Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Lies
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
I just stared at the photograph sitting on the old wooden table between me and Thomas.
The person standing beside my father wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t some stranger.
It wasn’t someone from my father’s past that I had never met.
It was someone who had sat at our dinner table.
Someone who had attended my school plays.
Someone who had hugged me after my father’s funeral and told me everything would be okay.
Rachel.
My mother’s sister.
My aunt.
The woman who had spent the last few days helping me uncover the truth.
The woman who had told me she was afraid this day would come.
My hands started shaking.
“No.””
Thomas watched me carefully.
“You recognize her.””
I looked up.
“Why is she in this picture?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That made my stomach turn.
“Thomas.””
He sighed.
“Because she was there the night your father died.””
I stepped away from the table.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
My voice grew louder.
“My aunt loved my dad.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“She did.””
“Then why are you saying this?””
“Because love doesn’t always stop people from making terrible choices.””
I looked back at the photograph.
My mind raced through memories.
Rachel bringing me birthday presents.
Rachel teaching me how to ride a bike.
Rachel sitting beside my mother during every difficult moment.
She had always been the person my mother trusted most.
The person who helped hold our family together.
And now Thomas was telling me she was the reason it fell apart.
“What happened that night?””
Thomas looked toward the window.
“The truth is complicated.””
“I don’t care.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m tired of complicated.””
He looked at me.
“I understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
I pointed at the picture.
“My entire life has been built on things people didn’t tell me.””
I swallowed.
“I lost my father. Then I almost lost my mother because everyone decided they knew what was best for me.””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
“I am?””
“Yes.””
He sat down.
“And that’s why you need to hear everything.””
I stayed standing.
“Tell me.””
Thomas took a deep breath.
“Your father discovered Daniel was being used by someone else.””
“Used?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
Thomas looked at the photograph.
“Rachel.””
My chest tightened.
“She was involved?””
“Not in the way you think.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Thomas continued.
“Daniel was dangerous. Your father knew that. But Rachel believed she could control him.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel had information.””
“What information?””
Thomas looked at me.
“About your father.””
I froze.
“What about him?””
“Your father wasn’t perfect.””
The words felt like another betrayal.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your father made choices he regretted.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Evan, your father found out Rachel had been hiding financial problems. She was desperate. She owed people money.””
My face went numb.
“And Daniel?””
“Daniel offered her a way out.””
I looked down.
“So she helped him.””
“Yes.””
“Did she kill my dad?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
That silence said enough.
I left the farmhouse before he could stop me.
I didn’t drive.
I walked.
I needed air.
I needed space.
I needed someone to tell me my whole life wasn’t a lie.
But nobody could.
Because everyone who loved me had hidden something.
When I reached Rachel’s house, the lights were on.
My hands shook as I knocked.
She opened the door.
The moment she saw my face, she knew.
Her expression changed.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“Evan…”
I stepped inside.
“Why?””
She froze.
“Why what?””
“Why were you there?””
The color drained from her face.
“What did you find?””
I held up the photograph.
She closed her eyes.
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered:
“Thomas.””
I laughed.
“You’re blaming him?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I’m blaming myself.””
That was the last answer I expected.
“Tell me the truth.””
She sat down slowly.
“I never wanted any of this.””
“But it happened.””
“Yes.””
“Because of you?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
The word broke something inside me.
“Why?””
She looked at the floor.
“Because I was scared.””
“Everyone says that.””
“I know.””
She wiped her face.
“But fear makes people do things they never thought they could do.””
I stared at her.
“What did you do?””
She took a shaky breath.
“I asked Daniel for help.””
“With what?””
“Money.””
The room felt smaller.
“I was drowning.””
“You could have told Mom.””
“I was ashamed.””
“So you went to Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“And Dad found out.””
She nodded.
“Your father found out I was working with him.””
“Working with him doing what?””
Rachel looked away.
“I was giving Daniel information.””
My heart dropped.
“What kind of information?””
“About your father.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel told me he only wanted to scare him.””
She started crying.
“I believed him.””
I felt sick.
“You helped him.””
“Yes.””
“Dad died because you helped him.””
She covered her face.
“I know.””
The anger inside me burned.
“How could you?””
She looked up.
“Because I thought I was fixing my mistake.””
“What does that mean?””
She took a deep breath.
“Your father wasn’t supposed to die.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Daniel and your father argued that night. I went there because I wanted to stop it.””
“And?””
“And everything went wrong.””
The room became silent.
“Who was driving?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Your mother.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“She arrived after the argument.””
“No.””
“She was trying to get your father away.””
“No.””
“Evan…”
“No.””
I backed away.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
My mother.
The woman who spent years protecting me.
The woman who pushed me away to save me.
The woman who carried all this pain alone.
She was behind the wheel.
“She didn’t kill him,” Rachel said quickly.
“Then what happened?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Daniel caused the crash.””
I stared.
“Then why did Mom take the blame?””
Rachel’s tears fell.
“Because she thought protecting you meant protecting everyone who was left.””
A sound came from the hallway.
A voice.
“Because I was wrong.””
I turned.
My mother stood there.
I hadn’t heard her enter.
She looked older than she had yesterday.
Like she had aged years overnight.
“Mom…”
She looked at me.
“I should have told you.””
I couldn’t speak.
She stepped closer.
“I spent eight years trying to protect you from the truth.””
Her voice broke.
“But the truth found you anyway.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She whispered:
“Because your father’s last words were about you.””
My heart stopped.
“What did he say?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“He told me to make sure you never grew up believing you were surrounded by people who loved you only because of him.””
A tear fell down her face.
“He wanted you to have a normal life.””
I shook my head.
“But I didn’t.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You had a life built on secrets.””
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And her face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“Who is it?””
She answered.
Nobody spoke for a few seconds.
Then a voice came through.
A voice we all recognized.
Daniel.
“You found out the truth.””
My mother froze.
Daniel continued.
“But you still don’t know the biggest secret.””
My blood went cold.
“What secret?””
There was a pause.
Then Daniel said:
“The accident wasn’t the night your father died.””
I stared.
“What?””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“It was the night your father disappeared.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
May you like
Because if Daniel was telling the truth…
Then everything we believed about my father’s death was wrong.
