Chapter 8: The Witness Who Vanished

Finding Thomas Reed was almost impossible.

There were no recent records.

No social media.

No listed address.

It was like he had disappeared from the world.

Which made one thing clear.

He didn’t want to be found.

But I had spent years living inside a lie.

I wasn’t stopping now.

Rachel helped me search through my father’s old belongings.

That was when we found the notebook.

It was hidden inside the lining of an old jacket.

My father’s handwriting covered every page.

The last entry was dated the night he died.

*Thomas knows.*

That was all.

Three words.

Just like my mother’s note.

Just like every secret in my family.

Always almost the truth.

Never the whole thing.

I showed it to my mother.

She went silent.

“You knew about him.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Thomas was the reason your father was in danger.””

I stared.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Your father trusted him.””

“And?””

“And sometimes the people closest to you are the ones who hurt you the most.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because I had spent days wondering whether Daniel was the enemy.

Now I wasn’t sure anymore.

That evening, I received another message.

A location.

No words.

Just an address.

I showed my mother.

Her face changed immediately.

“Don’t go.””

“Why?””

“Because that’s where Thomas lived.””

I looked at her.

“Exactly.””

She grabbed my arm.

“Evan, please.””

I pulled away.

“You keep asking me to trust you.””

My voice cracked.

“But every time I do, I find out you hid something else.””

She looked like I had slapped her.

And I hated myself for it.

But I needed answers.

“I’m not trying to hurt you.””

“I know.””

“Then let me do this.””

She whispered:

“I already lost your father.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I can’t lose you too.””

For a moment, I almost stayed.

Almost.

Then I remembered the first night.

My mother standing in front of Daniel.

Her whisper.

*I’m not protecting him from you.*

She had been trying to save me.

And now I needed to save her.

The address led me to an abandoned farmhouse outside town.

The door was already open.

That scared me.

I stepped inside.

“Thomas?””

No answer.

The house smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

Rain.

Then I heard footsteps.

Someone behind me.

I turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Tired.

But I recognized him immediately.

Because he looked exactly like the man in my father’s old photographs.

Thomas Reed.

“You’re Evan.””

I stepped back.

“How do you know my name?””

He looked at me sadly.

“Because I’ve been watching you.””

My stomach tightened.

“You sent the messages?””

He nodded.

“Some of them.””

“Why?””

“Because I needed to know if you were ready.””

“Ready for what?””

Thomas looked toward the old farmhouse.

“Your father died because he trusted the wrong person.””

I clenched my jaw.

“Was it Daniel?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“Who was it?””

He looked at me.

Then he said:

“Your mother.””

The words hit harder than anything Daniel had said.

“No.””

Thomas sighed.

“I knew you would say that.””

“My mother loved him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Thomas walked toward an old table.

He placed a folder on it.

Inside was a photograph.

Not the same one.

A different one.

My mother.

My father.

Daniel.

Thomas.

All together.

And behind them…

A fifth person.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected.

Thomas watched my reaction.

“You know him, don’t you?””

I stared at the photograph.

My hands went numb.

Because the fifth person wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone I had seen every day for years.

Someone my mother trusted.

Someone who had helped raise me after my father died.

I looked at Thomas.

“Who is that?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“The person who destroyed your family.””

I looked back at the photograph.

And the truth finally started coming together.

Because the person standing beside my father that night…

The person who knew everything…

Was not Daniel.

May you like

It was someone much closer.

Someone who had been pretending to protect me all along.
