Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Took to His Grave

Marcus rushed toward his father.

"Dad!""

Thomas raised one hand.

"Easy, son.""

Marcus stared at him, unable to believe what he was seeing.

"Where have you been?""

Thomas looked down.

"Trying to make things right.""

"For fifteen years?""

"I know.""

Marcus's voice cracked.

"You let me believe you were dead.""

Thomas closed his eyes.

"That was the only way I could keep you safe.""

Richard laughed.

"Don't listen to him. Thomas has always been good at playing the victim.""

Thomas turned.

"Richard, you haven't changed.""

"And neither have you.""

Thomas placed his briefcase on the platform.

"I've changed enough to bring the original agreement.""

Amber stepped forward.

"Mr. Reed, does that document prove my father owned the Sterling system?""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why did he never use it?""

Thomas looked at her.

"Because he was protecting someone.""

Amber felt her stomach tighten.

"Who?""

Thomas looked toward Peter.

"Your uncle.""

Peter shook his head.

"Don't.""

Thomas opened the briefcase.

Inside was a thick document sealed in a transparent protective cover.

"Twenty years ago, Peter approached Richard with Daniel's original engineering drawings. He wanted money. Richard wanted the technology.""

Peter stepped forward.

"That's not how it happened.""

Thomas ignored him.

"Daniel discovered the arrangement and confronted his brother. He could have taken Peter to court, but he refused.""

Amber stared.

"Why?""

Thomas's expression softened.

"Because Peter was his family.""

Peter looked down.

Thomas continued.

"Daniel gave Peter one opportunity to return the stolen designs and admit what he had done. Instead, Peter went to Richard and helped forge the transfer agreement.""

Richard folded his arms.

"Thomas, you're making claims you cannot prove.""

Thomas removed another document.

"This is the original contract.""

He placed it on the platform.

"Your signature is on it, Richard.""

Richard looked at the page.

For the first time, he seemed unable to find words.

Thomas continued.

"And this is the original payment record showing the money transferred to Peter.""

Amber looked at her uncle.

"How could you?""

Peter's eyes filled with tears.

"I was tired of being second.""

Amber shook her head.

"Second to what?""

"Your father!""

Peter's voice echoed through the storage room.

"Everything was always about Daniel. He was the genius. He was the successful one. I worked beside him for years, and everyone treated me like I was nothing.""

Amber looked at him.

"Then why didn't you build something of your own?""

Peter had no answer.

She continued.

"You could have asked Dad for help. You could have started your own company. But you chose to steal from him.""

Peter looked at the floor.

"I thought Richard would make us both rich.""

Thomas shook his head.

"He never intended to share anything with you.""

Richard laughed.

"Don't pretend you know my intentions.""

Thomas looked directly at him.

"I know exactly what you intended. You used Peter to obtain Daniel's drawings, then used the forged agreement to claim the technology.""

Richard stepped closer.

"Enough.""

Thomas raised the second document.

"And I have the evidence that proves it.""

The room fell silent.

An hour later, the auction was officially suspended.

The legal representatives arrived after receiving Marcus's recording and copies of the original documents.

Richard attempted to leave through the rear entrance, but the security team stopped him when the attorneys requested that the relevant records be preserved.

Peter sat alone beside the engine.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His hands trembled.

Amber approached him.

"Uncle Peter.""

He looked up.

For a moment, she saw the man who had once taught her how to ride a bicycle.

The man who had taken her to school.

The man who had sat beside her at Daniel's funeral.

Then she remembered the security footage.

The missing USB drive.

The warning to burn the documents.

"Why did you help Richard?"" she asked.

Peter wiped his face.

"I thought I could fix things.""

"How?""

"I believed that if Richard gave me enough money, I could repay your father's debts. I could help you.""

Amber stared at him.

"You could have helped me by telling the truth.""

Peter looked away.

"I know.""

"Did you know Dad was being threatened?""

Peter hesitated.

"Yes.""

Amber's chest tightened.

"Did you know he was afraid?""

Peter nodded.

"Yes.""

"And you still did nothing?""

Peter began crying.

"I was afraid too.""

Amber shook her head.

"That's what everyone keeps saying. Everyone was afraid. Everyone wanted to protect themselves.""

She stepped closer.

"But my father was the one who paid the price.""

Peter looked up.

"Can you forgive me?""

Amber was silent.

Then she answered.

"I don't know.""

Peter lowered his head.

"That's fair.""

Amber walked away.

In the afternoon, Thomas asked Amber to meet him in a quiet conference room.

Marcus joined them.

Thomas placed a small envelope on the table.

"Your father gave me this shortly before he died.""

Amber opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Amber,

If you are reading this, I hope you have grown into someone who understands that money and success are not the same thing.

I know what happened with Peter. I know what Richard did. I also know that the people responsible may never admit their mistakes.

But I don't want you spending your life fighting ghosts.

Finish what I started.

Not because you owe me anything.

Because you deserve to see what honest work can become.

I love you, sweetheart.

Dad.

Amber pressed the letter against her chest.

For the first time in years, she allowed herself to cry.

Thomas waited quietly.

When she finally looked up, he spoke.

"Your father wanted you to have the Sterling company. But he also wanted you to have something more important.""

"What?""

"A choice.""

Thomas explained that the original trust included a provision allowing Amber to decide what happened to the technology.

She could sell the patents.

License them.

Or continue developing the project.

No one could force her to follow Richard's business model.

Amber looked at Marcus.

"What would you do?""

Marcus smiled faintly.

"I think your father would have wanted you to build something that helps people.""

Amber nodded.

"Then that's what I'll do.""

The following morning, Amber attended the emergency legal hearing.

Richard arrived with two attorneys.

He looked confident again.

His suit was immaculate.

His expression was controlled.

When Amber entered, he barely acknowledged her.

His lawyer stood first.

"Your Honor, my client disputes the authenticity of the documents submitted by Miss Carter.""

Amber's attorney presented the original patent records.

Then came the financial transfers.

The original partnership agreement.

The video recording.

And finally, Thomas Reed's sworn testimony.

Richard's lawyer objected repeatedly.

But each objection was answered by another document.

At one point, Richard leaned toward his attorney and whispered something.

The attorney shook his head.

Amber watched them.

She wasn't smiling.

She wasn't celebrating.

She simply wanted the truth to be heard.

When Thomas took the stand, he explained the original agreement in detail.

He identified the signatures.

He described the forged transfer.

And he confirmed that Daniel Carter had retained legal ownership of the Sterling invention.

Then Marcus presented the recording of Richard and Peter discussing the hidden module.

The courtroom fell silent.

Richard's expression changed.

His attorney stopped taking notes.

When the recording ended, the judge requested a short recess.

Amber walked into the corridor.

Victoria was waiting there.

She approached carefully.

"Amber?""

Amber turned.

Victoria looked exhausted.

"I wanted to apologize.""

Amber didn't answer.

Victoria continued.

"I know an apology doesn't undo what I did. I know I humiliated you. I laughed when you were standing there trying not to cry.""

Amber remembered the pink motorcycle.

The laughter.

The envelope.

The way Victoria had looked at her.

Victoria lowered her eyes.

"I was cruel because I thought money made me better than everyone else.""

Amber looked at her.

"And now?""

"Now I know how empty that was.""

Victoria took a breath.

"I want to help you restore the original motorcycle.""

Amber studied her.

"Why?""

"Because it deserves to carry your father's name.""

Amber looked away.

"I appreciate that. But trust takes time.""

Victoria nodded.

"I understand.""

Then she said something unexpected.

"My father has been hiding another set of documents.""

Amber turned back.

"What documents?""

"Records from the original company. I found them in his office last night.""

"Why didn't you bring them to the hearing?""

Victoria reached into her bag.

"I did.""

She handed Amber a sealed envelope.

Amber opened it.

Inside was a list of company shareholders from twenty years earlier.

Daniel Carter.

Thomas Reed.

Peter Carter.

And one additional name.

*ELAINE CARTER.*

Amber stared.

Her mother hadn't simply helped protect the invention.

She had been a legal shareholder in the original company.

And according to the document, she owned forty percent of the project.

Amber looked at Victoria.

"Why would my mother own forty percent?""

Victoria shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Amber turned toward the courtroom.

Thomas was speaking with Marcus.

She approached them and showed the document.

Thomas looked at it.

His expression changed.

"Where did you find this?""

"Victoria found it in Richard's office.""

Thomas read the shareholder list again.

Then he lowered himself into a chair.

"Your father never told you?""

"Told me what?""

Thomas looked at Amber.

"Elaine was the person who financed the original prototype. She sold her inheritance to fund the development.""

Amber felt tears rise again.

"She never told me.""

"She didn't want you growing up under the weight of it.""

Thomas turned the page.

There was another provision.

It stated that Daniel and Elaine's shares would pass to their daughter.

Amber read the final paragraph.

Then she looked up.

"Does this mean I own the entire company?""

Thomas nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

Marcus smiled.

"Amber, you're not just the heir to your father's invention.""

He pointed to the document.

"You're the majority shareholder of the original Sterling company.""

Amber couldn't speak.

For years, she had struggled to pay rent on a small workshop.

She had worked double shifts.

She had repaired motorcycles with borrowed tools.

And all along, her parents had built something far greater than she had ever imagined.

The hearing resumed.

The judge issued an interim order preventing Richard and his company from selling or transferring any Sterling assets until the ownership dispute was fully resolved.

The original prototype was placed under independent protection.

The court also ordered preservation of the company's financial and engineering records.

Richard stood as the hearing ended.

His face was red.

He looked directly at Amber.

"You think you've won?""

Amber met his eyes.

"I think the truth has finally been heard.""

Richard leaned closer.

"This isn't over.""

Amber answered quietly.

"It should have been over twenty years ago.""

That evening, Amber returned to her father's workshop.

She placed the original documents on his old desk.

The workshop was quiet.

Outside, the sun was setting.

She touched the faded photograph of Daniel.

"We did it, Dad.""

Her phone rang.

It was Thomas.

"Amber, there's something else you should know.""

She frowned.

"What?""

"While reviewing the original company records, I found a second trust agreement.""

Amber sat down.

"What does it say?""

Thomas hesitated.

"It was created by your mother. She left specific instructions regarding the Sterling company.""

"Why didn't you mention that earlier?""

"Because I only found it an hour ago.""

Amber's heart began racing.

"What instructions?""

Thomas lowered his voice.

"Elaine didn't want the company to be owned by one person forever.""

Amber frowned.

"Then who was supposed to own it?""

Thomas answered:

"She named a second beneficiary.""

Amber froze.

"Who?""

Thomas took a breath.

"Your mother's first child.""

Amber stared at the wall.

"My mother's first child?""

"Yes.""

"But I'm an only child.""

Thomas was silent.

Then he said:

"Amber, according to the original birth records, you had an older sibling.""

The phone slipped slightly in her hand.

"What?""

"Your mother gave birth before you were born. The child was placed under a different legal name.""

Amber struggled to breathe.

"Who is this person?""

Thomas opened the file.

Then he read the name.

"Victoria Isabella Vale.""

Amber stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.

Victoria.

The woman who had humiliated her.

The woman whose father had stolen Daniel's invention.

The woman who had spent years believing she was the rightful heir to the Sterling empire.

Amber looked at the photograph of her father.

Then she whispered:

"That's impossible.""

But Thomas's next words made everything even more complicated.

"Your mother never told Victoria the truth. And Richard may have known about her identity all along.""

Amber ended the call.

Her phone immediately rang again.

Victoria.

Amber answered.

"Victoria?""

Victoria sounded frightened.

"Amber, I need you to come to the villa.""

"Why?""

"My father has disappeared.""

Amber's stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?""

"His office is empty. His car is gone. And there's a note on my bed.""

"What does it say?""

Victoria began crying.

"It says that if I want to know who my real father is, I should ask Amber Carter.""

Amber closed her eyes.

May you like

The woman who had spent years humiliating her might actually be her sister.

And Richard Vale had just vanished with the final piece of their family's history.
