Chapter 3: The Hidden File

The stranger stood in my doorway dripping rainwater onto the hardwood floor.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I could hear Maya breathing behind me.

Vanessa looked like she'd seen a ghost.

I stepped forward.

“You have five seconds to tell me who you are.””

The man raised both hands.

“I'm not here to hurt anyone.””

“Then start talking.””

“My name is Eric.””

“Eric what?””

He hesitated.

“Eric Coleman.””

Vanessa whispered, “You shouldn't have come here.””

Eric looked at her.

“You stopped answering my calls.””

“I told you not to come to the house.””

“You also told me this would be over.””

“What would be over?”” I demanded.

Eric looked at me.

Then at the tuition notice still lying on the table.

His eyes widened.

“Oh.””

That single word made my stomach tighten.

“You know about the money.””

Eric didn't answer.

I grabbed his jacket.

“Do you know where my daughter's tuition money is?””

“Daniel!””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

Eric pushed my hand away.

“I didn't take your money.””

“Then why did you say Vanessa had already taken care of it?””

“I meant the camera.””

“What does that mean?””

Eric looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“Don't.””

He sighed.

“She asked me to disable the backup system.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“You hired him?””

“No.””

Eric frowned.

“You did.””

“I asked you to check the system.””

“You paid me to disable the backup.””

Maya whispered, “Dad…”

I could barely process it.

“You paid him to disable our security system?””

Vanessa rubbed her arms.

“I needed privacy.””

“For what?””

“I can't explain here.””

“You're going to explain now.””

Eric looked uncomfortable.

“This is a family matter.””

I turned to him.

“You walked into my house during a rainstorm and admitted my wife hired you to interfere with my security cameras. You don't get to decide what is a family matter.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“I think you should tell him.””

She shook her head.

“Eric, leave.””

“No.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“I've covered for you enough.””

My heart sank.

“Covered for her?””

Eric nodded.

“Vanessa didn't steal the tuition money.””

I almost laughed.

“Then what exactly did she do?””

Eric reached into his coat.

Vanessa lunged forward.

“Don't!””

He pulled out a small black USB drive.

“This.””

Vanessa stopped.

Maya stared at it.

“What is that?””

Eric held it out to me.

“Backup footage.””

Vanessa's voice became barely audible.

“Daniel, please.””

I took the drive.

“What's on it?””

“The camera recordings.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You said the system malfunctioned.””

“It did.””

“You said you couldn't explain.””

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

She didn't answer.

I plugged the drive into my laptop.

A folder appeared.

There were dozens of files.

Dates.

Times.

Camera numbers.

Then I saw one folder that didn't match the others.

*PRIVATE_BACKUP*

Inside was a single video.

The filename was:

*VANESSA_8-11PM*

My hands went cold.

I clicked it.

The video showed our living room.

The angle was different.

The backup camera had been hidden high on a bookshelf.

The picture was clear.

8:09 p.m.

Vanessa entered.

She looked toward the main camera.

Then she took out her phone.

She made a call.

“It's ready,” she said.

I looked at Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

On the recording, a man's voice came through the phone.

“Are you sure?””

Vanessa replied, “Yes.””

“Three thousand eight hundred?””

“Yes.””

“That's all?””

“Yes.””

My chair scraped backward.

I looked at Vanessa.

She began crying.

But I kept watching.

On the video, Vanessa walked to the table.

She stared at the tuition envelope.

Then she picked it up.

Maya made a small sound behind me.

“No…”

Vanessa looked at the envelope.

She didn't open it.

Instead, she walked toward the kitchen.

I paused the recording.

“You took it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't keep it.””

“You took it.””

“Yes.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because I had to.””

“Had to?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Maya's face twisted.

“By taking my tuition money?””

“No.””

“Then where is it?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I put it somewhere safe.””

“Where?””

“I can't tell you.””

I stood so quickly the chair nearly tipped over.

“You have one chance.””

She flinched.

“Tell me where my daughter's money is.””

“It isn't gone.””

“Then where?””

She covered her mouth.

Tears ran down her cheeks.

“I borrowed it.””

Maya stared at her.

“For what?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

I looked back at the video.

At 8:10, Vanessa placed the envelope inside a black handbag.

Then she returned to the living room.

At 8:11, she moved the camera.

At 8:12, she stood beneath it again.

But this time, she wasn't alone.

Someone entered from the hallway.

The footage caught only part of the person's face.

I leaned toward the screen.

Vanessa gasped.

Maya whispered,

“That's…”

The video suddenly froze.

Then the hidden audio continued.

Vanessa's voice came through.

“Please. If Daniel finds out, he'll never forgive me.””

A man's voice answered:

“He won't find out if you follow the plan.””

I looked at Eric.

He was staring at the floor.

“You knew about this.””

He nodded.

“I knew part of it.””

“What plan?””

Eric didn't answer.

I pressed play.

The footage resumed.

Vanessa handed the black handbag to the man.

Then the camera angle shifted slightly.

His face appeared.

I froze.

Because I knew him.

Not well.

But well enough.

He was someone who had sat at my dinner table.

Someone I had trusted with my home.

Someone Maya had called family.

I slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“Who is he?””

She was sobbing now.

“Daniel…”

“Who is he?””

Eric whispered, “She didn't tell you?””

I looked at him.

“Tell me.””

Eric swallowed.

“It's your brother.””

The room seemed to tilt.

My brother, Nathan.

The same man who had hugged Maya two weeks earlier and promised he would attend her tuition orientation.

The same man who had told me I was lucky to have such a hardworking daughter.

I stared at the frozen image of him taking the black handbag.

Maya backed away.

“Uncle Nathan?””

Vanessa nodded.

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

I rewound the footage.

There had to be more.

There was.

A second hidden file.

*VANESSA_7-42PM*

I opened it.

The footage showed Vanessa sitting alone at the kitchen table.

She was crying.

Then Nathan entered.

He placed a stack of papers in front of her.

She looked at the first page.

Her face went completely white.

Nathan said something I couldn't hear.

Vanessa shook her head.

Then she said clearly:

“I won't do it.””

Nathan leaned closer.

“You don't have a choice.””

Vanessa whispered,

“If Daniel finds out what those papers say, he'll leave me.””

Nathan replied:

“He won't get the chance.””

The recording ended.

I stared at the black screen.

“What papers?””

Vanessa covered her face.

I turned toward her.

“What papers, Vanessa?””

She slowly lowered her hands.

Then she looked at Maya.

And for the first time that night, she wasn't afraid for herself.

She was afraid for my daughter.

“The tuition money wasn't stolen,” she whispered.

“It was payment.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Payment for what?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

May you like

Then she said the words that made Maya scream.

“Your daughter was never supposed to be the one blamed.””
