Chapter 5: The Witness Who Never Stopped Hiding
The following morning, the wedding venue was empty.
White roses lay scattered across the ballroom floor. Half-empty champagne glasses remained on tables, and the enormous wedding cake stood untouched beneath the chandeliers.
The celebration that had cost millions of dollars had ended without a single photograph of the bride and groom.
At the Grand Meridian's private medical suite, Eleanor was preparing to leave for a more thorough examination at a nearby hospital.
Daniel stood beside her, speaking on the phone.
“Yes. Find him. His name is Thomas Bennett. He used to work for my father.””
He listened.
“No, I don't care if it takes all day. I want to know where he is.””
He ended the call.
Alexander entered carrying two cups of coffee.
“Mother, the doctor says you can travel.””
Eleanor smiled.
“That's good news.””
He placed the cups down.
“Would you like some?””
“Tea would be better.””
Alexander laughed nervously.
“I should have remembered.””
Eleanor studied him.
“You don't have to know everything about me immediately.””
Alexander sat beside her.
“I don't know how to do this.””
“Do what?””
“Be your son.””
Eleanor's expression softened.
“You already are.””
He looked at her hands.
“I spent my entire life believing you abandoned me.””
“I know.””
“I hated you sometimes.””
A tear rolled down his cheek.
“I used to wonder what I had done wrong.””
Eleanor reached for him.
“Oh, Alexander.””
He took her hand.
“Did you ever stop looking for me?””
“Never.””
She squeezed his fingers.
“Not one day.””
Alexander bent forward and rested his forehead against her hand.
For the first time in thirty years, he allowed himself to cry for the mother he had thought was dead.
Later that morning, Lily arrived at the hospital.
She had changed out of her uniform and was wearing a simple blue sweater, black jeans, and white sneakers.
She carried a small paper bag.
“Good morning.””
Eleanor looked up immediately.
“Lily!””
The old woman held out her hand.
Lily approached and hugged her carefully.
“How are you feeling?””
“Much better now that you've come.””
Lily smiled.
“I brought you something.””
She opened the bag.
Inside was a small bouquet of yellow daisies.
“I didn't know what flowers you liked, so I chose these.””
Eleanor looked delighted.
“They're beautiful.””
Alexander stood nearby.
“I'm Alexander.””
“I know,” Lily replied.
“Your mother has told me a little about you.””
Alexander smiled.
“Hopefully nothing embarrassing.””
“Only that you were afraid of thunderstorms when you were little.””
He looked at Eleanor.
“Mother!””
Eleanor laughed.
“You used to hide under the kitchen table.””
“I was four!””
“And you insisted that I sing until the rain stopped.””
Alexander shook his head, smiling despite himself.
For a brief moment, the hospital room felt like an ordinary family home.
Then Daniel entered.
“We found him.””
Eleanor immediately straightened.
“Thomas?””
Daniel nodded.
“He's living outside the city. He agreed to meet us.””
Alexander stood.
“Then let's go.””
Thomas Bennett lived in a small brick house near the outskirts of town.
He was seventy-eight, with thin white hair and a noticeable limp.
When Daniel knocked, the door opened only a few inches.
A pair of cautious eyes appeared.
“Mr. Reed?””
Daniel nodded.
“Thomas. We need to talk.””
The old man looked past him.
Then he saw Eleanor.
His face went pale.
“Mrs. Whitmore?””
Eleanor smiled sadly.
“Hello, Thomas.””
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he opened the door fully.
“Please. Come inside.””
The house smelled of old books and freshly brewed coffee.
Family photographs covered one wall. A small television played quietly in the corner.
Thomas offered them seats.
“I never thought I'd see you again.””
Eleanor folded her hands.
“Neither did I.””
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“Is Alexander here?””
Alexander stepped forward.
“I'm here.””
Thomas stared at him.
Then he lowered his head.
“I'm sorry, young man.””
Alexander frowned.
“For what?””
Thomas sat down slowly.
“Because I was there the night your father died.””
The room became silent.
Alexander moved closer.
“Tell me what happened.””
Thomas rubbed his palms together.
“I was driving your father home. It was raining heavily. He had been on the phone with someone for almost twenty minutes.””
“Who?””
“Richard Sterling.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Thomas continued.
“Your father was angry. He told Richard he had discovered a second set of accounts. He said the money wasn't just being stolen. It was being used to finance something much bigger.””
“What?”” Alexander asked.
“I don't know. Your father never told me.””
Thomas took a breath.
“When we reached the bridge, another car appeared behind us. It followed us for several miles.””
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Thomas continued.
“Your father told me to drive faster. Then the other vehicle struck us from behind.””
Alexander stared.
“An accident?””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
He looked directly at Alexander.
“Someone deliberately ran us off the road.””
Daniel stood.
“Why didn't you tell the police?””
Thomas's eyes filled with tears.
“Because Richard had my daughter.””
Everyone went still.
“What?”” Daniel asked.
Thomas nodded.
“She was twenty-three. She worked for a company owned by Sterling. Richard threatened to have her arrested for stealing money if I told anyone what happened.””
Alexander clenched his fists.
“So you stayed silent?””
“I was afraid.””
Thomas's voice cracked.
“I watched your father die. I crawled out of that car, and I heard him calling your mother's name. I wanted to help him, but the other vehicle came back.””
Eleanor began crying.
Thomas continued.
“One of the men stepped out. He told me to leave. He said if I ever spoke about what happened, my daughter would disappear.””
Alexander looked sick.
“And my mother?””
Thomas turned toward Eleanor.
“Richard had arranged for men to take you away that same night. He knew you were going to expose him.””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Thomas leaned forward.
“There's something else.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Thomas stood with difficulty and walked toward an old cabinet.
He opened the bottom drawer and removed a small metal box.
Inside were several photographs, an old flash drive, and a folded document.
“I kept these because I couldn't live with what I had done.””
He handed the flash drive to Daniel.
“Your father gave me this before we reached the bridge.””
Daniel examined it.
“What's on it?””
“I don't know. I've never been able to open it. But he told me that if anything happened to him, I should give it to his family.””
Alexander took the folded document.
It was a handwritten note.
His father's signature appeared at the bottom.
Alexander read it aloud.
Daniel, if you're reading this, Richard has discovered the second ledger. Do not trust the financial reports he gives you. The money is only part of the problem. The real danger concerns the company ownership documents and the people listed as beneficiaries.
Alexander stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked at Eleanor.
“There's one more thing your father told me.””
“What?””
“He said that Richard was planning to change the ownership of the entire company. He had someone inside the family helping him.””
Daniel looked at Alexander.
“Who?””
Thomas shook his head.
“Your father never gave me a name.””
Back at the hospital, Daniel arranged for a specialist to examine the flash drive.
Within hours, its contents were recovered.
There were scanned financial records, recorded conversations, and a series of documents signed by Richard Sterling.
But one file caught everyone's attention.
It was titled:
*REED FAMILY SUCCESSION AGREEMENT — CONFIDENTIAL.*
Daniel opened it.
The document showed that Richard had been attempting to transfer control of several Reed family assets into a private holding company.
The beneficiary was not Richard.
It was Vanessa.
Alexander stared at the screen.
“My fiancée?””
Daniel nodded.
“She was listed as the controlling beneficiary.””
Eleanor leaned closer.
“Keep looking.””
Daniel opened another file.
A recording began playing.
Richard's voice filled the room.
“Once Michael is gone, the boy will be raised without knowing anything. Daniel is too young to understand the financial structure. Eleanor will be handled separately.””
A second voice answered.
“What about the company shares?””
Richard laughed.
“By the time Alexander is old enough to ask questions, everything will already belong to us.””
Then came another voice.
A woman's voice.
Young.
Familiar.
Alexander leaned forward.
The recording continued.
“Father, what if Eleanor comes back?””
Richard answered.
“She won't.””
The woman laughed softly.
“Good. Because I don't want to spend my life looking over my shoulder.””
Alexander went completely still.
He recognized the voice.
It belonged to Vanessa.
Daniel paused the recording.
Nobody spoke.
Alexander stared at the screen.
“How old was she?””
Daniel checked the file date.
“Twenty-two.””
Alexander shook his head.
“She knew.””
Eleanor reached for his hand.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””
Alexander stood abruptly.
He walked toward the window, breathing heavily.
The woman he had planned to marry had known about his mother's disappearance.
She had known his father was murdered.
And she had entered his life carrying the same secrets that had destroyed his childhood.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
He opened another file.
A scanned document showed that Richard had not been the sole beneficiary of the fraudulent transfers.
A second signature appeared beneath his.
It belonged to someone who was still alive.
Someone whose name Alexander recognized immediately.
Daniel whispered:
“That's impossible.””
Alexander turned.
“What?””
Daniel pointed at the screen.
“Your father's former lawyer.””
The man who had signed Eleanor's false death certificate.
The man who had approved the original accident investigation.
And according to the document, he was still receiving payments.
The last payment had been made only three days earlier.
Alexander stared at the date.
“Three days ago?””
Daniel nodded.
“Which means someone is still protecting the people involved.””
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID displayed an unknown number.
Daniel answered.
A distorted male voice spoke.
“Stop digging into Richard Sterling's files.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Who is this?””
“You have no idea what you're dealing with.””
Daniel stood.
“Then tell me.””
The voice became colder.
“Ask your mother what happened to the original ownership agreement.””
Daniel looked toward Eleanor.
The caller continued.
“Because if she reveals where it's hidden, your entire family will lose everything.””
The call ended.
Eleanor's face had turned pale.
Alexander noticed.
“Mother?””
She looked at him.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“I know where it is.””
