Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in My Husband's Laptop

My mother opened the front door before I could knock.

One look at my face, and she stopped smiling.

“Vanessa?””

I tried to answer.

Nothing came out.

She immediately reached for Poppy.

“Oh, sweetheart. Give me one of the babies.””

I handed her the carrier.

Then I stepped inside.

The familiar smell of lavender detergent and freshly baked bread filled the hallway.

My mother's house had always felt safe.

Even when I was a little girl.

Especially when the world outside became too loud.

But that afternoon, the moment the door closed behind me, I finally broke.

I sat on the edge of the sofa and cried.

Not pretty tears.

Not the quiet kind that slipped down someone's cheek in a movie.

I cried so hard that my chest hurt.

My mother placed Poppy safely in her bassinet and sat beside me.

“Tell me what happened.””

I wiped my face.

“I saw Tyler.””

Her expression softened.

“Did he come back?””

I nodded.

“And?””

I looked at my mother.

“He was kissing another woman.””

She went completely still.

“What?””

“Right there at the waterfront. He wasn't alone. He was with her.””

My mother slowly sat back.

“Who was she?””

“Sloane.””

My mother recognized the name.

She had heard me mention it once or twice when Tyler's behavior started changing.

I swallowed.

“She wasn't just some woman. She's married.””

“To whom?””

“Michael Harrington.””

My mother frowned.

“The businessman?””

I nodded.

Then I handed her the business card.

She examined it.

“Why would her husband be there?””

“He came to confront them.””

My mother looked at me.

“And what did he say?””

I told her everything.

The photographs.

The money.

The business documents.

The black folder.

And the warning.

When I finished, my mother was quiet for a long time.

Then she asked the question I'd been trying not to consider.

“Vanessa, has Tyler ever asked you to sign anything recently?””

I stared at her.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“Some bank forms. He said they were related to our household finances.””

“Did you sign them?””

I looked down.

“One.””

My mother's face changed.

“What kind of form?””

“I don't know. It was a stack of papers. Tyler said he needed my signature because he was handling some financial arrangements before the twins arrived.””

“Did you read them?””

I hesitated.

“No.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

“I know.””

“No, you don't understand. We need to find out exactly what you signed.””

I nodded.

The girls were asleep now.

For the first time that day, the house was quiet.

I went upstairs, put on a comfortable sweater, and returned to the living room with my laptop.

It was the same laptop Tyler had left at the house before traveling.

He had told me to keep it safe because it contained important business files.

I opened it.

The screen lit up.

A password prompt appeared.

I tried our wedding anniversary.

Incorrect.

I tried his birthday.

Incorrect.

Then I remembered something.

Tyler had once told me that he used the twins' expected due date as a password for an account he wanted to remember.

I typed the date.

The laptop unlocked.

My stomach tightened.

The desktop appeared.

There were several folders.

Business.

Travel.

Taxes.

Personal.

And one folder simply labeled:

*HOLDING STRUCTURE.*

I clicked it.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Some were spreadsheets.

Others were scanned contracts and email attachments.

My mother stood behind me.

“Do you recognize any of this?””

I shook my head.

I opened the first spreadsheet.

Several columns appeared.

Company names.

Dates.

Payments.

Account numbers.

And then I saw something familiar.

Our address.

The house Tyler and I had purchased two years earlier.

I leaned closer.

“Mom?””

“What?””

“Why is our house listed here?””

She bent over my shoulder.

I scrolled down.

There was a section labeled PROPERTY TRANSFERS.

The document showed the estimated value of our home, the outstanding mortgage, and a proposed transfer date.

I read the next line twice.

Proposed beneficial ownership: Harrington-related entity.

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

My mother didn't answer.

She pulled a chair closer.

“Keep looking.””

I opened another file.

This one was a scanned agreement.

My name appeared near the bottom.

Vanessa Claire Reed.

My signature was underneath.

I stopped breathing.

“No.””

My mother looked at the screen.

“Is that your signature?””

“Yes.””

The document was dated four months earlier.

It appeared to be a financial authorization.

But the wording was complicated.

I scrolled down.

Then I saw a section that made my hands go cold.

It referenced a guarantee connected to a private business loan.

My name.

My address.

And an amount that made my eyes widen.

$850,000.

“Mom.””

She leaned closer.

“What?””

“Why would I guarantee a loan for that much money?””

My mother read the paragraph.

Then she looked at me.

“Did Tyler tell you this was what you were signing?””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“He said it was paperwork for our family savings account.””

My mother placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Don't touch anything else until we've made copies and spoken to a lawyer.””

I nodded.

But my eyes had already moved to another document.

It was an email chain.

The first message was from Tyler.

The recipient was Sloane.

The subject line read:

*VANESSA'S SIGNATURE — FINAL DOCUMENTS.*

I clicked it.

The email was dated two months earlier.

Tyler had written:

Everything is in place. She signed the authorization without asking questions. Once the transfer clears, we'll be able to move forward without any complications.

I covered my mouth.

The reply came from Sloane.

And what about Michael?

Tyler had answered:

He won't know until it's too late.

My mother slowly straightened.

“Oh, my God.””

I kept reading.

Sloane's next message was short.

What about the children?

Tyler replied:

Vanessa will be too busy with the babies to fight over anything. We just need a few more weeks.

I stared at the words.

Too busy with the babies.

I read them again.

Then again.

A sound escaped my throat.

It wasn't quite a sob.

It was something worse.

I had spent months worrying about whether Tyler was eating properly.

Whether he was sleeping enough.

Whether his flights were safe.

Whether he was lonely.

Meanwhile, he had been discussing how to use my pregnancy and the arrival of our daughters as an opportunity.

My mother wrapped her arms around me.

“Vanessa, listen to me. We're going to handle this.””

I shook my head.

“He knew.””

“What?””

“He knew I was pregnant. He knew I was going to have the girls. He knew I trusted him.””

My mother held me tighter.

“I know.””

“He let me sign something that could put our home at risk.””

“We don't know the legal effect yet.””

I looked at the screen.

“And he planned it with her.””

My mother reached for her phone.

“I'm calling an attorney.””

Before she could dial, another email appeared.

A new message.

From Michael Harrington.

My heart jumped.

The subject line read:

*URGENT — VANESSA REED.*

I opened it.

There were only three sentences.

Vanessa, if you have found the holding structure documents, do not confront Tyler yet.

The signature on the $850,000 authorization is not the only issue.

I need to speak with you before Monday morning.

My mother stared at the screen.

“Who is he?””

I didn't answer.

I opened the attachment.

It was a scanned document.

At the top was the name of a company.

Harrington Global Holdings.

Below it was a list of authorized parties.

Michael Harrington.

Sloane Harrington.

Tyler Reed.

I frowned.

Why was Tyler listed as an authorized party?

I scrolled down.

There was a date.

A date from six months earlier.

And underneath it, a paragraph describing an arrangement between the company and Tyler's consulting business.

I opened another attachment.

This time, it was a payment schedule.

Several payments had been made.

The first was for $25,000.

The second was for $40,000.

The third was for $75,000.

All had gone into an account associated with Tyler's company.

But the final entry was different.

It was marked:

*PENDING APPROVAL — $500,000.*

The approval date was scheduled for Monday.

I looked at my mother.

“Why would Michael send me this?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

I scrolled to the bottom of the email.

There was another line.

Your husband believes the company has approved the final payment. It has not.

I felt a strange chill move down my spine.

Then another email arrived.

This one was from Tyler.

My mother and I stared at the sender's name.

He had sent it to me.

The subject line was simple.

*WE NEED TO TALK.*

I opened it.

Vanessa, I know you've been asking questions.

I want you to understand that everything I've done has been for our future.

Don't let Michael manipulate you.

I will come by tomorrow morning. Have the documents ready.

Then came the final sentence.

And Vanessa, don't make the mistake of thinking those girls give you control over what happens next.

I read it twice.

My mother took the laptop from me.

“That's enough. We're saving everything.””

But before she could close the email, I noticed something at the very bottom.

A forwarded message.

The sender was Tyler.

The recipient was an address I didn't recognize.

The subject line read:

*PLAN B — IF VANESSA FINDS OUT.*

I clicked it.

There was one sentence.

If she starts asking about the signatures, we'll have to tell her the twins were never the real reason for the money.

My blood ran cold.

I looked at my mother.

“What does that mean?””

She didn't answer.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered cautiously.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through.

“Vanessa? This is Michael Harrington.””

I gripped the phone.

“Yes.””

“Have you opened the documents I sent?””

“Yes. I have.””

“Good. Then I need you to listen very carefully.””

I glanced at my mother.

“What's going on?””

Michael took a breath.

“Your husband believes he has been working with my wife to acquire control of a company.””

I frowned.

“What company?””

There was a pause.

Then Michael said something that made my entire body go still.

“The company your husband has been trying to take over is not mine.””

I looked at the laptop.

Harrington Global Holdings.

The payments.

The signatures.

The mysterious authorization.

“Then whose company is it?””

Michael's voice dropped.

“Yours, Vanessa.””

I couldn't speak.

He continued.

“Your father established it before he died. And according to the original trust documents, you are the sole beneficiary.””

I stared at my mother.

She had gone completely pale.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Michael paused.

“And there's something else. Your husband doesn't know that the trust has a second controlling document.””

“What document?””

“The one that determines who inherits the company if you become unable to exercise your rights.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

Michael was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“Your twins.””

I looked toward the bassinet.

Piper and Poppy were sleeping peacefully, completely unaware that the adults around them had been discussing their future as though it were a business transaction.

My voice came out barely above a whisper.

“Why would Tyler be involved in any of this?””

Michael answered immediately.

“Because he has spent the last five months trying to get his hands on something that doesn't belong to him.””

Then he added:

“And tomorrow, Vanessa, he's going to come to your house believing you still have no idea what you've inherited.””

The call ended.

I lowered the phone.

My mother stood beside me, her hands trembling.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I looked at the laptop again.

At the email.

At the signature.

At the name of the company my father had apparently left behind.

And I realized something.

Tyler hadn't simply been cheating on me.

He had been planning to take something from me.

Something valuable enough that he had been willing to abandon his own children to get it.

But Michael had just told me that the twins were named in the trust.

May you like

And suddenly, the most important question wasn't what Tyler wanted.

It was what he would do when he discovered that Piper and Poppy stood between him and everything he'd spent five months trying to steal.
