My heart dropped.

Maya looked at the envelope.

Then she walked toward the hallway.

I stopped the footage.

Maya's face went white.

“I didn't take it.””

“I know.””

“I swear, Dad.””

“I know.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You see?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She had the envelope.””

“She didn't steal it.””

“But she took it from the table.””

“Because I told her to put it in her backpack.””

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

I resumed the recording.

Maya carried the envelope upstairs.

Three minutes later, she came back down without it.

Then she went into the kitchen.

She returned to the living room.

She looked under the sofa.

Then she walked upstairs again.

I paused.

“Why did you look under the sofa?””

Maya frowned.

“I don't remember.””

“Think.””

She closed her eyes.

“I thought I heard something fall.””

“What?””

“I don't know.””

Vanessa suddenly said, “Can we stop?””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because this isn't helping.””

“It's helping me.””

I returned to the recording.

7:58.

The hallway camera showed Maya going upstairs.

8:02.

The living room was empty.

8:05.

Maya came down.

8:08.

She walked away.

8:10.

Vanessa entered.

8:11.

She moved the camera.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You had three minutes.””

She shook her head.

“For what?””

“To take the money.””

“I didn't.””

“Then where is it?””

“I don't know.””

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

*You're looking at the wrong person.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*Ask Vanessa why she needed the camera blind at 8:11.*

Vanessa saw my expression.

“Daniel…”

I held up the phone.

“Did you need the camera blind?””

“No.””

“Then why did you move it?””

“I already told you.””

“You panicked.””

“Yes.””

“About what?””

She looked toward Maya.

Then toward the stairs.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because someone was coming into the house.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

She didn't answer.

The front door creaked.

All three of us turned.

Nobody had touched it.

The lock slowly clicked.

Then the door opened.

A man stood on the porch.

He was soaked from the rain.

He looked straight at Vanessa.

And said,

“You told me you'd already taken care of it.””

Maya gasped.

I stepped in front of my daughter.

“Who the hell are you?””

The man looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

And his face changed.

“You didn't tell him?””

May you like

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“No.””
