Chapter 2: The Man Who Came Back Early

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The black SUV idled behind Michael.

A few travelers had stopped walking. Someone near the entrance was recording on a phone.

Tyler looked increasingly uncomfortable.

Sloane looked terrified.

And I stood there holding two sleeping babies, wondering how an ordinary afternoon had turned into something that felt like the final scene of a movie.

Michael closed the SUV door.

“Vanessa, isn't it?”” he asked.

I nodded cautiously.

“Yes.””

He glanced at the twins.

“Piper and Poppy?””

My stomach tightened.

“How do you know their names?””

Michael looked at Sloane.

She immediately stepped forward.

“Michael, don't.””

He didn't acknowledge her.

“I've seen their photographs.””

“Where?”” I asked.

“That's something I can explain.””

Tyler stepped between us.

“Excuse me. Why are you talking to my wife?””

Michael slowly turned his head.

“Your wife?””

Tyler lifted his chin.

“Yes. My wife. The woman I'm married to.””

Michael studied him for a moment.

Then he looked at Sloane.

“Interesting.””

Sloane grabbed his sleeve.

“Michael, we need to talk privately.””

“We've had plenty of private conversations, Sloane.””

“Please.””

“Five months of them, actually.””

Her face drained of color.

Five months.

The same five months Tyler had been away.

I looked at Michael.

Then at Sloane.

Something about those words made my stomach turn.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Michael finally opened the black folder.

Inside were several printed photographs.

He removed the first one.

It showed Sloane and Tyler sitting at an outdoor restaurant.

His hand was on her waist.

Her head rested against his shoulder.

The date was printed in the corner.

Five months earlier.

My knees weakened.

Michael placed another photograph on top.

This one showed them entering a hotel.

Then another.

A photograph of Tyler carrying shopping bags outside an expensive jewelry store.

Sloane was holding his hand.

I stared at the images.

Tyler looked away.

“Those pictures don't prove anything.””

Michael raised an eyebrow.

“Really?””

“People have lunch together.””

“And spend the night together?””

Sloane grabbed the photographs.

“Stop it!””

Michael calmly retrieved them.

“Careful. Those are copies.””

Tyler's face reddened.

“Listen, man. Whatever problem you have with your wife is between you two. Don't involve me.””

Michael's gaze settled on him.

“You're right about one thing. My problem is with my wife.””

He paused.

“But you made yourself part of it.””

Tyler folded his arms.

“I don't know what you think you can do.””

Michael gave a small, humorless smile.

“That's becoming very clear.””

I shifted Poppy in my arms.

My back ached.

My shoulders were burning.

I'd barely slept the previous night because both girls had been unsettled, and the last thing I needed was to stand in the middle of a confrontation between two men.

But I couldn't leave.

Not yet.

Not while Tyler stood there pretending the photographs meant nothing.

I looked at him.

“Were you seeing her before you left?””

He didn't answer.

“Tyler.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Vanessa, this is not the time.””

“When was the time? Before I gave birth? After? While I was in the hospital?””

Sloane suddenly laughed.

It was a sharp, nervous sound.

“Honestly, Vanessa, you should stop acting like Tyler owes you his entire life.””

I turned toward her.

“He married me.””

“And people change.””

“He has two daughters.””

“Which is why he should have a chance to live his life without being constantly guilted.””

I stared at her.

“Are you listening to yourself?””

She rolled her eyes.

“I'm not going to argue with someone who clearly can't accept reality.””

Michael closed the folder.

“Sloane.””

She turned.

“What?””

“Don't speak to her that way.””

Sloane looked genuinely offended.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

“Michael, you don't get to walk in here and start giving me orders.””

“I haven't given you an order.””

“Then what are you doing?””

Michael looked at the photographs.

“Giving you an opportunity to tell the truth.””

Tyler laughed.

“Oh, this is ridiculous.””

He turned to me.

“Vanessa, let's go.””

I blinked.

“Where?””

“Home.””

I almost dropped my bag.

“You just told me you had plans.””

“I've changed my mind.””

“Because your girlfriend's husband arrived?””

Tyler stepped closer.

“Don't start.””

I took a step backward.

Piper stirred.

Her little mouth opened, and she began to cry.

The sound broke through the tension.

I lowered my face and gently kissed her forehead.

“It's okay, sweetheart. Mommy's here.””

For a moment, I forgot about the three adults standing around me.

I thought about the girls' nursery.

The little white cribs.

The tiny stuffed rabbits I'd placed beside their pillows.

The pink blankets my mother had sewn.

I'd built a world for them with whatever strength I had left.

And Tyler had treated it like something he could visit whenever convenient.

Michael's voice interrupted my thoughts.

“Vanessa, do you have someone who can help you with the babies?””

I looked up.

“My mother is waiting at home.””

“Good.””

He glanced toward his driver.

“Daniel, bring the second vehicle around.””

The driver nodded.

Sloane stepped forward.

“Where are you going?””

Michael didn't look at her.

“That's none of your concern.””

“I'm your wife!””

“Are you?””

The question was so quiet that it seemed to frighten her more than shouting would have.

Sloane stared at him.

“What is that supposed to mean?””

Michael finally faced her.

“Have you forgotten what you signed?””

Her lips parted.

Then closed.

Tyler looked between them.

“What did she sign?””

Sloane grabbed Tyler's hand.

“Nothing. He's trying to scare me.””

Michael removed a single sheet from the folder.

He didn't hand it over.

He simply looked at it.

“On the seventeenth of June, you transferred money from our joint investment account.””

Sloane went still.

Michael continued.

“On the twenty-second, you requested a change to the beneficiary information on one of our policies.””

“Michael—”

“On the twenty-ninth, you told our attorney that you wanted to restructure the ownership of two properties.””

Tyler's hand slowly slipped away from hers.

Sloane shook her head.

“Those were financial arrangements.””

“Without my knowledge.””

“Because you were never home!””

Michael nodded once.

“That's an interesting defense.””

He put the paper back inside the folder.

“Especially considering where you were spending your time.””

Tyler stepped forward.

“Look, whatever money you're arguing about, leave me out of it.””

Michael's eyes narrowed slightly.

“Did you receive money from my wife?””

Tyler hesitated.

Just a fraction of a second.

But I saw it.

So did Michael.

Sloane immediately interrupted.

“Michael, don't you dare.””

Michael looked at Tyler.

“Did you?””

Tyler straightened his jacket.

“I don't discuss my finances with strangers.””

Michael gave a small nod.

“Fair enough.””

He turned toward his driver.

“Daniel, make sure the documents are delivered to the attorney's office.””

“Certainly, sir.””

Sloane suddenly looked panicked.

“Wait. What documents?””

Michael didn't answer.

She followed him.

“Michael! What have you done?””

He stopped beside the SUV.

“I came home.””

“You weren't supposed to be back until next month!””

The words came out before she could stop them.

Michael turned.

There it was.

The truth.

She hadn't expected him.

She had been counting on his absence.

And suddenly I wondered how much of her relationship with Tyler had depended on that simple fact.

Michael looked at her.

“I know.””

Sloane's eyes filled with tears.

“Please. We can talk about this at home.””

“I'm not going home with you.””

Her mouth trembled.

“Then where are you going?””

Michael looked toward the waterfront.

“Somewhere I can think without listening to lies.””

He opened the passenger door.

Then stopped.

“Vanessa?””

I looked at him.

“Yes?””

“I owe you an explanation.””

“About what?””

He glanced toward Tyler.

“About why your husband has been receiving money from my wife's accounts.””

The world seemed to tilt.

I looked at Tyler.

His face had gone pale.

“What?””

Tyler immediately shook his head.

“Don't listen to him.””

Michael continued.

“And about why your husband's name appears in documents connected to a company I own.””

I stared at him.

“What company?””

Michael reached into his folder and removed a business card.

He handed it to me.

I glanced down.

The name printed across the top was one I recognized.

Harrington Global Holdings.

My fingers tightened around the card.

I'd seen that name before.

On Tyler's laptop.

On emails he'd once told me were related to a consulting project.

On a document he'd asked me to print several months ago.

I looked up.

“Why does my husband's name appear in your company's documents?””

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked directly at Tyler.

“That's something I believe he should explain.””

Tyler stepped toward me.

“Vanessa, give me the card.””

I pulled it closer to my chest.

“No.””

“Give it to me.””

“No, Tyler.””

His jaw tightened.

Michael moved between us.

“Don't.””

Tyler glared at him.

“This has nothing to do with you.””

Michael's expression remained calm.

“That's what you keep telling yourself.””

Then he turned toward me.

“Take the children home. Don't sign anything your husband gives you. And don't let anyone convince you that you imagined what happened today.””

My throat tightened.

“Why are you helping me?””

For the first time, Michael's expression softened.

“Because I know what it's like to discover that the person you trusted has been living a completely different life behind your back.””

He stepped into the SUV.

The driver closed the door.

But before the vehicle pulled away, Michael lowered the window.

“One more thing, Vanessa.””

I approached cautiously.

“Your husband isn't the only person who has been keeping secrets.””

Then the window rolled up.

The black SUV disappeared into traffic.

I stood frozen.

Tyler was still beside me.

Sloane was staring after Michael.

And suddenly, the afternoon felt much colder.

“Vanessa,” Tyler said.

I didn't look at him.

“Come home.””

I adjusted Piper's blanket.

“I'm going to my mother's.””

“Don't be dramatic.””

I finally turned.

“You kissed another woman in front of your daughters. I think we've passed dramatic.””

He grabbed my wrist.

Not hard enough to hurt.

But hard enough to make me stop.

“Listen to me. You don't know what you've just gotten involved in.””

I pulled my hand away.

“Then maybe you should have thought about that before involving yourself.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Vanessa, I'm warning you.””

I looked at him.

“No. You're too late.””

Then I walked toward the waiting taxi.

Behind me, I heard Sloane whisper something.

I couldn't make out the words.

But I heard Tyler's response.

And it made me stop.

“She's not supposed to know about the account.””

I turned my head.

Sloane was staring at him.

“Then why did you bring her here?””

Tyler's voice dropped.

“I didn't know Michael was coming back.””

I looked down at the business card in my hand.

May you like

Harrington Global Holdings.

And for the first time, I wondered whether the betrayal I'd witnessed at the waterfront was only the smallest part of something much bigger.
