Chapter 1: The Woman in My Seat

“Adrian! Why is SHE wearing my mother’s necklace?””

My voice cut through the glittering atmosphere of Paris Fashion Week.

For one brief second, the conversations around me stopped.

Hundreds of guests turned toward the front row. Cameras flashed. A champagne glass slipped from someone's fingers and shattered against the polished marble floor.

And there, sitting in my front-row seat, was Vanessa Reed.

My husband's mistress.

She was wearing my emerald necklace.

The necklace my mother had left me before she died.

Vanessa touched the enormous green stone resting against her collarbone and smiled as though she'd just won something.

Beside her stood my husband, Adrian Cole, looking impeccably handsome in a black designer suit.

He didn't look surprised to see me.

He looked annoyed.

"Adrian," I said again, struggling to keep my voice steady.

"Why is Vanessa wearing my mother's necklace?""

He glanced at the necklace, then at me.

"Go home, Eleanor. You have no place here.""

The words landed harder than a slap.

Vanessa leaned back in my seat, crossing one leg over the other.

"He's chosen me," she announced sweetly.

A few people exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Someone near the runway whispered, "Isn't that his wife?""

Another guest raised her phone.

I looked at Adrian, waiting for him to deny it. Waiting for him to remember that we'd been married for seven years.

Waiting for the man who once promised to protect me to show even the smallest trace of shame.

Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"Security will escort you out if you make another scene.""

I stared at him.

"You're threatening to have me removed from an event I helped organize?""

Adrian laughed under his breath.

"Organize? Eleanor, you haven't contributed anything to this company in months. Stop pretending you're important.""

Vanessa giggled.

"Darling, perhaps you should explain things slowly. Not everyone understands when their time is over.""

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

Not fear.

Not embarrassment.

Clarity.

I opened my evening clutch and removed a white card.

It was thick, embossed with silver lettering, and carried the official Fashion Week insignia.

My name was printed across the center.

*ELEANOR VALE — PRINCIPAL OWNER — FRONT ROW, SEAT 01.*

I held it up.

"That seat is mine.""

Adrian rolled his eyes.

"Anyone can print a card.""

"Not this one.""

I took one step closer.

"You cannot erase me, Adrian.""

His jaw tightened.

"Enough.""

He snapped his fingers at a nearby security guard.

"Get her out.""

The guard approached cautiously.

"Madam, may I see your invitation?""

I handed him the white card.

He examined it.

Then his expression changed.

He looked at the card again, then at me.

"Madam...""

Before he could finish, a voice echoed from the runway.

"Nobody touches her.""

The music stopped.

The models froze beneath the enormous crystal chandeliers.

A tall woman in an ivory suit was walking toward us from the end of the runway.

Her silver hair was swept into an elegant knot. A diamond brooch glittered against her lapel.

I recognized her immediately.

Celeste Moreau.

The woman whose name appeared on the invitations of every major fashion house in Europe.

The executive who had turned struggling designers into international icons.

And the woman who had personally appointed me as the majority owner of Moreau Fashion Group.

Celeste stopped beside me.

Her eyes moved from my face to Vanessa's necklace, then to Adrian.

"Mr. Cole," she said quietly.

"Would you care to explain why another woman is sitting in Eleanor's seat?""

Adrian straightened his jacket.

"Celeste, this is a private marital disagreement. I can assure you—"

Celeste raised one hand.

"I wasn't speaking to you about your marriage.""

She pointed directly at me.

"You just humiliated the OWNER of this entire fashion event!""

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Adrian's face drained of color.

Vanessa's smile collapsed.

A camera flashed.

Then another.

Adrian stared at Celeste as though he'd suddenly discovered that the floor beneath him was disappearing.

"Owner?"" he whispered.

Celeste didn't blink.

"Yes. Owner.""

She turned toward the security guards.

"Please make sure nobody removes Mrs. Vale from this building.""

Then she looked at Vanessa.

"And I believe that necklace belongs to her.""

Vanessa instinctively grabbed the emerald pendant.

"Adrian gave it to me.""

Celeste's expression hardened.

"Then Adrian has made a very expensive mistake.""

I looked at my husband.

For the first time that evening, he seemed frightened.

But I wasn't finished.

Because there was something Adrian didn't know.

The fashion event wasn't the only thing I owned.

And the company he'd spent three years trying to steal from me was about to become his biggest problem.

Three hours earlier, I had been standing in front of my bedroom mirror, fastening my mother's emerald necklace around my throat.

I had bought the dress in Milan two months before the show.

A deep emerald-green silk gown with a dramatic open back, designed by a young British designer whose first collection I had personally funded.

My mother would have loved it.

She had always believed that beautiful things were meant to make women feel powerful, not small.

I touched the necklace.

"Wish me luck, Mom," I whispered.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Adrian.

Running late. Meet you at the venue.

I smiled faintly.

For the last six months, our marriage had been little more than polite conversations and separate bedrooms.

Adrian blamed his workload.

I blamed myself.

I had convinced myself that once the Fashion Week launch was over, we could take a vacation, sit across from each other without discussing business, and perhaps remember why we'd fallen in love.

Seven years earlier, Adrian had been a charming young investment consultant with more ambition than money.

I'd met him at a charity auction.

He'd spilled red wine on my white dress, apologized twelve times, and spent the next hour making me laugh.

I had fallen for his confidence.

He had fallen for what he thought was my ordinary life.

That second part would become important later.

I wasn't born into the fashion industry.

My mother, Isabelle Vale, had built a luxury fashion empire from a tiny atelier in London. She had spent decades turning a modest tailoring business into an international group.

When she died, she left me controlling ownership.

I had never wanted to be a celebrity.

I preferred working behind the scenes, helping designers, negotiating partnerships, and protecting the company's creative independence.

Adrian knew I owned shares.

He didn't know how much control I had retained.

I had deliberately kept my financial life private.

At first, it was because I wanted a marriage built on love.

Later, it was because I had begun to suspect that Adrian loved the possibilities attached to my surname more than he loved me.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a message from my assistant, Sophie.

*SOPHIE: Everything is ready for tonight. Celeste has approved the final seating chart.*

I replied:

*ME: Perfect. I'll see you shortly.*

I picked up my clutch and headed downstairs.

My driver was waiting outside.

The moment I entered the car, I noticed a small black gift box on the passenger seat.

There was a handwritten note attached.

For the woman who deserves the world. A.

I opened it.

Inside was a delicate diamond bracelet.

For a moment, I felt ridiculous for being suspicious of my husband.

Maybe I had been overthinking things.

Maybe the distance between us really was temporary.

I slipped the bracelet onto my wrist.

Then I noticed something strange.

The box had a receipt tucked beneath the velvet.

The purchase date was yesterday.

The name on the receipt wasn't mine.

It read:

*VANESSA REED.*

I stared at it.

My driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror.

"Everything all right, Mrs. Vale?""

I closed the box.

"Yes, thank you.""

But my fingers had gone cold.

I searched Vanessa's name on my phone.

A photograph appeared almost immediately.

Vanessa Reed.

Thirty-one.

Fashion influencer.

Occasional brand ambassador.

And, according to the photograph posted twelve hours earlier, she was wearing the exact same bracelet.

Her caption read:

When someone finally treats you like the queen you are.

I looked at the photograph for a long time.

Then I noticed the background.

Adrian's penthouse.

My husband had bought his mistress a bracelet.

And somehow, he'd arranged for the gift box to be delivered to me.

I didn't cry.

I didn't call him.

I simply took a screenshot.

Then I sent it to Sophie.

*ME: Can you find out who approved Vanessa Reed's invitation?*

Her reply came thirty seconds later.

*SOPHIE: Already checking. Is something wrong?*

I looked out at the Paris streets.

"Apparently," I whispered.

And for the first time in seven years, I began to wonder whether Adrian had ever known the real woman he married.

When I arrived at the venue, the atmosphere was electric.

A massive illuminated sign displayed the name of the collection.

*MOREAU — THE FUTURE OF COUTURE.*

Photographers crowded the entrance.

Fashion editors hurried between velvet ropes. Models in extravagant gowns moved through the backstage corridors.

Sophie spotted me immediately.

"Eleanor!""

She hurried over, carrying a tablet.

"You look incredible.""

"Thank you. Is Celeste here?""

"She's in the executive lounge. She asked for you.""

I nodded.

Then Sophie glanced at the emerald necklace.

Her smile disappeared.

"Eleanor, I need to tell you something.""

"What is it?""

She lowered her voice.

"Someone changed the front-row seating chart this afternoon.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"Adrian.""

I stared at her.

"Adrian doesn't have authority over the seating chart.""

"I know. That's why I rejected the change.""

"Then why are you worried?""

Sophie hesitated.

"Because he submitted another version through the corporate events account. It listed Vanessa Reed as your replacement.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

"He replaced me?""

"He tried.""

I looked toward the main hall.

The lights were beginning to dim.

"Where is my seat?""

"Front row. Seat One. Exactly where it belongs.""

I nodded.

"Thank you, Sophie.""

She caught my arm.

"Eleanor, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Adrian requested access to the private executive suite. He said you had authorized it.""

I went still.

"I didn't.""

"I thought so.""

Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.

Adrian.

I answered.

"Where are you?"" he demanded.

"At the venue.""

"Good. Stay away from the front row.""

I frowned.

"Excuse me?""

"I have guests to entertain. Don't make this difficult.""

"Adrian, what exactly are you talking about?""

He sighed impatiently.

"Vanessa is sitting with me tonight. It's important for her career.""

"And my seat?""

"Don't start.""

I looked at the white card in my hand.

"My name is on the seating chart.""

"Not anymore.""

I heard Vanessa laughing in the background.

Then Adrian said something that made my blood run cold.

"By the way, don't wear that necklace tonight. Vanessa likes it.""

I stared at the phone.

"What did you say?""

"You heard me.""

He hung up.

For several seconds, I stood completely still.

Sophie watched my face.

"Eleanor?""

I looked down at my mother's emerald necklace.

Then I lifted my chin.

"Let's go to the front row.""

When the runway show began, I discovered that Adrian had gone further than I imagined.

Vanessa was sitting in my seat.

Wearing my mother's necklace.

And Adrian was standing beside her, smiling for the photographers.

That was when I had shouted his name.

That was when he'd told me to go home.

And that was when Celeste Moreau had walked down the runway to defend me.

Now, as the guests watched in stunned silence, Celeste extended her hand.

"Eleanor, darling. Are you all right?""

I nodded.

"I'm fine.""

She looked at the necklace.

"Isabelle's emerald?""

"Yes.""

Celeste's expression softened.

"I remember the day your mother bought that stone. She told me she wanted you to wear it when you finally understood your own worth.""

My throat tightened.

"She did.""

Vanessa shifted uncomfortably.

"Look, this is getting ridiculous. Adrian gave me the necklace. I didn't steal anything.""

Celeste turned toward her.

"Young lady, that necklace was purchased by Isabelle Vale in Geneva in 1998. Its ownership was transferred to Eleanor in her mother's will. I personally witnessed the transfer.""

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Celeste, surely we can handle this privately.""

Celeste gave him a cold look.

"Privately? You publicly insulted the principal owner of this event in front of hundreds of guests.""

Adrian swallowed.

"I didn't know—"

"That is precisely your problem, Mr. Cole.""

Celeste turned to security.

"Please escort Miss Reed away from the owner's seat.""

Vanessa stood abruptly.

"Adrian!""

He didn't move.

She looked at him in disbelief.

"You said you controlled this place!""

Adrian's face tightened.

"Vanessa, not now.""

"You told me she was just a silent investor!""

Celeste's eyebrows lifted.

I looked at Adrian.

"Is that what you told her?""

He said nothing.

Celeste took the emerald necklace from Vanessa's trembling hands and placed it carefully in mine.

Then she leaned closer.

"There's something else you should know, Eleanor.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

Celeste glanced at Adrian.

"Your husband wasn't supposed to be here tonight as a guest.""

She paused.

"He was supposed to be here to sign something.""

My heart began to pound.

"What was he supposed to sign?""

Celeste opened the leather folder she had been carrying.

Inside was a document bearing the official seal of Moreau Fashion Group.

Adrian's name appeared on the final page.

So did mine.

And at the bottom, in bold letters, was a phrase I had never authorized.

*TRANSFER OF CONTROLLING INTEREST.*

I looked up.

Adrian was no longer merely embarrassed.

He looked terrified.

Because now I understood.

He hadn't come to Fashion Week to celebrate my success.

He had come to take it.

And Vanessa hadn't simply been wearing my mother's necklace.

She had been wearing the confidence of a woman who believed my husband was about to make her the queen of an empire that was never his.

Celeste closed the folder.

"Perhaps," she said, "we should discuss why your husband has been attempting to transfer your shares without your consent.""

I turned toward Adrian.

"Tell me she's wrong.""

He stared at me.

His silence was answer enough.

But then Celeste said the words that changed everything.

"There's one more signature on this agreement, Eleanor.""

She turned the final page toward me.

May you like

And I recognized the name immediately.

It belonged to someone I trusted more than anyone else in the world.
