Chapter 1: The Welcome Home That Destroyed Me

“Five months waiting for you... and THIS is what I get?””

My voice barely made it past my trembling lips.

The waterfront arrival terminal was crowded with travelers, rolling suitcases, excited families, and people holding flowers for loved ones returning home.

But I couldn't hear any of it.

All I could hear was the sound of my own heart breaking.

Because twenty feet away, my husband was kissing another woman.

And I was standing there holding our newborn twins.

Piper was asleep against my left shoulder, her tiny fingers curled around the collar of my sweater. Poppy rested in my right arm, making little noises as she dreamed.

They were barely three weeks old.

Three weeks since I'd delivered them after a difficult pregnancy that had kept me on bed rest for months.

Three weeks since I'd become a mother.

And apparently, three weeks was all the time my husband needed to decide that his family no longer mattered.

“Tyler?””

I said his name again.

This time, he heard me.

His lips separated from the woman's. He turned, looked directly at me, and for one brief second, his expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not surprise.

Something closer to irritation.

The woman beside him slowly adjusted the collar of her expensive cream-colored coat. Her long blonde hair fell perfectly over one shoulder. A diamond bracelet glittered around her wrist.

She looked like someone who had never had to wake up at three in the morning to prepare a bottle.

Someone who had never spent an entire night listening to a newborn cry.

Someone who had never watched her body recover from childbirth while wondering when her husband would finally come home.

Her name was Sloane.

I'd heard it before.

Several times, actually.

But I'd never imagined I'd meet her like this.

“Vanessa,” Tyler said flatly.

I stared at him.

“Are you going to explain what I'm looking at?””

Sloane glanced at me, then at the babies.

“Oh,” she said, almost laughing.

“These must be the twins.””

Must be.

As though Piper and Poppy were two packages Tyler had forgotten to collect.

I tightened my arms around them.

“Don't talk about my children like that.””

Tyler exhaled impatiently.

“Can we not do this here?””

I almost laughed.

Here?

He was kissing another woman in the middle of a public arrival terminal, and somehow I was the one making things uncomfortable.

“You told me you were coming home today,” I said.

“You told me you couldn't wait to see the girls.””

“I did come home.””

“You came home with her?””

Sloane placed a manicured hand on Tyler's arm.

“Tyler, sweetheart, perhaps we should go.””

Sweetheart.

The word landed like a slap.

Tyler didn't move away from her.

Instead, he looked at me as though I were an inconvenience he'd been hoping to avoid.

“Listen, Vanessa. I don't owe you a public explanation.””

My throat tightened.

“I've spent five months waiting for you.””

“And?””

The single word was so cold that I almost forgot how to breathe.

“And I gave birth to your daughters.””

“I know. You've reminded me enough times.””

Poppy stirred against my chest.

I instinctively rocked her, whispering that everything was okay.

It wasn't.

Nothing was okay.

“You missed their first ultrasound after the second trimester,” I said quietly.

“You weren't there when Piper stopped moving and I spent six hours in the hospital. You weren't there when the doctors told me they might have to deliver early.””

Tyler checked his watch.

“Are we finished?””

I stared at him.

“Are you serious?””

Sloane sighed dramatically.

“Vanessa, I think you're misunderstanding the situation.””

I turned toward her.

“Then explain it.””

She tilted her head.

“Tyler and I are together.””

The words seemed to drain the warmth from my body.

“Since when?””

Neither answered.

I looked at my husband.

“Since when, Tyler?””

He finally spoke.

“Since before the girls were born.””

I felt Piper's tiny cheek against my shoulder.

Before the girls were born.

While I'd been taking prenatal vitamins.

While I'd been arranging the nursery.

While I'd been sending him pictures of tiny pink dresses and asking which one he liked.

He'd been building another relationship.

I swallowed hard.

“You brought your mistress here while I raised your children?””

Tyler's expression hardened.

“Watch your mouth.””

“My mouth?””

“Yes. You're embarrassing yourself.””

I looked at the man I'd married four years earlier.

The man who had once driven two hours through a snowstorm because I'd mentioned craving a particular dessert.

The man who had promised to hold my hand through every difficult moment.

I couldn't find that man anymore.

“I thought you loved me,” I whispered.

Tyler gave a humorless laugh.

“Vanessa, I never promised you I'd be faithful!””

The sentence echoed between us.

For a moment, I genuinely thought I'd misunderstood him.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“You stood in front of our families and promised to love me.””

“Marriage isn't a prison.””

I blinked rapidly.

Tears gathered along my lower lashes.

Sloane leaned closer to him.

“Come on, Tyler. We have somewhere to be.””

I looked at her.

“Did you know about the babies?””

Her expression barely changed.

“Of course.””

“And you still came here?””

She glanced down at Piper and Poppy.

“That's between Tyler and you.””

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I felt something inside me go very still.

Because suddenly I understood something.

These people weren't confused.

They weren't making mistakes.

They had made decisions.

Repeatedly.

And every one of those decisions had required them to ignore the fact that two innocent babies were involved.

Tyler reached for the handle of his suitcase.

“I'm leaving.””

I stepped slightly forward.

“Tyler, wait.””

He stopped but didn't turn around.

“The girls have been asking for you.””

Piper made a tiny sound.

I looked down at her.

Of course, she hadn't asked for anything yet. She was too young to understand the world.

But I'd imagined this moment so many times.

Their father arriving home.

Picking them up.

Kissing their foreheads.

Telling them he was going to be there.

I'd imagined taking a photograph of all four of us and sending it to our families.

Instead, I was standing in a public terminal watching him walk away with another woman.

“Tyler,” I said again.

He turned.

“What now?””

“Would you at least hold them?””

For the first time, he looked directly at the twins.

Not with affection.

With annoyance.

“Not now.””

“Not now?””

“I have plans.””

Sloane smiled faintly.

“Let's go, darling.””

Then she kissed his cheek.

Right in front of me.

I lowered my eyes, trying to keep my tears from falling onto Poppy's blanket.

That was when I heard the engine.

A deep, powerful sound rolled through the waterfront arrival lane.

A black SUV pulled up behind Sloane.

Its windows were tinted. Its bodywork gleamed beneath the afternoon sunlight.

A uniformed driver stepped out and hurried around to the passenger side.

Sloane's smile disappeared.

I watched her face change.

Her shoulders stiffened.

Her fingers tightened around Tyler's arm.

The rear door opened.

A tall man stepped out.

Dark suit.

White shirt.

No tie.

His expression was unreadable.

I recognized him immediately.

Michael.

Sloane's husband.

The man she'd told everyone was away on an extended business trip overseas.

The man whose company had apparently been struggling with a major international acquisition.

The man whose name I'd seen in photographs beside Sloane at charity galas.

Michael looked at Tyler.

Then at Sloane.

He didn't smile.

He didn't wave.

He simply stood beside the open SUV door and stared at them.

Sloane took a step backward.

“Michael?””

Her voice cracked.

Then, suddenly, she screamed.

“MICHAEL?! YOU CAN'T POSSIBLY BE HERE!””

The entire arrival area seemed to fall silent.

Tyler slowly turned toward the SUV.

His hand dropped from Sloane's arm.

Michael said nothing.

Not a single word.

He merely looked at the two people standing together.

And then his eyes moved toward me.

Toward the twins.

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for me to notice.

He seemed to recognize something.

Something about the babies.

Before I could understand why, Michael reached inside his jacket and removed a slim black folder.

He held it at his side.

Sloane shook her head.

“No. No, Michael. This isn't what it looks like.””

Michael remained silent.

Tyler looked between them.

“Who the hell are you supposed to be?””

Michael finally spoke.

His voice was quiet.

“I think you should be very careful about the next thing you say.””

And for the first time that afternoon, Tyler looked genuinely afraid.

I didn't know what Michael had planned.

But I had a feeling the man who had just arrived wasn't there to take his wife home.

He was there to settle something.

And whatever it was, Sloane clearly knew about it.

Because she had stopped looking at Tyler.

May you like

She was staring at the black folder.

As though it contained something capable of destroying her entire life.
