Chapter 8: The Price of the Truth

The Ashford residence looked more like a private museum than a home.

Tall iron gates surrounded the property. Security cameras lined the driveway, and enormous stone pillars framed the entrance.

It was nearly five in the morning when we arrived.

The house was illuminated.

Several cars stood outside.

And a black ambulance was parked near the front steps.

I climbed out before Marcus could open my door.

"Where is Sophie?""

A security guard stepped forward.

"Ma'am, you cannot enter.""

I held up my identification.

"I'm Eleanor Vale. I want to speak to Julian Ashford.""

The guard looked at my face.

Then at the identification.

His expression changed.

"Please wait here.""

I didn't wait.

I walked past him.

Marcus followed.

Inside, the house smelled of expensive furniture polish and fresh flowers.

A crystal chandelier hung above the staircase.

On the wall was a large oil painting of a family portrait.

Victor Ashford stood in the center.

Beside him was a woman I recognized from the trust documents.

And at the far right stood a younger Sophie.

I stopped.

Her eyes in the painting were unmistakable.

Julian appeared at the top of the stairs.

He wore a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

His expression was calm.

Almost welcoming.

"Eleanor.""

I looked at him.

"Where is Sophie?""

He descended slowly.

"Good morning to you too.""

"Where is she?""

"She's receiving medical attention.""

"What happened?""

"She fainted.""

"Why?""

He smiled faintly.

"Perhaps you should ask her.""

I stepped closer.

"Take me to her.""

Julian studied me.

"You look remarkably like your mother.""

"Don't talk about her.""

He laughed softly.

"Still protective. I suppose that runs in the family.""

I looked around.

"Where is Adrian?""

"Not here.""

"Then why is his car outside?""

Julian glanced toward the window.

For a fraction of a second, his expression changed.

I noticed.

"He's upstairs, isn't he?""

Julian sighed.

"You're becoming difficult.""

I stepped toward the staircase.

Two security guards blocked my way.

Marcus immediately moved between us.

"Nobody touches Mrs. Vale.""

Julian raised his hands.

"There's no need for theatrics.""

He turned toward the hallway.

"Show her.""

Sophie was lying on a sofa in a private medical room.

Her face was pale.

A glass of water sat on the table beside her.

When she saw me, she tried to sit up.

"Eleanor.""

I stood in the doorway.

"Don't.""

She stopped.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she began to cry.

"I'm sorry.""

I looked at her.

"Are you?""

"Yes.""

"Are you sorry you betrayed me, or sorry you got caught?""

She lowered her head.

I walked closer.

"Where is the key?""

Sophie looked at Julian.

He was standing behind me.

"I gave it to him.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

"He promised he'd protect me.""

I laughed bitterly.

"From what?""

"From being erased.""

I stared at her.

She wiped her face.

"Julian told me that Victor had left me nothing. He said the family trust was the only way I could claim what belonged to me.""

"And Adrian?""

She hesitated.

"He was supposed to help me.""

"By marrying me?""

Sophie closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"How long?""

"Before your wedding.""

"How long were you and Adrian together?""

"Three years.""

I stared at her.

Three years.

She had watched me fall in love with him.

She had listened to me talk about our future.

She had stood beside me while I tried on wedding dresses.

And she had known exactly what was happening.

"Did you ever care about me?""

Sophie looked up.

For the first time, I saw genuine shame in her expression.

"Yes.""

"Then why?""

"Because I was tired of being invisible.""

She sat up slowly.

"Victor was my father. But he never acknowledged me publicly. My mother died believing he would eventually give me his name.""

I said nothing.

"When I discovered the trust, I thought it was my chance to finally matter. Julian told me that if I helped him secure the documents, he'd give me my share.""

"And Adrian promised to leave me.""

Sophie nodded.

"He said you were just a business arrangement.""

I stared at her.

"Then why did you marry him first?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because we were in love.""

I almost laughed.

"Was he?""

She didn't answer.

I leaned closer.

"Did you know he was planning to use you too?""

Sophie looked confused.

"What?""

I turned toward Marcus.

"Play the recording.""

He opened his phone.

Adrian's voice filled the room.

"...Sophie is useful, but she's not essential. Once Eleanor's signature is secured, Julian can handle the rest.""

Then another voice.

Julian's.

"And what happens to her?""

Adrian laughed.

"She'll get what she deserves.""

Sophie covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

"She's too emotional. If she starts making demands, we'll use the marriage certificate to discredit her.""

The file ended.

Sophie stared at the floor.

"He said he loved me.""

I looked at her.

"He told me the same thing.""

For the first time, neither of us had anything to say.

Julian entered the room.

"That was unnecessary.""

I turned.

"Where is the key?""

He smiled.

"Safe.""

"Where?""

"Somewhere you won't find it.""

I stepped closer.

"Then you won't mind if I tell the authorities about the forged documents, the financial transfers, and the attempted fraud.""

Julian laughed.

"You can tell them whatever you like.""

He pulled a document from his jacket.

"Unfortunately, the situation has changed.""

He placed it on the table.

It was a court filing.

A petition for emergency guardianship over my financial interests.

The petitioner was Adrian Cole.

The supporting declaration was signed by two private physicians.

And the grounds were listed clearly.

*Emotional instability. Reckless public behavior. Inability to manage substantial assets.*

I stared at the document.

"They're trying to have me declared incompetent.""

Julian nodded.

"Your husband is concerned about your well-being.""

I looked at him.

"My husband?""

"Legally, yes.""

"Not for much longer.""

Julian smiled.

"That may be more complicated than you think.""

He turned to Sophie.

"Come.""

She didn't move.

"Sophie.""

She looked at him.

"No.""

His smile disappeared.

"Excuse me?""

"I said no.""

He stepped closer.

"You owe me.""

"I owe you nothing.""

"You wouldn't have any of this without me.""

Sophie began to cry again.

"That's what you told me when you asked me to sign those papers. You said I would finally belong to the family.""

Julian grabbed her arm.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

"Let her go.""

Julian released her.

Then he looked at me.

"You're both making a mistake.""

He turned toward the door.

"By tomorrow morning, the board will have voted. Your position will be gone, Eleanor.""

I watched him leave.

Then I turned toward Sophie.

"Why did you come here?""

She reached beneath a cushion and pulled out a small folded paper.

"Because I found something.""

I took it.

It was a receipt from a private storage facility.

The location was in London.

A unit number was printed at the bottom.

*UNIT 714.*

My mother's handwriting appeared on the back.

The truth is not in the safe. The truth is in the things they forgot to destroy.

I looked at Sophie.

"What does this mean?""

She swallowed.

"Julian kept the key. But he doesn't know about the storage unit.""

"What's inside?""

"I don't know.""

She reached for my hand.

"Eleanor, I think it's the original evidence from the plane crash.""

We left the Ashford residence just after sunrise.

Celeste was waiting in the car.

When I showed her the receipt, she immediately recognized the storage company.

"Your mother rented a unit there years ago.""

"How do you know?""

"I helped her arrange it.""

I looked at her.

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Celeste sighed.

"Because Isabelle made me promise not to reveal its existence unless you discovered the truth about Thomas.""

I studied her.

"Another secret.""

"One more.""

I climbed into the car.

"Let's find out what she left.""

The storage facility stood behind an industrial estate in West London.

A security clerk led us through a narrow corridor.

Unit 714 was at the far end.

The door was secured with an old combination lock.

Celeste entered the numbers.

07-14-1998.

The lock clicked.

Inside were several cardboard boxes, a metal filing cabinet, and an old leather suitcase.

I opened the first box.

Photographs.

Letters.

Bank statements.

A series of handwritten notes from Robert.

I picked up one envelope.

It was addressed to my mother.

Isabelle, if anything happens to me, tell Eleanor that I loved her from the moment I first held her.

My eyes filled.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

Then I opened the suitcase.

Inside was a small cassette recorder.

An old-fashioned device.

And a sealed envelope marked:

*ROBERT VALE — FINAL TESTIMONY.*

Celeste brought over a portable cassette player.

The recording began with static.

Then a familiar voice filled the room.

Robert.

My father.

"If you're listening to this, then Victor has succeeded in making Thomas believe I am his enemy.""

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

"Thomas, if you ever hear this, I want you to understand that I know what Victor has told you. None of it is true.""

A pause.

Then Robert spoke again.

"I know Eleanor isn't my biological daughter. But she is my daughter. And I will protect her with my life.""

I began to cry.

The recording continued.

"Victor has been moving money through Northbridge. He has been stealing from the company and using my name to hide it.""

Then came the words that changed everything.

"I have proof that Julian is not Victor's biological son.""

Celeste looked at me.

I stared at the recorder.

Robert continued.

"Julian was born from an affair between Victor's wife and another man. Victor discovered the truth and used it to control the boy.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"So Julian isn't even an Ashford?""

Celeste whispered.

The recording went on.

"Victor's real heir is Sophie. But there is another truth. Sophie isn't the only child Victor fathered outside his marriage.""

Static crackled.

Then Robert said:

"Thomas has a son.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

The recording continued.

"His name is Daniel.""

I looked at Celeste.

"Daniel Price?""

She shook her head.

"No. Daniel is the solicitor.""

Robert's voice became faint.

"Thomas had another child before Eleanor. A son who was taken from him and raised under a different name.""

The tape ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His expression changed.

"Mrs. Vale?""

"What?""

He turned toward me.

"Adrian has just arrived at Moreau headquarters.""

I stood.

"Why?""

Marcus swallowed.

"He's holding a press conference.""

"About what?""

He hesitated.

Then showed me the live broadcast on his phone.

Adrian stood behind a podium.

Beside him was Julian.

And in front of dozens of cameras, Adrian announced:

"My wife, Eleanor Vale, has suffered a serious psychological breakdown. Effective immediately, I will be taking temporary control of her business interests for her own protection.""

I stared at the screen.

Then Adrian lifted another document.

A divorce petition.

He smiled at the cameras.

"Furthermore, I intend to reveal evidence that Eleanor has been concealing a criminal conspiracy within her own family.""

I looked at the old cassette player.

At the letters.

At the evidence my father had hidden.

And then my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

A young man stood outside the Moreau headquarters.

He looked almost exactly like me.

May you like

The message beneath the photograph read:

*MY NAME IS DANIEL ASHFORD. I'M YOUR BROTHER. AND ADRIAN HAS JUST ORDERED MY MURDER.*
