Chapter 5: What Miriam Had Hidden

We drove toward the old house anyway.

I knew it was a trap.

That was exactly why I couldn't stay away.

If Robert had Miriam, every second mattered.

Elena sat beside me, gripping the envelope so tightly the paper had folded in her fist.

Claire sat in the back seat.

Nobody spoke for several minutes.

Finally Elena said, "Tell me about Thomas.""

I kept my eyes on the road.

"He was reckless.""

She almost smiled.

"That doesn't sound like a compliment.""

"It wasn't.""

"What was he like?""

I thought about my brother.

"He could walk into a room full of strangers and leave with ten friends.""

Elena looked down.

"Mom loved him.""

"Yes.""

"Did he love her?""

I hesitated.

"I think so.""

"Did you know?""

"I knew they were close.""

"How close?""

I tightened my hands around the wheel.

"I didn't ask.""

"Why?""

"Because I was younger. I thought whatever was happening between them wasn't my business.""

Elena stared through the windshield.

"Maybe it was.""

She was right.

Twenty-seven years ago, Thomas had come home unexpectedly.

He'd stayed with Miriam for several weeks.

Then he left.

A month later, he died.

I had never connected those events.

Until now.

We reached the old house just before noon.

My truck was parked outside.

The driver's door was open.

Elena whispered, "Dad...""

I got out.

The front door stood open.

I motioned for them to stay behind me.

Inside, the house smelled of dust and damp wood.

There were fresh footprints across the floor.

Someone had been here recently.

"Miriam?""

No answer.

I moved through the hallway.

A chair had been overturned.

A lamp was broken.

Then I saw blood on the wall.

Elena gasped.

I turned.

"Stay here.""

"No.""

"Elena.""

"I said no.""

She walked past me.

We reached the kitchen.

Miriam was sitting on the floor.

Her hands were tied.

There was blood at her temple.

"Mom!""

Elena dropped beside her.

Miriam opened her eyes.

"Elena?""

"I'm here.""

Miriam looked past her.

"Daniel...""

"I'm here.""

She began crying.

"You weren't supposed to find out this way.""

I knelt beside her.

"Who did this?""

She looked at Elena.

"Robert.""

I clenched my jaw.

"Where is he?""

"He left.""

"When?""

"Minutes ago.""

I cut the ropes.

Claire helped Miriam stand.

Then Miriam looked at me.

"Daniel, you need to listen.""

"I'm listening.""

"Thomas wasn't just your brother.""

I froze.

"What do you mean?""

She swallowed.

"He was Elena's biological father.""

Elena closed her eyes.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then she whispered, "I knew it.""

Miriam looked at her.

"You knew?""

"I suspected.""

Miriam's face crumpled.

"I'm sorry.""

Elena stepped back.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Thomas died before you were born.""

"You could have told me his name.""

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

Miriam looked at me.

"Of losing you both.""

I stared at her.

"What happened?""

She lowered herself into a chair.

"Thomas and I were together before I met you.""

I nodded slowly.

"I knew.""

"You didn't know everything.""

She looked down at her hands.

"Thomas had debts.""

"How much?""

"Enough that dangerous people were looking for him.""

Claire stepped closer.

"Robert?""

Miriam shook her head.

"Not at first.""

"Then who?""

"Mark's father.""

I felt the room change.

Elena whispered, "Mark's father?""

Miriam nodded.

"He ran a private lending operation.""

Claire's eyes widened.

"That's why Robert knew Mark.""

"Yes.""

I looked at Miriam.

"How did Thomas die?""

"His brakes failed.""

Silence.

My stomach turned.

"The police called it an accident," Miriam continued.

"But Thomas knew someone was following him.""

"You never told me.""

"I had no proof.""

"You could have told me!""

My voice echoed through the kitchen.

Elena flinched.

Miriam began crying.

"I was scared.""

"You let me believe my brother died because he was careless.""

"I was protecting you.""

"From what?""

She looked at me.

"From the same people who are after you now.""

I stared at her.

"Why now?""

"Because Robert discovered the trust.""

Elena stepped closer.

"How?""

"Thomas left instructions.""

Miriam reached inside her coat and pulled out a folded document.

"He knew something might happen to him.""

She handed it to Elena.

"Before he died, he created a trust for his daughter.""

Elena unfolded it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

"My name.""

Miriam nodded.

"Everything Thomas owned was supposed to go to you when you turned twenty-seven.""

"How much?""

Miriam looked at me.

"Enough to make people kill.""

Elena sat down.

I looked at the document.

"Then why did Robert say I controlled her money?""

"Because he wanted you to believe that.""

"Why?""

"To make Elena distrust you.""

The pieces began falling into place.

The wedding.

The accusations.

The sudden return.

Robert's lies.

Mark's manipulation.

The forged documents.

My death.

All of it led back to Elena's inheritance.

Then Claire spoke.

"There's something else.""

Miriam looked at her.

"You.""

Claire opened her folder.

"My sister.""

Miriam's expression changed.

"Anna?""

Claire nodded.

"You knew her.""

Miriam looked away.

"Yes.""

"She came to you before she died.""

Miriam closed her eyes.

"She knew Mark was involved.""

Claire's voice shook.

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because Anna had evidence, but it disappeared.""

"What evidence?""

Miriam looked at me.

"Bank records.""

I understood.

"Robert.""

She nodded.

"Robert helped Mark hide the money.""

Elena stared at the documents.

"So they planned the wedding.""

"Yes.""

"And they needed Dad dead.""

Miriam nodded.

"They planned to make it look like suicide.""

I felt a chill run through me.

Then Miriam said something that stopped all of us.

"But Mark wasn't the one who changed your trust.""

Elena looked up.

"Who did?""

Miriam's eyes filled with tears.

"I did.""

"What?""

"I changed the trust.""

Elena stood.

"Why?""

"Because Thomas left one condition.""

Miriam looked at me.

"He didn't want the money to go to you unless you were surrounded by people he trusted.""

Elena's face tightened.

"What condition?""

Miriam reached for my hand.

I let her take it.

"He named Daniel.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"You were the only person Thomas trusted completely.""

I couldn't speak.

Miriam continued.

"The trust originally named Daniel as permanent protector.""

Elena whispered, "Then why did it change?""

"Because Robert forced me.""

I pulled my hand away.

"How?""

"He threatened Elena.""

The room fell silent.

Miriam looked at her daughter.

"He told me that if I didn't remove Daniel, Elena would die.""

Elena covered her mouth.

"Mom...""

"I thought I could keep you safe.""

"By making Dad look like the villain?""

"I had no choice.""

I looked at Miriam.

"There is always a choice.""

Her eyes filled.

"I know.""

Then the lights went out.

All of them.

The house plunged into darkness.

Claire whispered, "Someone's here.""

A door slammed upstairs.

Then footsteps.

Fast.

Running toward us.

Elena grabbed my arm.

"Who is that?""

I pushed everyone behind me.

The footsteps reached the staircase.

A man's voice came from the darkness.

"You should have stayed away.""

Mark.

I heard him chamber something.

Not a gun.

A phone.

Then he switched on the flashlight.

His face appeared at the top of the stairs.

He was smiling.

But his smile wasn't the one Elena had fallen in love with.

It was cold.

Empty.

He looked directly at her.

"Elena, your mother has been lying to you.""

She stepped forward.

"About what?""

Mark slowly raised his phone.

"I have proof.""

He pressed play.

A recording filled the dark house.

Miriam's voice.

Clear.

Terrified.

"I'll do whatever you want.""

Then another voice.

Robert.

"Good.""

A pause.

"Now tell Daniel that Thomas never loved him.""

I looked at Miriam.

She went white.

The recording continued.

"Because the truth about Thomas is something Daniel must never discover.""

The audio stopped.

May you like

Mark smiled.

"And tomorrow, everyone will.""
