Chapter 9: The Brother They Tried to Erase

I read the message again.

Then I called the number.

It rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Finally, someone answered.

"Eleanor?""

The voice was young.

Breathless.

"Who are you?""

"My name is Daniel.""

"Daniel Ashford?""

"That's the name they gave me.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where are you?""

"Near the Moreau headquarters. But I can't stay here.""

"Why did you say Adrian ordered your murder?""

A car horn sounded in the background.

Daniel whispered:

"Because I heard him.""

"Where?""

"At Northbridge. I was working there under another name.""

I looked at Celeste.

She was listening closely.

Daniel continued.

"I found documents proving that Julian isn't Victor's son. I also found records connecting Adrian to the plane crash.""

My stomach tightened.

"How?""

"Adrian's father arranged the payment. Thomas was the middleman. Julian's people handled the cover-up.""

"Why would they want to kill you?""

"Because I found the original beneficiary list.""

I closed my eyes.

"Where is it?""

"With me.""

"Bring it to me.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because Adrian has people following me.""

A sharp noise came through the phone.

Daniel gasped.

"Eleanor, listen. There's something else you need to know.""

"What?""

"Your mother didn't fake her death alone.""

I looked toward the atelier photograph in my hand.

"Who helped her?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Robert.""

I stopped breathing.

"What?""

"Robert Vale knew the plane was going to crash.""

I stared at the phone.

"That's impossible.""

"He knew Thomas was being manipulated. He arranged his own disappearance before the flight.""

I felt my knees weaken.

Daniel continued.

"He survived. He was moved to a private clinic under another identity.""

I couldn't speak.

"He's alive, Eleanor.""

The phone went silent.

Then Daniel whispered:

"And he's the only person who can prove what really happened.""

Celeste drove us directly to Moreau headquarters.

The building was surrounded by journalists.

Cameras flashed as soon as our car pulled up.

A reporter shouted my name.

"Mrs. Vale! Is it true you're being removed from the company?""

Another called out:

"Did you forge the transfer documents?""

I ignored them.

Marcus opened the door.

We entered through the private security entrance.

Inside, employees were gathered around television screens.

Adrian's press conference was still live.

He stood confidently at the podium.

"Unfortunately, my wife has become increasingly unstable. I have tried to protect her, but the situation has become impossible.""

Julian stood behind him.

His expression was almost amused.

I watched Adrian lift a photograph.

It showed me standing outside the atelier, holding the brass key.

The image had been edited.

In the original, I was holding my mother's letter.

In Adrian's version, the letter had been removed.

He turned toward the cameras.

"This is the behavior of a woman who has lost touch with reality.""

I felt Celeste's hand tighten around my arm.

"Don't react.""

I smiled faintly.

"I'm not planning to.""

I walked toward the conference room.

Adrian was still speaking when the doors opened.

He stopped mid-sentence.

The room fell silent.

I stepped inside.

"Hello, husband.""

A dozen cameras turned toward me.

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"Eleanor.""

I looked at the microphones.

"Please continue. You were explaining how concerned you are about my mental health.""

A few reporters laughed nervously.

Adrian stepped away from the podium.

"This is a private corporate matter.""

"Then why are there thirty journalists here?""

He clenched his jaw.

Julian approached.

"Mrs. Vale, I suggest you leave.""

I looked at him.

"Not until we're finished.""

Adrian held up the divorce petition.

"I've filed for divorce.""

I nodded.

"Wonderful.""

He seemed surprised.

"That's all you have to say?""

"No. I also want you to know that I agree.""

The cameras flashed.

I continued.

"But I won't be signing anything until the court has examined the financial records, the forged documents, and the evidence connecting you to the attempted transfer of my shares.""

Adrian's face hardened.

"You have no evidence.""

I turned toward the screen.

"Show them the full Fashion Week footage.""

Celeste nodded.

The large display changed.

The original recording appeared.

Vanessa sat in my seat.

The emerald necklace was clearly visible.

Adrian's voice echoed through the conference room.

"Go home! You have no place here!""

Then my voice.

"That seat is mine! You cannot erase me!""

And finally, Celeste's voice.

"You just humiliated the OWNER of this entire fashion event!""

The room erupted.

Reporters began shouting questions.

Adrian tried to interrupt.

But I raised my hand.

"That's not all.""

Celeste displayed the financial transfers.

Four point eight million dollars.

The offshore company.

The forged emails.

The attempted acquisition agreement.

Then she played Adrian's recording.

"...once Eleanor signs the transfer, the company is ours.""

His face went white.

Julian turned toward him.

"Turn it off!""

Celeste didn't move.

The recording continued.

"Let her see it. Let her lose control in public. Once the footage goes viral, we'll make her look unstable.""

A reporter shouted:

"Mr. Cole, is that your voice?""

Adrian said nothing.

Another asked:

"Did you steal Mrs. Vale's mother's necklace?""

He looked toward Julian.

For the first time, the two men seemed to be blaming each other.

I stepped toward the microphone.

"My husband has spent seven years telling me that I was too emotional to run my own company.""

I looked directly at the cameras.

"He was wrong.""

Then I turned toward Adrian.

"And now he can explain himself to the authorities.""

The press conference was interrupted by three police officers entering the room.

A senior investigator approached Julian.

"Mr. Ashford, we'd like you to accompany us.""

Julian laughed.

"On what grounds?""

"Financial fraud, falsification of corporate documents, and suspected conspiracy.""

He turned toward Adrian.

"Tell them!""

Adrian stepped backward.

"You said everything was arranged.""

Julian's face twisted.

"Don't you dare.""

Adrian pointed at him.

"He planned the whole thing!""

I watched them turn on each other.

Two men who had spent years pretending to be allies.

Two men who had used people like pieces on a chessboard.

Now they were desperately trying to save themselves.

The officers separated them.

Adrian looked toward me.

"Eleanor, please.""

I didn't move.

"Don't do this.""

I stared at him.

"You already did.""

He lowered his voice.

"We were married.""

"Yes.""

"I loved you.""

I almost laughed.

"You loved what you thought you could take from me.""

His eyes filled.

"I can explain.""

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Then explain it to the judge.""

He was escorted away.

But Julian was still smiling.

Even as the officers took him toward the exit.

He stopped beside me.

"You think you've won?""

I looked at him.

"The evidence says otherwise.""

He leaned closer.

"You still don't know who Daniel really is.""

My heart tightened.

"What does that mean?""

Julian smiled.

"Ask your mother why she never told you that Thomas had another child.""

Then he was gone.

An hour later, I was in Celeste's office when Daniel called again.

"Are you safe?"" I asked.

"For now.""

"Where are you?""

"Outside the old Moreau warehouse.""

"Stay there. I'm coming.""

"No. There's something you need to see first.""

He sent me a photograph.

It showed an old leather suitcase.

Inside was a stack of documents.

At the top was a birth certificate.

The name was clearly visible.

*DANIEL THOMAS ASHFORD.*

Mother's name: Isabelle Vale.

Father's name: Thomas Ashford.

I stared at it.

Then I looked at the date.

Daniel had been born two years before me.

My mother had never mentioned him.

I called her.

She answered immediately.

"Eleanor?""

"Mom, who is Daniel?""

Silence.

Then a small, broken breath.

"Where did you hear that name?""

"He's Thomas's son.""

My mother began crying.

"Yes.""

"He's your son too?""

Another silence.

"Yes.""

I sat down.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought he was dead.""

I closed my eyes.

"How?""

My mother explained that Daniel had been taken from her shortly after birth.

Thomas had arranged for him to be raised by a family in another country because he believed the child would be safer away from Victor.

But the arrangement had been manipulated.

The family had disappeared.

The records had been altered.

And for years, Thomas had believed his son had died.

"How did he find me?""

My mother hesitated.

"Because I left him a letter.""

"What letter?""

"The same letter I left in the atelier.""

I stared at the brass key in my hand.

"The one Sophie stole?""

"Yes.""

I remembered the words.

Blood does not always make a family.

"Mom, why did you write that?""

She sobbed.

"Because I knew one day you might meet Daniel. And I wanted you to understand that he was never your enemy.""

I leaned back.

"Why did you hide him from me?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing you.""

I closed my eyes.

For the first time, I understood that my mother had spent her entire life making decisions out of fear.

And every decision had created another secret.

Another wound.

Another person who had been left behind.

"Where is Robert?"" I asked.

My mother went silent.

Then she said:

"He's in a private care facility outside London.""

"Is he alive?""

"Yes.""

I gripped the phone.

"Can I see him?""

"Of course.""

"Then we're going.""

We arrived at the facility just before sunset.

It was a quiet building surrounded by gardens.

The staff led us to a private room on the second floor.

I stopped outside the door.

My mother stood beside me.

Her hands were trembling.

"He's been waiting for you," she whispered.

I opened the door.

A man sat beside the window in a wheelchair.

His hair was completely white.

His face was thinner.

But his eyes...

Those were the same eyes I remembered.

He turned toward me.

And smiled.

"Eleanor.""

My knees nearly gave way.

"Dad?""

He opened his arms.

I ran to him.

For the first time in three years, I was in the arms of the man who had raised me.

He held me tightly.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""

I cried against his shoulder.

"Why didn't you come home?""

He closed his eyes.

"Because I thought staying away was the only way to keep you alive.""

I pulled back.

"Did you know Thomas was involved?""

He nodded.

"I knew he had been manipulated.""

"Did you know he was my biological father?""

"Yes.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Robert looked toward Isabelle.

"Because I didn't want you to believe that love had anything to do with blood.""

I sat beside him.

He took my hand.

"Listen to me, Eleanor. Thomas made a terrible mistake. But Victor used him. And the people who orchestrated everything were never interested in justice.""

"Who were they?""

Robert looked toward the window.

"Adrian's father wasn't the only man involved.""

He paused.

"There's another person.""

I leaned forward.

"Who?""

Robert reached into the drawer beside his chair.

He removed a small photograph.

It showed three men standing outside a private bank.

One was Thomas.

Another was Victor.

The third man wore a familiar silver watch.

I recognized him immediately.

Daniel Price.

The solicitor who had claimed to protect my mother.

I looked at Robert.

"Daniel Price was involved?""

Robert nodded.

"He's been hiding the truth for twenty-eight years.""

My mother covered her mouth.

Robert continued.

"And he wasn't acting alone.""

He turned the photograph over.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*THE FINAL BENEFICIARY MUST NEVER BE FOUND.*

Beneath it was another name.

Not mine.

Not Daniel's.

Not Julian's.

A name I recognized from the original Moreau board.

*CELESTE MOREAU.*

I turned toward the woman standing behind me.

Celeste had gone completely pale.

"Dad," I whispered.

"What does this mean?""

Robert gripped my hand.

"It means the woman who has been protecting you...""

May you like

He looked directly at Celeste.

"...is the reason your family was destroyed.""
