Chapter 9: The Child We Lost

My father's face stared back at me from the photograph.

Older than I remembered.

Angrier.

Standing beside the hospital entrance with one hand resting on Miriam's shoulder.

I looked at her.

"You knew he was alive?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Evelyn corrected her.

"He wanted you to think he was dead.""

I couldn't breathe.

"My father died when I was sixteen.""

"No," Evelyn said.

"He disappeared.""

"Why?""

"Because he was running from the law.""

Miriam whispered, "For what?""

Evelyn looked at her.

"For stealing children.""

The words struck the room like a gunshot.

Elena stared at me.

"Your father was involved in trafficking?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Not exactly.""

She walked toward a filing cabinet.

"He arranged illegal adoptions.""

"Why?""

"Money.""

I looked at the photograph.

"And that night?""

"He had two babies.""

"Mine and Thomas's?""

Evelyn nodded.

"And he switched them.""

"Why?""

"Because one baby was valuable.""

I understood.

"The Hale trust.""

"Yes.""

"Thomas's child.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"Your father's mistake was assuming Elena was Thomas's daughter.""

I looked at Miriam.

"And our son?""

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"He was the valuable one.""

"Where is he?""

She hesitated.

"That's why I asked you to come.""

She unlocked the filing cabinet.

Inside were old medical records.

Birth logs.

Nurse reports.

Photographs.

She pulled out a thin folder.

The label read:

*BABY BOY — HALE CASE*

My hands shook.

"That's him?""

"That's the record.""

I opened it.

Birth weight.

Time of birth.

Blood type.

A tiny footprint.

Then a name.

Not a real name.

Just a number.

*Infant 47.*

"Why was he called that?""

"Because your father never registered him.""

I looked at Miriam.

She was crying.

"What happened?""

Evelyn swallowed.

"He was taken from the hospital.""

"By my father?""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

"To a private adoption agency.""

Claire stepped forward.

"Which one?""

Evelyn gave her the name.

Claire immediately searched it on her phone.

Her face went pale.

"They closed fifteen years ago.""

"Records?""

"Sealed.""

I clenched my fists.

"How do we find him?""

Evelyn looked at me.

"We already did.""

I stared.

"What?""

She reached into the folder.

A current photograph.

A man in his late twenties.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A small scar near his right eyebrow.

The same scar Thomas had.

I stared at the photograph.

"Who is this?""

Evelyn whispered the name.

"Lucas Carter.""

Miriam covered her mouth.

"He's alive?""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

Evelyn pointed to the photograph.

"He lives twenty miles from here.""

I felt dizzy.

"Twenty miles?""

"He has no idea who he is.""

Elena stared at the picture.

"He looks like Dad.""

I looked at her.

She was right.

The man's eyes were mine.

His jaw was Thomas's.

A strange mixture of both brothers.

I reached for the photograph.

My fingers trembled.

"How do you know he's our son?""

Evelyn gave me another paper.

"DNA.""

I read the report.

Lucas Carter.

Daniel Hale.

Probability of biological relationship: *99.9999%.*

I couldn't speak.

Twenty-seven years.

My son had been alive.

Twenty miles away.

And I had never known.

Miriam collapsed into a chair.

"I thought he was dead.""

"I know," Evelyn said.

"I searched for him.""

"I know.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I tried.""

Miriam looked up.

"How?""

Evelyn's eyes moved toward Elena.

"Because Robert found me first.""

"What did he do?""

"He threatened me.""

"With what?""

"Your son.""

Silence.

I stepped forward.

"Where is Lucas now?""

Evelyn looked frightened.

"He's in danger.""

"From Robert?""

"From Mark.""

Claire shook her head.

"Mark is in custody.""

"Not anymore.""

We all froze.

"What?""

Evelyn pointed toward the window.

"His lawyer got him released.""

I checked my phone.

There were twelve missed calls.

All from an unknown number.

Then a text appeared.

*You found him.*

Another arrived.

*Congratulations, Dad.*

My blood went cold.

Elena saw the screen.

"Mark knows.""

A third message appeared.

*Come to the lake house. Bring Elena.*

Then another.

*Come alone, or Lucas dies.*

I looked at Miriam.

"Where is the lake house?""

She knew immediately.

"Thomas's.""

The same place from the photograph.

We drove there with Claire following in another car.

The lake was dark beneath the evening sky.

Thomas's old cabin stood at the end of a narrow road.

The porch light was on.

I stopped the car.

"Stay here.""

Elena shook her head.

"No.""

"Elena—"

"He said bring me.""

"I know.""

"Then I'm going.""

We entered together.

The cabin smelled of smoke.

A single lamp burned in the living room.

Someone was sitting beside it.

A young man.

Lucas.

His hands were tied.

His face was bruised.

I stopped breathing.

"Lucas.""

He looked at me.

His eyes narrowed.

"Who are you?""

I couldn't answer.

Elena stepped forward.

"He's your father.""

Lucas looked at me.

"What?""

I walked toward him.

"My name is Daniel.""

He stared.

"I don't know you.""

"I know.""

"Then why are you here?""

"Because I've been looking for you.""

Lucas laughed bitterly.

"You don't even know me.""

"No.""

I knelt beside him.

"But I know I should have.""

His eyes softened.

For one second, he looked like a frightened child.

Then a voice came from behind us.

"Touching.""

Mark stepped out of the shadows.

He held a gun.

Elena froze.

Mark smiled.

"You finally found the missing son.""

I stood.

"You killed my brother.""

"I didn't.""

"You tried to kill me.""

"I still might.""

Lucas looked at Mark.

"Why am I here?""

Mark laughed.

"Because your father has something I want.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"The truth.""

I frowned.

"You already know the truth.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"I know what Robert told me.""

Then he looked at Elena.

"But Robert lied to me too.""

Elena's eyes narrowed.

"About what?""

Mark smiled.

"About your inheritance.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"She doesn't have an inheritance.""

"Exactly.""

"What?""

Mark pointed at Elena.

"The trust was never hers.""

I stared at him.

"Whose was it?""

He smiled.

"Lucas's.""

Silence.

Mark continued.

"Thomas wasn't Elena's father.""

He pointed at Lucas.

"Thomas was his.""

Lucas looked confused.

"Then why did everyone think Elena was the heir?""

"Because the hospital records were switched.""

I stepped toward Mark.

"And you knew.""

"Yes.""

"Then why marry Elena?""

"Because Robert told me Lucas was dead.""

Lucas stared at him.

"And now?""

Mark's smile disappeared.

"Now I need both of you.""

"Why?""

"Because the trust has one final condition.""

He pulled a document from his jacket.

I recognized Thomas's handwriting.

My brother's.

Mark held it up.

"Thomas left the entire inheritance to his biological son.""

Lucas stared.

"But there's a second condition.""

He turned the page.

"The son cannot claim the trust until his biological father confirms his identity.""

I felt my blood run cold.

Mark looked at me.

"That's why I need you alive.""

Elena stepped between us.

"You said you would kill him.""

Mark smiled.

"I changed my mind.""

"Why?""

"Because I just found out something much better.""

He raised the gun.

"Daniel isn't Lucas's biological father.""

I stared at him.

"Then who is?""

Mark's smile returned.

"Robert.""

The cabin door slammed open.

Robert stood behind us.

He looked at Lucas.

Then at me.

And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

"Mark," he said quietly.

"What did you do?""

Mark turned.

"I found your secret.""

Robert's face went white.

Mark lifted the document.

"You didn't steal Thomas's trust.""

He looked at me.

"You stole something much bigger.""

Then he said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew about my family.

"Lucas isn't Thomas's son.""

May you like

He pointed at Robert.

"He's yours.""
