Chapter 8: The Auction That Was Never Supposed to Happen
Victoria arrived at the old Sterling facility thirty minutes later.
She wore a black jacket, dark jeans, and a baseball cap pulled low over her forehead.
For the first time since Amber had met her, she looked genuinely afraid.
Marcus stood near the entrance.
"You're Victoria Vale?""
"Yes.""
He studied her.
"Your father is going to know you're here.""
Victoria shook her head.
"He thinks I'm at home.""
Amber approached her.
"You said you found the buyer's contract.""
Victoria handed her a folded document.
Amber opened it.
The contract confirmed that Peter Carter had agreed to purchase the original Sterling engine at a private auction.
The sale price was listed as twelve million dollars.
Amber stared.
"Twelve million?""
Victoria nodded.
"That's only the opening payment. There's another agreement promising him a share of the company once the transfer is complete.""
Marcus examined the document.
"This is worse than I thought.""
Amber looked at Victoria.
"Why would Peter want the original engine if he already has access to the designs?""
Victoria hesitated.
"Because the engine contains the original verification module. Without it, nobody can prove the complete history of the invention.""
Marcus nodded.
"That's exactly what my father wrote.""
Amber looked toward the old workshop.
"Then we need to get that module before the auction.""
Victoria shook her head.
"You don't understand. My father has security everywhere.""
Marcus gave a short laugh.
"I used to maintain the building's equipment. I know the layout.""
Amber looked at him.
"Can you get us inside?""
"Yes. But there's a problem.""
"What?""
"The auction begins at ten. The engine will be transported to the main showroom at nine.""
Amber checked her phone.
It was already 7:40 a.m.
"We have less than ninety minutes.""
Victoria took a breath.
"I can get us through the private entrance.""
Amber looked at her.
"Why would you risk that?""
Victoria lowered her eyes.
"Because I spent my entire life believing my father was a good man. Yesterday, I watched him threaten you. Then I discovered the truth about Daniel.""
She looked up.
"I can't keep pretending I don't know.""
Marcus nodded.
"Then let's move.""
At 8:35 a.m., the three arrived at the Vale industrial showroom.
The building was enormous.
Glass walls stretched across the front, and several luxury motorcycles were displayed beneath bright overhead lights.
A banner hung above the entrance.
*VALE PERFORMANCE — THE FUTURE OF MOTORCYCLE ENGINEERING.*
Amber stared at the words.
Her father's work was being sold as a family achievement.
Victoria used her access card at a side entrance.
The door unlocked.
"Stay close," she whispered.
They moved through a corridor lined with framed photographs.
Richard appeared in almost every one.
Standing beside racing motorcycles.
Cutting ribbons.
Shaking hands with investors.
Accepting awards.
And in several photographs, the pink superbike appeared behind him.
Amber stopped beside one.
It showed Richard receiving an engineering award for the Sterling project.
The date was twenty years earlier.
She looked closer.
A small plaque beneath the photograph read:
Richard Vale — Creator of the Sterling Performance System.
Amber felt her jaw tighten.
Marcus touched her shoulder.
"Not now.""
They continued.
At the end of the corridor was a large storage room.
Inside stood a motorcycle engine mounted on a metal platform.
It was old.
Dusty.
But unmistakably original.
Amber walked toward it slowly.
Her hands began trembling.
The engine had been built by her father.
Every bracket, every cable, every custom component carried the familiar precision she had studied for years.
She touched the casing.
"Hello, Dad," she whispered.
Victoria watched her quietly.
Marcus examined the lower assembly.
"This is it.""
Amber nodded.
"The original Sterling engine.""
She looked at the side panel.
There was the triangular symbol.
Three small dots.
She remembered the warning sequence.
She remembered her mother's recording.
And she remembered the final verification code.
But before she could inspect the panel, footsteps sounded outside.
Marcus moved toward the door.
"Someone's coming.""
Victoria looked around.
"There's a maintenance closet behind those shelves.""
They slipped inside.
Through a narrow opening, Amber could see two men entering the storage room.
One was Richard.
The other was Peter.
Amber's uncle.
Peter wore an expensive charcoal suit and carried a leather briefcase.
Richard approached the engine.
"Everything is ready?""
Peter nodded.
"The buyer's representatives are arriving in twenty minutes.""
"And the transfer documents?""
"Prepared.""
Richard examined the engine.
"Did you find the module?""
Peter shook his head.
"Not yet.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"You promised me you knew where Daniel hid it.""
"I know where he put it. I just haven't found the exact compartment.""
Richard lowered his voice.
"Then find it before the auction.""
Peter looked toward the engine.
"Once I have the module, the original patent claim becomes worthless.""
Richard nodded.
"And you get your money.""
Peter smiled.
"After twenty years, I think I've earned it.""
Amber felt her stomach turn.
She looked at Marcus.
He was recording the conversation on his phone.
Victoria's eyes were filled with tears.
Richard continued.
"There's another problem.""
"What?""
"Amber.""
Peter's smile disappeared.
"She's getting too close.""
Richard nodded.
"Then we need to deal with her.""
Peter sighed.
"I told you I would handle it.""
"Your last attempt resulted in her finding the original documents.""
Peter looked irritated.
"She has no idea what she's doing.""
"Don't underestimate her. Daniel was clever, and she inherited his mind.""
Peter laughed.
"Daniel was always too sentimental.""
Amber closed her eyes.
Hearing her uncle speak about her father that way hurt more than she expected.
Richard walked toward the engine.
"Search the lower casing. The module has to be inside.""
Peter opened his briefcase and removed a set of tools.
Amber looked at the small compartment.
They were about to destroy the very thing they needed.
She couldn't wait any longer.
She stepped out.
"Don't touch it.""
Richard spun around.
Peter dropped the screwdriver.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Peter slowly smiled.
"Amber.""
She looked at him.
"Uncle Peter.""
Richard moved toward the door.
"Security!""
Marcus stepped out behind Amber.
"Don't bother. I already sent a copy of your conversation to my attorney.""
Richard froze.
Peter looked at Marcus.
"Who are you?""
"Marcus Reed.""
Peter's face changed.
"Thomas's son?""
"Yes.""
Peter shook his head.
"You should have stayed out of this.""
Marcus held up his phone.
"That's what my father said before you threatened him.""
Peter's jaw tightened.
Amber moved toward the engine.
"Give me the tools.""
Richard blocked her.
"You have no authority to inspect that machine.""
Amber held up the trust agreement.
"Actually, I do.""
Peter laughed.
"That document is worthless.""
Amber stared at him.
"Why?""
"Because Daniel never completed the final registration.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"That's a lie.""
Peter turned.
"Your father knows nothing.""
Marcus's voice hardened.
"He knows exactly what you did.""
Peter looked at Amber.
"Listen to me. Your father was a dreamer. He had no idea how to run a company.""
Amber shook her head.
"Then why did you steal his work?""
Peter's smile disappeared.
"Because I deserved a share.""
"You were his brother.""
"I was his business partner!""
"You tried to take everything from him.""
Peter slammed his briefcase onto the platform.
"He was always the favorite! Everyone praised Daniel. Daniel the genius.
Daniel the inventor. Daniel the perfect son!""
Amber stared at him.
"So this was jealousy?""
Peter laughed bitterly.
"It was about fairness.""
"Fairness?""
Amber pointed toward the engine.
"You watched him work for years. You knew how much this meant to him. And you still helped Richard destroy his company.""
Peter's face twisted.
"Your father should have given me what I deserved.""
Amber stepped closer.
"He would have helped you if you had asked.""
Peter looked away.
For the first time, he had no answer.
Then Richard spoke.
"Enough. We're wasting time.""
He reached for the engine panel.
Amber moved quickly.
She pushed his hand away.
"Don't!""
Richard grabbed her wrist.
Victoria rushed forward.
"Dad, let her go!""
Richard released Amber.
"Stay out of this, Victoria!""
"No!""
Victoria stepped between them.
"You told me this company was built on honesty. You told me Daniel was a fraud. You made me believe Amber was trying to steal from us.""
Richard stared at his daughter.
"I did what I had to do.""
"You stole from a dead man!""
Richard raised his voice.
"Everything I built was for you!""
Victoria shook her head.
"I never asked you to build it with someone else's life.""
A sudden alarm sounded.
The showroom doors were opening.
The first auction guests had arrived.
Richard glanced at his watch.
"We're finished here.""
He turned toward Peter.
"Get the module.""
Peter grabbed the tools.
Amber looked at the engine.
She had only seconds.
She noticed the three dots beneath the lower casing.
A tiny metal plate sat between them.
She remembered her mother's music box.
The silver key.
0719.
The sequence.
Amber pulled the silver key from her pocket.
She inserted it into the narrow slot.
A small click sounded.
The panel opened.
Inside was a sealed metal capsule.
Amber carefully removed it.
Peter lunged.
"Give me that!""
Marcus blocked him.
Victoria grabbed her father's arm.
Richard shouted.
"Stop them!""
But Amber had already opened the capsule.
Inside was a tiny data module and a folded document.
She unfolded the paper.
Her father's handwriting.
The person who holds this record does not own the invention.
The person who created it does.
Beneath the statement was a list of names.
Daniel Carter.
Elaine Carter.
And Peter Carter.
Amber stared at the third name.
Peter had been listed as a contributor.
But beside his name was another note:
*REMOVED FOR UNAUTHORIZED DISCLOSURE OF CONFIDENTIAL DESIGNS.*
Amber looked up.
"You were part of the original team.""
Peter's face turned red.
"Give me that!""
Marcus held him back.
Richard looked toward the open door.
"Peter, forget the paper. Take the module!""
Peter struggled.
Amber stepped away.
Then she noticed another line at the bottom of the document.
A final name.
The name of the person who had financed the original project.
She read it aloud.
"Thomas Reed.""
Marcus froze.
"What?""
Amber looked at him.
"Your father financed the final prototype.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That's impossible. My father never had that kind of money.""
Amber turned the paper over.
A handwritten note appeared on the back.
Thomas Reed provided the final funding under a private agreement. In exchange, he receives no ownership, only the right to protect the invention if Daniel cannot.
Marcus stared at the page.
"My father...""
He couldn't finish.
Then Richard laughed.
"Now you understand.""
Amber looked at him.
"Understand what?""
Richard stepped toward the open door.
"Thomas Reed wasn't an innocent attorney. He was the person who arranged the original financing. He knew everything.""
Marcus shook his head.
"You're lying.""
Richard smiled.
"Ask your father.""
A voice came from behind them.
"There's no need.""
Everyone turned.
An older man stood in the doorway.
He had silver hair, a walking stick, and a tired expression.
Marcus dropped his phone.
"Dad?""
Thomas Reed slowly entered the room.
He looked at the engine.
Then at Amber.
And finally at Peter.
"I think it's time I told you all what really happened.""
Peter went pale.
May you like
Because the man he had spent fifteen years believing was gone had just walked back into the room.
And he was carrying a second copy of the original Sterling agreement.
