Chapter 3: The Door She Locked
I didn’t go home that night.
I didn’t sleep either.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the picture.
Daniel watching me.
Daniel knowing where I was.
Daniel knowing what I was doing.
But the thing that hurt most was something else.
My mother had been afraid.
Not angry.
Not ashamed.
Afraid.
And she had been trying to tell me without telling me.
The next morning, I went to the only person I thought might know the truth.
My mother’s sister, Rachel.
She opened the door before I even knocked.
The second she saw my face, she knew.
“Oh no.””
I stepped inside.
“You know.””
Rachel closed the door behind me.
“I was hoping she would tell you herself.””
“Tell me what?””
She looked toward the window.
Like she was afraid someone might be listening.
“Evan, your mother didn’t choose Daniel.””
“Then why did she make me leave?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Because Daniel gave her no choice.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel sat down.
“Your mother found out something about him.””
“What?””
“He’s not who he says he is.””
I waited.
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
“Daniel has been lying about his past. About his money. About almost everything.””
“That doesn’t explain why Mom protected him.””
Rachel looked at me.
“She wasn’t protecting him.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“She was protecting me.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“He threatened you.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
“He told your mother that if you interfered, he would make sure your future was ruined.””
I laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“That’s it?””
“No, Evan.””
Rachel’s face was serious.
“He knows people. He has connections. Your mother believed he could hurt you.””
“So she pushed me away?””
“She thought making you hate her would make you leave.””
I looked down.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because suddenly every word my mother said felt different.
Get out of my house.
I’m not protecting him from you.
Please trust me.
She had been trying to save me.
And I had walked away believing she betrayed me.
“I need to see her.””
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“No.””
“I need to talk to her.””
“You can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel is waiting for you to come back.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Rachel swallowed.
“He wants you angry. He wants you emotional. He wants you to make a mistake.””
My fists tightened.
“He thinks I’m stupid.””
“No.””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“He thinks you’re a son who loves his mother.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
Because it was true.
I would walk into a fire for her.
And Daniel knew it.
That afternoon, my mother called again.
This time, I answered immediately.
“Mom.””
There was silence.
Then:
“Evan, I’m sorry.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I knew what you would do.””
“What?””
“You would come back.””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
“And he would hurt you.””
“I can handle him.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You don’t understand. Men like Daniel don’t lose gracefully.””
I sat down.
“Then let me help you.””
“I already asked you to help.””
“When?””
“When I told you to leave.””
My eyes filled.
“Mom…”
“I needed you to hate me.””
The words destroyed me.
“Why?””
“Because if you hated me, you would stop trying to save me.””
I covered my face.
“That was never going to happen.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“That’s why I was scared.””
Before I could answer, I heard a noise.
A door opening.
My mother went silent.
“Mom?””
No answer.
Then Daniel’s voice.
“Who are you talking to?””
My blood ran cold.
My mother whispered:
“Evan, hang up.””
“No.””
“Please.””
I heard Daniel coming closer.
Then my mother said something quietly.
Something that made my heart stop.
“Evan, if he asks, tell him you never called me.””
“What?””
“Promise me.””
The line went dead.
A minute later, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at the screen.
Then I answered.
“Hello?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Evan.””
I said nothing.
“I think we need to have a conversation.””
“About what?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“About the reason your mother is willing to destroy her own life to protect you.””
I froze.
Because he knew.
He knew I knew.
May you like
And then he whispered:
“She never told you what she did, did she?””
