Chapter 2: The Waitress Who Refused to Let Go

Eleanor's right hand slipped.

Her fingers scraped against the metal edge, leaving a thin red mark.

Below her, the city looked impossibly distant.

Cars moved like tiny beads of light. Traffic signals changed colors. People walked along the sidewalks, completely unaware that a woman was fighting for her life above them.

“HELP ME!”” Eleanor cried.

Lily lay flat on her stomach, one arm stretched over the railing.

“I've got you! Don't let go!””

Her fingers wrapped around Eleanor's wrist.

The impact nearly pulled Lily forward.

She gasped.

Her shoulder slammed against the terrace floor, and pain shot down her arm.

“Someone help!”” Lily screamed.

“CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES!””

Two guests rushed toward them.

A man in a black tuxedo grabbed Lily's waist.

Another guest dropped to his knees and reached for Eleanor's other arm.

“Hold on, ma'am!”” he shouted.

Eleanor was trembling.

“I can't... I can't hold on.””

“Yes, you can!”” Lily said.

“Look at me! Don't look down!””

Vanessa suddenly stepped between the guests.

“STOP!””

The man in the tuxedo looked up.

“Are you insane? She's falling!””

Vanessa pointed at Lily.

“Get away from her!””

Lily stared at the bride.

“Are you out of your mind? She's going to die!””

Vanessa's face turned crimson.

“You have no idea what you're interfering with.””

“I don't care!””

“You're an employee. You don't get to decide what happens at my wedding!””

Lily tightened her grip.

“Then fire me! But I'm not letting her die!””

The man holding Lily's waist shouted toward the other guests.

“Someone get security over here!””

A woman in a green evening gown rushed forward.

“Don't just stand there! Help them!””

Three more people grabbed Lily's legs and waist, forming a human chain.

The first man leaned over and caught Eleanor's free hand.

“On three!”” he shouted.

“One! Two! THREE!””

They pulled.

Eleanor's shoulder struck the outside of the railing.

She cried out.

“Careful!”” Lily screamed.

“Her arm!””

“Again!””

Everyone pulled together.

For one terrible second, Eleanor's body swung outward.

Lily felt the old woman's wrist slipping through her fingers.

“No!””

She wrapped both hands around Eleanor's forearm.

Her nails dug into the skin.

“Please, Eleanor! Don't give up!””

The elderly woman looked at her.

There were tears in her eyes.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””

“Don't apologize! Just hold on!””

With one final desperate effort, the guests dragged Eleanor over the railing.

She collapsed onto the terrace.

Her body landed against Lily's.

Both women gasped for air.

For several seconds, neither could move.

Then Lily rolled onto her side and wrapped her arms around Eleanor.

“Are you okay? Can you hear me?””

Eleanor coughed.

Then she nodded.

“Yes... I think so.””

Lily began crying.

“Oh, thank God.””

Eleanor lifted a trembling hand and touched Lily's cheek.

“You saved my life.””

Lily shook her head.

“We all did.””

But before the group could celebrate, Vanessa began shouting.

“What the hell have you done?””

Everyone turned.

The bride stood with both hands clenched around her bouquet.

Her expensive gown was slightly wrinkled, and one diamond earring had come loose.

“You ruined everything!”” she screamed.

A man in a tuxedo stared at her.

“Lady, you pushed that woman!””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“Watch your mouth!””

“I saw you! We all saw you!””

“You didn't see anything!””

Lily slowly stood.

Her knees were shaking.

“Vanessa, I watched you shove her.””

Vanessa marched toward her.

“You stupid little waitress.””

“Don't come near her,” one of the guests warned.

Vanessa ignored him.

“You have no idea how much this wedding cost. Do you understand what you've just done?””

Lily looked at the elderly woman lying on the floor.

“She's seventy-two years old. You nearly killed her.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“She was fine until you made a spectacle out of it.””

Eleanor tried to sit up.

“Vanessa...””

The bride turned.

“Don't speak to me!””

Eleanor flinched.

Lily immediately knelt beside her.

“Don't move yet. Help is coming.””

But Vanessa wasn't finished.

She pointed at Lily.

“You're fired.””

Lily looked up.

“What?””

“You heard me. You're fired. I'll make sure you never work in this city again.””

A hotel security supervisor finally arrived with two guards.

“What's happening here?””

Vanessa immediately changed her expression.

“Thank goodness. This waitress attacked me, and that woman fell over the railing during the confusion.””

Lily stared at her.

“That's a lie!””

Vanessa pointed at Lily's uniform.

“She's unstable. She became aggressive when I asked her to remove an unwanted guest.””

The security supervisor looked from Vanessa to Eleanor.

“Ma'am, is that true?””

Eleanor struggled to sit upright.

“No.””

Her voice was weak, but clear.

“She pushed me.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“She's confused. Look at her!””

Eleanor turned toward the supervisor.

“I know exactly what happened.””

The supervisor reached for his radio.

“Call the police. And get the medical team up here immediately.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Wait. You can't do that.””

“Ma'am, someone has fallen from the rooftop railing.””

“She didn't fall. She slipped!””

Lily stood.

“I have a witness. Several witnesses.””

Vanessa glared at her.

“Do you have any idea who you're talking to?””

Lily's voice trembled, but she didn't step back.

“Yes. I'm talking to the woman who tried to kill someone.””

A silence fell over the terrace.

For the first time that evening, Vanessa seemed to realize that the room wasn't on her side.

Ten minutes later, the hotel's medical team arrived.

Eleanor was placed on a stretcher. Her wrist was bruised, her shoulder was injured, and her breathing was still uneven.

Lily refused to leave her side.

A paramedic checked Eleanor's pulse.

“Ma'am, we're going to take you downstairs for a full examination.””

Eleanor nodded.

Then she looked toward Lily.

“Is she coming?””

The paramedic glanced at her.

“I'm afraid only medical personnel can accompany you.””

Eleanor gently caught his sleeve.

“Please. She saved my life.””

Lily smiled through her tears.

“It's okay. I'll meet you downstairs.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I don't want you disappearing.””

“I promise.””

The stretcher began moving.

But before it reached the terrace doors, Eleanor suddenly raised her voice.

“Wait!””

The paramedics stopped.

She looked directly at the security supervisor.

“Make sure that young woman isn't dismissed because of what happened.””

The supervisor nodded.

“We'll document everything.””

Eleanor turned to Lily.

“What is your full name, dear?””

“Lily Carter.””

Eleanor repeated it carefully.

“Lily Carter. I won't forget.””

Vanessa scoffed from behind them.

“Unbelievable. Now she's collecting rewards for doing her job.””

Eleanor turned her head.

Her eyes were suddenly cold.

“You should be grateful she did her job.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Excuse me?””

“If she hadn't, you'd be explaining a death to the police instead of worrying about your wedding.””

The bride's expression changed.

For a brief moment, she looked genuinely afraid.

Then she forced a smile.

“Take her away.””

The paramedics wheeled Eleanor through the doors.

Lily watched until she disappeared.

She was still shaking when the security supervisor approached.

“Miss Carter, I'll need your statement.””

“Of course.””

“Did you see the entire incident?””

“Yes.””

“Can you tell me exactly what happened?””

Lily looked toward Vanessa.

The bride was standing beside Alexander now.

She had already begun whispering into his ear.

Lily took a breath.

“She grabbed Eleanor's arm. They argued. Then she shoved her over the railing.””

The supervisor nodded.

“Thank you. We'll need you to repeat that to the police.””

Lily agreed.

But then she noticed something strange.

Vanessa wasn't arguing with the guests anymore.

She was desperately trying to reach Alexander's phone.

And Alexander, who had barely spoken all evening, was looking at her as if he had just discovered something deeply disturbing.

Downstairs, Eleanor was examined in a private medical suite.

The doctor confirmed that she had suffered a shoulder injury and severe bruising but had no life-threatening injuries.

When the paramedic left, Eleanor asked for her handbag.

A nurse retrieved it from the property collected at the scene.

The clasp was damaged, and several items had fallen out.

Her glasses.

A small leather wallet.

An old photograph.

And a cream-colored envelope sealed with red wax.

Eleanor carefully picked up the envelope.

Her fingers trembled as she turned it over.

On the front were four handwritten words:

*For Alexander. When the time comes.*

She closed her eyes.

“Thirty years,” she whispered.

A nurse looked at her.

“Would you like me to contact your family?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes. But not just anyone.””

She reached for her phone and searched through her contacts.

One name appeared.

Daniel Reed.

She pressed the call button.

The phone rang twice.

Then a man's voice answered.

“Eleanor?””

“Daniel, sweetheart.””

“What happened? You sound terrible.””

“I need you to come to the Grand Meridian.””

“Are you hurt?””

“Yes. But that's not why I'm calling.””

There was a pause.

“What is it?””

Eleanor looked at the sealed envelope.

“Alexander is getting married tonight.””

“I know.””

“Then you know Vanessa Sterling.””

Daniel's voice became colder.

“Unfortunately.””

Eleanor took a shaky breath.

“There's something you need to understand about that woman.””

“What did she do?””

Eleanor looked toward the door.

Then she whispered:

“She just tried to kill me.””

The line went silent.

And when Daniel finally spoke, his voice was no longer gentle.

“I'm coming. Don't let anyone leave that hotel.””

Upstairs, the reception had fallen into chaos.

The music had stopped.

Several guests were recording videos on their phones, and the hotel manager was speaking with police officers who had arrived through the service entrance.

Vanessa stood beside Alexander, trying to keep her composure.

“Darling, we need to leave.””

Alexander stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because this is becoming ridiculous.””

“An elderly woman almost died.””

“She slipped.””

“Three people say you pushed her.””

Vanessa's expression tightened.

“Those people don't know what happened.””

“I was there, Vanessa.””

“You weren't standing close enough.””

Alexander looked at her for a long moment.

Then he asked a question that made her face lose color.

“Why were you so afraid of what she was going to tell me?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, the ballroom doors swung open.

A tall man in a dark charcoal suit entered.

He was in his late fifties, with silver at his temples and the unmistakable posture of someone accustomed to being obeyed.

Two men followed him.

One carried a leather briefcase.

The other spoke quietly into a phone.

Guests moved aside without being asked.

The hotel manager immediately approached.

“Mr. Reed.””

Alexander turned.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa froze.

The man walked past the manager.

His eyes moved across the room until they found the bride.

Then he looked toward the empty space where Eleanor had been sitting.

His expression darkened.

“Where is she?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Who?””

Daniel stopped directly in front of her.

“Don't play games with me, Vanessa.””

May you like

And then he said something that made the bride take an involuntary step backward.

“Where is my mother?””
