Chapter 2: The Man Who Came Back

I didn't sleep.

At six in the morning, I was sitting at my brother's old table with the photograph spread in front of me.

I had zoomed into it so many times that the image had become grainy.

Robert.

Mark.

The unknown woman.

A courthouse.

A bank logo.

I called the number that had texted me.

It went straight to voicemail.

I tried again.

Nothing.

Then I searched through every message.

There were only three.

No name.

No signature.

No clue.

At 7:12, another text arrived.

*Come to the old train station. Platform 3. 8:00 a.m. Come alone.*

I almost deleted it.

Instead, I went.

The station had been abandoned for years.

Weeds grew between the tracks.

The old brick walls were stained dark from decades of rain.

At 7:58, I saw a woman standing near the far bench.

She wore a gray coat and held a black leather folder against her chest.

She turned when she heard my footsteps.

I recognized her immediately.

The woman from the photograph.

"You're Daniel," she said.

"Who are you?""

"My name is Claire.""

"What do you want?""

She looked around.

"First, I need you to believe me.""

"That's not going to happen.""

She gave a sad smile.

"Fair enough.""

She opened the folder.

Inside were bank statements.

Contracts.

Copies of emails.

Photographs.

I picked up the first document.

It was a bank transfer.

My eyes moved down the page.

The recipient was a company I'd never heard of.

"What's this?""

"Mark's company.""

I looked at her.

"Mark doesn't have a company.""

"He does.""

"When?""

"Six months ago.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

Claire pulled out another document.

"His company was registered under a different name. Then he changed directors.""

"Why?""

"Because someone was looking into it.""

I stared at the papers.

"What does this have to do with Elena?""

Claire hesitated.

"Everything.""

I turned another page.

There were transfers.

Large ones.

Money moving between accounts.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Robert Hale.

I felt my stomach turn.

"Robert?""

Claire nodded.

"Your stepdaughter's biological father.""

"I know who he is.""

"Then you know he has a gambling problem.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"He lost almost everything three years ago.""

"Elena doesn't know that.""

"She wasn't supposed to.""

Claire slid another document toward me.

"Mark found out.""

My fingers went cold.

"Why would Mark care?""

"Because Robert owed money.""

"To whom?""

Claire didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

I understood.

"Mark?""

She nodded.

I stepped back.

"No.""

"Daniel—"

"No. Mark isn't involved in that.""

"He is.""

"He's marrying Elena.""

"That's why I'm trying to stop it.""

I looked at the documents again.

"Why are you doing this?""

Claire's eyes filled with something that looked like anger.

"Because my sister married a man like Mark.""

I waited.

"She lost everything.""

Claire's voice became quieter.

"Her house. Her savings. Her business.""

"What happened to her?""

"She died last year.""

I said nothing.

"Officially, it was an accident.""

"And unofficially?""

Claire closed the folder.

"She had been trying to leave him.""

A train horn sounded somewhere in the distance.

I stared at Claire.

"You're saying Mark killed your sister?""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"I'm saying I don't know what happened to her.""

That distinction frightened me more.

"What does Robert have to do with it?""

"Robert introduced Mark to people who could help him.""

"Help him do what?""

"Get close to wealthy families.""

My chest tightened.

"Elena isn't wealthy.""

Claire looked directly at me.

"She will be.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Claire reached into her folder and removed a copy of an old insurance document.

She placed it in my hand.

My name was printed across the top.

So was Miriam's.

And Elena's.

I read the amount.

My throat went dry.

"Where did you get this?""

"From a records office.""

"This policy is twenty years old.""

"I know.""

I looked at Elena's name.

Then Miriam's.

Then mine.

"What am I looking at?""

Claire leaned closer.

"Your life insurance policy.""

I stared at her.

"Why would you care?""

"Because the beneficiary changed three months ago.""

I looked up sharply.

"To whom?""

Claire didn't answer.

She pointed to the bottom of the page.

I read the name.

Robert Hale.

My hands began shaking.

"That's not possible.""

"It was changed electronically.""

"I never changed it.""

"Exactly.""

The station seemed to tilt beneath me.

"Someone forged my authorization.""

Claire nodded.

"And they did the same thing with another account.""

"What account?""

"Your retirement fund.""

I closed my eyes.

I had spent twenty years building that account.

Every overtime shift.

Every weekend job.

Every Christmas when I bought Elena gifts instead of buying myself anything.

All of it.

"How much?""

Claire told me.

I opened my eyes.

"That's impossible.""

"That's the amount currently accessible.""

"Currently?""

"Yes.""

I looked at her.

"Why would they need my retirement?""

"Because someone is desperate.""

"Robert?""

"Robert and Mark.""

I walked toward the edge of the platform.

For twenty years, I had thought Robert was a coward.

A man who ran away.

A man who couldn't handle responsibility.

But this was different.

This was deliberate.

Someone had been planning something.

And Elena was standing in the center of it.

I took out my phone.

"I need to call her.""

Claire grabbed my wrist.

"No.""

I pulled away.

"She's my daughter.""

"Not yet.""

"What does that mean?""

Claire looked frightened.

"Daniel, if Mark knows you've discovered this, he'll change the plan.""

"What plan?""

Before she could answer, a black SUV rolled slowly past the station entrance.

Claire went pale.

"They found us.""

"Who?""

She grabbed the folder.

"Run.""

We moved behind the old station building.

The SUV stopped.

Two men stepped out.

One of them was Robert.

The other was Mark.

I pressed myself against the brick wall.

I could hear Mark's voice.

"She shouldn't have contacted him.""

Robert answered.

"I told you Claire would cause trouble.""

Mark laughed.

"Tomorrow solves everything.""

My pulse hammered.

Robert said, "And Daniel?""

Mark's voice became cold.

"He won't be a problem after tonight.""

I looked at Claire.

She covered her mouth.

Then Mark said something that made my blood turn cold.

"Once Elena marries me, the money transfers automatically.""

A pause.

Robert chuckled.

"And the old man?""

Mark replied:

"By tomorrow night, everyone will think his death was suicide.""

Claire's hand found mine.

Neither of us moved.

Then a stone rolled beneath my shoe.

Mark stopped talking.

"Did you hear that?""

His footsteps started toward us.

Claire whispered, "Don't breathe.""

The footsteps came closer.

Closer.

May you like

Then Mark's voice sounded directly on the other side of the wall.

"Daniel?""
